Could an Uber powerful Smoker hide/protect from a Shard?
alder24 replied to JustQuestin2004's question in Cosmere Q&A
Trellium spike, that will work too, but you not only expose yourself to Autonomy, but Harmony can still see you from time to time. SoS ch 7: Encase a Shard in aluminum?? I think you meant encasing yourself in aluminum. Sure, but that's rusty expensive and you are walking around in aluminum armor - that's basically an arrow pointing at you all the time. Not practical. -
Ruin isn't a Shard of evil, Hemalurgy intrinsically isn't evil, but it is dangerous. Sure, what you proposed it's one of the most moral and practical ways to use Hemalurgy, but what about recipients? Every spike you take cracks your soul, it hurts you, it damages you, inching your mentality ever closer to insanity. Hemalurgy isn't dangerous to others, it's dangerous to you as well. Hemalurgy always hurts. What do you value more: your mental health, or fancy powers covered in blood? Yup, here is WoB on this:

Could an Uber powerful Smoker hide/protect from a Shard?
alder24 replied to JustQuestin2004's question in Cosmere Q&A
That will for sure work! Now that I think of it, the big cloud of blindness isn't going to be that big of a problem. Sure, a Shard is almost omnipresent, they can be in multiple places at once, see much of the world at once - but they still need to focus their attention to find you and they are limited in that. If they don't know where to find you, they will miss this big cloud of copper because they aren't focused on that spot - unless something other in your proximity pings their attention. Just like Ruin when was oblivious to Kandra and Atium because it was in his blind spot full of metal. There are simply too many blind spots to search them all and they would still need a person to look through their eyes (like Ruin sending inquisitors to check storage cache for him, or with Kandra and Atium). -
Sure, finding the cheapest material to optimize the cost is fine. But corpses will probably take your Breaths forever - I was just pointing that out. I don't agree that a placement of scars and visual stuff like that which make an object look closer to the Awakener matter at all. In my opinion it's all about making it as close as possible to looking like a person, but without those details, not a specific person. Vasher used 25 Breaths to both Awaken his cloak, which had the same scars placement and eye holes as in his body, and to Awaken a straw figure, which has none of those features. What mattered is that both of them had a human shape and a hair for a focus. But that's just my opinion.

All would have, they just have to convince spren to bond with them. Marsh has a bigger problem - he has more cracks in his spirit web, but those are filled with a different type of investiture, spren will not want to touch that - this will drive spren away. Being insane, having a cracked soul isn't required to bond a spren, it helps, but all you need is to convince a spren to bond you. All great people from Mistborn already exhibit traits that would attract spren. Vin would be a great Windrunner, Elend would be a great Bondsmith, Sazed would be a great Edgedancer ("I will remember"), Wax would be great as a Skybreaker. Many would fit multiple orders, like Kelsier. If you realistically ask who from Scadrial would have the biggest chances of becoming a Radiant, well then most of them are dead already. Felt would have the biggest chances - he's already on Roshar, running around Radiants and their spren, but I doubt you meant background characters

Could an Uber powerful Smoker hide/protect from a Shard?
alder24 replied to JustQuestin2004's question in Cosmere Q&A
Won't work. Each spike creates a crack in the spirit web, it makes investiture get into it easier. Vin with her spike was more vulnerable to Rashek's Soothing than others. Benefits of increased A-copper strength will cancel out your increased susceptibility gained from cracks, so you might end up with more or less the same situation as with just a normal Coppercloud and no spikes. -
Yeah, only certain metals interact with investiture - it's because metals in Cosmere have a Spiritual component. Those metals are base metals like steel, iron, pewter, tin, brass, zinc, aluminum etc. titanium and lithium aren't on the list. Plus iirc lithium reacts violently with water and air, you don't want to use it in fabrials at all. Electricity won't power spren and fabrials, it's not investiture. They need Stormlight to function. But those metals are in the Stormlight Archive, all metals from our periodic table are in Cosmere, they are just undiscovered yet.

What order did you get on the radiant quiz

Here is the most recent topic for this, with a poll: -
It's better to start a new topic, unless there is a really fresh one out there (I don't think so). But if you have your own theory about that just start a new topic.

I don't think you can take a corpse and make it a type 3 entity - it's not just about how close they resemble life, but also how close they were to being alive. A corpse was very close, too close to life and Breaths will just cling to it. Warbreaker ch 47:

Possible Feruchemical usage of Nicrosil
alder24 replied to The Sneaky Kandra's topic in Cosmere Discussion
And I will add a thing or two to this. Lerasium rewrites your spirit web, it Connects you to Preservation, which makes you an Allomancer. Burning it again would make you stronger. But there might be some other effects of Lerasium if someone were to know what to do. The other things that can be done with Lerasium are likely referring to alloys of Lerasium - alloying Lerasium with Atium might rewrite your spirit web with the power of Ruin, alloying it with Bavadinium will rewrite your spirit web with the power of Autonomy, making you a Sand Master. It seems like the main effect of Lerasium is just rewriting your spirit web, but it depends on the composition of the metal. -
Yes, but they would need to store and organize their memories somewhere else like Hoid is doing. And avoid torture. Both weren't really possible as their main purpose was to be tortured for eternity. They weren't meant to suffer from those issues, they were meant to last on Braize forever, trapping Fused. They had broken their Oath to Honor and let Fused back on Roshar, which is something Honor didn't predict (so why do you think he had to predict they will get insane). Then they broke their word again during Aharietiam, when their mental state was already showing signs of degradation, but wasn't as bad as it is now. They have been alive for 7000 years, 4500 years was away from Honor, after breaking the Oathpact, 2500 years was while fulfilling their Oath, being trapped and tortured on Braize. No matter if Honor was aware or not, this was not meant to happen at all, they weren't meant to break, they weren't meant to cause another Desolation, they weren't meant to abandon the Oathpact. I doubt they would even be able to use Breaths like Hoid does on Braize - I believe they didn't have bodies there, only their Cognitive forms. That means they can't use invested powers, they can't use Breaths, they can't store memories - not to mention Fused would not allow them to do that as a part of their torture. There was no solution. OB ch 38: Not possible. She wasn't trapped back then at Aharietiam, and they were already losing the track of time. It was simply their nature of CS and PTSD accumulated from two and a half millenia of torture. The Oathpact did the transporting - Taln returned fine in WoK despite BAM being trapped. WoK Prelude: Yeah, I don't see it working like that. Spren have no problem transferring back and forth between CR and PR - only breaking their bond with a Radiant is problematic. Breaking the bond rips something from their souls - it's likely that it rips more than just a bond from a spren and combining that with a wound from BAM imprisonment it's too much for a spren. It is possible that the reasons no deadeye were made before Recreance was because a Bondsmith was always there to break their bond. There also are ways to safely break a bond before the 5th Ideal, those could have been used too. And apparently what Shallan did with the Testament could have happened in the past. Ultimately we don't have enough information. OB ch 108: That's part of their magical madness. It's all in the soul, a human soul is not made to last that long. That and layers of PTSD makes them insane. That's all part of their magical madness. Fused suffer in the same way, for the same reasons (but instead of torture they died much more often than Heralds). Brandon is differentiating Heralds mental state from real life mental issues like depression, PTSD or DID that other characters from SA suffer from. Heralds and all other CS suffer from the same issue - they aren't meant to live for that long. It's not about BAM, it's specifically about their longevity. No, that's not what was happening. They didn't use anything like this, Hoid made them aware they could do that, RoW ch 84 epigraphs:

I argue this is about kinetic/static investiture, not innate investiture. The question was "So are actively Surgebinding Radiants or metal-burning Allomancers just not Invested enough to gain those passive effects" - he was asking about kinetic investiture, not innate. Mistborn does not get that much investiture compared to Stormlight, but both Mistborn and Radiant are similarly invested with their innate investiture (as per the last WoB about Jasnah). I agree. Yes, I agree. I don't remember this WoB. Learsium Connects you and rewrites your spirit web, which normally results in becoming an Allomancer. I disagree. Spirit web and innate investiture are not the same. Spirit web is made out of raw investiture, Connections and Identity, but innate investiture is something more added to the spirit web. Drabs have no innate investiture, but their spirit web is still there and it's worth something. TSM spoilers: Close. Investiture is seeping into the ground from Endowment's perpendicularity, allowing flowers and the whole jungle to grow there.

If you have plate armor, just make normal Lifeless - they are as invulnerable as it gets in plate armor. Give them cloaks with the Command "protect them" and they are even better. Expensive in gold, cheap in Breaths. Vasher's cloth were already very human like, sure you can add hairs for a focus, but it would still be very expensive because Commands are really complicated. I'm not really sure how it would work. At this point just make a few Kalad's Phantoms, they are still better and as expensive as you propose.
-
No, he had almost a full amount of Breaths from Vivenna at that time. Around 600 Breaths. No, she recovered Breaths from Tonk Fah's cloak AFTER she gave Breaths to Vasher - that's why Vasher fell out of a window, she used those Breaths to Awaken the cloak again. I would also subtract Breaths required for Awakening 2 ropes she threw just a moment ago - she didn't recover them. ch 56: You can Awaken clothes with the "become my arms/legs" Command, but also Awaken ropes with that Command as well - just like Vasher did when falling. You would have double the amount of strength, much better power armor - if they can work together, but I guess that is just a matter of practice. But that won't stop attacks like a Shardplate does, even with a cloak Awaken to "protect you." Oh, but I see now. You don't want to have a good Shardplate, you want minions that will fight for you. I guess it would be fairly cheap - it depends if clothes would be able to move in heavy armor, or if they would require additional Breaths to compensate for their lack of strength - like with Kalad’s Phantoms. Truthfully, just Awaken a few Kalad Phantoms, you can reclaim some Breaths if needed and they are almost invincible - you can cut them like a fabric. Oh, so you want a suit. Well that's not that cheap. Those three Commands protected me, became my fingers/legs, took most of Vivenna 600 Breaths (quoted by @Treamayne), so much that she had to remove her Breaths from her trousers and cloak to Awaken a pair of ropes. ch 56: Maybe wearing a onesie would be better - one thing in the shape of a full person, give it a hair and it's even cheaper, but you have to combine two separate Commands into one, which would be harder (something like "give me strength and move as I must"). Still quite expensive, those are very complicated Commands. You won't get it as cheap as Vasher's 25 Breaths for "protect me."

You both have a point - a Divine Breath with agelessness - Lerasium doesn't make you ageless after all. But those are just numbers for an example, in annotations. I think Snapping doesn't just awaken the Preservation's fragment, but through establishing Connection to Preservation it invests you more - it fills cracks in your soul. I fully expect Mistborn to be invested with hundreds of Breath equivalent units of investiture. Consider Kelsier in SH - he lasted for minutes before fading while many souls fade within seconds. This suggests he was hundreds of times more invested than a normal Scadrian (assuming lasting before fading grows proportionally with your investment level). Elend as Lerasium Mistborn was several times more powerful than Kelsier, I would argue he would be even more invested. I like to imagine a Misting would be invested with 1/16 the amount of investiture Mistborn is invested. Assuming a Kelsier Mistborn is equal to 200 Breaths, a Misting would be ~12 and a Lerasium Mistborn would be something like 600-1000 (a Lerasium Misting would be like 30-70). So a single Edglium bead can make you halfway to the full Divine Breath. But ultimately this is just a guessing game. We don't know how much they are invested, how they compare to others. I really wish Brandon would tell us in numbers how invested are Mistborn, Radiants and others, even a rough estimate would be helpful. I think the investing part is only unique to Lerasium (for now) - Atium doesn't invest you, it just gives you kinetic investiture used to see the future and you need to burn Lerasium alloyed with Bavadinium to become a Sand Master, which actually invests you. At first Brandon said that Lersium making you into a Mistborn is a side effect and Mistborn burning it would do something else, but later he said that Mistborn burning it would become just a stronger Mistborn - which in my opinion is the same effect. So I'm not really sure that Allomancy is just a side effect and not the main effect of Lerasium. But Lerasium does grant some other powers, so maybe a specific intent is required to get them out instead of Allomancy?
-
No they don't. I should have written that everybody has the potential to become an Awakener. While everybody has some investiture in them (innate investiture, Breaths are innate investiture that can be shared, others have innate investiture that can't be shared, e.g. Preservation's fragment in Scadrians), only Nalthians have Breaths, but you don't need to be a Nalthian to buy some Breaths and Awaken with them. That's the point, you need to get some Breaths and you can Awaken - you don't need any Connection, any DNA, or any Nahel Bond, just investiture and you can be an Awakener, if you know what to do. I think only Hemalurgy works like that too. It's the knowledge that makes you an Awakener. You can even use other types of investiture and Awaken as well - Awakening in Cosmere is granting some level of sentience/sapience to non-living objects with a Command and investiture (any kind). You can Awaken with something like Stormlight (but we don't know how yet) and you shouldn't need to have any Breaths to do that. WoBs containing Cosmere spoilers:
-
Everybody has the potential to become an Awakener in Cosmere - they just need Breaths to Awaken. Awakening isn't restricted by bloodline, or by bond, or by your spirit web - you just need a proper type of investiture and knowledge to do it. I think you're right that Edglium (unofficial name of Endowment's god metal) is similar to Lerasium and is burnable by anyone (I believe other god metals are burnable only by all Allomancers). It's hard to say what it would do. I'm guessing it would bestow you with a Divine Breath, without making you into Returned/Cognitive Shadow. That also means you don't have to spend Breaths to feed it every week, because you are alive, unlike Returned. It would be neat to have the 5th Heightening, possible ability to change appearances and a possibility to heal someone - but you still can’t Awaken with Divine Breath, you can’t give it to someone else. It would also be a great manifestation of Endowmnet's Intent - Edglium is a gift, the only way someone can get a Divine Breath without dying first.

Were Ruin and Preservation friends?
alder24 replied to KaladinSTORMINstormblessed's question in Cosmere Q&A
Yes, that's a bit tragic but the same happened to Leras. Their minds both gave up before the will of their Shards, they were changed and molded by them. We don't know what their relations were before they became Shards, but I think it's likely they were at least friends. Ati used to be a kind person, they decided to settle together and create the entire planet by combining their powers. I wouldn't settle and create the entire planet with a person that I don't like, the chances of them being friends are quite big. But unfortunately we don't know more than that, we have to wait for the Dragonsteel to explore it. WoK letter: But Ati said "Vax," not Leras - Vax is most likely a place somewhere in Cosmere. SH ch 6-9: -
This is the wrong section for this kind of topic - I'll ask mods to move it to the Stormlight Archive subforum. If you have doubts, just read descriptions of each subforums, it will tell you their purpose and what is allowed to discuss there and what isn't. Regarding the poll, my vote goes to Bondsmiths. They can open a perpendicularity, mess with spirit webs, steal powers and bonds from other people and even bind Shard like Ishar did with the Oathpact. Bondsmith unchained is one of the most dangerous powers in Cosmere.
-
Yeah, Larkins should be able, they are quite sapient, Chiri-Chiri proves this. Tai-na are sapient too. They should be able to bond a Radiant spren on top of their existing bond with Luckspren (for Larkins), but the True Spren must be willing to share a bond, which shouldn't be that big of a problem with a non-sapient spren.

The Grand Theory for Wind and Truth: The final battle Predictions
alder24 replied to Honors_Gun's topic in Stormlight Archive
Keep in mind, if Odium were to be trusted, that was Tanavast's interpretation of Honor. A Vessel can interpret Shard's intent differently or even change it. Shardic intent is filtered through Vessel's perception. Honor held by someone like Kaladin or Dalinar would be interpreted differently and can include the meaning and value of bonds. -
True, my bad. I think it might help, but a Kandra would have to practice with those kinds of corpses to get used to their unique characteristics. Someone like TenSoon would be able to create a general human form while adding details preserved from the mummy, making a good copy of that mummified person.
-
Yeah, Starspren are unlikely to be Tai-na spren. It seems that their spren are somewhat sapient. I don't think they are Radiant spren, but some other type of near-sapient great spren. Also Rysn knows Luckspren, from her fall from Tai-na. It's possible they are bonded to some other special species of Luckspren. Dawnshard ch 16: Or maybe they are the same type of Luckspren. There are many corpses of greatshells scattered around the coast of Aimia, it might be a part of Tai-na lifecycle to visit Akinah and bond with a special Luckspren, just like other, smaller greatshell come there to die. Tai-na, just like Larkins, are sapient, just like them they require a special amount of assistance because of their enormous size - it would make sense for them both to bond the same spren. Plus it was Tai-na who took care of Larkins after the Scouring of Aima and they can even command them, as evident with Chiri-Chiri. Larkins are also called cousins of Tai-na. There is a connection between Aimia, Larkins and Tai-na. Dawnshard ch 1:
