Harry Potter; The Controversy
ILuvHats replied to FantasyFanatic's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I have a love-hate relationship with Harry Potter. As in I used to love it, and now I... don’t exactly hate it, but it definitely seems more meh. I’ve always been the type of person to over read the heck out of series and it’s not uncommon for me to have read a series 4-5 times. In fact, I’ve been deliberately fasting from re reading cosmere books for about a year now. In the case of Harry Potter, I think I read it around 11 times. I don’t know, I lost track at some point. How could I have read it so many times you ask? Well when you’re 9 years old, you don’t really have anything to compare it to. So yeah, I spent 3-4 years re-reading the series every few months, until I quite literally got tired of it. And looking back, it quite clearly doesn’t stand up to the level of literature I’m now accustomed to. But it’ll still hold a special place in my heart for jump starting my love for fantasy. -
It's been revealed! Gosh dang it, now I just want to see the Whelan cover even more. Also, does anybody know who the woman is with the sword? She looks like she has grey hair, so maybe it's Navani. No idea why she'd be carrying a sword though.

No! Got ninja’d. Since all the letters are taken, here’s a few alternatives. V is for Vyre Z is for Zahel

There are a number of quotes from the Bible that specifically condemn homosexuality, but there are a lot of arguments that they are misinterpreted. Context and the ambiguity of translating from the original Greek and Hebrew into other languages makes it complicated, so some of the oft-quoted parts of scripture condemning homosexuality probably have more to say about the views of the translators than the original authors. And then you can take into account a lot of biblical quotes that implicitly support homosexuality. I'm not extremely familiar with the whole debate, but it's not as cut-and-dry as Christians with a traditional view on homosexuality like to say it is.

If we’re specifically talking about biblical scripture here, I’m just going to say it contains arguments for both sides, both for supporting and condemning heteronormative world views. It’s not very cut and dry on a lot of modern, controversial subjects; otherwise, the Christian community would much more homogeneous.

Is my magic system as good as I think it is?
ILuvHats replied to Ataraxian Wist's topic in Creator's Corner
Can't wards be negated if the wizard simply turns away from the wards and don't look at them? Even if the runes shine through opaque objects, there are ways to avoid looking at them. So unless the wards surround a wizard an all sides, I don't see how they can be very effective. -
Each Shard's Future Sight Skills and How to Overcome Them.
ILuvHats replied to Karger's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I really like your breakdown of shardic futuresight, Karger. It’s apparent that each shard’s intent influences their ability to access fortune, but I appreciate your emphasis on not ranking the shards. That being said, I think ranking has merits as well. To use your analogy of IQ, while it’s a very flawed general measurement scale, it’s assessment of specific abilities (which admittedly are only a few aspects of “intelligence”) are reasonably accurate. As long as we keep in mind the limitations, it can be useful. So looking at shards, I view their future sight abilities to be a bit like expanded Rock Paper Scissors. They each have different strengths and weaknesses and match up favorably against some shards and unfavorably against others. However, some probably have almost solely favorable matchups, such as cultivation. Ranking systems will always be rough attempts to fit pieces into pockets, but I personally enjoy ranking the shards abilities, and think there’s merit to it. But I’m not trying to criticize your post, and I really enjoyed the analysis you did. -
Thanks for all the recommendations. Way to many to get through quickly though . Just finished watching Madoka Magica, which was right up my alley. Psychological thrillers are always really interesting, and I've never seen one done in a world literally filled with lolis. Right now I'm going through Vinland Saga, which I've seen recommended elsewhere. Out of the animes listed in this topic, the ones that caught my eye are Boogiepop and Banana Fish. I've heard of the first one, and I just love the name. As for the second, any anime listed in the same sentence as Steins Gate seems like a safe bet in my book. I probably won't watch any of the series with 60, 70 plus episodes very soon. My attention span isn't the best, so I don't commit to longer series very often unless they're big ones like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
-
Just like many people, I've been stuck at home for weeks, and I'm looking forward to being stuck there for weeks more. So I'm wondering if anybody knows some anime I should check out. I've worked my way through most of my backlog, so I'm looking for recommendations. Here's a list of all the series I've already watched, so anything not on there is game.

Actually, there's a much easier for way for Hoid to get Odium's investiture. Instead of cutting a deal with Odium, he could cut a deal with Sja-anat to enlighten his spren. That should do the trick without having to interact with the guy who'd demolish an entire city just for a chance at killing him. Most true spren are a combination of Honor and Cultivation, so Hoid probably has Cultivation's investiture already.

I'm not sure what Karger is saying so I'll answer you as well. My impression was that Adien was never "cured" of autism. He had always had it since birth (as you do), and while his sanity was restored when the chasm line was added to the giant Aon, it had no effect on his condition. In fact, it's quite obvious that Adien's still an autistic savant since he was able to tell Raoden the precise number of steps to Teod's capital.

Help with valuing fire losses of Brandon works
ILuvHats replied to borborygmus's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Sounds like you’re going through some pretty terrible times right now. My best wishes for you and your partner going forward. I would probably follow Dreamer’s advice and email dragonsteel directly; they can help you a lot more than most sharders can. -
The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
ILuvHats replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
I just got news that all of my finals are officially optional/canceled due to the complications caused by the coronavirus, which is a HUGE relief. I mean, the epidemic is still horrible, but this is one consequence I don't mind. Also, if you're wondering why I have finals in the middle of spring, my school's on the quarter system, so the school year is broken up into 3 terms instead of 2 semesters. -
If You Had 3 Reality Altering Wishes, What Would You Do?
ILuvHats replied to a topic in General Discussion
1. Vaccine for the coronavirus. 2. Vaccine for the coronavirus. 3. Vaccine for the coronavirus. Eh, I’m not feeling creative today, and the outbreak’s on my mind since the first case on my college campus was confirmed yesterday. -
I feel very strongly that Brandon is going to make Ham a woman in the screenplay considering his past comments. It feels weird, but I guess it could work. I do think the personality would have to be substantially altered while still keeping the core aspects of Ham. I just don't feel like a copy-and-paste would feel natural.

Whether he’s technically a truthwatcher or not is a matter of semantics. I’d guess I’d call him the voidbinding version of a truthwatchers? Idk, I’ll leave it to in-world people to determine the terminology for what he is. Since the first oath is the same for every order, there are four unique ideals. I think two of the unique ideals will be the same as normal truthwatchers, and two will be different. This is based on the impression that voidbinding is half a reflection of surgebinding and half an inversion. After all, one of Renarin’s surges appears to function the same as normal truthwatchers while the other functions completely differently. Yes, he may be able to use lightweaving like Truthwatchers can, but we haven’t seen it on screen, so my belief is that his future visions have replaced normal lightweaving abilities. Also, one side of the symbols on the voidbinding chart is oriented the same as the corresponding surgebinding symbol while the other side is flipped upside down. So to me, voidbinding seems very half and half. Half the same, half different.

How is 3 important on Sel? I can think of 3 empires on different continents, but that’s it. What other examples of 3 are you thinking of?

Karger seems to tired and/or time constrained to give a detailed description of the alcubierre drive, so I’ll give it a shot. As he basically said, the idea is that the craft isn’t moving through space. Instead, space is moving and carrying the spacecraft along with it. This bypasses the limitations of light speed since there appear to be no limits to the rate at which space can expand or contract. Not sure how much of this is familiar to you from Star Trek. I’ve seen the recent movies, but I don’t remember them talking about this. What’s more relevant is how the metallic arts can achieve such technology. The idea is that bendalloy and cadmium would be used to affect space instead of time. Space and time are a continuum, so since the metals can affect one, they must be able to affect the other as well. This means bendalloy could be used to contract space in front of the craft while cadmium expands space behind the craft. IMO this seems pretty different from your idea, which focuses on the time dilatory effects of the metals instead of their effects on space.

I've never played FF, but I basically imagined them how Quantus said. Proportionally, the blades were much wider than normal swords, and the coloring had a special sheen. Shardplate was basically like power suits. Very bulky, and clearly impossible to move in if they didn't enhance one's strength.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be picture of Shadesmar. The circle is the small, cold sun, and all the "clouds" are running parallel to each other and towards it. Here's a relevant quote from Jasnah's POV in the prologue of WoR. The lack of beads is probably just a sizing issue. The image is too small for the detail to show them.

True, but Sja-anat's ability to corrupt not only sub spren but also True Spren seems be quite the recent development, so knowledge from the pre-desolation era doesn't mean he's as up to date as the POV radiants. I wouldn't put it past Hoid to already be aware of this, but neither would I assume he knows it either. I'd give it a 50-50 chance. My reasoning's that he's already on Roshar. Yep, that's pretty much it. I thought I had more when I started writing this, but nope. There shouldn't be anything preventing Hoid from leaving Roshar and coming back later to pick up Odium's investiture. Unless corrupting his Cryptic messes with the process of getting the spren off world, so that he has to relearn how to get off-world. But I can't think of any reason that would be case.
