6 | 3 | 1 - What do we think this secret project will be?
alder24 replied to CtrlAltDepressed's topic in Cosmere Discussion
But the narrator was, in all three SP The same can be done with a new story about dragons and Aethers. I really see no difference. It's not important to their story so don't mention it. No, they don't. Why would they mention it, if it's not relevant to their story? Sure, they will know, but it doesn't matter in their story. Did Xisis start ranting about Odium in Tress? TSM spoilers: No, if the story is about preventing bankruptcy, or developing some new but dangerous product, or a rival dragon trying to do a hostile takeover. Not every story has to have stakes affecting the entire Cosmere. High connectivity doesn't mean everything has to be known, it means we will see multiple invested art, people from different worlds, names will be mentioned - all connecting to present books. But they don't have to know (or reveal) if Dalinar won the contest to use a fabrial from Roshar. TLM was highly connected and it didn't spoil the ending of KoWT. All of this simply doesn't matter to the story - Brandon decides what the story is about. -
I meant that it's possible that on some planet it could provide some invested art, but we don't know the specifics. Shattering would affect that invested art, but we don't know how. Breaths aren't of Adonalsium, they never were, they are of Endowment and people on Nalthis were most likely created by Endowment after the Shattering. There is a type of Lightweaving from Yolen, you've seen Hoid using it telling his stories in WoK an WoR but we don't know how one can obtain it nor if it predates the Shattering. No, that's a separate thing, Herald IS a Cognitive Shadow. Innate investiture is a part of people's soul. Active/Kinetic investiture is something that is used - Allomantic bronze detect that, people burning metals are using kinetic investiture, Radiants using Stormlight for Surges too, Feruchemists tapping metalminds as well. That's kinetic investiture, investiture that is used as energy. Heralds should have no problems with burning Lerasium, Lerasium can be burnt by anyone. Innate investiture is a part of your soul, static investiture is for example Stormlight being held by Radiant in his body, kinetic investiture is using that Stormlight for Surges or healing. Kinetic investiture is investiture that is doing some work, static investiture is investiture that does nothing now, but can work work, innate investiture is investiture that is just in your soul - like Preservation's fragment. Herald would have a lot of innate investiture, Herald's soul is made out of investiture, but that investiture is in their soul, it's not static, or kinetic. Heralds need Stormlight to power their Surgebinding. Your spirit web is also keyed, and investiture you used has the same key as your spirit web. It's most visible with Breaths - when you have Breaths they are keyed to you, when you Awaken something, those Breaths are still keyed to you and only you can recover those Breaths. No one else can recover them because they have different identities, they can't Command Breaths that are keyed to you. A Rosharan doesn't have to do anything with his spirit web - once he burns Lerasium, which is something anyone can do, he can burn metals and gain Preservation's investiture. We don't know how to mix investiture with different abilities - like how to use Stormlight to power Allomancy. It's possible, but you need to do something. We don't know yet what it is. We know things like this are happening already - Lift is using Lifelight to power her Radiant powers, Venli can use both Voidlight and Stormlight to do that. This might suggest that you need to have a strong Connection to both Shard or something like that - in that case being both Radiant and an Allomancer would be enough to use Stormlight to power Allomancy. But that's speculative. We've seen in TLM that pure, unkeyed Dor can power Allomancy and that might mean that if you fully unkey investiture (maybe even from its Shard), you can use it to power all abilities. But you can have both of those powers with no complication, if you find a way to obtain them. Nothing in your spirit web would stop you from being both a Mistborn and a Radiant at the same time and using those powers at the same time.

alder24 replied to CtrlAltDepressed's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I really don't see your point with Aethers and dragons. Because dragons are cool, they own corporations, they have palaces in Silverlight, one of them Ascended, they are worshiped all across Cosmere, they are scientists (Xisis), they were already relevant in the space era of Cosmere (Xisis) so why can't they be more relevant in the same time period as Tress? Aethers are also really relevant to the future of Cosmere, from TLM we know Aethers are in need and are searching allies to fight the dark Aether - something that will happen in the future of Cosmere. By this logic Brandon should not write anything in the future because that risks spoiling present books. Yumi, Tress, Sunlit, SotD, or even TLN should not have been written because they contain spoilers to SA 5/10 and Mistborn Era 3/4. But they were written, they don't spoil books, they tease them with little facts that tell us nothing about how SA/Mistborn will progress. He can include dragons and Aethers in his story and don't spoil us present Cosmere - just like he did in Tress. Brandon wants to simply explore the future of Cosmere right now, without waiting 30 years for other series to catch up. He can clearly do it without spoiling anything important - as proven by all books set in the future and 3 Secret Projects he just wrote. High connectivity doesn't mean lots of spoilers for current books. Disagree on both points. Because dragons running a corporation and using futuristic magic-tech is more interesting than dragons with swords. It's harder to write about a world overrun by crabs and about people with mental health problems, but that just makes a far better story - that's the reason to write it. -

There is some art on Canticle. The Cinder King's ship is ornamented for example. TSM ch 15: -
I've addressed those points in there. He could pierce a Coppercloud if he were to focus, Vin's Coppercloud was pierced (unlike Kel or Club's Copperclouds) because Vin is spiked and her Spirit Web is cracked, allowing emotional Allomancy to sneak into her soul easier. Strong push means not a normal Mistborn level Steelpush. A greater power is needed - Lerasium level or Rashek level. But just because they would do it with dualumin doesn't mean they will slam that Shardplate into the ground like a wrecking ball - the strength of that push on that Shardplate would be far smaller than what you would expect from duralumin push. It's too invested, it still resists. The same would go with emotional Allomancy, if it was possible to pierce a Shardplate with duralumin - it wouldn't feel paralyzing like Vin's smoothing Straff, or what we've seen in TLM, it would feel just like normal emotional Allomancy, but lasting only a single second. Not really useful when it achieves nothing, just a waste of metal. Rashek can do much better by tapping speed and strength, slamming his fist into the Shardplate's helmet and THEN using duralumin powered emotional Allomancy, paralyzing Radiant with their head exposed.
-
Generally speaking there is. Innate investiture makes people more healthy, more resilient to illnesses, and have a better mental health - everything that a Drab suffers from is improved with Innate investiture. Innate investiture manifests a bit differently on various planets - on Nalthis that's Breaths which allow Awakening, on Scadrial that's something that is a seed for Allomancy/Feruchemy. But on both Scadrial and Nalthis population is post-Shattering, those people weren't there when Adonalsium was Shattered, Scadrial didn't even exist. Investiture resist investiture means something a bit different. The more something is invested, the more it resists kinetic investiture primarily - for example a Shardplate can't be Lashed or Steelpushed because it's so invested. Kinetic investiture is active investiture, investiture that is doing something, that is being used like Lashing, like Steelpush, or some Soulcasting and stuff like that. Investiture resist investiture also where there is identity mismatch. But being highly invested doesn't prevent you from getting more invested abilities - a Cognitive Shadow like Herald can bond with a spren, Hoid can burn a Lerasium bead etc. Those things modify your Spirit Web directly, Connect you to things. Being a Radiant means having a Connection to a True Spren, being an Allomancer means having a Connection to Preservation and stuff like that. This is not resisted as far as we know, it doesn't change your Spirit Web, it adds something new to it - invests you more. Nope, you can hold Stormlight in your body and burn metals at the same time. Both investitures would be keyed to you specifically, there should be no conflict. You can potentially fuel Allomancy with Stormlight directly, but some other steps might be needed before that would be possible (we don't know yet). You've even seen examples like that in Mistborn series - Vin had her Hemalurgic spike giving her extra A-bronze and had no disruptions in burning other metals. Returned can feed on Stormlight instead of Breaths for another example. You can even Awaken with Stormlight but some conversions might be needed first too. And that would be the only conflict there is - you probably have to do something extra to fuel one magic system with a different type of investiture, like you have to first do something to Stormlight to use it for Allomancy, but you can have both and use both at the same time.

Before the Shattering people had innate investiture of Adonalsium, after the Shattering this was associated with some of the 16 Shards - so they no longer have this "pure" Adonalsium piece in them, it's of Shards now. This works for Hoid too and everybody who lived through the Shattering and had Adonalsium's innate investiture. Not at all. Hoid can use different magic systems, because technically anybody can if they know how to do that. Anybody can burn Lerasium and become a Mistborn. Anybody can receive some Breaths and become an Awakener. Anybody can convince spren to bond with them and become a Radiant. You can even alloy Lerasium with Bavadinium to become a Sand Master. These powers are not mutually exclusive, you just have to put in a lot of work to get them all. Those powers are not always bound to the system. Allomancy can be used anywhere, it draws directly from SP where distance doesn't matter. Awakening can be used anywhere because you have Breaths that can be carried anywhere. There is a problem with Surgebinding, you have a hard time bringing a spren out of Roshar, they are tied to the system just like Heralds are to it and can't leave - it's really hard to find a solution to this but there are some methods. That's probably the most restrictive power in terms of "using it outside its native planetary system." Before the Shattering all investiture was the same - that's what it sounds from WoBs. After it wasn't. Some could have been associated with 1/16 of every Shard equally, others could have been mostly associated with only one Shard - like Spren got mostly assigned to Cultivation. It probably depends on specific people and where in Cosmere they were. Basically, Shard represents unique fundamental forces that all were aspects of Adonalsium. Before the Shattering some people were edging more towards one of those forces than others, so after the Shattering they were mostly associated with the corresponding Shard. For example Spren were very close to the growth aspect of Adonalsium, which became Cultivation after the Shattering, so they became of Cultivation.
-
The term for this piece of investiture is innate investiture, the people are invested. It's a good question. Because Adonalsium's investiture was everywhere in Cosmere, people would have innate investiture everywhere. In places where Adonalsium was more "present" (more invested) they would be more invested, in other minor worlds they would be less - on worlds like Roshar or Yolen they would probably have more than on other worlds. A WoB said that everyone in Cosmere is invested, another said that all investiture was associated with Shards during the Shattering, even in places where Shards haven't visited they are invested slightly - that means for me before the Shattering people were also invested. That piece would not be "Shattered." The Shattering means that Adonalsium was killed and his investiture was associated with 16 Shards that were created. So whatever existed before the Shattering was associated with new Shards but they weren't Shattered - like Spren on Roshar were made by Adonalsium, but post his death they were associated with mostly Cultivation (technically they were already associated with specific parts of Adonalsium personality). This investiture didn't go anywhere, it stayed with them.
-
No, because that's a different kind of investiture. The word investiture has several meanings in Cosmere: one is raw power like Dor, other is manifestation of investiture, invested arts, abilities like Allomancy. There are 3 types of investiture: static, kinetic and innate. Static is Dor/Stormlight and the content of metalminds - investiture that is not used by can be used. Kinetic is investiture that is being used - that's what A-bronze detects. Innate is part of your soul - that's Breaths, that's Preservation's fragment, that's stuff that gives you powers but isn't a fuel. F-nicrosil stores only innate investiture, your abilities to use investiture, not investiture itself. As we currently understand it, you can't use it to power your Allomancy, F-nicrosil stores Allomancy itself. That's how medallions work - they store Feruchemical abilities, not raw investiture. Marasi had Bands of Mourning, she tapped "everything" and she had to steal vials of metal to use Allomancy. That's because the Bands gave her abilities but no fuel. I've answered it mostly in the previous post. It's most likely this is about F-nicrosil compounding. He stored his Allomancy, then tapped it to get stronger, just like you do with F-steel and storing speed. But the F-nicrosil mechanism is not fully confirmed yet, we don't know how it works in detail. Savantism makes you do more with less - look at Spook in HoA, he was able to sense the air being pushed by a blade, his eyes were so sensitive that he had to wear a blindfold and he still was able to see, his touch could sense minor differences in smoothness ets. Savantism is a big power increase. WoB (note, Wax is no longer a Savant): We don't know from where Lerasium came from, it's likely some previous Ascendant used the power of the Well to create them, we don't know what were Preservation's intentions with Lerasium. We know the more Lerasium you burn, the stronger Mistborn you become - the size of the bead determines how strong you will be. I would expect the upper limit to be how much power is your soul able to withstand being transferred from SR, not on Lerasium itself. Rashek had access to the power of the Well, the power that was able to move planet, raise mountains, shift the crust - that's much more raw investiture than what's in Lerasium bead, that's much bigger potential for Connecting you to Preservation than what's in a small bead - even if he made himself a Mistborn with the last drops of the power. He pushed his soul to the very limits. Or maybe the upper limit is what we've seen with Vin when she was Ascending? What is "pure innate investiture?" Purified Dor is unkeyed Dor (which is static investiture), pure innate investiture would be also unkeyed - that's medallions for you. They still grant only specific powers. F-nicrosil - for all we know - doesn't fuel your Allomancy/Feruchemy, it stores them directly, but you still need to burn metals or store attributes to use those powers. In my opinion F-nicrosil stores ability just like most other Feruchemical metals, like F-steel stores speed. You store 50% strength of your Allomancy for an hour, you became a weaker Allomancer for an hour, but then you can tap to be stronger Allomancer for an hour or tap with diminishing returns to do a steel push on the level of duralumin without duralumin - for example. That's because if you're storing your Allomantic strength directly, you can become like a Lerasium Mistborn or like Rashek for a short time. But you still have to burn metals to conduct investiture from SR, F-nicrosil just makes this conduct wider or narrower. But again I have to note, this is not something we have confirmed in books, we know F-nicrosil stores innate investiture, your abilities, not the power directly, we know it is different for Feruchemist than it is for medallions (in medallions it works like F-copper). In my opinion this makes the most sense and provides the best opportunities.
-
That's not that kind of investiture, nicrosil is storing Innate investiture, a part of your soul that gives you power, not investiture that fuels it like Stormlight. As said in the WoB provided by Trusk'our, he made himself as powerful as possible by using the power of the Well. Plus he was a Savant of every metal - that's more power. It's possible he used nicrosil to strengthen his Allomantic power (if it works like other attributes, you store 50% of your Allomantic power for an hour, you can tap it to be 150% strong for an hour, or less with diminishing returns. But keep in mind nicrosil was not available in TFE, it's unlikely he had it unless he created it with the power of the Well, or had some leftovers from before the Empire was created (both option set up a limit of how much metal he could have used fro compounding). Funniest thing, searching for nicrosil in google pops mostly Mistborn sources, but I've found one saying it was first developed in the 1960s. That means nicrosil would be also unavailable before Rashek's Ascension, so the only way for him to have it is to create it via the Well in advance, which is possible.
-
In the WoK Prime Honorblade had this ability, but in the current, canon version this is not possible anymore.
-
And a regular Coppercloud of Kelsier or Club was enough to stop it. They didn't feel it, Vin did only because she had a spike. Sure if he wanted to he could have targeted them and probably pierce their Copperclouds with emotional Allomancy. But a Shardplate is vastly more invested than anything a Mistborn deals with. Even Rashek won't be able to pierce it. TLM ch 14: There are two examples from WoBs on how to push Shardblade (which would work the same for emotional Allomancy) - one requires you to wield a full power of the Well of Ascension, the other needs a really strong steelpush and duralumin. Per the second one, I can see Rashek's really strong emotional Allomancy burnt with duralumin to be able to pierce a Shardplate, but if the power of the Well is needed then even he can't do it. Sure, Rashek is powerful, he wins against any Radiant in direct confrontation, but not with emotional Allomancy.

What happens to the Singers between Desolations ?
alder24 replied to fievelgoespostal's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think a peace treaty was signed and Singers returned to their settlements. Keep in mind, Desolations were devastating to Rosharan population, destroying their technology and one, during which Nohadon lived, killed 9 out of 10 Alethi. Later Desolations were so frequent that humanity had no time to reinvent and had to rely on Soulcasting or bronze weapons. That's horrific. They had no resources to continue fighting, to manpower to try to exterminate the entire race - and Radiants would oppose that for sure. The best outcome is to sign a peace treaty and focus on rebuilding before the next Desolation comes. They were able to self-govern but they didn't have their own state, they lived within borders of Silver Kingdoms - no Singer state was shown on map. Moreover there would be many Singers who lived among humans - I think that's the case because they've started intermixing at some point and Herdazians and Horneaters are descendants of those relations. This suggests that at least some Singers lived among humans peacefully. There were also humans fighting on Odium's side, those would be more willing to accept Singers in their cities. We know that before or during the False Desolation Singers started to call themselves Parsh and Radiants heard about it. It seems there was some contact between them at least. There was some presence of Parsh around Iri, because they were pushing in the direction of its capital, but I think they were spread across the whole Roshar. -
It's theoretically possible: If spren can theoretically bond each other, then Siah Aimians can bond too. Lift is like Siah Aimian a little bit - she's more in CR then she should be, she can touch spren and she is still capable of bonding. I think Siah Aimians can bond with no problems, they are clearly physical beings with a bigger Cognitive presence. Because two spren can bond each other I think there is no line at all. Maybe you draw it at Shards.
-
We don't know that. Marasi wasn't a member of Ghostbloods, she was only able to see a fraction of their operation, not even in their main base in Elendel. While they clearly don't have Voidlight, it's possible there were some complications and they haven't figured out a way for Mishram to achieve that, or she refuses to cooperate. The break between SA5 and SA6 is around 10-15 years long, during which Mistborn Era 2 takes place. Why? What makes you so sure that the contest will happen at all? Taravangian has a loophole to exploit and the best outcome for him is to force Dalinar to break the terms. I'm 100% sure KoWT won't end with the duel, that's too obvious. Well, it was said in TLM that Roshar is too dangerous for Ghostbloods to travel there so something happened. I'm starting to think that BAM isn't that sane anymore, that connecting to every Parsh was too much for her and that strained her soul, making her a bit insane - Ulim said to Venli that "she was too small of a god" for example.

I don't think it's intent - accidental explosions trigger them. Red accidentally slit William Ann’s neck and that triggered them too. It seems that just blood in the air spilled by others triggers them. Even after William Ann’s got slit, Shades were still triggered by her blood:
-
This WoB seems to suggest that they more or less knew what would be the outcome and have people ready to take up Shards who they thought would be the best at controlling them. And the "not all the Vessels could take any of the sixteen" implies this as well, it would have been bad if they Shatter Adonalsium and then realized there is a Shard none can take up.
-
Disagree. Considering that a Shardblade is far more invested that you can't even steelpush it - you can't even use Surgebinding on plates and that's more power than Allomancy deals with. I doubt emotional Allomancy would sneak through it. You would need to dismiss the helmet for it to work.

6 | 3 | 1 - What do we think this secret project will be?
alder24 replied to CtrlAltDepressed's topic in Cosmere Discussion
In the recent livestream Brandon said that SP5 has around 120k words and takes place the furthest into the future of any books known to us. He also said he wanted to write it for a while, but started when he needed a break from SA5. That excludes a few things. I don't think it's The Grand Apparatus, or Kingmaker because we wouldn't really need a title reveal. I don't think it would be focused on Iriali, they will be a major player in the Space Era, I wouldn't expect Brandon to reveal too much about them that early. UTol is hard to say - theoretically speaking the system was already famous when Hoid was telling Yumi's story, one might argue that the time when Hoid is telling his story counts in the timeline and because SP5 is the furthest into the future, then it won't be about UTol as this event would be in the past relative to SP5. But whatever happened on UTol to make it famous happened most likely after Yumi's story and likely after TSM, so it's still on the table in my opinion. Because the Backerkit describes it as "a mythic worldhopper adventure," I think it will introduce us to several new places and visit some old ones. Silverlight is a big candidate in my opinion, Dragons might appear too, maybe something 17th Shard related? I don't expect it to be about any major Cosmere conflict because that's something for Mistborn Era 4, not for a small novella. But the major conflict might be a background to the story rather than focus. I think Mythos is a solid candidate. Not only the Backerkit description suggests that ("a mythic worldhopper adventure"), but I've also found a WoB about the name being a nickname and another one where Brandon said he wanted to write about it for a while now, which is the same thing he said about SP5 in the livestream. Both WoBs are from December 2022 and that's around when he started to write KoWT - so it would fit that Mythos appeared in WoBs when he started to develop it as a break from SA5. But other than that Mythos is a place/planet we know nothing about it, there are no WoBs about it. TSM is still in the Spoiler Zone, please respect it. TSM spoiler: We know Autonomy was Team Odium, she helped him in some way with Splintering of Dominion and Devotion (WoB) so why can't some other Shard join him for one fight? Ambition was nr 1 on Odium's hit list (WoB - at the end Brandon said "we're taking down Ambition," that's suspicious), she was the most dangerous according to him, Endowment is glad she is gone and is not worried about Odium at all - I see no reasons why Mercy couldn't have thought like that as well. And we know it's very dangerous for a Shard to go alone against two other Shards (WoB), so it would be odd for Odium to try to battle them both alone, with no support. Mercy is worrying in Sazed's opinion, maybe because they're still on Team Odium? And in my opinion it fits for Mercy to have this twisted intent (as ending suffering by death is Mercy thing) and joined to kill Ambition as an act of mercy. But on the other hand Odium was targeting Shards who settled with others because he can use their broken agreement as justification (WoB). It also makes sense if Mercy settled with Ambition together on Threnody and Odium attacked them both, killed Ambition and wounded Mercy (and that's they are worrying). Ultimately we still know too little, there are solid arguments for both cases. I personally think Mercy helped Odium, it's more fun to consider that. But this is not the topic to argue about this. -

Now I think of it, it's not even that. Voidlight is a PHYSICAL state of investiture, it's held by a body, it's held by a gemstone in Singer's body. Without a body, they can't hold it, they can't use it.
