  1. First off, I'm the slightest bit disappointed that we didn't get a Kaladin chapter this week, but oh well. I do think there's something going on with that glyph he sent. I don't see the Parshman letting him send a message. Very interesting stuff for Shallan this time, way to go Adoulin for aborting the conversation I was dreading between Kaladin and Shallan at some point. I would totally go watch lightweaver theater! I wonder what other special facilities they have in Urithiru for Radiant residents. Shallan's story is giving me some really strong dejavu vibes, and I don't know why. I feel like I've heard it before though. Like... It's really bothering me. The Unmade is appearing to Shallan through her drawings, I wonder if Renarin is being affected by the Unmade that's haunting Urithiru somehow, we've barely seen any of him so far. The Dalinar chapter is one that we've got before, I think in The Thrill. Either way, some nice tidbits about the Thrill here (I agree with the people that have said it reminds them of the rhythms) In my opinion, this is also better flow in the writing of battles over previous books, very nice chapters this week, even if I do still want to know what's happening with the 'voidbringers.'
  2. Yeah, I think this one could be twisted any which way. To me though, future sight doesn't seem destructive since Preservation eventually won the long game with his superior future sight, and atium is so great because it makes you nearly untouchable (preserving your life.) On the other side, rewriting your spiritweb registers as against Preservation's Intent to me. It's default 'mode' is to make people a Mistborn, which is great for preserving life, but we know from WoB that it can make all kinds of other changes as well if you know what you're doing, and we know from SH that Preservation's Intent is against helpful changes as well. Edit: Until we get more info, I think this could go either way, based on how you see the Intents
  3. Have you finished the books? If not, read no further. In answer to your actual question, the Windrunners have access to the Surge of Adhesion (the full lashing), while Skybreakers have the Surge of Division, which we haven't seen yet. They share the Surge of Gravitation, which allows the basic lashing, thus why they can both fly and walk on walls.
  4. Edit: I was completely wrong about where this rank comes from Off to sacrifice some people now...
  5. Woohoo! I had so much fun last time, hopefully more people join this time around
  6. Feruchemy has always been the power that appealed the most to me. It may not be the most combat oriented (discounting compounding) but it's incredibly versatile, has countless everyday uses, doesn't rely on constantly obtaining more of an expendable resource, and it has plenty of experimentation opportunities which just makes the scholar in me happy. Plus, I'm a metalworker, so I could make some really awesome metalminds.
  7. I did some WoB hunting and I couldn't find a definitive answer for this, I believe that the powers of the God metals were chosen by the vessel though, for the simple reason that they don't seem like a natural outcropping of their Shard. Atium, for example, grants sight into the Spiritual Realm, and therefor future sight, but Preservation was better at future sight than Ruin was, because his Intent was to destroy. Lerasium is the same way, we know from WoB that it's actual effect is rewriting the spiritweb, and that seems directly contrary to the Intent of keeping everything the same. I think that Ruin and Preservation both chose a power for their god metal that goes against their Intent because it helped them minimize their natural weaknesses.
  8. This. A thousand times this.
  9. I like this idea. The only 'medallion' we've seen grant allomancy is the Bands.
  10. I think you've misunderstood this. The Parshmen aren't the ones that abandoned their gods, the Parshendi did. The Parshendi gave up their forms to somehow avoid what happened to the rest of the Parshmen, which implies that the humans only targeted those in voidbringer forms. Edit: Or that the forms of power themselves were responsible.
  11. These are all good points, and it's completely understandable that he is upset about it. I just hope that not too many of the Parshmen jump to these same conclusions... I don't think we know for sure, but I know many have theorized that Gavilar actually did want to return the Parshmen to normal, albiet for ulterior motives.
  12. This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but I'll go ahead and say it: I don't think Sah has the right to be as upset as he is at the Alethi. Obviously, I'm not saying that it was right to enslave them in the first place (however that was done), but we see several times throughout WoK and WoR that they couldn't have taken freedom even if it was offered. When talking about the first meeting with the Parshendi, Navani says that people have tried setting Parshman free in the wild, and they just stand there until someone else comes and gives them orders. Similarily, when Shallan speaks to the Parshmen on her way to the Shattered Plains, she notices that one of them looks uncomfortable when she asks him if he would rather be free. So, while I have felt uncomfortable about how the Parshmen are treated since the beginning, I think it's going to be extremely detrimental toward any peace efforts if very many of the newly freed Parshmen share Sah's attitue about humans, especially since it seems like they were genuinely incapable of living normally in slaveform, and the humans had no idea how to restore them if they wanted to. Edit: it just seems like a case of being mad at someone for something that happened before they were born, which is common enough in real life.
  13. Oddly enough, there are pigs on Roshar, on Threnody, on Sel, and on Yolen, but not one mention of bacon anywhere that I can remember, other than that WoB about Hoid loving bacon. There is a theory to be had here somewhere.
  14. Here's one of the WoB's that tells us that humans and listeners both predate the shattering. https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/3suo4l/oathbringer_i_think_flashback_dalinar_is_based/cx1nfdk They also have pigs on Roshar I really like this theory though, it's one of those that makes you go "How didn't I think of that?"
  15. If you haven't read Mistborn 3, you should probably avoid 'Mistborn: Secret History' and 'Allomancer Jak' until you have. Secret history deals quite a bit with the ending of the first Mistborn trilogy and allomacer Jak takes place during the second trilogy.
  16. There are audio book versions of everything published in the Cosmere except White Sand (since its a graphic novel) including Arcanum Unbounded. They're all the same narrator too, except for Elantris. Welcome, and thank you for your service!
  17. Not implying that Shallan can do it, but wouldn't the existence of pain fabrials mean that there is a way to dull pain without healing via Surgebinding? Unless the painrials are made with a voidspren, as I am coming to believe alerter fabrials must be...
  18. The only part of it (the drinking, there are other issues) I really saw as a warning was that she didn't wipe it away with stormlight the second time, she left still drunk and took the bottle of Horneater liquor with her. An interesting direction that I wouldn't mind reading would be for Shallan to convince herself that Veil has a drinking problem.... However, I agree that it isn't currently an issue, and I don't really think it ever will be, but I see the possibility.
  19. Maybe I'll keep track of everyone's drinking in my next reread, I admit I've never thought about it specifically too much before today. It just seems like Shallan often has a glass of wine in her hand . Honestly, it's probably just because it's involved in a couple of her more memorable scenes.
  20. I went back and checked, you're right, it was Adoulin in that scene, I was thinking Shallan gulped down her wine when she found out about the Highstorm, but the wine hadn't even arrived yet. I didn't say she drank the most, just more than most other characters. Elhokar is definitely worse than she is, and her father and one of her brothers (I think Jushu?) seem worse even than Elhokar from the little we see. I could be wrong, but I think Adoulin drinks mostly orange wine, which they say is basically juice, other than that time he mentions something about one glass of yellow before a duel (which I admit, I questioned that logic too) Edit: I don't really think she drinks too much though, just to be clear.
  21. I think that idea was always more of a joke than anything serious, because people are always pouring her wine, and then it's never mentioned again, or if it is mentioned, she gulps it down all at once (in the scene where she poisons her father, when she is studying in bed, and when her and Adoulin are at the Highstorm winehouse) It's probably coincidence, but I think its funny. I never really thought there was anything to it, and I was mostly joking above (edited my comment to reflect that), but I do think she drinks more than most, especially since our other viewpoint characters avoid it for various reasons (the Kholins have the codes of war, Kaladin doesn't like bars, ECT)
  22. I sincerely hope she doesn't either, Shallan and Pattern are my favorite characters. She does take that bottle of horneater white with with her though, and I can't imagine the ability to become sober on a whim would be good for your mentality about alcohol (Wayne has this a little bit too, I think) I've actually seen other people mention how much wine she drinks before, now that I think about it
  23. Personally, I am absolutely loving the sample releases! Both in terms of the content and the timing. I was mentally prepared to reread old Cosmere books over and over for months, so this is heaven. On the topic of these chapters specifically, I think these are my favorites so far from the samples. Did anyone else notice there are quite a few incorrectly hyphenated words? Honest formatting error, or obscure hidden message? Chapter specific thoughts I didn't see a lot of people talking about already below: Chapter 16: -The Stormfather tells Dalinar that Honorblades don't have the mind to scream on their own, and that Shardplate is related but different. Hmmm... I need to think about this one. -What is going to happen to the Honorblade in the pipe if Navani gets the sewage system working again? -I like Dalinar's new steampunk leather fabrial cuff. -Kadash's line "You were much, much better at the killing part", feels very ominous to me. -When I first read the Iriali (and others last week) negotiating with the Voidbringers, I was surprised, but after reading the Kaladin chapter I'm much more hesitant... Chapter 17 - What Listener form could this possibly be? Is it just dullform with the blocks removed or something new? -The confirmation that the yellow spren is a voidspren makes me very concerned about alerter fabrials. Chapter 18 - I'm happy that Shallan is finally making progress with sounds and Lightweaving without a drawing, but... -This chapter brought me down firmly on the side of Shallan's illusions being an unheathy coping mechanism that she needs to address. -Pattern is the only spren so far who seems to have come to grips with people using Shardblades, I wonder if there are others that will get used to the idea, or if Pattern is just more understanding. -Also, Pattern is the funniest part of these books, still. -A large market is already popping up in Urithiru, does this mean it's going to keep a large non-radiant population, even after the current disasters? -Finally! More information about Rosharan wine! Come on, I can't be the only one that really wanted to know. -"Sure, sure. With eyes like those?" I definitely feel like this is more than just a 'sad eyes at the bar' moment. I don't know what yet though. -the Ghostbloods don't strike me as the type that like having their name flashed around. -I feel like (mostly joking) Shallan might end up an alcoholic.
  24. Unfortunately, I think the use of hemalurgy kinda inherently violates the 'life before death' part of the first oath. Though I suppose there would be a loophile if the beaver was spiked against its will. As far as how many powers though? Well, from what we know, becoming an Elantrian is the hardest. Breaths can be given easily, and we could also stack the beaver up with a few honorblades for more surges. Aviar are just a world hop away, and it seems that anyone can learn to soulforge with enough practice and dedication (or compounded mental speed) At that point, the beaver is imortal (both due to aging and injury), it can world hop to wherever it wants, has shard-like power of all ten surges plus those of a fullborn, and probably wants to kill you for torturing it with spikes while it was still just a normal beaver. What could go wrong? Edit: I, for one, welcome the new beaver overlord.
  25. This was the only descriptive quote I could find: The other ones aren't specifically described, but it seems like nicrosil is on the inside for all of them. Edit: This is near the end of chapter 21 of Bands of Mourning by the way, I can't give an exact page number since I have the kindle version though.
