I read the first couple of Sharpe books. I wasn't compelled to read more because Sharpe came across as kind of a jerk.

I think they had to delay the mainstream release. Some online stores originally had November as the release date, but now amazon and bookdepository have May 18th 2021 and it's not listed on Comixology any more. Someone in one of the discords said some people had been able to find copies at their comic stores, but that other comic stores had the May date, which seems unusual to me. Could be worth calling your local store(s) to check first.

Don't ask me, I prefer the ebook editions! It's much less strain on the little fingers to hold up a phone or e-reader than a full book. It doesn't get damaged or eaten by silverfish, and you can use the search function! Oh, I DID buy the smaller-dimension paperback of Way of Kings, that's the "Mass Market" edition I think? It's an abomination that shouldn't exist - very hard to read such a large book crammed into such small dimensions. Definitely get the Trade Paperback or Hardback over this edition.

If you subscribe to Brandon's facebook/twitter, I think he tries to announce on there when they restock leatherbounds.

I am thankful for modern medicine! Went to a ballet school's annual performance yesterday. There was a young boy there with cochlear implants, following his dream of ballet dancing. Almost made me cry.

Arthur Ransom's Swallows and Amazons series was something I re-read a lot.

Coup is a great game. The Resistance by the same people is also really good, but Coup is a game we can play with family, where Resistance is a bit too much for some of them. My favourite board games are: Battlestar Galactica, Galaxy Trucker, and Robo Rally (which I play with the 2016 mechanics but the 2005 boards).

My favourite was The Flight of the Doves by Walter Macken. I cringe at the huge number of Enid Blyton books I read.

I kept an eye out for this after seeing your post. I think the sides are all aligned, they just look like they're not because of the rounded edges of the cube, and the shading is weird. Here's a scene from the end of S02E06 where the moon rune looks like it's to the corner, and then he rotates it some more and the ocean rune is central.

Hmm. Just checked. Paula Burrows, the voice of Rayla, was born in Scotland of Scottish/USA parents but brought up in Canada. So I guess her normal speaking voice is with a Canadian accent. Her Rayla accent sounds super weird. Edit: here's her real accent

Rewatching the first season. This show has Song of Ice and Fire level hinting at a Very Important Thing, and then not confirming it for at least 2.5 more seasons. D: ***** Also, Rayla's fake Scottish accent is terrible, and it drives me crazy. Hire a voice actor with that accent, or change your expectations, don't make our ears bleed. (I guess American audiences often don't notice this, because you get SO MANY fake accents in your tv, video games etc, and so little media from those countries. To the rest of the world, the fake accents are really painful.)

I read Harry Potter when it came out, and I always enjoy re-reading them. I feel like a lot of people dislike them, not because of their content, but because of their popularity. Also, I suspect, because of the movies - slightly different issue to popularity. In my opinion, most of the movies were not very good (I think books of the length of 4 - 7 really need the mini-series treatment rather than movie, but anyway). There are people who have ONLY watched the movies, they didn't enjoy them, and they judge the books on that, which I find very unfair. I finally watched the movies of the last three books just a year or two back. I'm never going to watch any of the movies again. I have been accused of reading Harry Potter only because it is popular (not here, in other conversations), which makes me very annoyed. I read the first one before it was popular, and was extremely surprised when the series became actually known outside of the reading community. But, I get that push-back against things that get over-hyped. If I'd tried to read it after it was already popular, especially book 1 with stuff like "nitwit blubber oddment tweak", I probably would have reacted quite differently. "People are going nuts for THIS?!" But I read it as a random book that we'd picked up from the library, and it was charming and original, and I liked it, and I still like it. And, back to the original topic. I did find it very refreshing to have a very unkind character who is on the side of good. It's so rare in fiction. But does happen in real life. There have definitely been moments IRL where people I'd written off as being just awful would surprise me by backing me on something, or going out of their way to do the right thing. I don't like how black and white things usually are in children's books. (It's reminiscent of that even worse trend where beautiful people are always good and ugly people are always bad, I always appreciate authors smashing that horrible trope. Jadis being beautiful was superb.)

Unpopular Brandon Sanderson Opinions

Oooh, that IS unpopular! But the good news is that Alcatraz 6 is probably not very far off now. It was "basically all complete" at the end of last year, so hopefully we'll get it next year! -

I can't not share this Babylon 5 scene. "What is truth? And what is God?"

Good! Brandon says it ". . . AY-ah loon-ah more." AY rhyming with hay. And in his last live-stream, Isaac had a go, and pronounced each vowel separately. Something like "ah-ee-ah loon-ah moor" which is definitely wrong. *This is assuming that Brandon actually intends Horneater to follow the pronunciation rules of Polynesian languages.
-
Pet peeve, since Brandon says he based horneater language on Polynesian languages. It would be Noo-moo hoo-koo mah-kee ah-kee EYE-ah loon-ah more The 'ai' diphthong in Polynesian languages is pronounced like the word "eye", not like the letter A. Edit: Also, the Polynesian languages I'm familiar with, all the words end with vowels. And the Rs are lightly rolled. So, an R at the end is weird.
