Range, actually. Now I think of it, a mistborn could still use bronze to detect another listing OUTSIDE their OWN coppercloud

Weight has nothing to do with allomantic Push/pull strength.
Senor Feesh replied to Khmauv's topic in Mistborn
I'm with Khmauv on this, although to get a final answer it maybe worth getting WoB. Additionally, the only relevance I see to Wax tapping weight in the above example (where he stands centre and pushes all around) is so that the body's incidental strength increase (necessary to deal with the extra weight) stops him crushing himself between anchors. similarly, by tapping before pushing at the ground beneath himself, he's preventing himself from simply flying straight up when he pushes against the nails etc in the floorboards. Without additional weight, he'd not have the anchorage to do so. Again, he could have anchored upwards (assuming there IS a sufficient anchor above him) but his push would have crushed him between anchors then. -
Marsh actually states it's possible with enough practice for a regular Seeker to do this. Vin uses duralumim to cheat

Coppercloud would also mask the bronzepulses the soother is creating

the most useless uses for useful powers
Senor Feesh replied to king of nowhere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
You don't necessarily need to know about the subject yourself, just change your history so that you spend time studying it. As someone else pointed out, Shai actually has a stamp that does this. All the stamp would need to say would be something like: studied under master artisan for five years -
Forgive me, I'm having trouble marrying up this with how extra Investiture affects things. Your post is as per Kelsier's explanation to Vin, which is if you push against an object weighing more than you do (or more firmly anchored) then the force of your push gets transferred to you (much like pushing with your arms against a wall - it doesn't give, so you do). Pushing against an object weighing the same as you will mean you're affected equally. From this you can infer that objects weighing less (or with less countering force) will be affected more by a push or pull, which tallies up with Wax weighing less and flying further. I'm not sure I see how this works with regards to Duralumin - I might be wrong here, but I'm sure I remember it coming up that Duralumin allowed more 'bang', and there are instances of Vin and Elend being able to push things they really shouldn't be able to push (I thought I also remembered Elend being able to push harder, but this doesn't necessarily translate into being able to shift more weight; it could just as easily mean more push being transferred back to him when pushing on a heavier object). I've not read the book for a few months however, and could easily be misremembering.

I we actually know the height achieved, we could probably infer a lot from this
-
Perhaps I should re-phrase it, but I'm pretty sure it still allows you to 'push above your weight', as it were, allowing you to move an object heavier than you (which would normally be impossible as normally you'd be the one to move).

Just a quick one; I'm curious as to how different amounts of Investiture effect the magic systems of the Cosmere. It seems that with enough Investiture one can bypass normal 'laws' of each system. So far the only observations of this I have are: Breath - enough Breath lets you bypass the 'requirement' (I use the term loosely, as it seems to work on a sliding scale) of needing a humanoid form and a 'focus' such as human hair to Awaken. At the Tenth Heightening also removes the requirement of touching an object to Awaken. Duralumin - allows an Allomancer to push on metals with an opposing force greater than their own weight without being pushed back in return. Also, a Lerasium-created Mistborn is considerably stronger than an nth generation Mistborn (as Investiture seems to be lost as the sDNA gets diluted). Similarly Hemalurgy can allow for power-scaling effects (such as piercing Copperclouds). Anyone think of other examples? Yet to come up with anything for Sel or Roshar (though there are half-shards... hmm, I'd like to know more about those...) Anyone able to think on other possible ramifications?

Taln's Scar. Something more than just a constellation?
Senor Feesh replied to Worldhopper's topic in Stormlight Archive
True, but that doesn't discount the possibility that the observed constellation Taln's scar is visually similar (and therefore possibly exists as a similar phenomenon) as the Milky Way as observed from areas of low light-pollution on Earth. -

I had a thought in the bath today (strange how inspiration strikes so often in the bathroom... maybe I should try and spend more of my day there ) Forgive me if this post seems erratic and scatty, I've not got all my thoughts in order yet, so this probably won't flow too well. I'm re-reading Warbreaker, highlighting what I think are important sections re: the larger Cosmere as I go (yay kindle!) and I've just gotten to the point at which Lightsong turns away petitioners and gets into a discussion regarding his own religion with Larimar. Larimar tells him: The wording here I think is important, which I'll come back to, but also: we know when you cross over, your soul makes a stopover in the Cognitive realm. Makes me think this is relevant to future-perception magics generally. Now, Isomere has started a topic http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3286-the-focus-on-roshar-is-waveforms/'>here which I think needs some love. He proposes that magic on Roshar is based around the idea of waveforms. I think this has some mileage. It also has implications for crossovers. Why I hear you ask? Breath. With enough BioChromatic Breath, you can perceive perfect colour and pitch recognition. If magic on Roshar is based on waveforms, this immediately becomes relevant (as colour and sound are both a product of wavelength). I'm not sure exactly what implications this may have, but again, stick with me, I'm going to keep going. We also know, in a mostly unrelated way, that Hemalurgy (what? We're on Scadrial now? Stick with me, I promise this get attempt to get stitched together at the end!) can be used to steal many different magical (and mundane) properties. Why should this be? If Ruin created Hemalurgy, why can it be used to steal powers granted by other shards? Why does sDNA have to be able to be affected by another Shard in the first place? We often talk of 'Preservation's power' or 'Honour's power', as though these are completely removed from each other - as though the shattering of Adonalsium split the power of creation along these lines of intent. I now think differently. I think that whilst each Shard has their own unique Intent, they each have a measure of the exact same, universal, power of creation, but this is filtered through the 'lens' of the Shardic intent it's tied to. And we see the evidence of this in the fact that people all over the Cosmere have Hemalurgic bindpoints which those on Scadrial could never have known of, or that the Waveforms on Roshar could be easily interpreted by an Awakener of sufficient Heightening. I might even go so far as to suggest that an Awakener would have an easier time making sense of Allomantic Bronzepulses, or the 'rhythm' of the Dor. This may also go some way to help describe how Odium was able to alter things on Roshar so that he could influence events there - he doesn't need to change the nature of the inherent magics there, only to change the way in which the magic is interpreted (perhaps through altering sDNA, although I'm loathe to tough the topic of sDNA as I don't think we know enough about it yet). Looking back over this, I don't know that I've necessarily said anything that's not been said before... but it feels like a fresh revelation in my head. Does this sound right or wrong to anyone else? Would anyone like to add to this, tweak it, or contradict it? Go nuts! I'd love to know what you all think.

I think this is an excellent theory, and will be using it to inform a new theory of my own. Will credit you and link back to it when I've written it. Have formulated a larger theory which incorporates this http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3294-shardic-lens-theory/'>here - thanks for the inspiration!

Feruchemy isn't really end-neutral when you think of it
Senor Feesh replied to kroen's topic in Mistborn
I'm sorry you feel that way kroen. I don't know why your initial post was downvoted (I don't see anything more than a misunderstanding myself); however the reason for keeping the voting system anonymous is to try and prevent people being dragged into 'rep wars'. As Windrunner and Shivertongue have mentioned, if you feel that someone is victimising or harassing you, a quick PM to one of the site Admins can get this taken care of (they CAN see who's doing the downvoting). So while someone could abuse their anonymity, the mods can soon sort out that kind of abuse. -
I would agree with the above; cadmium compounding should give a higher rate of return than gold compounding (for the purposes of breathing only). A gold compounder is effectively bypassing the need to breathe because their body is regenerating faster than the lack of oxygen is causing damage. I don't see this being near as effective as having loads of breath stored. I wonder though, if Miles could still function properly without oxygen? Sure, he wouldn't die for a long time (until he ran out of stored health) but the body uses oxygen to fuel chemical processes required for effective brain function, amongst other things. Thoughts?

Feruchemy isn't really end-neutral when you think of it
Senor Feesh replied to kroen's topic in Mistborn
Cooling yourself when it's hot, whilst obviously beneficial, doesn't bypass the end-neutral nature of Ferruchemy. End-neutral doesn't refer to the amount of benefit a craft person might be able to gain; it refers to the transfer of power/attributes. So yes, someone can store heat to cool themselves, then tap that same heat when it's warm later, but they can't get back more then they put in. Compare to Allomancy, where a nugget of metal can give you strength you never had, or senses beyond the norm, or the ability to suppress others' emotions. This all comes direct from Preservation, with the metal acting simply as catalyst to give you access to the power. Ferruchemy, by contrast, you have to be the 'battery' that charges the metalmind to begin with. -
Sorry to keep harping on this point, but Brandon has confirmed that Seons are NOT splinters. The Aon at the centre of the Seon is the splinter. This being the case, I think this affects your statement that splinters are sentient (and possibly other aspects of this theory) EDIT - thinking further on this, I think there's evidence suggesting that Splinters, like Shards, need to connect to a conscious mind to function properly. IIRC, a Returned is not a splinter either, but the Returned Breath is, which bonds to a host that has a cognitive aspect (the recently deceased who meets the currently unknown but highly speculated upon criteria for returning). DOUBLE EDIT - apparently I wad replying without reading the whole thread, apologies to those who had already discussed the points I was making above

I'm assuming this is referring to Kelsier being killed with a spear (am I correct saying Mistborn spoilers on the Mistborn board don't need tagging?). If this was done correctly, the spear would become a Hemalurgic spike. I have not personally seen anything to confirm that this is the case; however I can't claim to have read every single interview (or the entirety of the Theoryland database for that matter). If the spear IS a spike, though, I wonder what it stole...

Alternatively, win a contest on 17th Shard a little late now, but maybe next time!

Call that skill and experience vs power. Marsh is a very capable seeker, and never had to learn any other metals.
-
Are you sure that was Duralumin-enhanced? I thought that was simply her using Marsh's training coupled with her Bronze-spike earring, thought it's been several months at least since I read Mistborn.

Vin couldn't, or at least it was never mentioned.

All Cosmere-related answers from the AMA (4/15/2013)
Senor Feesh replied to Kurkistan's topic in Events and Signings
Juicy nugget! Can we infer from this that Hoid would have been interested were the power in another state? I'm guessing yes. -
Ok, on the reddit AMA just noticed something I'd not seen before, apologies if it has been mentioned already. Someone asked if Odium would become a metal if he went to Scadrial. The answer was that this was tied to Identity, and that Odium would need to tinker with things on Scadrial to make this work. Most interesting to me however, is that Odium has already done this on Roshar. Forgive my inability to link to a specific reddit post, but here's the quote:
