I had been wondering what the main difference was between what the humans can offer spren versus what the Listeners can offer them. I think their ability to bring spren closer to the Physical Realm is probably correct.

What if the whole book is about Wayne looking for his lost belt buckle?

Thanks for the link. I remember seeing it was free on his website, I just haven't gotten around to reading it. I've been reading some Rothfuss recently. I think Warbreaker is the last Cosmere novel currently out that I have left to read.

[SH spoilers] Kelsier and the 17th Shard
Andy92 replied to PadraicSeebrr's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Kelsier may not be the founder of the 17th Shard, but I wouldn't put it past him if he kinda hijacked it...He could also just be a leader of a certain sub-group if there are a good amount of people involved. -
I guess I need to read Warbreaker...because those references crop up a lot in SA and I have no idea what they mean lol.

That's the general theme of what happens in Zelda games with the Triforce. The ones who hold the pieces of the Triforce influence how the power behaves depending on the will of their hearts.

I think it's also worth asking, are we 100% sure Presevstion and Ruin are two of the sixteen Shards, or is it possible Harmony was one of the sixteen, and something happened before the creation of Scadrial to split the Shard into two? I'm sure this conversation has come up before, but I'm not sure what the actual answer is.

I watched Hacksaw Ridge a couple nights ago, and the main character in that movie (which was a true story) resembled Kaladin's struggles to some degree. He fights with the concept of whether or not it's okay to kill in order to protect others, and it reminded me a lot of the conversation Kaladin had with his father in WoK. Hacksaw Ridge also had romance involved with a soldier leaving his fiancé to fight in WWII. I know there are brief mentions of the girl Kaladin had feelings for in the flashback scenes, so you could possibly expand on that concept a little more than the book did to help the movie appeal to a wider audience. Look at what Peter Jackson did with Aragorn and Arwen. A lot of their romance is mentioned in the apendices of LOTR, but in the movie, it's a main plot point that drives Aragorn and Arwen throughout the war. My only hesitation to this is that this romance never actually goes anywhere in the books, and Kaladin seems pretty disinterested in relationships for the most part. But I do think the first movie could use some sort of romance that isn't Dalinar's. And Shallan and Adolin don't even meet each other until WoR.

The Honorblade vs Shardblade difference did cross my mind, I just forgot where any references to their exact differences were. Makes sense, @Weltall. @Jondesu, this makes me even more curious to know where that blade ended up since Honorblades would definitely be more rare than regular Shardblades.

Sorry to bump an older thread (just a few weeks though so hopefully it's not too big of a deal). But I was re-reading the WoK epilogue last night, and I had a question about the blade Taln (or the man who claims to be Taln) is carrying. This was the blade described as "long, narrow, and straight, shaped like an enormous spike." I don't have the book on me right now, but I'm pretty sure shortly after this description is given, Taln drops the blade, and it clinks against the ground, and the book doesn't seem to suggest that the blade turns to mist (like a Shardblade normally would). I know it's been confirmed that this blade has been switched with the one that's seen in WoR, but my question was about why the Shardblade didn't disappear when Taln dropped it? I can try to look up the exact wording when I have access to the book later, but I thought I'd ask about it while it was on my mind. I thought it was pretty difficult to keep a blade from turning back to mist if the person bonded to it wasn't physically holding it.

I think Netflix seems like the best route if they do a TV series instead of films. Sanderson fans would sign up for Netflix just to watch it, and potentially millions of other current subscribers might check it out since it wouldn't cost any extra. I was reading through a recent Sanderson AMA he did on reddit, and someone asked about the state of the Cosmere movies. He said that even though a SA movie has been in the works by DMG longer, Mistborn isn't too far from passing it in the planning phases because it has a smaller scope of work that needs done in comparison. A lot of video game companies have been doing the whole fantasy thing well recently too. The Witcher (which actually was a book series) was very well done. Elder Scrolls and Dark Souls are a couple other great series that do a good job at telling stories in a video game environment. I think both SA and Mistborn would work well in that setting.

Same reason musicians don't release albums until around 3-6 months after they've been recorded (depending on the band). A lot goes into promoting the album from the record label. In this case, it's books and publishing companies, but it's a similar kind of process. And as others have said, this is just the 3rd draft. He might have a couple more.

Geniuses Wanted- Well Read Sanderfans -with restrictions
Andy92 replied to 1stBondsmith's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Lots of good ideas in this thread. I don't have much basis for my theory, but here it goes anyways. I think Kelsier will ascend and take up the power of a Shard in a future book. I think the external powers threatening Scadrial will eventually prove to be too much for Sazed, and the planet will find itself in dire straights. I think Kelsier will find the power of one of the Shards that hasn't been introduced in the Cosmere yet, and I think it would be really cool if the Shard was named Hope. He will prove himself once and for all to be the one thing you can't kill. -

I've wondered if looking into the Spiritual Realm to see the future is related to what people say on Roshar about...
-
So instead of a nuclear reaction in the way of a physical release of energy, it's a reaction in a way that releases Invested energy. Whatever the metal releases when it reacts with water seems to be more significant in regards to the Spiritual realm in comparison to the Physical realm.

As others have said, Brandon confirmed the connection between the two, but I suspect there's a hint in the name ettmetal. Ett is a Swedish word for one, and that translation leads to the possibility that one = harmony. Might be a coincidence, might be intentional.

I wasn't a chemistry major, but I have a degree in electronics, so I've studied a good bit about metals (although I've studied more about their uses for electricity in comparison to their chemical structures). But if we're going down the path of assuming cesium was the element Brandon modeled Ettmetal after, then I can think of a few possible ways this might affect Scadrial in future eras. 1. Cesium can be used to convert various from of energy (such as heat and light) into electricity. Converting light into electricity is used with various fiber optic devices. While other elements can also be used for optics (in safer ways), this is one function cesium is capable of. 2. Cesium used to be tested as a type of fuel for spacecrafts. Could be a possible use for the metal as Scadrial develops into a space exploration society. 3. With the explosive natural of cesium, all I really know is that there's a super-oxide created when cesium burns in the air. Super-oxides are typically used to create the sources of oxygen used for astronauts, although I think other elements such as potassium and its super-oxide are more regularly used for the oxygen generators. When cesium reacts with water, you would get a different output since the element would be combining with H2O, and I'm not entirely sure what that ends up creating (besides an explosion lol). I'll take a wild guess and say we might end up seeing Ettmetal play into Scadrial as a fuel for space travel based on the chemical nature it's based off of. I'm just not that confident in being able to guess how everything with Ettmetal will play into the magic systems of Scadrial.

I'm curious as to whether or not The Lost Metal is referring to Atium beginning to regrow on Scadrial because enough time has passed. I've heard theories of some other metals too (and maybe Atium sounds a little too obvious), but I'll be interested to see what this metal actually is.
-
I like the idea in general because the possibility of using the metal inside of wires (such as copper, but other metals are also possibilities) as a type of a metalmind opens up a lot of possibilities. As the computer age advances, you may start seeing certain Mistborns as some sort of cyborg...part man, part machine. Similar to the old Inquisitors with spikes, but with a modernized twist.

So are you detesting the idea of Kaladin with Shallan or are you shipping Kalafiend?
-
Huh, that would be an interesting concept for a future book.
