  2. I think not liking Lopen is the true unpopular opinion! I felt quite annoyed with him for . I didn't think it was OK! </unpopular opinion>
  3. I have a serious unpopular Brandon opinion. I can't stand Michael Kramer's reading voice, and I find it very hard to follow. I wish Brandon would be one of those authors who has two versions of audiobook narrators to choose from!
  4. But it worked for Phantom Menace!
  5. It was pretty great. I'm bummed that the merchandising focused so much on the new trilogy more than Rogue One. I'm also bummed that there isn't yet an extended Making-Of documentary or Deleted Scenes collection. (Only a few minutes of making-of that comes with the DVD/Bluray).
  6. Yippee! It's popped up on Overdrive. I've already hit the "recommend" button for my library, so hopefully they'll pick it up when it's released (scheduled for 14th September). :-O (A couple of Sanderson's other Graphic Audio things have appeared on Overdrive too - Elantris and Warbreaker are the ones I particularly noticed)
  7. https://www.bookdepository.com is a good place for well-priced books. Free shipping worldwide!
  8. Yeah, I mean, normally I'll take the stance that our appreciation of art is subjective. People's opinions and experiences are different and need to be respected. Your response cannot be wrong, because it's your true reaction to the media in question . . . But in this case - no. That's clearly wrong.
  9. It's OK, we can all know in our hearts that Kyle Katarn stole the real deathstar plans
  10. He talks about that here. ' "If we publish this as a hardback, it's gonna be a $50 hardback", and I was like "Oh, I'm not gonna be the guy who sets THAT post" '
  11. Play back audiobooks at 0.5x speed.
  12. Don't worry, he doesn't make a habit of that kind of thing. It's one guy reading the books*. He does quite a good Leanansidhe IMO. James Marsters, who played Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. IMO he's a very good audio book reader. *they get a lady to read the female POV short stories though.
  13. Heh heh heh, poor all the other authors.
  14. Woo! I'm up to Peace Talks, just read the first chapter! I read all the short stories, microfiction and comics. Those short stories are some of the best I've read, and most of them are almost required reading for the universe. Those comics - not good. Welcome to the Jungle is the only one referenced in the novels. War Cry is the one with the best story IMO, except for the entirely needless spoiler in the final panel. D: The rest were just not worth reading, and Wild Card was actively bad.
  15. Yup, he was legitimately a horrible person who worked on the side of good. Not something you see often in the good versus evil tropes, and I appreciated it being there.
  16. For me the lowest was TLJ. And I think the reason I enjoyed Rise of Skywalker at the theatres was profound relief that it wasn't insulting me like TLJ seemed to be trying to do. TLJ: Oh, you expected this promising plot arc to go somewhere? Well it's actually going down this hole! Bet you didn't expect THAT! You big dummy. ^ and I've just been listening to Writing Excuses podcasts about "keeping promises" to your readers, and having proper payoff. Also, that soft fourth-wall-break in the opening sequence. Star Wars does not have secretaries and telephones. Putting someone on hold is such a 20th century earth thing to do. D: I seriously cannot even re-watch that film, it just makes me angry. ****************** So, back to Rise of Skywalker. Yeah, it was like babysitting a child, and you're giving up your time to do it. They're not particularly fun to babysit. But compared with the kid who smears poo all over the walls, on purpose, it's really good to be babysitting the boring but well-behaved kid!
  17. Having that one character who was a big mean jerkbag the entire series . . . on the side of good, while actively being mean to the protagonist the entire time (the movies toned him down quite a lot IMO), I thought that was really good.
  18. I felt like I enjoyed it when I watched it at the movie theatre. But when looking back on it for the best bits . . . I came up really blank. The part I liked most was but that story line got shot in the face about 20 second later, so :< I have a space on my DVD shelf for Star Wars. I've got my Box Set with the un-Lucased-laserdisc-edition of the original trilogy, and I've got my Rogue One. The only thing I feel is missing is The Mandalorian tv series. I hope that gets DVDs. Maybe a good-bits-montage of Phantom Menace might be nice too, and that's really the only Star Wars I care about any more.
  19. But it can be better if you read the same-character-stories in order. For some more than others - Guards! Guards! is indeed a really good starting place, and it's good to read before other City Watch stories. Soul Music is one of the best. The whole Moist von Lipwig and Tiffany Aching series are great. Thief of Time is amazing. The first few books were still finding their feet, which is why The Colour of Magic isn't recommended as the first book to read. All the Discworld books, but listed by main characters: City Watch: Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, Night Watch, Thud!, Snuff Witches: Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade, Carpe Jugulum Death: Mort, Reaper Man, Soul Music, Hogfather, Thief of Time Moist von Lipwig: Going Postal, Making Money, Raising Steam Tiffany Aching (Children's/YA series): The Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith, I Shall Wear Midnight, The Shepherd's Crown Rincewind/wizards: The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Sourcery, Eric, Interesting Times, The Last Continent, The Last Hero, Unseen Academicals Other: Pyramids, Moving Pictures, Small Gods, The Truth, The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents (children's), Monstrous Regiment PS Eric and The Last Hero are originally highly-illustrated, and that's the best way to read them, if you can find those editions.
  20. If you liked Dresden, there's a somewhat similar series called Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. If you watched the most recent live-stream, he's the guy who blurbed the UK cover for Rhythm of War and Sanderson said he really liked Rivers of London too. The first book is called Rivers of London in the UK, or Midnight Riot in the US.
  21. But, saying you dislike (or like) something is indisputable, you shouldn't have to convince anyone of your personal tastes.
  22. The "mental issues" one, I think he started out bad and got better. The autistic kid from Elantris - urgh. Steris is a WAY more enjoyable ASD character, but she is really over the top. I like her, but I could understand people who don't. Gender - I've never had issues with the way he writes girls. I'm reading Dresden Files, and I got to a Murphy POV short story that was just cringeworthy in a lot of ways, never had issues with that for Brandon. Sexuality - the only character I can think of, it was kind of a "oh by the way, she's not into guys", which I thought was appropriate. It was building knowledge of the character, like any other background info would. I've been really put off by books that I felt were trying to shock me with the gayness of a gay character while the story has gone AWOL.
