  1. "And why is that?"
  2. Talnic drew his sword, knuckles white on the hilt. "Orpheus, what is going on?" he asked, voice low.
  3. I just finished rereading The Book Thief. I am a mess. Storms, it's such an incredible, beautiful, heartbreaking book.

    Anyways.

If you haven't read it, you need to read it. With most books when I say this I'm half joking, but this is truly one of the most incredible books I've read. Just... Read it. And be prepared to cry. A lot.

I suppose you could phrase it that way :P

Honestly my favorite part was just the whole style of narration. I really liked the

And the perspective of the narrator.

      Hehe.

The point where he talks about how he held the souls of the Jews from the gas chambers like he usually only held the souls of children... That hit really hard.

The whole everything is just so gorgeous, honestly. It's so just... Real. Despite not being that way. I love it so much.

  4. I personally did not. There are... Quite a few issues with it, actually. One is that none of the people who helped out with it were on the spectrum themselves (or at least that information wasn't available to the general public before that time). Another is that this organization that they were raising money for has, in the past, partnered with this organization called Autism Speaks. There are a lot of issues with Autism Speaks. For one, they've been working to find a cure for autism. And all you need to do to see how they see autism is watch their commercials. There's this terrible one called "I Am Autism." It's just... Awful. I haven't done a ton of research into this, and can't remember many details off the top of my head, but there is a lot of information available. I do believe that Mark Rober was coming from a good place. But I think he ended up going about things in the wrong way. Also, I would say that autism is directly related to mental health. It's not a mental illness, but it does affect people's mental health directly. It has a lot of effects on people's ability to interact with others, and people with it are often prone to things like anxiety, depression, and OCD. Not to mention other things like sensory issues. If you'd like more information on this, I'd be happy to share some lectures I have found to be very informative. Sorry if that was rude in any way, or anything like that. This is just a subject that is very important to me due to the fact that it's very likely I'm on the spectrum myself (to be clear, I have not received a diagnosis, but have done a lot of personal research), and because it's so widely misunderstood. Well, everyone has mental health. It is really really cool how Brandon weaves mental illness into his characters. He's remarkably good at it. RoW had some of the best depictions of mental illness I have seen.
  5. "They left, actually," Talnic said. "I don't know where to, but if needed, I can point you in their direction." He was half hoping the girl would take him up on his offer just so the conversation could end.
  6. "As a matter of fact," Talnic said slowly, "I don't know." He turned to Gal. "Have you seen them anywhere?" @Trutharchivist
  7. Tlnic sighed. "It mentioned something about needing help. I can't remember the specifics. I was too busy trying not to die. However, Xeus and Minuet were there as well. They might remember more than me."
  8. In all honesty, I wouldn't call Newsies old timey. I think it was made in the early 1990s. I also watch silent films, so my perspective on this is a bit weird Three of my favorite musicals take place in Paris, and none of them have a traditionally happy ending. Except arguably PotO, but that depends on how you look at it.
  9. I made a short test so you could see how much you are like Kaladin.

Because I am putting off doing homework.

  10. I actually have quite a bit to say on this issue, from both the law enforcement perspective and from someone who knows quite a bit about mental illness, but I don't want to discuss it here for risk of the discussion becoming too political. If you would like to talk about this, though, feel free to PM me. It's both a very important issue and an interesting one.
  11. Thanks for the recommendations! I'll definitely look into them!
  12. I actually was able to see Wicked on Broadway a few years ago, and it's amazing. I hope you can see it at some point! I've never seen High School Musical, actually. I'm not a huge fan of romance (but really good characters make it tolerable), and just like dark stories in general, so I tend to stick with those. I guess my one exception to that is Newsies. The movie. Not the stage version. I have a thing against the stage version. But the movie is fantastic.
  13. Alright, I just checked. The random one that the kid gave me is a Baoer. And then the other one is a $15 dollar one from Hongdian that I just got off of Amazon. (For the price, it actually works really well.) I'm hoping one I actually start working I can get maybe a couple more that are a little better quality.
  14. When you get your entire family hooked on Skyward. Everyone from your brother who's in elementary school to your parents. (Both of my parents have also tried the Cosmere, but they didn't enjoy it too much.)
  15. Alright. I just got the mental health awareness month 2021 thread posted!

Also, this is the website I used to make my pfp, if anyone else wants to make one.

  16. Happy May, everyone! This last year has been... Crazy, to say the least. And yet here we are, going for another round of this! For those of you who aren't aware, May is mental health awareness month. This is my fourth year doing this, and over the past four years I have come a long way in terms on my own mental health. My depression has lessened significantly, with occasional days of it coming back in full force, my anxiety has worsened significantly especially as this school year is drawing to a close. My derealization has remained very consistent for the last four years, and I also am now fairly certain that I am on the autism spectrum. The knowledge of ASD that I've gained over the last few months has explained so much about me, that, well, being me is a much better thing to be than it has in times past. Beyond just my own personal experience with this, mental illness has greatly impacted every member of my family in various ways, and because of this I feel very passionately about this subject, and want to, in this small way, show support to people who have been affected by this. Alright, enough about me. To show support and awareness this month, I'd encourage everyone to turn their profile pictures green! The past few years it has always been amazing poking around the forums and seeing how many people are green. Also, please feel free to share your own experience with mental illness, or share your support for others in this thread. Have discussions, and know that you are not alone. Don't feel obligated to participate in this way if you don't want to or if it makes you uncomfortable. This is just an opportunity for people to share, and to have their voices be heard. And thanks to @Knight of Iron for reading over this for me before I posted it. If anyone wants a specific Cosmere symbol or something for their profile picture, just let me know and I can make a green one. There is also a green 17th Shard symbol floating around somewhere from previous years.
  17. How have I not seen this before??? At the end of the last school year, this random kid in my biology class gave me this fountain pen. I wrote with it a lot, but I still wrote with pencil more than with pen. Then this year, I have this one teacher who only lets us write with pen, and so I've started only using pens. And now I have two fountain pens and only use ballpoint pens if the paper is super absorbent. (Halfway through this school year my school switched to this paper that the ink I use with my fountain pens just bleeds through, and it's rather annoying.) I'd have to double check what pens I have, but I use Waterman ink. I also prefer converters over cartridges.
  18. There's probably already one of these somewhere, but, well, anyone want to talk about musicals? I feel like talking about musicals. I personally am a fan of some of the more random ones. My top three at the moment are Les Miserables, Hadestown, and this one production of Hunchback of Notre Dame. I also love Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton, Wicked, and Dear Evan Hansen. Depressing musicals are the best ones. Also apparently ones that take place in France. What musicals are you guys into? And just to be clear, I listen to musicals, I do not sing them or act in them. Unless I'm home alone, but we don't talk about that.
  19. I might as well post here. I'm fairly certain I'm ace, and am also somewhere on the aromantic spectrum. This could change (I won't go into why this is at the moment, but feel free to ask if you want), but at the moment, I feel this describes me pretty well. I'm also female but I refuse to adhere to traditional gender roles or anything like that. I like to say that I want to be seen as me first instead of my gender or anything like that. It's just not a big part of who I am, and I don't want it to dictate who I can be.
  20. Hey guys.

For the last three years I have posted a thing on May first, as May is mental health awareness month. For the month, a ton of people change their profile to something green for awareness, and in the thread for the month we talk about mental health and mental illness.

I'm just wondering what I should talk about in the first post this year. The first year I talked about a few different mental illnesses, and the past two I have just kind of said a few random things.

I'd like to actually talk about something this year, though.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  21. So, around this time of the year, Kaladin hatched. (Assuming he was six weeks old when I got him which is the usual age budgies are weaned.)

Kaladin is a year old you guys!!!

Here's him when I had only had him for a few weeks.

    He's such a big boy...

And, after putting off getting a second bird for a year, I am going to make the jump and actually do it soon. I'll probably end up doing it after the school year ends, so I can spend the summer bonding with it, and getting it comfortable, and so I don't have to worry about a baby budgie while stressing about my first AP test and getting some late work finished up.

    Happy hatchday Kaladin!!!

  24. Two things.

    One.

    Two.

It's been four years from today since I bought and started reading my first Brandon Sanderson book.

    That book changed my life.

I'll write more about that next month.

Anyways, it was a $10 copy of tWoK from a B&N in Salt Lake City. I still have it and the receipt. (Don't ask why I didn't mean to keep it and now I can't bring myself to throw it away.)

    Anyways.

Both of those things are things.

    Happy bread anniversary!

  25. Sighing, Talnic sheathed his sword. "I don't recognize it. But there are others around here that probably would."
