Not really, more like a Dawnsliver: No he wouldn't. Who's to say he will be with Jasnah all the time? She will die of old age one day, he won't. He might just bring Design with him if he finds a way to get her out of Roshar (which is really hard to do). This just makes him more interesting. At least for Stormlight Archive the time period is relatively short (there will be like 10-20 years of break in between SA 5 and SA 6), so Hoid could be present on Roshar during the entire 10 books of SA, and we will be reading about mostly the same characters we already know. But for other books it just makes it more interesting to have big time separation between series (to see how magic and technology can progress together) and be introduced to new sets of characters every time period, rather than reading about old characters all the way till the end of Cosmere. What "spoils the city because he survived"? Kholinar? No. His "survival" has nothing to do with Kholinar's fall to Odium. And yes, he doesn't have to listen to Odium nor any other Shard. Why would he need to do that? He's a free person.

The Big Battle for the Cosmere
alder24 replied to Lighteyed Lieutenant's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Oh boy, for a moment I had flashbacks of Roshar vs Scadrial thread as I thought this is another one like this. Thanks Adonalsium it isn't! Rayse's goals were definitely to destroy all Shards and be the only ruler of Cosmere. Taravangian is unknown. He has an interest in Cosmere and wants to save them all from all the fools ruling over them, which does strongly suggest that he hasn't changed Rayse's goals. If he wins or draws the Contest of Champions he will definitely work on wider Cosmere next. Well, for now Kelsier wants to gain access to raw investiture to protect Scadrial (as we saw what 3 jars of pure Dor can do), and Mraize was willing to side with Odium and sold a child to Fused. Scadrial's enemy number one is Autonomy, and if Mraize remains more aligned with Odium and Fused for now, and if Odium turns against Autonomy, there is a chance of Ghostbloods allying with Odium to fight against Autonomy together, without Harmony's consent. Now if other Shards will pose a threat to Scadrial in Kelsier's mind, he might send his agents to their homeworlds and make a mess there. I think he is fully focused on protecting Scadrial and won't back off preemptive attack if needed. For now however he doesn't have resources for such actions. There is only one character that we know of who is a Dawnshard right now and she can't use it. But it's likely someone might use a Dawnshard if they would get it. You're really fishing for a RAFO card? Hoid is collecting powers for a reason, and he regrets something from his past. Hoid is likely already working on this one. Did you read Sixth of the Dusk? You should - it takes place in the far future of the Cosmere, near its end. You will like information gathered from this short novella. And after reading it there is a early released chapter of the sequel, which you can read here: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/448/#e14408 -
You need to aim for a proper binding point. Heart is still big so there are no problems with that. If you chose a wrong spot you might steal something else despite your correct intent: SA spoilers: The same happened with Wax - Harmony said his soul was disconnected from his body in BoM. I don't think so. Death works a bit differently than in our world. I think a soul is separated with a clinical death (as Wax and SA examples proves) but it can get reconnected as long as it didn't leave CR. But with Hemalurgy it's even different - it causes direct damage to the soul and as seen in SA, enough of it causes immediate death with the soul being instantly separated from its body. This is what is happening with Hemalurgy, enough damage to the soul caused by a single spike instantly separates a soul from its body. There is no way of spiking something else because there is no soul anymore. You need to either learn how to steal more than one power with a single spike or how to steal less "trashy" soul parts, lessening the damage done to the soul while still getting your power (for example parts of identity are stolen with a spike, you don't need it). If you manage to make the soul and the body survive a spiking even for a little while, you can repeat it.

How to Kill Hoid (For Fun and Profit)
alder24 replied to MistbornMathematician's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah, me too. We don't even know what compounding Allomancy does, most likely it makes it stronger - Rashek's steel push on Vin got weaker after his metalminds were ripped off him and there is WoB which says there is a way to fuel Allomancy with Feruchemy, so it's likely this. Based on that I think compounding a Divine Breath would make it stronger (worth more Breaths), but it would still be considered as a single Breath in Awakening. You could get to the 10th Heightening with that but you won’t Awaken with it (or at least more than once if it isn't your Divine Breath). Thankfully I'm ok. At least you warned that it's SP3 spoiler, so I didn't read it. But I'm still angry! It's 4 days after book's release! -
Then I think yes. But practically it's impossible. Everything we know of is stolen through the heart, only raw investiture isn't. But there are different binding points in the heart, like 4 I think. Because Kelsier almost immediately felt a ripping sensation right as he was slapped in the face by TLR, I would say that yes, a spike through the heart kills immediately. There isn't enough time to spike again. A spike can hold more than one power (WoB I've posted), and I think you can steal more than one power with a single spike with a single process. And it's different from what you propose, because you spike a person one time with one spike and get multiple powers in that spike. I personally believe that a single spike for stealing Allomancy/Feruchemy should be able to steal all 4 powers from a given quadrant.

How to Kill Hoid (For Fun and Profit)
alder24 replied to MistbornMathematician's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't think there is any "in between" realms. Collapsing perpendicularity might spit him out (because he isn't a part of it) or if it was done with Nightblood outright kill him. No, it was never confirmed. Brandon always RAFO those questions. For now only abilities are storable and Divine Breath. No raw investiture. It isn't infinite. That isn't a spoiler box! I'm simply furious! -
I don't think that's possible because all powers are stolen through the heart and this kills the donor. Either you would have to fit two spikes in the same binding point in the heart (not possible), or two spikes very close to each other aiming at two different binding points at the heart - depending on powers you want to steal. And you need to time it perfectly, as when a person dies, his spirit is separated from the body, so if one spike goes just milliseconds behind the first deadly spike, it won't steal anything as there is no soul anymore. It's impossible to time it perfectly. If you manage to do that it might work, but also their intents might mess them both up and would make some messy situation (they both want to rip off almost the same piece of the soul, connection to Preservation, and this might mess things up). A better way to do this would be to learn to steal powers without killing the victim and then spiking him again to steal something more. For me this WoB is about stealing more than 1 power with a single spike at the same time - like can you spike a Mistborn and steal both A-steel and A-pewter with a single spike and a single spiking.

How to Kill Hoid (For Fun and Profit)
alder24 replied to MistbornMathematician's topic in Cosmere Discussion
You don't need Investiture compounding. Firstly, nicrosil stores the ability to use investiture, like Allomancy or Feruchemy, not investiture itself (as far as we know right now). Secondly you need only some invested art and a Dawnshard to use it - Dawnshard would do the work, it would supercharge the invested art. If a Bondsmith can't take away Hoid's connection to his Dawnshard, a Bondsmith with a Dawnshard would be able for sure. But I think Bondsmith unbound would be able to mess with Hoid. They are more dangerous than Nightblood is. That's a fun and well thought idea. Very scary too, with this spike factory part. -
Where did Ruin's investiture end up after the Pits were destroyed? It didn't return to Ruin, nor the whole Atium burnt at the end of HoA did - destruction of the Pits ensured that Ruin wouldn't get his Atium for at least 300 years if Vin didn't kill him. This investiture was locked in the cycle, and even destruction of the Pits didn't change that. It goes back to SR (which is timeless) but it's inaccessible to the Shard - it's kind of a Splintered power of his. If Harmonium's investiture is locked in the cycle like Atium was, even giving people Lerasium made out of Harmonium won't imbalance Harmony, because this investiture is separated from him, just like Atium was separated from Ruin. Burning Lerasium wouldn't weaken Harmony just like burning Atium didn't weaken Ruin. But if Harmonium's investiture isn't locked in such cycle and is just a Shard's investiture leaking into PR, then giving people Lerasium might indeed further imbalance Harmony, as the same amount of Harmonium would be leaked into PR each year, while he would be getting back more Ruin's investiture as part of Preservation's investiture is used as Lerasium (but that's if burning Lerasium doesn't return it's investiture to Harmony but is stuck in person's spirit web).

Prediction For Stormlight 5 (Spoilers for RoW)

Electricity on Roshar? Not likely. Roshar is going a different path, magic-tech path. They have Stormlight and fabrials instead of electricity. Mistborn spoilers WoB: -
Prediction For Stormlight 5 (Spoilers for RoW)
alder24 replied to Jace The Firesworn's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Dreams about Brandon's books are the best! Autonomy - maybe. A Primal Aether for sure not - several Aethers combined are still weaker than a single Shard, one is far beneath it. An Aether would have little to none chances to defeat a Shard alone. What do you mean by "rogue" Primar Aether? An Aether who goes alone, against wishes/will of other Aethers? There can be Aether like that, why not? Every Aether is independent, capable of making decisions on their own. One can rebel against united effords of others. I don't think that would ever happen. Szeth swears to obey Dalinar's orders, not Nale's, he already decided whom to follow and doesn't struggle with that. However what will happen to Szeth if Dalinar gets turned into Fused and starts serving Odium? Will Szeth's 4th Ideal overwrite his 3rd one and allow him to act independently, or will he go back serving Taravangian, which is his worst nightmare (and Roshar's too). You gave me a very scary scenario to think about. -
There is a parallel there, but it isn't about Kelsier but it's about Sazed. In my opinion it shows us how Sazed has learned to lie so well that even Kelsier hasn't realized it, and we don't know what Sazed told that wasn't true. I bet there is a way to make the Harmonium-Trellium fission process more controllable - just like Uranium fission went from making bombs first, then commercial nuclear reactors. That would solve the problem of lots of energy being lost as it would be released at a far slower rate and be used to create electricity, and very likely more Atium or Lerasium would be produced in such reactor. It shouldn't work like that. Harmonium is already a combination of Ruin and Preservation's investiture, taking away just one part changes nothing. There is likely a similar cycle of Harmonium like Atium in era 1 - this investiture is permanently separated from Shard in a cycle of making new Harmonium. Just taking away Atium and storing it away would mean less Harmonium would get made - until you store so much Atium that you would stop the cycle completely. It shouldn't contribute to Harmony's imbalance, because just making Harmonium is already doing so. As soon as a bead of god metal gets burnt, investiture returns to the cycle, but it's possible Lerasium's investiture would get stuck in person's spirit web and won't quickly return to the cycle - but this shouldn't imbalance Harmony any more, as Ruin's investiture would wait for Preservation's to continue this cycle, just like destruction of the Pits of Hathsin didn't immediately case all investiture from burnt Atium go straight back to Ruin, this investiture remained bind to the cycle. Good point. If Wax decided not to have more kids, his Mistborness dies with him. Max and the other kid won't inherit this stronger Allomatic genes as they were already born when Wax's spirit web get changed by Lerasium.

Not really, but close. He is even more ancient than Heralds (Heralds never bonded with spren except for Nale which happened after Radiant Orders were established) and he has never bonded any spren before bonding Design, nor did he come from the same place as Heralds (Ashyn, they were alive when the destruction of Ashyn happened and they migrated from Ashyn to Roshar, but people on Ashyn lived there likely far longer than Heralds are alive). He is way older than them, and came from a very different place. At some point he has said that "there is only one person as old as he is on Roshar, and she dislikes him" - he was talking about Cultivation's Vessel, Koravellium Avast. There are multiple hits in SA about Hoid, mostly in Letters in epigraphs and few in the Dawnshard novella (not directly). Others are mentioned in the Mistborn series but most information we have about his are from WoBs. So slight Cosmere-wide spoilers about Hoid:

Theory: The Cryptics are plotting something big
alder24 replied to Marabout's topic in Stormlight Archive
Nah, they're just drawn to lies people tell themselves. They don't desire to conquer anything and their reputation is mostly a stereotypical exaggeration of past events and persona. They also travel in groups - they chose future Radiants based on a committee and accompany their soon-to-be-bonded comrade from CR - that's why there is a "crowd" of Cryptics around Elhokar and Shallan. -
What books have you read? Yes. Each Solcaster can transform into 1-3 materials. Those doing more than 1 are rare. But gems in Soulcasters have to match what substance they can transform things into. It doesn't matter what is their original material, only the end-result substance. That's emerald, it makes also plants - check out this page on Coppermind about 10 Essences: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Ten_Essences Plus Soulcasters are more limited - like emerald Soulcasters can't make whatever they want from wood/plants/moss, they can make only one specific thing - one type of wood, one type of plant etc. Azir has a rare Soulcaster that allows them to create bronze - not any metal, just bronze. Fabrials are just far more limited than Radiants are. Yes, Jasnah is a Radiant, which is different from fabrial Soulcasters. She can transform into any material she wants, she is only limited by her skills in that. But even when she is Soulcasting (and Shallan too) she needs to draw Stormlight from a specific gem, corresponding to the material she wants to make. Well, after some very long period of time objects inside the palace would be considered as a part of it (perception of people around matters a lot): Human cognitive aspect is represented by a flame, not a sphere. Living things are always represented by flames - fishes, horses, humans etc. For them to be Soulcasted you need to touch that flame, or focus on it and Connect to it (Jasnah can Soulcast at a distance as seen in WoK with thugs). Some things might be harder to Soulcast than others but that's depending on the will of material (and how invested it is) - for example stone is stubborn and has to be convinced with freedom and movement while air should be ordered with discipline. Different essences require different strategies. Jasnah once said "Power is an illusion of perception" - that's how you Soulcasts - sometimes it's about convincing, but often it's about ordering the object to change - it's a battle of wills in many cases. It depends on the material you're soulcasting. For every type of essence there is a different approach. You don't look at a body as a complex object composed of many different organs and tissues - for you it's just a body, one single thing. That's why complexity of the body doesn't matter that much when you're Soulcasting it into something different - the end result will be a uniform substance. But Soulcasting a person is much harder than just dead objects, they will resist Soulcasting. The more Invested something is, the harder it is to Soulcast - a thug in an alley would be easy to Soulcast compared to a Radiant infused with Stormlight, which would be very, very hard to Soulcast. For Soulcasting they need to know the end result substance more than what material they have now: Spoilers for epilogue of WoR: Edit: OB ch 120:

Using A-electrum effectively can be learned, but it's hard: But with those 2 Twinborns I can't see much synergy with their powers. Yes, separately those are nice, but I can't think of what they can do together which is special. Better at fighting and running, climbing and diving and that's it.

Chull ancestors? Someone looked at a chull and said "oh yeah, I love you! Let's start a family together!"? Herdazian and Horneaters are the result of human and Singers interbreeding after they had arrived on Roshar with Odium. They had 7000 years for that - that's quite a lot of time for them to get close to each other and interbreed. The Eila Stele for me is proof that Singers hadn't met humans before Ashynites arrived on Roshar. If there were humans already on Roshar, the Eila Stele wouldn't put so much emphasis on humans inability to hear Rhythms of Roshar, their soft skin with no shell etc. The description is meant to be a clear warning for other Singers who had never met humans to know how they look and to avoid them - if there were humans already on Roshar they would just say "those otherworlders look like our humans". And please avoid double posting. You can edit your post and add more by using "edit" option at the bottom of your post:

What other books have you read? He couldn't control anybody while he was imprisoned in the Well. Only when the Well was close to being filled (less than a year) he slowly was able to reach out and whisper to some few individuals. But nothing more. His release enabled him to take full control over hemalurgic constructs. But just like he didn't force his control over all Koloss all the time (which allowed Vin and Elend to control a small army of them and believe everything is fine), he didn't enforce his control over Kandra - he didn't need them, and wasn't sure what was their role in overall plan. He just didn't consider them worthy of his time, they were pacifists hiding in their hole all the time. Only when he realized what their purpose was, did he take action. There is also another thing - he isn't omnipresent - his mind, the Vessel, can't be at all places at once. He can focus on one place (and that was always where Vin was) and pay little attention to many others (which was useful still, as he could order inquisitors, whisper to Penrod or Spook etc). That's why he didn't bother with them - he never focused his full mind on them until one of them left with a bag of Atium. For me it makes perfect sense why he didn't bother with them - they aren't fighters, they are spies, and there is nothing they could do that wasn't already being done by inquisitors or spiked people (like Penrod). He didn't need them. The problem with this is that he couldn't. Almost every bit of his power was thrown at opposing Preservation and almost every bit of Preservation was thrown at opposing Ruin. He couldn't accelerate the end more, because he was bound by Preservation. That's why he couldn't create more, that's why Vin's actions as Preservation were so important, because at first Ruin allowed her to act, and then threw his power to oppose her and force her to watch destruction made by her. He couldn't do anything more without regaining Atium. There is a significant difference in what Ruin can do to people and what Preservation - Ruin is shouting to them, Preservation is listening to them, that's why Preservation could hear and see them all, while Ruin's as more invasive couldn't. But they were both blinded by metal around the caves. He was aware of them, he just didn't find them important and useful. He had Koloss, the army slaughtering everyone, Inquisitors, his servants spiking people who later caused even more chaos and destruction, suffering while doing so - he simply didn't need Kandra, they couldn't do anything more he was already doing. That's why he didn't bother with them, he preferred spikes. He's not just about change, he's fully about Ruin - increasing entropy - that's at least Ati's interpretation, which matters. But Ruin isn't about simple change, but change leading to destruction (increase of entropy). There is another Shard which is about change. No he didn't. Kelsier wasn't spiked and he wasn't guided by Ruin with his rebellion. It was all Kelsier as at that time Ruin was still imprisoned and his reach was severely limited to few spiked individuals. He couldn't do it, he was imprisoned in the Well, he barely was able to reach and whisper into spiked and crazy people, he couldn't do anything like that. None of Shards is evil. But Shards are composed of a power with Intent and a Vessel, the mind controlling the power. Over time a Vessel will be overcomed by power's intent and will be fully about what it's intent is about, with slight influence of Vessel's perception. Like Ruin - its Vessel, Ati, was fully focused on destruction because at this time his mind is overcomed by Ruin's intent. That's something we still don't know about too much. But Ruin did changed Terris prophecies but missed their hidden message

I can assure you, we are not - @Koloss17 As a member of the F-tin Cult I'm obligated to tell you that F-tin is the most versatile Feruchemical ability we know of. I personally believe that if you have a sensory organ doing something specific, you can store that. You have pain receptors in your body - you can store pain. You have an inner ear - you can store balance (it would stack up with balance granted by A-pewter). You have temperature receptors in your skin - you can store that and feel no heat or cold (storing this and pain is dangerous, as your body doesn't know what is happening to it and it can cause a serious damage or even death - you're not immune to damage, just to feeling it). You can store A-bronze sense, you can likely store steelsight (but it doesn't give you the ability to push/pull on metals), you can store Heightening effects like life sense. Yes, F-tin is really cool, especially combined with other invested arts

WoB confirms this is an error. Momentum is always conserved (what Wax meant was that tapping mass doesn't change your gravitational acceleration). That thread was written 2 months ago... Recently we've discussed F-iron behavior in different frames of reference which does indeed cause a problem with conservation of momentum. This might be an oversight from Brandon and Peter, or there is something we still don't know - or we're poking holes too deep and this won't ever matter in books. After all, those are fantasy books with fantasy physics which will never work in real life no matter how hard we try. We need Brandon and Peter's words on this one.

Nope, BoM has a Leecher throwing a charged Primar Cube near to Wax and that leeched out his metal reserves, chromium charged cube already has an area of effect, BoM ch 7:

Prediction For Stormlight 5 (Spoilers for RoW)
alder24 replied to Jace The Firesworn's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I agree. Weeping will happen after part 1 (contest of champions) and the rest of the book will be about dealing with consequences of it (dead Stormfather, no light, no Highstorms etc). But at the end of the book, Stromfather will get healed either by releasing BAM, or by restoring and Ascending to Honor. -
Per WoBs I posted, he can both combine Shards together and possibly restore Honor from its Splintered pieces. "Full power of Honor" isn't required for that, he is Bondsmith unbound.
-
Just remember, he is mad. Take what he says with a grain of salt. I don't think he can claim that he's "an aspect of the Almighty", because for all we know he isn't bound to any Shattered piece of Honor, like Dalinar/SF is. Can he be? Possibly, but then Stormfather should be able to recognize that. Honor is about laws and bindings. No. However it uses the Honor's purest surge, Adhesion, specifically spiritual Adhesion - manipulating connections. Yes, but one doesn't have to be a Bondsmith to Ascend to multiple Shards, he just has to have proper connections to them. No, Ishar isn't a Shard, he doesn't have as much power as a Shard, he isn't Honor. But he's unbound, he can do a lot with his powers and bind a Shard under the right circumstances. I don't think Ishar can do more than a Shard, especially Honor, but he can certainly mess things up. No need for them.

Kolossblooded strength and a kandra.
alder24 replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, he's not a Koloss, it's not spikes that make him stronger, just his body. Eating a kolossblooded would make kandra as strong as he was. TenSoon get stronger and faster in dog's body, in the same way a kandra will get stronger in kolossblooded body.
