  1. I don't have any real casting suggestions (not my strong point) but I'd love to see the movie filmed in French and subbed, for atmospheric reasons. I know this is ludicrous if the film wants to be a widespread commercial success, but still...
  2. I'm not sure would have to check the book, but I seem to remember Marsh lamenting that the spike used in Penrod was too small to be of much use beyond giving Ruin a way in
  3. True the Vin and Ati fight didn't result in Splintering. I believe that this is because they were roughly equal im power, and so the holders both died together. However, I believe the theory is that if one Shard was significantly weaker (perhaps because they have deliberately partially Splintered themselves, such as Endowment) then it would allow Rayse to survive such a contest, then Splinter the power once it becomes free from a holder again. How this would be achieved I don't know, perhaps the Shards become vulnerable in Shadesmar when they have no strong Cognitive aspect to hold them together? More speculation.
  4. I didn't want to thread-jack, and although I'm sure there must be a good thread foe this somewhere, my forum-fu has failed me and I can't find one where this is the focus of the original discussion. So, how is it done? Does Odium wait until a Shard is already weak, before smashing himself against it (as per Vin taking down Ati, but more unbalanced)? I suspect if this was the method, he'd need a long time to recover as he'd inevitably be depleting his own essence by doing so. Others have speculated on the quote from Tanavast, that it may in some way come down to a fight between champions, some kind of Vassal chosen by the Shards. Still others have considered the idea that it in some way involves the larger population of a world, and that Alethkar and the Thrill may be a clue towards this. For myself, I don't know, but it's fun to speculate. As a final point, here's a quote from Elantris, the last line of chapter 6: A simple observation, or the legacy of Odium's visit to Sel? You decide!
  5. If a tiny shard like the tip of a sword, or the piece of metal Marsh sticks in Penrod can be spikes, I think a syringe can be too. I still think the 'donor' would lose the trait however, as tearing off a chunk of the soul doesn't seem like it would have any other result
  6. Ah, yes, I'd agree here. I meant to say that speaking the ideal didn't unlock the surge, I think you're likely correct when saying that living them does, and making the conscious decision to speak them aloud maybe 'attunes' you to them, allowing you to use them to greater effect. Also, I think you're too hard on yourself. Your theories aren't lame. It's just a matter of not having all the info to hand, we all make similar errors. Your ideas were fine based on what info you were working with; as you become more familiar with the material I'm sure we'll see lots of interesting stuff from you
  7. The lashings aren't all separate surges though. The gravitation-altering powers all come under the heading of gravity, and the binding surge is another type. This is actually confirmed by Brandon. Also, the ideals didn't 'unlock' any surges, as he was already using them, they gave him a power boost instead.
  8. I would imagine that they have explored to a certain degree, but given that a certain distance from the equator is needed for life to be sustainable - not just pleasant, I'm talking flat out possible - it's entirely plausible that they either assume there is nothing on the other pole, or their technology is not yet advanced enough to even travel through the uninhabitable 90% of the planet. Considering that we only developed long-range flight as a means of travelling to distant places which we KNEW were there, what incentive do those on the southern continent have? And that's assuming their technology has even progressed as far as manned flight.
  9. I can actually see (from our speculations about Copper 'absorbing' Seeker pings) a logic that allows for stacking. Put simply, there are now two Smokers 'absorbing' the incoming pulse from the Seeker, making it twice as unlikely that anything will bounce back to the Seeker.
  10. This intrigues me, and it certainly does explain Copper as an Internal Pulling metal. It throws Bronze for me now though. As a pushing metal, this would make a Seeker something like a sonar, sending 'pings' out which on contact with someone else burning metals are distorted and bounce back. This is somehow counter-intuitive, unless you speculate that what it bounces off is a separate pulse, or ripple, caused by that burning. This would allow it to remain consistent with the speculation of the power having a certain 'pulse' or 'wavelength' associated with it when accessed by an Allomancer (otherwise, it would just bounce off each allomancer with no identifiable pattern that Seekers can learn to read).
  11. I'm surprised by my own answer, given that I adore Mistborn and Stormlight Archives, but my favourite character in the Cosmere (so far) has got to be Lightsong. Almost every line of dialogue he utters is pure gold, which makes him a joy to read, but also his character arc is wonderfully executed, and genuinely moving. *edited for spelling error*
  12. I'm going to guess no. For one, it removes a lot of the surprises we as readers get to discover. Additionally, it leaves him no wiggle-room if he comes up with an awesome idea later and wants to implement it.
  13. I for one am curious as to why Roshar even has horses, given that they'd be very poorly adapted to highstorms. Either they evolved in Shinovar, or they're not native to Roshar at all. That's my belief anyway.
  14. Ati was a kind an generous man... then he became Ruin. I always figured the point of that part of the letter was to illustrate the effect a Shard has on the holder. So by the time of the Final Empire, I doubt if 'kind and generous' would apply to Ati still.
  15. Opportunity missed!
  16. Excellent find Sombrero! Though I can see the title being a reference to many things, figurative and in-world literal. I see no reason we should limit ourselves to choosing one.
  17. Also, just finished a Warbreaker re-read, and realised Denth's sister was named Shashara. I realise it's less relevant, as it's two examples from Nalthis, but still...
  18. Love the detective crew idea, but can I suggest instead of double steel, double zinc? Allomantic Zinc great for getting information out of people through emotional manipulation (as opposed to physical clues, which your double-tin has covered), and Feruchemical Zinc stores metal speed, for inhumanly fast deductive reasoning.
  19. No problem, and welcome to the boards For your own safety, watch out for mods, they have spikes (so far I've managed to avoid getting any through the cunning use of tattoos around the eyes). Also, if you're spoiler sensitive, best advice is to stay away from book-specific boards for the books you're planning to read, and the Cosmere Theories board in general as it contains spoilers for... well, pretty much everything
  20. The related books are: Warbreaker, Elantris, the Way of Kings (and its upcoming sequel, Words of Radiance), and the Emperor's Soul. Keep an eye out for Hoid
  21. My cat gave birth this morning
  22. Given that we know (or have very compelling evidence) that all magics on Sel are form-based and region-specific, I'd love to see a map of Fjorden with the pre-empire provinces marked out (so we knew the shape of Jindo, Svorden, etc). Was just looking at the Coppermind page on ChayShan, and the description of moving in 'specific circular patterns' got me wondering if Jindo was originally quite circular. Of course, it's just as possible that the hand-and-foot motions of ChayShan are actually describing the forms, or even the shape of the whole body. Roll on Elantris 2!
  23. Haha thanks KChan I can't believe I wrote shattered instead of Splintered, I'm usually so anal about terminology... Also, I wasn't aware that magic worked differently post-splintering. Whilst I agree we don't have enough evidence to rule out Dominion and Devotion creating a merged magic system pre-splintering, my gut wants me to believe that the magic was region-free before. But then, if that was the case, the forms of the Aons (and the base MaiPon form of Soulstamps) are hard to account for... so my guts are probably wrong
  24. I think you're misreading the quote. and To me, this says the order of events was Odium visits Sel, shattering Devotion and Dominon ---> The Seons are created ---> The Earthquake reshapes Arelon, temporarily making Aons non-functional, until the events of Elantris.
  25. Whilst I do agree with this sentiment, I'm not sure that it constitutes negative rep (at least not for a first offence). A poke in the right direction I think is more productive than anonymous and unexplained downvoting. However, as I mentioned previously, I do believe downvotes have their place.
