That I agree with

The way Brandon says that very much seems like a joke more than actually what he will go with. Which is why I said is a possibility. Not necessarily likely. We won't know until we get to actually see what he's like three hundred years later

What was in the Terris Dominance? (Discuss)

Ah, I didn't have them overlaying on top of each other and the first map made it look different to me. That helps visualize it a lot thank you.- 28 replies

Also given that Alloy of Law shows Marsh seemingly being ok with whatever Kelsier is doing and the fact that Vin describes Marsh and Kelsier looking very similar. There might be the possibility that Marsh is Kelsier's "avatar"

So the Sovereigns temple is approximately (give or take a lot of miles) where the "12" on that map is, maybe a bit more East.- 28 replies

Bands of Mourning vs other types of investiture
StanLemon replied to zpo73's topic in Cosmere Discussion
@cometaryorbit Oh I'm aware of all those WoB. The thing is, while I think most of what it does is speed. There is clearly some kind of temporal mechanic connected to it. The fact that there are two instances in Shadows of Self that show something that could only be possible if it wasn't just speed proves that. And then there are WoB that say there is a small temporal aspect. But even without the temporal aspect, it would still act as a multiplier when it came to Steelpushes because of conservation of momentum. Besides, the true power of Feruchemy and Allomancy happens when using them in concert. One of the whole points of the Metallic Arts are to use them together to game the system. This is why so many think that magically Scadrial is no less powerful than Roshar, it's just that you have to hack the system properly to utilize its most powerful features. -

Except by all indications it would be a full multiplier. Especially if the person tapping speed is moving toward the thing they are pushing metal towards. The metal will push against the Fullborn while simultaneously being Pushed on by the Fullborn. That's simple physics. These implications will most likely be very important to the mechanical use of the Metallic Arts. -
I've viewed it more of compression (Push) vs stretching (Pull)

The fact that Bleeder could run down stairs at an accelerated pace and jump out of window and escape super fast, it does imply that they do fall at higher speeds as well -
Which is why I think that it's all really semantics and that Elantrians are effectively the same oder of beings as Returned. After all, they have far more in common with Returned than they do regular humans. Based on observations the only real difference between a Cognitive Shadow and an Elantrian is that they had their Physical Connection cut. But as is evident with Returned and Kelsier it is fully possible to Connect yourself back up to the Physical Realm and Elantrians do appear to require a Investiture to fuel themselves and remain alive
-
I broke this up to emphasize points. This is the issue, which is why Brandon often defaults to the in world belief rather than out and out saying it as the author. Just because Wax was resuscitated he still died and went to the Cognitive what makes him any less a Shadow than say Vasher or Kelsier now that he has a body? Returned require Breaths (or Stormlight), Kelsier presumably needs the Hemalurgic spike, and Elantrians need Investiture considering what we saw with the Ire Except they don't, they're still Elantrians. (part of a larger WoB)

Bands of Mourning vs other types of investiture
StanLemon replied to zpo73's topic in Cosmere Discussion
They effectively used the amount that could be stored in a ring per trait, a fully filled bracer should be more than enough to finish any fight very quickly Unlike with Stormlight, each trait is its own store and the stores of a normal Feruchemist, not even counting the massive amount Compounding can do, is comparable to Stormlight healing. Remember, in the books healing is one of the things that drains Surgebinders fastest. Shallan had to use basically all her stores to heal from an arrow in the head. I agree on Leeching a Spren not being practical but it wouldn't take more than a second or two to Leech the Surgebinder. The description from Wax and Marasi tapping the Bands was far more pronounced than sucking in Stormlight ever has been from say Kaladin when he was first using so I think as far as how much Investiture is actually greater from tapping the Bands. Also, the absurd inefficiency of Surgebinders compared to Metalborn implies that the actual amount of Investiture being used isn't all that much greater, just that the effects of Surgebinding in general are stronger. I'd argue that an Elantrian or any Returned is more Invested than any Surgebinder. So 'Investiture level' doesn't seem like much of an argument Brandon has said that it causes metals to burn faster (and that their is a slight temporal aspect but that is a whole other conversation), the logical extension of this is that their effects progress faster And? The Windrunner/Skybreaker have to come down sometime. Surgebinding is way less efficient than Allomancy when it comes to Investiture usage. Allomancers can regularly have enough Pewter the fastest burning basic metal for instance to burn for hours while Surgebinders will regularly use up their stores in minutes. The only times in the books that a Surgebinder has had enough Stormlight to go on for longer than that is when they've either had whole packs full of spheres or when Dalinar opened a Perpendicularity. -
I'm assuming you are referring to this WoB where he says they aren't because they didn't technically die. However, in this same WoB he goes on to define the in world categorization by definition is that it's someone who has died and who's mind has been "fossilized" by Investiture. But that theory even in universe is argued against because it implies that the soul has already departed. From our in-character perspectives of Kelsier and Wax, the soul already departing aspect seems...incorrect. At least in my opinion My argument is just because they haven't died doesn't mean they aren't effectively the same thing. The members of the Ire need to regularly consume Investiture, same as a Returned. Even away from Elantris, Elantrians are still Elantrians just that the visible signs lesson because of the distance from the source of power. And the Reod is discribed as mid transformation and Brandon repeatedly says that the Reod is a half alive state. So while they aren't technically Shadows, they are the same order of being

Bands of Mourning vs other types of investiture

On the topic of Metalmind storage. We often vastly underestimate just how much can be stored in one. The Goldmind from BoM which was described as a bracelet had enough Health in it that Wayne healed his broken body in seconds and using what he described as months of stored health and still remarked that the Goldmind was mostly full. And then you have the Bands themselves. They are about the size of the a hand but are made up of multiple metals (at least 16, possibly more accounting for Tin, Nicrosil, and Bendalloy) meaning each individual Metalmind is very small. Meaning that Marasi and Wax did amazing feats with relatively* small amounts of what's actually possible. *compared to how much would theoretically be possible with compounding as what was in them is was far more than a normal Feruchemist could likely store unless they spent years on it -
With Allomancy, alloy percentages must be exacting. There is no reason to believe this isn't the case for Godmetals too. Most likely only one percentage would be truly Allomantically viable to burn rather than all possible spren combinations

I think that they are much like the Returned. Cognitive Shadows stapled to a body, but in a different way and being constantly fueled by the Dor. The Shaod is described as an incomplete transformation but even if it was incomplete why would they be dead like.

While technically true, BoM showed that limit isn't problematic. Marasi was moving fast enough to leave a noticeable vacuum. To do that she would have to be moving a few times faster than the speed of sound. Far faster than anything we've seen can defend against -

I would say that they wouldn't have the speed. Abrasion removes the friction that slows them down but it wouldn't make them faster, most definitely not anywhere near the extent Compounding speed would. -
Bands of Mourning vs other types of investiture
StanLemon replied to zpo73's topic in Cosmere Discussion
What I meant was that speed on top of all the other powers is why there isn't really a defense against a Fullborn. Without the speed I could see a Herald at the very least putting up a good fight, but the speed pretty much outweighs what could be argued as a somewhat even fight. Also to add to your analysis. A Fullborn also has Electrum and Feruchemical Zinc for defense and predicting what the enemy will do -

Yup, that's always been my biggest problem with arguments that try to say others can beat Fullborns is that there really isn't a defense against that kind of speed -

If any Herald could beat a Fullborn it would probably be him. -
Bands of Mourning vs other types of investiture
StanLemon replied to zpo73's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This is the main weakness of the Bands. Effectively it's 16(?) Metalminds that together are the size of an average Feruchemist's Metalmind. Meaning they can pack a whole lot of power into a small space but the Bands aren't as full as the proper Metalminds of a Fullborn would be -
I'm sure there is a lot of context we desperately need. Like with Scadrial it looks like it might be a East India Trading Co kind of deal. Though it might just be the whole planet being jerks

What happened exactly to Hoid's memory?
StanLemon replied to Lightning's topic in Cosmere Discussion
You're correct on the point of Heightenings. The number is only an average marker. You gain the abilities on a spectrum and the amount of Breaths marking the Heightenings is what is usually needed to be considered to fully have the abilities of that Heightening. Because Breaths have different levels of quality (such as a child's Breath being better than an aged person's) this actual number can vary
