  1. Assuming he even said that in the first place. Both relevant WoBs regarding feruchemy are paraphrased, and I wouldn't be surprised, going by the second, that the first had actually had him saying something like "he uses an underlying mechanism that feruchemy uses" and have that mixed up into him using feruchemy.
  2. Another addition to what Calderis said about the translation of the term "surge". In the vision where Dalinar spoke Dawnchant, he said "surgebinder," which means that they do have a precise magical translation of the whatever the word for surge is in Dawnchant.
  3. He doesn't use feruchemy to manipulate Fortune.
  4. First of all, like I said, the concept of surges appear to have come into existence before the appearance of surgebinding. This means that it cannot have originally been used to simply explain the ten variations of Heraldic powers. The translated Stele, which predated the first desolation, used the term, and the existence of the Heralds and the observation of surgebinding only came about following the start of the desolations. Therefore, my feeling is that the ten variations of surgebinding formed using the definitions of the surges as a base to distinguish themselves, as a result of the significance of the cognitive realm on it. Similarly, the other main manifestations of investiture on Roshar, voidbinding and fabrials, will principally draw upon those base definitions for surges to distinguish the base variation. Khriss is still essentially right however, as the surges are not true fundamental forces of the Cosmere, and from a greater Cosmere perspective, can really only be used to describe the workings of the manifestations of investiture of Roshar. Other way around. The spren were formed from the human perception of surges. I see though that you seem to not put much stock in the Stele. Do you think then that it's chronological origin cannot be trusted? Barring that though, in the absence of proof that its information or origin is fake, I see no reason why we can't take it to be true regarding the timeline of when the term surges was used. You cannot ignore it just because it contradicts your theory.
  5. Not very easy to show since most aluminum gnats are never even aware of their powers. Instinctive burning to prevent emotional allomancy using trace metals would be momentary at best as the aluminum would destroyed what little you've ingested as well. Maybe we'll get into it in the future when aluminum becomes even more widespread and people discover better ways to control it.
  6. Not exactly. From what I understand, what the people of Roshar call "surges" are just their way of referring to what they believe are fundamental forces in the Cosmere. They don't see them as belonging to a shard, and them defining the surges seems to predate the appearance of surgebinding, according to the Stele. All variations of powers on Roshar seem to follow the pattern of manipulating one of the surges, regardless of cultural definition. You made a lot of other interesting points that I'd like to respond to, but I'll need time to do so.
  7. WoB implies that there are ten variations in voidbinding, like surgebinding.
  8. No, because the actual powers of allomancy being used are still accessed and used the same way that it would in a natural user. Allomancy is still Preservation's power channeled through burning metal. Hemalurgy is in no way changing how the power is accessed or used, it is just artificially giving them the power. There are two issues with this statement, in my opinion. The first is more a matter of imprecise wording, but I think that voidbinding uses the same ten surges that surgebinding does, it just manipulates the surges in a different way. Second I don't think that Venli's envoyform, a Regal form, is voidbinding. The reason why I think this is that by the end of WoR, we had not yet seen voidbinding occur directly. Therefore, this means that the lightning abilities that stormform were using was not voidbinding, and I think it's unlikely that there would be a mismatch between Regal forms with some voidbinding and others not, so it seems likely that none are voidbinding.
  9. Yeah, I know. My opinion is just that they aren't what you're speculating them to be. I didn't say mine was more valid. and the same can be said for yours.
  10. Not really, because his main desire of not changing prevents him from taking the powers of the shards he kills. So the two goals are slightly exclusive. At best, he can be the only entity of single-shard power in the Cosmere, but he can never gain any more power past that.
  11. That would still count as multiple spikes, therefore creating multiple graftings and holes in the soul where they attached the power to it. Regarding the main discussion. From my understanding, there are specific bindpoints for stealing attributes and specific bindpoints for attaching attributes, but there isn't just one point for each attribute. For example, steel has two known attachment points, the eye and the center of the chest. I do think that the bindpoint, either at the point of stealing or attaching or both, can affect how the power affects the person it is attached to.
  12. Probably not, since according to Honor they were used to destroy Ashyn. I can't see how perfect gemstones would have allowed them to achieve that, though the name kind of fits.
  13. Wait for the paperback version. It will be slightly lighter.
  14. My opinion is that it's something of an unintentional side effect, the mix of the direction the shard wants to go with Rayse's personality and how he interprets it. To say that he wants to be the only god is a bit inaccurate I would say. It's more of the fact that he just he's afraid of being changed or beaten, and the easiest way for him to lessen that fear is by making the other shards, the only entities in the Cosmere which could rival and oppose him in terms of direct power, unusable. So the why is that he's afraid of others and change, not that he wants power.
  15. Well, it looks like no one has posted the WoBs regarding Odium's motivations yet, so I'll go ahead and do that. Spoilered for size. Anyhow, the gist seems to be that Odium is destroying shards because he's afraid of being rivaled and possibly destroyed, and generally speaking he's trying to make the power unusable anyways. Therefore, I think that he's definitely not a secret Robin Hood, at least not intentionally.
  16. Splintering doesn't really affect the magic systems the shards have caused though. The only way I can see splintering making power accessible to more people is if those people actually take possession of the splinters and draw upon its power directly.
  17. Yeah, but I think it's a fair implication. Obviously he couldn't have known that he was a bloodmaker until he touched gold for the first time.
  18. One of the Five Scholars. Denth's sister and Vasher's wife. She's the one who made Nightblood, with Vasher's assistance.
  19. Copper feruchemy, allowing him to view the memory within the coppermind.
  20. Flaring Cadmium and Bendalloy change the time scale. I think flaring copper increases the strength of the cloud though, so it's harder for enhanced bronze to pierce it, and vice versa with bronze.
  21. Adding on to what Calderis. All visions were for all intents and purposes, events which happened. The only one which wasn't based on reality, wasn't really anything at all, the vision where Honor showed Dalinar what he expected to come, and told what he thought of how he could defeat Odium. That was a vision without anything, because Honor can't really create visions, he can only adapt his memories, and make them a bit more interactable.
  22. Pattern implies in WoR that the Stormfather was wounded by the Recreance. However, he was powerful enough to survive the effects, unlike most other spren.
  23. @Shallan's Ward @Oversleep You guys should probably remove any spoilers from your posts.
