  1. He said Densities was a world we knew. Perhaps Broken Sky and Vapours are Yolen and Taldain? Though I like Leuthie'a interpretation
  2. Consider also that all mantic alloys do need to be prepared correctly. I don't know if the process is as important as the ratio (allomantically speaking) but it's worth considering.
  3. Before I begin, this is speculation as I have never read Dragonsteel. Therefore I hope I don't run afoul of spoiler policy. Could it be Hoid's master? I seem to remember hearing somewhere that he was supposed to be dead, but there may be an out for this (especially as I'm not sure of the source for that). Also, perhaps Hoid's master had more than one apprentice? No other ideas jump at me right now.
  4. Actually I can see that. The 'feast I must drink clings to their faces' could easily refer to the gemstones the Parshendi wear in their hair/beards.
  5. I think this may have been suggested in another thread, though possibly couched in slightly different terms. One possible interpretation is that the 'soul' of the arm is severed, but still resides in the physical flesh of the arm (a la Hesina's explanation of Spren and rocks) and the healing simply rejoins them rather than regrowing a spiritual segment. Though that feels a bit odd given that we know a human soul stays in one half of a bisected body, I think the fact that the physical body remains intact might allow for it. /speculation.
  6. I usually tell people it's an inversion of a common fantasy trope. It's really common to have heroes fighting some nebulous dark lord who wants to remake the world in his own image. It's rarer to find a world where that already happened, and far enough in the past that most people simply accept it as normal. So I guess that, added to the much more concise comments above.
  7. Yeah, I'm fairly lucky in that my RP group doubles as a book-club if one of us finds an awesome series, we'll share the love around and know that most of us share very similar reading tastes. If you want to get your friends involved, find a parallel to the books they already love. Exciting combat scenes? Mistborn and Way of Kings have some of the most visually exciting fight scenes I can recall. Excellent and consistent worldbuilding? ANY of Sanderson's books Fan of epics? Stormlight Archives, for sure. Want something easy to read but with surprising depth? Warbreaker. There really should be something for all tastes here
  8. I wonder if some of these death visions may not be hints as to KR orders. The quote Phantom gives above is very like Kaladin's experience in the Highstorm, but what if others who could potentially become Windrunners have experienced this too? Maybe it wasn't that he was out in the storm that triggered his vision, but a near-death experience (albeit at the hands of the storm)? This could also pan out with the vision of Shadesmar, as we know that Shallan and Jasnah go to Shadesmar to soulcast. Perhaps some of the other death visions correlate in some way to other KR abilities?
  9. Hello and welcome I'm sure you'll fit right in Someone said recently Dragonsteel was to be 5 books long, but I don't know if that's confirmed. Is Elantris confirmed as a trilogy? Alloy I would count; it's a full novel not a novella. Silence Divine might go into the Emperor's Soul category however.
  10. Interesting proposition, not sure if it feels right for me personally. After his repeat inception he does have the intent to draw a rithmatic line; maybe belief is a factor. Hard to say at this point.
  11. I like this. I don't know if you're right about the details, but the rain-damage and renovation is just the kind of insignificant-seeming detail that'll crop back up in a later book and suddenly be super-relevant.
  12. I guess this comes back to us not really understanding the Oathpact still. We know they're supposed to go willingly into damnation if they survive the battle, so it's presumably a matter of keeping to honor and their oaths. I suspect it's in some way similar to Ati and Leras' bargain. Let's assume Odium has the chance to try and destroy the world every 1000 years with a desolation (rather than constant desolations). The trade off for this is that he must have the Heralds to abuse and torture between desolations. Now that the Oathpact is broken, the next Odium won't have to wait another 1000 years before attempting to destroy everything, hence this next desolation being referred to as the Everstorm. Which raises an interesting notion that the desolations usually would have had to be restricted in scope (perhaps another condition of the Oathpact). Either a time limit, or a limit on the amount of forces that could be brought to bear. Thoughts?
  13. Perhaps the Unmade are the true anti-heralds, and the Ten Fools are in some way a metaphorical interpretation (I'm thinking along the line of fables). After all, Brandon said there was a step between them
  14. I would think we can let Feruchemy slide here, that's a really nitpicky point regarding Thermodynamics and one which I'm personally willing to ignore. Also, I fear there may have been some confusion during the thread between compounding (storing an attribute and pulling it back out at a faster rate for diminishing returns) and Compounding (available to Twinborn at your local Bank of Investiture, whereby one feruchemically charges a metal before allomantically burning it to release the feruchemical effect for a higher return on initial investment).
  15. I'm with Kurk on this as far as the Spiritual Realm goes; there does seem to need to be an 'Ideal Window' somewhere in the Spiritual for those Brandon quotes to make any sense. Spren are pretty much the ideal example of this, but I'm confused as to why they bleed over into the Physical. As this only seems to happen on Roshar we can assume it's something unique to that planet, or the interaction of Roshar and the Shards which call(ed) it home. I'm not sure on the overall Realmatic interactions or how the model needs to be, and I don't really have the time or inclination to try and delve into it in as much detail as Kurkistan has (right or wrong, he's made a monumental effort in attempting to understand it, and share that interpretation), but it seems that the cognitive aspect of window, and the spiritual 'Ideal Window' must be two related but different things.
  16. I have a similar issue. For the same reason, I can't stand things touching my throat. Wearing neckties is a special kind of hell for me.
  17. Read it! Lughtbreaker is shaping up to be an excellent trilogy
  18. I really like the way you're thinking, but for reasons already mentioned, I don't think you're correct. Also, Sanderson has mentioned somewhere the reason Atium can be used for Allomantic purposes. It's basically because the metal isn't the source of power; it's a 'key' that allows one with the correct sDNA to access Preservation's power. The structure of the metal determines the form that power takes in the physical world. I'll dig the quote up later.
  19. I did consider it might be an extra Cosmere clue o.O
  20. Rithmatist 2 is planned for (I think) 2014. This is to be an on-going series. So yes, those hooks in the ending were placed to be dealt with later - don't worry
  21. Ok, finally listened to Survival. Lyrically, I agree. Musically... it's lacking something. Urgency maybe? It's just too down-tempo for me to reflect that fight scene (though I could see a montage of Kelsier's life set to that song). As for Supremacy... again, the lyrics are a decent fit. I'm not a fan of modern-styled music for fantasy settings though. I find it detracts from my immersion. There's a reason the got Howard Shore for LotR, you know what I mean?
  22. Anyone in Denver? Apparently there're some stealth-signings with a bonus prize inside... kinda curious as to what that would be.
  23. More cosmere aware? I'll have a hard time until WoR comes out I suppose I can always go on another theoryland trawl. If I'm missing something fundamental here though, please fill me in. I'm not always able to keep it all in my head.
  24. I believe he's referring to the song Survival by the band Muse, and suggesting it would be a good song for Kelsier. I know Muse, but not he song, so I'm not able to comment.
