  1. There's no reference about spren and shin people, just that there are no spren in Shinovar. I can't see what you mean is odd about Szeth (in the context of this thread). He looks like an ordinary shin.
  2. There were many shin KR in Dalinar's vision.
  3. She sees the physical form of Wyndle, not the cognitive one. Otherwise, she would see the "distant sun" that is described both in shallan's and kaladin's interactions with shadesmar. How do you know what it's the "standard looking Edgedancer spren" ? Is Pattern "standard looking"?
  4. This is maybe a long-shot, but: * Syl is cousin to windspren * Wyndle looks like a vine And we have the following fighting stances: windstance, vinestance, stonestance, smokestance, ironstance, flamestance So maybe some of the other radiant spren look like: * stone (stonewards) * smoke (skybreakers) * metallic look (willshapers) * look like flame and cousin to flamespren (dustbringers) EDIT: if we consider the oily look of elsecallers and the pattern look of lightweavers, we are left with: * bondsmiths - may bind different types of spren * truthwatchers - Ym's spren was described, but Glys is a RAFO. maybe truthwatchers, like bondsmiths, may bond different types of spren - and this explains the position in the radiant chart of the bondsmiths and truthwatchers?
  5. Shardplate was not useful to Kaladin when fighting other shardbearers, because it allowed him to be faster, and stormlight would heal him enough when being injured by them. A shield was enough for him. But when fighting things like thunderclasts, one hit would gravely injure him (yes, he would heal, but slow, and he could be killed while incapacitated), while shardplate would allow him to continue fighting. A shield would not be enough to stop a blow. So i think it depends on the type of fight he has to do: he needs to be fast, and can sustain some injuries (damage from one hit is small enough to be healed fast by stormlight), or he needs protection (damage from one hit could incapacitate him and lead to death).
  6. See my EDIT
  7. Dalinar is not a shardbearer anymore. EDIT: also, shardbearers cannot be imprisoned for the simple reason that they can summon their blade and cut their way out of prison. Dalinar, even if he were a shardbearer, if arrested would never run out of prison, he would want to prove his innocence (from jail).
  8. Well, we were arguing that it makes more sense for Odium to take control of chasmfiends via spren (like he seems to be taking control over parshendi), than to have controlled parshendi taking control of chasmfiends.
  9. I think power forms grant <<power>> (magic ability, like surges), not <<size>>
  10. I remember it was distinctly specified that greatshells are bonded to spren, and this bond allows them to reach their size. Without spren, they could not get to that size (and live).
  11. My theory is that all great shells can bind spren like the parshendi. And during each Everstorm there's a possibility they will bind with a odium spren, and odium will take control of it => voidbringer.
  12. Kaladin uses a shardBLADE. In his fight vs Szeth, Syl changed between spear, shield and BLADE. I don't think he'll have any issue using plate.
  13. yes probably. if you meant that he won't use one of the "old" plates, of course he won't
  14. Investiture comes from a Shard. Shard has total control over the Investiture - I mean who gets access to it. You don't have a "natural" way to get to investiture, either you have a "key" to access it, or you don't. Usually, part of the "key" is a person's "DNA" (an attribute called Identity in Mistborn). The Honorblades are themselves a "key", they're a way to access Honor's Investiture that for anyone as long as they have a spiritual connection to the Honorblade - this means that a person's Identity (which is an aspect of the spiritual realm) is changed by the Honorblade's bond to allow a person to surgebind via Honor - but this is possible only because the Honorblade was created by Honor. Similarly, the Nahel bond alter's a person's Identity to allow access to the surges. This is again possible because the 10 spren are a "key" made by Honor. So, any other spren that was not created by Honor cannot modify a person's Identity in a way that allows access to Investiture from Honor => no surgebinding. I'm not saying that it's impossible to surgebind w/o the 10 spren or the 10 honorblades, but it's extremely hard - for example Hemalurgy (or Forgery) might be required. Since Odium is not on Roshar, but on another planet, I think that he can't give access to the 10 surges. So this leaves Cultivation. But Cultivation is already invested in the 10 types of spren, and i don't think you have large amount of cultivation spren buzzing around the planet.
  15. shardplate is a requirement in fighting voidbringers. he'll use one, and Syl will have a hand in creating it.
  16. KR's base was in Urithiru. We know from Dalinar's Midnight Essence vision that he was invited to train in Urithiru. I think "train" does not actually means combat training, but "train" to attract a spren. What if Urithiru was used only for dealings with the spren? The KR that came to help in Dalinar's vision were based in Alethela. They say those in Alethela train in war, protect the border, etc., such that the other kingdoms don't have to. This means that, after "training" in Urithiru, military KR are dispatched to combat train in Alethela. But the way that KR talked made me think of the "Highprince of War" title somehow. What if these titles were actually modelled after KR roles? - KR of war - based in Alethela - KR of information - based in <...> - KR of <...> ... KR from any order could join any of these "stations" (10 stations, in 10 places with oathgates) and work in one of 10 fields. Maybe this is why the oathgates are all connected to Urithiru - because they were not actually created for human business travel, but for KR deployment.
  17. No, surgebinding is granted by Honor, through the honorblades he created and the spren he created (with cultivation). So using any other spren (not created by Honor) for surges should be impossible.
  18. But that would mean that the surgebinding fabrial needs a kr spren trapped, I don't think that's how soulcasters work, or the regrowth fabrial used in dalinars vision.
  19. That control flaw is control of the parshendi, not control of the spren. While indeed we don't know what controlled spren do, it looks to me a stretch and too much of an advantage for odium to take control of a spren that bonds to a parshendi and thus takes control of parshendi. too complicated maybe just take control of spren, and that spren does something; and create odium spren that allows control of parshendi - much simpler to folllow
  20. Maybe soulcasters and Regrowth fabrials are not something "created", but linked somehow to an order's spren. E.g. similar in how the plate is created, they are connected to a radiant's spren, possibly can only be "created" by a max level radiant of a specific order.
  21. Lift: she visited the Nightwatcher and was given a boon and a curse. I don't think everyone that searches the Old Magic actually gets to the Nightwatcher, so Lift being one "chosen" for this made the spren send Wyndle to her. So it was not the Nightwatcher who chose her for KR, but the spren council. Shallan: my understanding is that Pattern was attracted to her, the the Cryptics allowed Pattern to bond her. Syl: she left the Cognitive against the wishes of the Stormfather, without anyone chosen for a bond. So she was kind of lucky to have found Kaladin. So we have a "i choose whoever i want", a "i choose someone but it has to be approved by a council", and a "i was sent to someone chosen by the council". My impression is that the more "cultivation" is in a spren, the more organized they are, and the more aligned to honor, the more independent. Oh, and I can't wait to see some Dustbringers!
  22. In any case, it's clear Heralds use the same bodies over time, and don't "possess" people from the current time. My reasoning for Taln being wet/having bits of stuff in his hair was that he died in a river and he spawned as he was before death. I agree the wetness can be because of materialization from wherever he was held, but the algae and whatnot can be from the river he died in last desolation.
  23. So this means Szeth now can kill spren?
