  1. Well, the prophesy calls for men from the hidden island of the Origin (Ocean) reclaiming the land. Perhaps these men are able to employ immense power or technology that wouldn't require large numbers? I think that whatever it is that the purpose is to foreshadow events in latter books. It could also be Aimia because the land is hidden by storms. Judging from other interludes there definitely something going on there even still.
  2. Just off the top of my head Denna from the King Killer Chronicles. Just a complete drama queen that I just don't understand. I get that she's had a tough life, but everything she does just ends up vexing me. I read the first Twilight book, because I kept on hearing about it from every female I run into, and found Bella just so annoying.
  3. I just saw that the next book in The Expanse series (Persepolis Rising) is coming out next week. This is my favorite Science Fiction series so that's kind of exciting. I noticed that it had December 5, up for a while now on amazon, but the author never confirmed it and I had been hearing no buzz. I just discovered these wonderful books in January of this year so I probably hold off buying this one right away and do a full reread next year to prepare for book 8 (they have been really good about releasing one book per year). Anyways just thought I would pass this information along!
  4. Oh sorry I thought you were referring to stuff that happened in Oathbringer...Words of Radiance stuff is fine here! Sanderson writes so many characters that not all will like them them. With books this big there are also going to be plotlines that I also don't care for.
  5. I really didn't like her in the first two books, but she grew on me with the third one. My biggest problem in the first two books was her lame humor and how completely out of touch she was with the lower classes (a rich woman taking a poor soldiers boots...really!). Now, she certainly isn't my favorite, but I no longer cringe when I get to her chapters. I know you are new, but they have this rule about anything with Oathbringer stuff needs to have (OB) in the title and be in the Oathbringer Spoiler section. I will flag it so a administrator can move it over. On another note. Welcome to the Shard!
  6. Welcome! What's your profile picture? Looks kind of familiar...
  7. Just got done watching Coco at the movie theater. I ended up really enjoying it, but for the first half of the movie, or so, the main character really annoyed me. I thought that it was promoting a message I couldn't disagree more with, but at the end the character realizes his mistakes, that he was wrong, and really changes. It ended up being a touching movie with a lot of heart and I enjoyed its message. I would not recommend taking kids below the age of 8 because there were some parts really little kids would find scary (not normally something you need to worry about with Disney/Pixar). I thought the Disney "short" was good, but it was almost 30 minutes. It was almost like watching two movies!
  8. Looks like you put a lot of time and thought into this; hope it works out! Best of luck!
  9. Wow I believe Brandon was more open than usual and got some really good information from the signing. Two things that come mind: 1. I was almost positive that a past State of Sanderson said Skyward was cosmere but it looks like it will not be. 2. I still don't understand the big secrecy about the earth shattering stuff found in The Wheel of Time series. Why can't team Jordan say something like, "This isn't canon, but a very plausible idea that such and such is going on."
  10. When Jasnah is pontificating to her mother and Navani thinks to herself Here we go. Lectured by my own daughter again. I think you have to be a parent to see the humor in it
  11. I've always wanted to give this a try, the samples sound great, but it is still a little too expensive in my opinion; especially when the other audiobook can be obtained rather cheaply. I don't really understand the business model of selling 1/5 of a book. I would be willing to pay $30 dollars for the entire set. Thanks for the information though! Maybe one of these days when I am in a better financial position.
  12. How do you feel towards people that own the e-book, physical book (hardback), audiobook, and the mass market paperback (when its available)? Can the Bourgeoisie Sanderson fan and the Proletariat Sanderson fan live in peace together?
  13. The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey The legend of the galactic Heroes book series by Tanaka. The Culture series (Start with The Player of Games) by Banks
  14. So pleace correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like each oath that a Radiant makes (five total) its kind of like reaching another level of Super Saiyan (gain more strength and power). The first oath obviously gives you a lot of power and strength where before there is only hints of it. It seems like in level two and three unlock further atributes (Szeth is now given permission the practice Division, Dalinor combining all three realms, Kaladin shaking off the shackles from past trangressions etc). After Oath four you get magical armor. With the fifth it almost is like godhood where you become what your order values once (going off of the Skybreakers and becoming the law after the fifth oath). What do you guys think?
  15. Dalinar for overcoming so much pain and his "natural man". Navani was has so much quiet strength. Shallan because I no longer hate her and she really grew on me this book. Teravangian was really interesting because I look at him now as the Denethor (LOTR reference) of the series. They both started off as good, but got a good look at the enemy strength and just kind of gave up hope of overcoming their advesary. Denthor with his palantiri and Teravengian with the Diagram.
  16. A man with strong convictions that didn't shrink away from doing what, he thought, was best for Alethkar
  17. I find all of the Stormlight books to be extremely slow...so to answer your question yes but no more than the others. As I mentioned in another thread one must approach Stormlight with the proper mindset; these are books that move at a almost glacial pace at times, that strengths are worldbuilding, character development, and cosmere easter eggs. I will tell you that this may be the most intense "Sanderson avalanche" yet!
  18. I guess it depends on the person. I personally feel that a person new to fantasy or a low level reader needs to work there way up to series like these. A person new to fantasy may not know things like: 1. If its important it will be brought up again. 2. Sometimes you will not understand everything about the world at first. It will be explained eventually. I think people are afraid they might get frustrated early with a series like this and give up on Stormlight or possibly the entire genre. If there was a thirteen year old that has read a few "intro" fantasy series like LOTR and seems to be pretty sharp than I say go ahead and give it a shot.
  19. New interview that you have to scroll down a bit to see the english translation. He answered my biggest question which was what style the Karsa books will be: Interviewer: Related to your writing style, how do you think it will be in the Toblakai Trilogy? More akin to “Memories of Ice”, “Fall of Light”, something in between or something new not previously used? For me these two books represent the range from all-plot to all-philosophy in your writing style, I use them as benchmark when describing your books to other readers. SE: Good question. My sense of how the Karsa novels will be written (at the moment) is that it will be a return to a more linear style, with possibly fewer POV’s than is my usual wont. This should make the books tighter and possibly quicker-paced. That said, I’ll know more once I start writing it. I can only hope that he remains true to his word and sticks with his planned approach to this trilogy. http://www.thecrippledblog.com/2017/11/intervista-esclusiva-steven-erikson.html?m=1
  20. @Briar King I'm pretty sure the plan is for him (Ken Liu) to release book three in Fall of 2018...I am really excited to see how it turns out. I emailed Ken Liu and he told me it that book three will end with a complete story, but that he has ideas for other stuff to do in that world depending on if his stuff sells well enough that his publisher wants/allows him to write more in that setting. The closest thing I have found to Grace of Kings way of telling a story is The Legend of the Galactic Heroes by Tanaka. This series is a huge deal in Japan and they have 5 of 10 translated into English with more coming soon. If the title of the series is turn off then don't let it be. This is basically The Prussian Wars in outer space and is a great series so far!
  21. I don't know if this helps or not, but I have found that you really have to approach Stormlight Archives with a certain mindset. These are not tightly plotted books that quickly move the story along. These books are all about loosing yourself in the world, getting to know characters (and seeing their development), and finding how it all relates to the cosmere. If I recall correctly you are currently reading Grace of Kings by Liu...these two series couldn't be more different, (in terms of pacing) but I enjoy both for different reasons.
  22. I'm not a gamer, but had always wanted to play Skyrim. A friend was getting rid of their x box 360 so I got a used copy of the game and played it. The game is absolutely amazing and you could probably spend the rest of your life playing it and still not discover everything you can do. I liked playing the game as a mage with destruction magic; I vanquished my foes with fire in one hand and lightning in the other. I beat the main quest and several of the smaller ones, but had to give up the game...I felt like it was starting to take over my life. Tons of fun though!
  23. I had so much fun with Deadhouse Landing I decided to give the rest of Esslemonts books, outside of The Path to Ascendancy, a shot (I had previously read Night of Knives, Return of the Crimson Guard and Stonewielder). I am 50 pages into Knight of Knives and my impression is that it is really raw. The author is trying to find his voice and it shows. It's not bad, but man has he come a long way! My goal is to finish through Assail and to leave my thoughts as I finish each book.
  24. Apologies if this has already been posted, but I thought there were some interesting responses that Brandon gave including how his parents reacted to him getting involved with Dungeons and Dragons. I also thought it was interesting how he mentioned there are safety valves in place to prevent this series from expanding beyond his projected ten books. Here is the article: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/blog/sci-fi-fantasy/brandon-sanderson-discusses-past-future-stormlight-archive/
  25. @Ookla the peer-pressuredThis one is pretty controversial but, Qdoba IS THE BEST RESTERAUNT EVER!!! Fixed it for you
