Nightblood Taught Odium How To Kill Heralds
Spoolofwhool replied to Leuthie's topic in Stormlight Archive
True, good point. However, that did just involve a shard making their godmetal, which is the main case we know of investiture converting directly into physical matter, other than the gemhearts in greatshells. Not sure how well it can apply to a shard making a non-godmetal material, like the gem in the dagger, assuming even that the main metal of the dagger is a godmetal. I mean, how long do you think it would take to reverse-engineer a revolutionary new process, design a way to use it, then construct the dagger? Even if we assume that Odium did all the first two steps easily on the side, the actual construction of the dagger should've taken time. Like I said earlier, I don't think Odium just realmatically created the dagger from investiture, so the Fused would've had to have made it, which surely would've taken time. -

I don't think Odium made the dagger. I'm fairly certain it was the Fused under his instruction. First of all, we've never seen a shard do anything like that. The only physical manipulation we've seen performed by the power of shards is the creation and rearrangement of Scadrial, and none of that involved the creation of physical matter, simply rearrangement of what was pre-existing, or the very slight things Ruin did where he affected written texts. Nothing on the scale of creating a highly complex invested object. Secondly, any sort of direct manipulation like that, which I'm sure is possible by a shard, I think would require an extension of his being which he cannot or will not do. There's a reason he isn't directly interfering with events on Roshar and is forced to act through human, singer, and spren agents instead. Either whatever Honor did is preventing him from directly acting, or to do so would involve making him vulnerable to Cultivation and actions she might performed, a position he would be unwilling to put himself in. -
Nightblood Taught Odium How To Kill Heralds

Hoid showed up with a cart full of aluminum and no one really knew what it was. At most, what we've heard of is that aluminum is rare and has value because it can only be soulcast. Though there has been indicated as some other things going on there, which could be a hint at it being more known in the past. And for 4000 years, Odium has had no agents on Roshar who could've implemented any plan to permanently kill the Heralds. We have yet to see any real agents of his which could've accomplished what was needed to make the dagger other than the Fused. Why would being heavily invested make it easier to be able to see aluminum? Also, once again, nothing has indicated that aluminum was ever used in the past by the Fused in their fights. I also have one more major argument against your idea: Timeline. Assuming the sections with Moash are happening chronologically in-line with the other sections around it, Moash was handed the knife and commanded to kill Jezerien immediately after the battle. This means that Odium saw Nightblood kill a Fused and figured how to use that to kill a Herald, and had the Fused in Kholinar make the dagger in the time between Szeth's arrival and the end of the battle. While it's not unbelievable that Odium could've figured out the theoretical knowledge in that time span, I find it highly unlikely that a weapon which could enumerate some of Nightblood's abilities could have been constructed in that short a time frame. At the very least, the materials to make it would've had to have been gathered already. -

Yes, but you haven't explained how they knew the sheath is aluminum. It's just a sheath, and the only main clue which could possibly point to it being aluminum is that it's silvery in color. Also, aluminum, canonically from what Brandon has been saying, may not be an actual viable defense against shardblades. See here: Also keep in mind that at the time of the Aharehtiam 4000 years ago, there were practically no dead shardblades, so guards for the shardblades that we see now were likely non-existent, and they're probably not aluminum anyways. Furthermore, you're assuming that using aluminum to defend against shardblades is some sort of standard practice that the Fused engage is, when we haven't actually seen any hint that that is the case. He didn't have any Fused on Roshar until now after Honor's death. Also, you're assuming that there might be a narrative significance, when in fact that there might not be. The weight assigned to Nightblood killing the Thunderclast is in fact far less than the weight assigned to Jezerien being killed, so there really isn't much of a link. -
Because really the surges aren't linked to shards in any way. They're interpretations of fundamental forces. Personally I don't agree with that reason for why they wouldn't be able access adhesion.

Pretty much this, plus we have a WoB that Odium was aware in advance. -
The point that they don't have adhesion isn't because it's more shared by the more honorable Orders, but more that it goes against how Odium works and perceives the world.

[OB] Nightblood In Cognitive Realm
Spoolofwhool replied to Child of Hodor's topic in Stormlight Archive
To add to what R'Shara said. The weapon Azure had, which is almost certainly another Type IV Awakened Entity, was still a sword in Shadesmar. As such, it makes sense that Nightblood would just be as a sword in Shadesmar. -

Spoolofwhool replied to Leuthie's topic in Stormlight Archive
It shows that Nightblood killing the Thunderclast and others at the Battle of Thaylen City was completely irrelevant to Odium being aware of Nightblood's capabilities since I think it's very likely that Odium already knew it could do that, as shown by him forewarning the Fused on how to fight his wielder. Nonetheless, nothing about this entire interaction has a tangible link to the creation of the dagger which was used against Jezerien. -

You'll need to expand on your second sentence because nothing else is giving an explanation for how the Fused knew that the sheath had aluminum or could block the attack. Ornamentation, or lack therefore, would be a pretty silly reason to assume a sheath is made out of aluminum. The second half of the sentence seems to be saying that the Fused have a limited knowledge of metallurgy since they're from a pre-Recreance time, which contrasts sharply with you saying that they might know that aluminum can block magic because they know more. -

Spoolofwhool replied to Leuthie's topic in Stormlight Archive
How would they have known the sheath is aluminum or that generally it was able to block Nightblood in some way? There was definitely certainty there, if not the Fused is just dumb for trusting that a completely unknown piece of equipment might be able to block a weapon which has shown itself capable of annihilating a thunderclast in a single attack? Under the premise that they knew nothing about Nightblood before that battle, they would have no way of knowing if the sheath actually was capable of containing Nightblood's power, instead of just being a sheath for what could presumably be a well-designed weapon which was capable of shutting itself off. Along with what Cal said, it's pretty clear they knew about Nightblood and fight someone wielding him. Either way, we know by WoB that Odium knew about Nightblood and it would make sense for him to have warned the Listeners that there was a possibility of Nightblood appearing. -

Spoolofwhool replied to Leuthie's topic in Stormlight Archive
Considering that the Fused knew to use Nightblood's sheath as a defense against it, I think it's likely that Odium knew of Nightblood's capabilities in advance. Therefore, actually seeing what he did to to the thunderclast likely had no effect on his overall plan. -
Nightblood Taught Odium How To Kill Heralds
Spoolofwhool replied to Leuthie's topic in Stormlight Archive
Possibly because previously, the Heralds were strong enough to actually prevent an attack of that nature from succeeding. Perhaps also Honor could've stopped it from succeeding as well, as they were directly connected to his power. There are a lot things different between now and four millennia ago when the Desolations last occurred. It's unlikely that one single element which has only had an impact in recent times at a single event would've had such a significant impact is unlikely. Also, for Nightblood to have fully inspired this, that means that whatever process was needed to make that knife was designed and implemented, with the knife constructed from whatever unknown materials it is constructed from, in an extremely small window of time. -
[OB] Where did the Listeners acquire their shardblades
Spoolofwhool replied to SzethIsBadAsHell's topic in Stormlight Archive
Per Gavilar's biography, he thought the Listeners had shardblades from the first moment he had met them, (well?) before the Vengeance Pact and his death. The doorway to the Oathgate center was sealed by decades, if not centuries, of crem. I doubt anyone else had been through there previously. I agree with Cal, they probably find them in the ruins of Narak. -

I mean, physical and spiritual damage would kill him before spiritual age backlash killed, so I would be more worried about that than having the time to start tapping. I think the physical damage alone would be a near instantaneous kill which is why he would need to be tapping gold at the moment to prevent that instantaneous death.
-
Assuming it's possible to charge a hemalurgic spike at distance, which is still unknown, that could work assuming he wasn't tapping gold at the time. If he were tapping gold, it would heal the physical and spiritual damage to his self, and regain the ability to tap his age.
-
Also a relevant passage from WoR when Shallan soulcasts the ship:
-
Yeah, that's a fair analogy. Also just less instantaneous.

As we saw in Secret History, holding the full power of Preservation prevented Kelsier from talking to people with damaged spiritwebs because the power of Preservation automatically tried to fill and repair the spiritwebs the moment he touched them, thereby removing the holes which he could use to talk to them. Probably with more control or practice he could avoid that from happening, but naturally, the power prevents his own efforts from talking to people. Another shard wouldn't have the power trying to do this automatically, so could speak or otherwise influence the person through the cracks.

No, spikes create holes in souls, not fills them, and it is through those holes that Ruin, allomancers, or other entities could affect the hemalurgic creations. The reason why Leras could not speak to or control people was because of the nature of his power, where it would automatically attempt to fill the holes in the soul to sustain it, therefore preventing him from using those holes to influence them.

Spikes open an entity to any influence, not just from one particular shard. That's how Kelsier could talk to spiked people as well. Bleeder only had one spike though, which didn't open her soul enough to make her controllable.
