You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Eluvianii replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
So a few days ago I went to a book fair and, you guessed it, the first thing I did was scan the entire place looking for Sanderson books. That said, YKYASFW in said fair you find only a few copies of Elantris and a single copy of Words of Radiance and you get sad realizing that likely nearly no one in your city knows the goodness of his books. -
Edwin lost his balance for a moment as Shana rolled on the ground evading his thrust and the naginata hit Nym who was farther than he was prepared for. Before he could apologize, Nym fell on her knees and grabbed Shana's leg. Was she trying to bring Shana down? With the two struggling he wouldn't be able to take another swing without a high risk of hitting Nym again. He positioned himself waiting, ready to strike as soon as the two got separated. @Sorana @Aragorn

Edwin hit Shana on the back as she turned to Nym and she quickly changed position so she could face both Nym and him. Right, abrassion. If this was to work, they would have to coordinate their movements, he had landed that hit only because they both were striking at the same time, if they could keep that going... He shortened the distance between him and the other two when he saw Nym swinging towards Shana's chest. Now. He didn't have time to get behind Shana to do a pincer attack but stopped at her side and thrust his weapon, aiming for her left arm. @Sorana @Aragorn

Shana was letting them have the first move. Nym made a gesture and went for the left, Edwin got the message and started running for the right flank. When they got close he swung trying to hit Shana on the back.

Edwin thought for a moment. Why did she have such a heavy load on her shoulders? They were supposed to be a team and share that burden. Risk herself to beat her enemies more quickly? Whichever way he saw it, it was more than any of them were supposed to carry. But he had to save that line of thought for another time, Nym and Shana were already preparing for the next round. Shana would face them both at the same time. "Two versus one now? Well, I gotta say it sounds fun." They were most likely still at a disadvantage though. "So, Nym, as you just saw I'm pretty new at this fighting thing, so bear with me, please." That was assuming she already had experience fighting but she literally had just been in a battle and Edwin knew virtually nothing about her. Assuming she was inexperienced based on her age could prove bad for someone's health, especially when there were magic powers involved. And she had a Shardblade.

Lewis put the letter in the box. Sirens, had they found the body? Perhaps it was that and now they were coming to register the victim's house. Of course they would, simple logic. "I second leaving. Did anyone see a back door we could use? Maybe in the kitchen?" he heard Kira asking. "I really hope the answer is yes, because otherwise, I have a really stupid idea that I really don't want to use." "Nothing in the kitchen." he said. "Maybe it's in another place. What do you have in mind?"

It worked. Somehow it had but Shana blocked it and started another attack immediately. Edwin didn't have time to react. He lifted his weapon to try and block the blow in his upper half --she was too fast to know exactly where she would hit-- but instead felt a sharp pain on his hip and the next second he was on the ground. How did she do it? He hardly had time to see she was attacking, Shana hadn't wasted time thinking, she just acted. He got up slowly, his hip hurting a bit. "That was, kinda awesome." he said. By the side he saw Nym standing with a glowing rapier in her hand. How long had she been there? He didn't notice. "Hi." he said. "You come to train too?"

Edwin thought about Shana's words. If he had to fight for a friend's life? Of course. It wasn't only about catching up with the rest, it was about protecting them too, as they would protect him if there was the need, which he knew all too well would come again. "Yeah. Yeah, you're right." he took a deep breath. "Let me try again." He took a step back and gripped the weapon once again. He had a little idea suddenly. The Cohesion of a First Ideal didn't allow for much, but maybe it wasn't necessary, if he could replicate what he did last night perhaps... Edwin took a few more steps back and looked at Shana for a moment before starting running towards her. He needed a contact point with the ground but hopefully his feet would be enough. Concentrating on the area below Shana, he tried to make a little concrete pool beneath her left foot, hoping to make her lose balance. Then immediately he swung the weapon upwards without having time to even know if the trick had worked.

Just starting, so far it seems this is going to be an amazing trip. I just hope I can catch up some day.

I've always liked that idea of Mistborn as a story-driven RPG. It could be split in action and Game of Houses sections. In the action ones you would mainly use physical metals. It would take a lot of skill to juggle them but I'm thinking a slow-motion system would help with that, like, when you have to shot coins time slows so you can choose a numer of targets (depending on your level) or for movement maybe have an option to choose several anchors and when time starts moving again, you hit al the targets or make that stunt in one swift movement. Those actions could cost flaring the metals. As for the other sections, it could be walking around the city during daytime or attending parties and stuff like that to get information, that's where emotional metals come into play. Maybe craft a system where depending on who you affect, with which metal and on what level, they give you different answers, so that the information gathering would be entirely up to the player giving a sense of freedom. This would be completely unnecesary but maybe have an online mode with team battles where each team has a limited number of players, each one a misting specialized in one metal? Physical metals would be the attack power and emotional metals the support (like lowering speed or attack power with the pretext that they confuse them or lower their motivation). Warbreaker could work with the character collecting ideas on how to use Awakening, either along with the story or by the player finding something that makes the character say "Hey, I could use this.". They would have to carry a stack of cloth pieces for the color and probably have certain objects in the enviroment work as fuel too. Aons are easy enough, you learn them, you use them. So I think it could be a mistery game with a big map with a with the pacing of the story up to the player. To advance you have to discover secrets, to access those secrets you need certain aons, so you have to find where to learn them. The more you advance the more map and characters you have access to. You get the idea. I completely agree with Stormlight as a strategy RPG but since I live for traditional epic RPGs I'll throw my idea because why not. What about a game series (or a really long game) where you control a set of Radiants where you have to take decisions for them and at the end of each game (or each chapter in the one game scenario) they have to swear an Oath but depending on the decisions you take they might not swear it, so the only way to see the true ending is if you manage to make all of them advance on their Radiancy. The combat system could be either real time or turn-based but I think turn-based would work best since otherwise you'd have to ask the players to master ten different playstyles potentially. This way, having multiple characters at a time is easier. So, the battles would occur in a grid with free movement to allow each order to shine. You would have Windrunners and Skybreakers flying over the terrain, Edgedancers attacking several units a turn by dancing among them, Elsecallers throwing sticks on fire, Lightweavers placing decoys or confusing enemy units, Stonewards creating pools for the enemies to fall on or using plushies as throwable weapons, etc. Of course normal battles would be pretty simple as you wouldn't want to waste Stormlight in lower enemies but this would allow for some pretty impressive boss battles I think. This is all I can think about right off the bat.

Edwin took the bag, Shana seemed to be trying to reassure him, and he was grateful, but these things looked like they would hurt. For now he put them aside, Stormlight or not, it would be better to avoid blood, probably. Though she was the strongest among them, so he didn't discard needing the crystals later. You try to get at her and she tries to get at you? Alright, easy enough. Edwin followed Shana to the middle of the room ad gripped the training weapon with both hands. "Alright then." he said and stood there for a moment, before charging and swinging diagonally towards her. Even though he told himself he could go all out, that for her it would be like fighting with a kid anyway, the swing ended up being weak, even for him. Training or not, it was hard to try and willfully hit a friend.

Trails of Cold Steel (and the Kiseki series in general)
Eluvianii replied to Zurvanight's topic in Entertainment Discussion
"We don’t make products that have the same universality of something like One Piece, for example. What we make isn’t going to be accepted by everybody, like something like that. But by the same token, the people that it does resonate with, it resonates with very, very deeply. And those are the kind of people who are with us for the long term." "The thing about game development right now is that it seems to necessarily require more people than it used to. In the past we could get away with making a game with maybe four or five people, but those days are over. And so now we need more people, but we’re not going to grow the company just to be able to do that because what happens when you do that is rather than making games, suddenly you’re managing people. And I don’t want to manage people. I want to make games." I'm more convinced every time that Toshihiro Kondo is the kind of example I want to follow. Here's the full interview if anyone's interested https://metro.co.uk/2019/10/02/toshihiro-kondo-trails-of-cold-steel-3-falcom-interview-who-we-are-are-people-who-love-to-make-video-games-10847026/ -
"Well, I'm learning to use this one." he showed her the naginata, it was basically a mix between a staff and a sword, with the blade in one end. Though he changed it for another one that wasn't covered in blood. "As for surges, I can barely use Cohesion, but I'll try. So, umm, how do we go about this?" Thinking about it, it was his first time actually doing combat training with someone else. He usually spent most of his time trying to melt rocks, liquefy the floor or practicing with a weapon alone, not confident enough to train with the others.

Edwin looked up to Shana. She wanted to train? They had been fighting just minutes before, it had been enough exercise for a week. He didn't know a lot about Shana though, maybe that was how she relaxed, which was kind of a need right now, he couldn't turn her down if that was the case. Besides, he needed to train too if he wanted to keep up in future battles. "Sounds good." he said, getting up. A little extra effort for the day wouldn't hurt. "Just let me..." he walked to the front door and looked just outside. The weapon was there, casually left against the wall, he probably would have to clean that up later, but it was better than leaving blood all around the living room. He walked back there where Shana was standing. "I'm ready. I'm a beginner though, is that alright?"

It was empty again. There weren't even any bodies, Rob had made sure of that, and the house was once again an island in the middle of nothingness. Edwin started walking towards the house slowly. He was tired, thanks to the Stormlight he didn't have injuries but he was really tired, especially now that he wasn't using it. He wasn't even sure if it was justified, he hadn't done as much as the others. He had killed too. For the first time in his life, he took another's, something that would be enough to give nightmares to anyone, but in his face was a slight smile. He felt bad, of course. it was certain that as soon as there was space for it in his mind he wouldn't be able to get it out of his head but for now, he was satisfied. After all, he had been useful for once. He had finally started walking where the others were running and for now, that would be enough to get through the night. In the house, Edwin walked to the living room and slumped on the couch. He wondered if they would continue with the party. It seemed wrong, somehow, but it was just as wrong that every time they tried to have fun this happened.

Ryan climbed up the, thing. It looked similar to some orbal cars he had seen, but those didn't fly. He supposed the design looked like some ships too. Kinda. But what were the wheels for? No point in trying to make sense out of anything here he decided, and took a seat. "Ready."

Marcel had pulled out yet more clues, the man that lived here sure wasn't careful, but Lewis was still curious about the newspaper so he took it to have a better look. They were right, there were dots only in parts with text. Not only that but each dot was exactly in the position of a letter. He tried following them. W - H - E - N - T - H - E - S --- "When the sun kisses the horizon, the time to open the portal has come." he read slowly almost whispering.

Another vehicle --and stranger than the last one, if that was possible--, the last two times that hadn't went well. And trusting his transport to those two was still an idea he didn't very much like, but since the alternative was jumping off a building he couldn't even see the ground from, he went along with it, yet again. "Where to now?" asked Ryan.

It would have happened if Kaladin had been willing to trust Dalinar (by that point he hadn't told Dalinar about his experience with Amaram, right? I can't really remember), but he was so stubborn that all the proof in the world wouldn't convince him that a lighteyes could be completely trustworthy. Also, if anything I think Kaladin owes Dalinar for throwing him into prison, he literally saved his life by doing so. Adolin was against it and he was right too but he tends to not see the bigger picture. Letting Kaladin go would mean a big punch to Dalinar's reputation, which would give the other highlords yet another reason to band against him. Dalinar knows how to play and that's about the only reason he's been as succesful as he's been so far, actions like letting Kaladin go unpunished could have us without a bondsmith already. Politics are a thing, and in cases like this, ignoring them would be suicide. Going back to Kaladin, I think he was right (obviously) in wanting to do something about Amaram but was wrong in his motives. Amaram was clearly doing bad things under the table and Kaladin was probably the only person who knew, but he didn't want to stop him because he was a bad person and that was the right thing, he wanted revenge. He was so blinded by that, he ignored all the holes in his plan and went for it thinking of that revenge as just and honorable. The result was a good while on prison and the start of a broken bond, which I think says it all. Thinking about it, he jumped into the duel because it was the honorable thing to do and no one else would do it, and yet, in the end he tried to take advantage of it, not that he didn't deserve something but it's like he forgot why he jumped into the fight in the first place.

It was hard to see outside, not because of a lack of light but because there was so much movement, you couldn't set eyes on anything for more than a second before something else took its place. Edwin swung his weapon at a Voidbringer coming at him. He aimed for his upper half but only cut through his leg slightly, making the Voidbringer fall and Edwin with him a few meters apart. The thing was heavy and hard to control. Games make this look easier. He didn't have time to complain more because the Voidbringer got back up and tried to run towards him, limping but gaining speed. Edwin turned the naginata around and with an effort swung at a wide arc in front of him that caught the Voidbringer in his run, making him fall again. Edwin got up slowly and walked to the figure on the ground. The man wasn't moving, but with Light he would be up in no time. Instead he slammed the blade into the man's heart, the Voidbringer's heart, and started running, looking for the next one. It was the first time he killed somebody, but strangely he didn't feel as terrible as he thought. Maybe it was because he knew the redeyes wouldn't have hesitated to kill him. Either way, it was for the better, as that one wouldn't be the last.
