    Nekorb blinked, surprised at the abrubtness. "Okay, then." He stood up and followed Malu, stepping carefully on the slick cave floor. "We do know where we're going, right?"

    Sweat rolled down Jacob's face as he concentrated on powering the spear. He was gaining, black corruption disappearing faster than it could be replaced. But he'd come too late. And he simply wasn't fast enough. In theory, a piece of a withergeist could be ripped off and planted in the target. It would function as though the withergeist had never left, devouring the target a bit at a time. But that wasn't what was happening either. The tide of black slowed, and for a moment Jacob thought that it would stop entirely. But even as the mist pushed at the darkness, it began to turn dark itself, corrupted by the touch of the ruinous power. Still, the infection had slowed. Not by much. But enough. Jacob gritted his teeth and redoubled his efforts, desperate to stop the darkness before it was too late.

    Infection, thought Jacob. Not just corruption, but the spread of it as well. Uncharacteristic, for a withergeist wound. Withergeists tended to favor a simple, direct attack- no poisons or infections. Which left only one possibility; conversion. Now, although withergeists were made of ruinous energy, they did not always destroy everything they touched (not physically, anyways). Sometimes, they would possess things instead, taking control over something to further their goals. But that wasn't what was happening here.

    Jacob glanced at Sophie's wound and muttered something under his breath. He walked over and picked up the spear lying next to her. "This may hurt," he warned her, and stabbed it into her leg. With a blinding flash, the spear lit up. Golden energy flowed down the shaft, through the spearhead, and into Sophie's leg, burning away the infectious darkness.

    Nekorb hesitated, uncertain of how to reply. He'd avoided going ahead before because of the danger, but... the scouting team would discover any dangers, right? And he had to admit, the caves were interesting. Nothing he'd ever seen before had compared to what he had seen so far. And this was only the first cavern. What wonders could be lurking even further below? "Sure," he said, keeping his voice steady. "Why not?"

    Nekorb shrugged. "I guess it depends on what we find down here, right?"

    "Not really," said Nekorb. "There was something about a subway, I think?"

    Ecnelis quietly sipped his drink as the room devolved into chaos. Why did I think this was a good idea? he wondered. He coughed once, then took another sip of his drink. I could be doing so much more worthwhile things with my time. He'd just purchased a new book from the market this morning. It was waiting for him in his bedroom, promising at least two hours of entertainment when he returned. If he returned. ------------------- Greetings, fellow players! The elims can now make their assassination attempt on any turn. They will still fail their wincon, however, if it's just a normal attack.

    Enasni lurked in the shadows beyond the flickering light of the campfire, nervously watching his last four companions. He could hear the broken song clearly, now. What that meant, he didn't know. And until it disappeared, he wouldn't trust anyone. ------- Hmm, my thoughts? My scan on Aman revealed that he recruited ILuvHats. It didn't specify if the conversion was successful or not.

    Jacob peered through his glasses intently at the slip of paper, carefully inspecting each stroke written upon it. With a nod of satisfaction, he tossed it to the side, letting it float across the room and settle on the wall where it belonged. All of a sudden, a red light on the top of his clipboard started flashing. He stared at it for a second, startled by its unexpected appearance, before hastily scribbling out the requisite commands. In the blink of an eye, he stood by Sophie's side. ---- Aqua flickered nervously as the withergeist rose from the crumpled girl into the air. It wouldn't target her, would it? Surely not.
