Actually, I asked Elbereth about this last turn, and she said this:
-
Telar was heading home from a psychology course when he heard his name. The wind was blowing some pieces of a conversation from further down the street over to him. He strained to hear more. "...Pike's been quite helpful to that new student..." "... Wonder if he's hiding something...trying to get in people's good graces..." "...Skindancer?" Telar couldn't believe what he was hearing. Someone was thinking he might be a skindancer because he'd been trying to be helpful? That was just... no, not unbelievable. He remembered the introductory speech of the master physicker for the basic psychology course. 'The human mind might seem complex and mysterious, but through proper study the cause of every stray thought and surprising act can be determined. In the field of psychology, you'll learn about this to help those troubled by problems of the mind.' Telar quickly leafed through his book on psychology. He was pretty sure he had read about something that could cause these students to suspect him. There, on page 568. "Hunger-induced paranoia". Now if he could just get them to eat a good meal, he'd be sure they'd stop worrying about him. ...On second thought, maybe telling them that they needed to eat more would be counter-productive. Telar sighed and walked on towards the inn. He just hoped this wouldn't turn into trouble for him. Anyway, don't worry about me having gotten at tuition raise because of my activity in PM's. I'd somehow managed to post even more in the thread (no Lopen, I'm sure you counted correctly, no need to double-check). Wait, how come you lost EP if you where staying at the Pony? You only had 1 vote last turn, if I'm not mistaken, which the pony would have cancelled out. You are aware that lodgings are per term, not per turn, right? If you indicated you wanted to switch to the pony, that'll go in next turn, not this one. Also, @Amanuensis, it's a shame to see you bowing out of the game, but as usual RL stuff comes first.

Nope, the first wave of elevations occurs at the end of this turn.
-
You've got a point there, though since there are almost no available actions on C1, I still think it wasn't too useful to have that particular lynch.

Telar hated writing letters, as he was never able to communicate what he actually wanted to say, so in the end he just stuck with the same old platitudes. With a sigh, he grabbed a new sheet of paper to make a clean copy. He wouldn't be able to do much better than he already had before the course on basic psychology would start. He'd hear all kinds of stories about students cracking under the strain of studying here, so he already knew he'd be disliking this course as well. Why did everything having to do with human welfare have to be so gruesome? @Paranoid King, could you explain some more why you thought it was necessary for you to spread some votes around to lighten your tuition? Your plan for everyone to vote wasn't necessarily bad, but because you presented it about halfway through the turn, there was little chance for everyone to weigh in on it. This has resulted in three people getting taken on the horns, and two of them having gotten lashes. Why was it necessary that you immediately tried to implement your plan, rather than giving people a turn to discuss it so tat it could be implemented in a way that actually spread the risk around?

Actually, bringing more people up would have reduced the risk of RNG getting someone into trouble (if you're splitting 40 points randomly over 10 people, the risk of anyone getting 5 or more is less than if you're splitting over 8). I was actually somewhat suspicious of the way you brought that up last turn, but I doubt you'd have attracted attention to it again if it was an elim ploy to seem active but abstain from voting. I'm staying at the golden pony for at least the rest of this turn, so if an Edema Ruh does not have a suspicion to vote on, I can take 1 vote without suffering consequences. This offer does not extend past the Edema (or caeldish commoners). I'll put RP up in a bit. Edit: Also, @Elbereth, the four elevation ranks are E'lir>Re'lar>el'the> master. However, can you get more than 4 elevations (for example, 2 elevations in 1 field, and 3 in another)? Edit2: also, since the masters got the lists of EP from the end of last turn, and make a decision this turn, does it only affect last turns EP? Say I've put 2 EP in a field, and put 5 more this turn, and I also get elevated in that field this turn, will I have 5 EP left in that field, or 2?

Long Game (3)2: Pulling on Strings
DeTess replied to Orlok Tsubodai's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Hey guys, good game. I'd like to apologize to @Ornstein for killing him. At that point we where convinced that the coinshot was a new(er) player, and we where ruling them out through bronze-spike seeks and kills. If it makes you feel any better, if we'd figured out we where looking at the wrong group of players earlier, the game might just have gone quite differently. I'm still dissapointed that the soother who snapped when I got converted never stepped forward, as that would have resulted in some interesting chaos. -
Telar Pike was sitting under a tree on the university ground, reading a book and feeling tired. His first month at the university had been busy, with a lot of new experiences. It was raining now, but he couldn’t force himself to remain inside, and the tree was keeping him dry while he studied. He was currently working through a treatise about the use of language in petitions to the Aturan court, and how specific word choices could increase the chances of a request being granted. Dry stuff, mostly, but not uninteresting. At least it didn’t contain pictures and vivid descriptions of the sores, boils and rashes that where characteristic of the Caeldan flu. Telar sighed, then got up. He needed to go and get some food, as studying on an empty stomach didn’t work. He started walking back to the inn after packing his book away securely. He saw other people hurrying around, trying to get out of the rain, but the rain didn’t bother him. As he walked, he thought back on the events at the start of the month. In the first week or so, a lot of people were talking about those ‘Skindancers’, but as time went on that conversation topic seemed to disappear, and what he assumed was the usual gossip had returned. Telar had been happy to hear that, as in the first week he'd actually started to get worried. However, since no one talked about the creatures anymore, Telar assumed they where just some made-up phenomenon, or if they weren't, that the threat had passed.

I'd say we need more votes at the moment. I believe there are 10 people up for DP atm, provided the Golden pony doesn't block any of them, which means some people might still get in trouble. Depending on how many people are staying at the pony, it could get worse for those who aren't.
-
Remember that you have two votes that you can put on different people.
-
@Ornstein, @Amanuensis, @A Joe in the Bush, @Silverblade5, @Eolhondras, none of you have posted in the thread yet. Also, with the exception of Ornstein, none of you are Nobles, so it would be in your interest to be active. Also remember that EP doesn't carry over between turns. There are currently 9 people with votes on them. This means that they'll on average get 5 DP from the masters. Guess what? That's enough to get them all brought up on the horns. As I think it's somewhat unlikely all these votes will get retracted, if we don't want a bunch of people taking a bad hit in the first turn there should be more votes spread around. On that front, Arinian. I'm voting on you because you are among the players that would be least affected by a 2 talent increase in your tuition. We should also take into account that some of the people currently being voted on could be staying at the golden pony, which reduces their amount of votes by 1 for the purposes of DP (and so with 1 vote, they won't get considered at all)(this is correct, right, @Elbereth? I couldn't figure out anything else the 'secret vote' could be referring to). The people that could currently be staying there are: Stick, DA, PK, HH and Ornstein and Arinian. There is a minimum of 4 people that could get the master's 40 DP divided among them. At 10 DP each, that would give them all a 50% chance of lashings, while if they where to get more than 10, they'll start facing a risk of expulsion. Since the chance of everyone retracting their votes is quite small at this point, I'd urge everyone to make sure to vote instead. I'd recommend making sure all the nobles have 1 vote first, then the yllish commoners, then make sure the alturans have 2 votes each (as they can stay at the golden pony). After that, either vote on the caeldish or add second votes to yllish commoners, as they too can start at the golden pony (I know I did). Vote tally: Stick(1): Paranoid King DA(1): Paranoid King Magestar(1): Alvron Paranoid King(1): Alvron Alvron(1): Magestar Queensteph(1): Sart HH(1): DA Ornstein(1): HH Burnt spaghetti(1): Queensteph Arinian(1): Randuir

HH, you're a noble. You don't need those 5 jots from the tuition reduction. If you, for some reason, decide you do need it, might I suggest voting on someone else that hasn't got any votes instead (and preferable a noble), so that the chances of anyone being taken on the horns decreases? As your current action will only serve to harm the village, at no great gain to yourself. Unless you're a skindancer, of course.
-
As I understand it after Wilson's clarification, the masters wile each distribute 5 DP among those that have votes on them. NPC masters will do this randomly, player masters can pick. So if only 1 person gets voted on, the masters will together unload 40 DP on that person, enough to expel them twice over. If there are two people being voted on the expected value is that both get 20DP (still enough for expulsion). The more people get votes, the more this gets diluted. but if only a couple of votes go out for tuition reduction or poking people, these few unlucky individuals are going to be in a lot of trouble. At the moment, 6 people have votes (Magestar, Alvron, PK, stick, DA and Queensteph) which means each will get about 6-7 DP, which lands each of them on the Horns, with the accompanying serious tuition increase. In other words, if you are just voting randomly to decrease your tuition, but not everyone is doing the same, you're seriously hampering the power of some villagers(possibly an elim, but those chances with random votes are about 20% or less), as they lose either money, EP or both, and can get role-blocked due to lashings.

Let's see. if you post both cycles, send PM's both cycles and vote both cycles that's already a 2.5 talent reduction, If I'm not wrong. Spend half a cycle in Imre and try for talent pipes, and that's down another talent. Impress a master in the other turn (I suppose that means 'get elevated', right?) and you're down another talent. If you then just post 11 pieces of decent RP, you're done. It would take some planning and preparation, but it can be pulled off.

Agreed. However, it would also give us a confirmed skindancer, so I very much doubt they'd try that, especially as the person they got expelled could potentially just saunter of to the assassins guild and send someone after his/her voter. I am against voting D1, however, I'm going to vote anyway, namely on pk (@Paranoid King) He doesn't desperately need that tuition reduction, as he's an Yllish commoner, so I don't understand why he's started pushing for votes halfway through the first cycle. I'll remove that vote if he retracts his (or if enough people join the vote to move it into safe territory, though in that case there's no reason to move the vote). @Sart, I know you're Edema Ruh, so you actually do need any reduction you can get. However, if no one else joins the vote whoever you vote on is going to get into a lot of trouble, with a decent risk of expulsion. Since you're hurting for money, maybe try going for talent pipes ASAP? I don't know what your musical talent is, but even if you fail it gives a 1 talent reduction in your tuition. Edit: ninja'd by Alvron. Still, Alvron, I'd appreciate it if you could watch the thread, and if not enough votes get cast, retract your vote ebfore you get someone expelled for 5 jots.

Yep, it seems so. I should have checked again before hitting post.

It was 1 day and 9 hours half an hour back.

@Elbereth, I just noticed that the countdown timer is for 48 hours. As it says everywhere that the cycles is 36 hours (with 12 hours between cycles), would it be better to have a timer till the end of the cycle, instead of till the start of the new one? Or am I mistaken about how this works? Also, I'd like to ask everyone that has only posted RP so far to also try and put up some game discussion(even if it is in the form of more RP, like Hael's contributions have been). Pure RP is very nice, but usually doesn't help too much with getting a read on someone. I'd also like to hear some people's opinions on filing complaints on C1. Given that getting someone brought on the horns will not give us any information regarding the victims alignment, and the chances of hitting an elim are no larger than in any other game, I'm inclined to go with a no-vote policy for this first cycle unless someone says or does something really suspicious. However, I can also imagine that it can be really rough on the Edema Ruh (and Caeldish commoners to a lesser degree) to miss out on those 5 jots. Plus, there might be some part of the rules I've overlooked that makes bringing someone up on the Horns early more important than I might have realized. ------------------- Telar flopped down on his bed, feeling exhausted. And also still hungry. He’d missed the Chancellor’s announcement (and dinner), but there was enough talk about the speech among the students that he was able to piece the gist of it together. Apparently the Chancellor thought that everyone should think on the philosophical question of the meaning of life. Also, there was something about ‘skindancers’. Everyone Telar heard talking about them was either afraid or dismissive of them, so he guessed it was some kind of hazing ritual. Well, whatever would happen, would happen. His first courses had been interesting, though also somewhat disturbing. Telar was wondering whether they intentionally taught physicking after dinner to ensure prospective surgeons obtained strong stomachs. He didn't really want to become a surgeon anyway, but he'd promised his parents that he'd follow those courses. "You'll go to the university, and you'll learn something useful there, young man." Telar thought he'd done a passable approximation of his father's voice. He let out a sigh. Sure, he wasn't exactly dumb, and he had steady hands, but the thought of rooting around inside people's bodies and trying to put them back together made him queasy. No, he was far more interested in studies focused on the work of the mind. Linguisitics, rhetoric and logic where more his thing than trying to put broken people back together. "And why did they have to use such realistic pictures during an introductory course anyway?" Telar muttered to his ceiling. A fitful sleep came soon after, and Telar dreamed of people dancing around him without their skin on, while he desperately tried sow their skins back on.

Yes, you seem to be correct. On my initial read-through of the rules I thought that "each vote counts as a complaint lodged against that student, and every two complaints counts as one Discipline Point against the player if they’re taken On the Horns." meant that the NPC masters will distribute 1 DP to someone for every two votes they've gotten, but on a reread, it looks more like the complaints generate additional DP. Good thing you caught that, it has prevented me from making a bad mistake in the name of saving a few jots on my tuition.
-
Oops.

I've got some basic vote and math related observations. If you've already done a thorough read-through of the rules, this is mostly just a summary of the relevant things. There are 27 of us currently, which means there are 54 votes. The minimum amount of DP to get someone one the horns is 5 DP, which translates to 10 votes as long as there are only NPC masters. The minimum amount of votes needed to provide someone with a risk of expulsion is 22, for a total of 11 DP and a 10% risk of expulsion. To get the chance of Expulsion over 50%, a minimum of 30 votes is needed. For guaranteed Expulsion, a minimum of 40 votes is needed. However, Expulsion isn't like a traditional lynch, as it doesn't actually provide any information. The person affected even remains capable of taking actions, so an expulsed skindancer can still target visitors to Imre with sabotages, or hire assassins. I personally think the 'lashings' result is far more interesting, as it functions as a role-block. Lashes have an over 50% chance of occurring in the 8-14DP range, which translates to 16-28 votes. As there is no limit to how many people can be brought on the horns, this could in the earlier cycles be used on multiple suspected skindancers at once to reduce the actions available to them. Anyway, the village win condition is to kill all the skindancers. Kills can be made through the following powers/ items: Rhetoric and Logic: Law of contraposition (hard to pull of, but if you can get one skindancer to sabotage another...) Sympathy: Upgraded Mommets, Malfeasance to take someone down with you. Alchemy: Bone-tar (talk about a scorched earth response). Naming: Fire, Blood and Bone could be used for that, I think. Imre: an assassin can be hired to kill someone.

Alright. Good luck dealing with those events, whatever they are.

Alright. Does that apply for reductions as well? For example, you get 5 jots for RP, is that actually 2.5 jots? And does the post once in the thread reduction count per turn, per cycle or per game?

Telar Pike was sitting under a tree on the university ground, reading a book and feeling content. He’d managed to secure permission to join the University, and the term would start in a couple of days. For now, the weather was nice, and his book was interesting. It was the first part of an ancient Saga set in some far away land wracked by storms, telling the tale of a slave that managed to work his way up to become the captain of the King’s guard in a time of crisis. Telar was so engrossed in his book that it took him a while to realize that something was wrong, the first thing he noticed was that the sun had gone down, and that it was only thanks to a nearby light that he’d been able to continue reading. The second thing he noticed was that he was hungry. The third thing he noticed, and which removed any notion of the other two from his mind, was that a lot of students were headed for the student’s central auditorium. They were all dressed up as if the term was about to start as well. Confused, Telar got up. He was convinced it was still two days before the term was about to start, so he walked up to one of the students and asked what was going on. “The Chancellor wants to address us at the start of the term” one of the students told him. “But, the term isn’t due to start till the day after tomorrow.” Telar’s only got flat stares in return to his protest. “It’s not starting the day after tomorrow?” One of the students sighed and shook his head, then proclaimed in an imperious tone; “No, it’s not starting the day after tomorrow. Half the fields have lectures this evening, though given the specific requirements of Courses like artificing, Naming and physicking, I doubt you have to worry about that.” “Oh.” Telar couldn’t really say more than that. Instead he grabbed his novel and sprinted off to grab his books and other things he’d need. I wish this was just RP, but I'd managed to convince myself that this game started on Monday, not today. Anyway, I've got one last rules-related question*. In the document it says that the reductions and inflations for the tuition are 'averaged together'. Does this mean you get the average of them for the two turns (say I get a 2 talent reduction on the first, and a 3 talent reduction on the second, does this average to 2.5 talents) or are they added together? *Btw, if I say something I suspect will not be true, but that I'm not yet convinced is a lie either, will it trigger the lie-detector power?
