    Nekorb looked up, puzzled. "What do you mean?" Silence. He got to his feet cautiously. "Malu...? What did you mean?" His voice was swallowed by the darkness.

    Are we going to do anything? remarked Aqua with a bored tone.

    "Yeah," said Nekorb, staring into the fire. "That would be... that would be bad." Of course, if Malu got eaten Nekorb probably wouldn't long survive him. He hadn't seen much evidence of Malu's abilities so far, but he felt confident they would be more useful at insuring their survival than Nekorb's would. A part of him felt guilty at letting his partner run into danger alone. But Nekorb had no intention of running into a potentially fatal unknown.

    The consultant he hired should work. Fate gazed at him with an unreadable expression. "You will pay any price?" "Yes," whispered Xinoehp. "Just let this nightmare end..." Fate smiled. "It is done. Or," he raised an eyebrow. "perhaps it will be done. Or maybe it has been done already. Which, only time will reveal."

    The lamp was going out. Bit by bit, its radiance was dimming. And with it, its protection. Xinoehp didn't remember where he'd picked it up. He didn't know how it worked. But, somehow, it had protected him from the withergeists so far. He'd thought reaching the top of the mountain would provide an answer. A path to take that would let him fix everything. But nothing had shown itself so far. And now the light was dimming. He didn't want to think about what would happen if it went out.

    I don't know a whole lot about ships, hmm. Cruise ships sound pretty cool. I've never been on one, but some quick research seems favorable. Yes. But also no. There are an infinite number of paths to walk down, each with different outcomes. Who can say what the result will be?
