Ha! That would be brilliant. Seems believable enough for me, but be careful with that one chart. He pointed out that it's dated.

Well, I'm not seeing anything super convincing. Even "Alethela" doesn't look as good as it did at first (when I was using an old key). Of course, I guess it's definitely there allowing for extra lines. Unfortunately nothing else even seems close. Even some of them that are relatively simple don't seem to match one of the kingdom names. For reference, the Silver Kingdoms are: Aimia - "M" (or "Y M Y"?) Shin Kak Nish - "Sh N K K N Sh" Sela Tales - "S L T L S" Makabakam - "M K B K M" Valhav - "V L V" ("V L H V"?) Rishir - "R Sh R" Thalath - "Th L Th" Alethela - "L Th L" Natanatan - "N T N T N"

Ah, thanks. One question... Does that mean you believe (a) the orientation varies and seems arbitrary, (b) the orientation seems to matter but you can't see how, or (c) orientation does matter but doesn't vary (i.e. the up-to-date chart shows the ONLY correct form?)

@Harakeke, can you confirm the key I linked is fairly accurate? I assume the greyed out symbols aren't certain? Or just a general update on what you know so far about how glyphs work? Some of the details/discoveries seem to be buried in this thread. And now that I think about it... The glyphs on the "voidbinding chart" are probably NOT Alethi glyphs, are they? Wouldn't we expect them to be Dawnchant glyphs? Which means translating/confirming this theory about the Silver Kingdoms might be tricky... As far as I understand, that is possible. Though that one does seem... not quite right. If it IS two R's, they're crammed together. No room for an Sh or a Th...

This is the latest key I could find, presumably by @Harakeke? And... holy crap... check this out... The "voidbinding chart" glyph corresponding with Jezrien/Windrunners? Looks a LOT to me like "L TH L". Only thing that seems off is an extra line on the first L, right? And notice the "u" shaped portion at the top of the symbol? Looks a lot like your recent post about words that begin with vowels @Belzedar. This looks like "Alethela" to me. Could it be that the "voidbinding chart" symbols are the names of the Silver Kingdoms? If that's the case, how would the Truthwatcher/Paliah one go? Rishir?

Well, I think he's just really arrogant. Good question about Amaram. Considering how close they seem to be, I imagine they're working together pretty closely. And isn't there some scene where he makes a comment along the lines of "we did it, Gavilar!" Though I guess that doesn't mean Amaram doesn't have his own "style". Or that he was fully aware of everything Gavilar knew.

Not necessarily. My interpretation is that the ship normally takes off by means of either (1) a mechanical device (the main ship wasn't operating, which is why Wax was needed) and/or (2) an ettmetal contraption (i.e. one of the "allomantic grenades" using steel). These solutions are more elegant (in my opinion) than requiring one of the crew to use A-steel, swallow metal, and "manually" push the thing away.

How funny would it be if the first Windrunner to join Kaladin is none other than Gaz?

They're in the same general time frame and at some point in the future end of the Cosmere. So, after Stormlight 10 and Mistborn Era 3, but definitely before Sixth of the Dusk.

Tanavast said, "Odium has killed me," in the text and there's this WoB about Honor being Splintered. Seems pretty unlikely to me that Odium specifically killed Tanavast without splintering Honor, and then Honor was splintered for some other reason. Not disagreeing with everything here- just that one assertion.

Can Skybreakers choose which crime/criminal to pursue?

kolo? = understand? -
I'm not convinced he intends to let the Parshmen (or at least the Parshendi) be voidbringer-ed. My interpretation is that he has a plan to protect them or something. The whole point of the alliance is "Hey, let's work together through this. I'd rather have you on our side, united, than as our enemy." And this voice is trying to stop what Gavilar is doing. So it's one bad versus another bad (possible) unless Gavilar or the voice is on the right track. Well put @maxal, interesting insight that I haven't been able to read yet. I don't think Gavilar is necessarily putting destination before journey... He just has a twisted view of what the journey part looks like.

Why did the Alethi merchant not accept Odium's payment? He used a voided check!

@Pagerunner, have you seen this while flipping back through Reddit?

No, I just meant that there's no mention of a gem inside the sphere. Maybe sphere is completely being used in the monetary sense, and a gem at the center is implied... It's just bothering me that it hasn't been mentioned. With such a bizarre artifact, I feel like a gem would be described if it were visible. Maybe it's just swallowed up by the darkness.

The Nightwatcher and Parshmen [Oathbringer Prologue Spoilers]
Jofwu replied to Blightsong's topic in Stormlight Archive
No, I'm just referring to the simple fact that he "presented the stratagem" by which the Voidbringers could be neutralized. I guess that could be a matter of like... Honor or the Heralds speaking to him and saying, "Hey, I've got this other plan. You don't have to kill them." And then they just all sort of sat back and watched, or assisted somehow. But tied together with Gavilar's assertion about his ancestors capturing this spren, it sounds to me more like Melishi came up with this plan and executed it himself (perhaps with the other bondsmiths, and perhaps assisted by other Radiants in some way). Lots of assumptions in all of that, but it just seems like the most likely interpretation to me.- 11 replies

The Nightwatcher and Parshmen [Oathbringer Prologue Spoilers]
Jofwu replied to Blightsong's topic in Stormlight Archive
Now that is an interesting idea. It totally makes sense that Gavilar would think Odium is a "very ancient, very important" spren. That's precisely what a not-100%-Cosmere-aware Rosharan would call a Shard. If your WoR epigraph is about Melishi coming up with a way to turn Voidbringers into Parshmen, then I'm not sure if it fits.Gavilar also implies that his ancestors were responsible for capturing this spren. I'm under the impression that Odium's capture was pretty much all Honor's doing. But an interesting idea anyways...- 11 replies

Cosmere University Paper Topics/Ideas
Jofwu replied to blakismaximus22's topic in General Brandon Discussion
If it were me... Stormlight books are too big for a brief summary. I'd do Alloy of Law and talk about the different perceptions of "right and wrong" (civil law versus moral law and how the characters take those into their own hands). Something like that. -
Seems like most people earlier in the thread were in favor of this. I liked term "voidlight" that someone used. But I'm not convinced entirely... Why is it always just a "sphere"? No mention of a gemstone at the center? I feel like there should be mention of a gemstone at the center if it's Stormlight-like Odium-Investiture. Furthermore, what does this "voidlight" do? I didn't get a sense that the Stormform Listeners were using something similar to stormlight, for example. I think it was somebody on Reddit who suggested that the sphere ended up in Venli's hands, and that it was partly what helped her to discover Stormform (either because studying it informing her in some way or just by inspiration of some sort). I really like that idea. Somebody was comparing the ability to speak in the rhythms to the way Ruin spoke. I'm not convinced it has to be a Shard speaking. My first thought was that an Unmade is responsible... But I can't think of any support for this. My next thought was the Heralds. This is based on what the Herald (probably Kalak) says in Jasnah's prologue: “I don’t like this. What we’ve done was wrong. That creature carries my lord’s own Blade. We shouldn’t have let him keep it. He—”. How did they speak to Klade? Who knows, but they're Heralds. If anyone would know, it's them. The Heralds were obviously up to something that night. Or some of them at least. And we have plenty of reason to believe that they don't want Gavilar to succeed. They're the ones who started the present stalemate after all, and Nale (for one) is trying pretty hard to preserve it. This is the most logical answer I can think of. My backup guess is Taravangian. It's not hard to be suspicious of him. It wouldn't be surprising if he knew how to speak to Listeners in the rhythms, and there's plenty of reason to assume he knew of Szeth. Probably not hard to think of a motive either. (I'm assuming the Diagram exists at this point- can't remember if that's the case.)

Guesses for future prologue perspectives?
Jofwu replied to PatronOfRot's topic in Stormlight Archive
He's definitely a herald, based on his conversation with Nale in Jasnah's prologue. He's definitely a man, so that cuts the number in half. We know Nale, and he's with Nale. So it's not Nale. Taln is presumably in Damnation or on Braize or whatever. And the man's talk about "we weren't supposed to get worse" implies he's one of the Heralds who stayed. So it's not Taln. The "my lord's own blade" line suggests it isn't Jezrien (who is the "lord"). You could argue that it's Jezrien speaking of Honor... But there's good support that Jezrien is the beggar, including Nale's line in Lift's interlude which suggests Jezrien isn't doing so hot. ("May he lead in wisdom. If he ever stops drooling.”) In my opinion this VERY STRONGLY implies that the man is Kalak or Ishar. Evidence against Ishar? Ishar's depiction gives him a massive beard and a bald head while Kalak looks relatively plain. I think you would expect Jasnah or Szeth to comment on the man's appearance if there was anything notable about it. And from Edgedancer... Evidence in favor of Kalak? We know from the Prelude that Kalak has a lot of respect for Jezrien, and views him as a king. Thus the "my lord" strongly fits what we know for him. I would also argue that his personality in both prologues (kind of timid? nervous?) fits the little we know of Kalak from the Prelude. So between Kalak and Ishar the evidence isn't STRONG one way or the other. But it certainly suggests Kalak more than Ishar. -
Assuming that Dalinar saw the same things (which I think is logical), I still don't think you can compare their reactions. Dalinar barely saw all of the visions and made sense of them before it was too late for him to actually DO anything at all. Dalinar did literally nothing about the visions, except perhaps a confused, misguided attempt to unite the Highprinces. The sense I get from the epilogue is that Gavilar has been getting these visions for a fairly long time. He's been researching means to contain these "gods". He's planing to ally with the Parshendi against this threat, which implies he's considered steps that need to be taken in order to keep them from being taken. What makes you think he planned to unleash DOOM on the world for no good reason? You seem to believe that his plan was to bring back the Everstorm and then watch the world burn. That's not what he's talking about at all. He's talking about weapons that can be used to fight back. He's talking about containing and dealing with the threat. It's not just, "Let's open Pandora's Box and cross our fingers that mankind survives the Desolation that follows." You also seem to believe that the Everstorm wasn't going to come one way or another. Guess what? Gavilar died, and it came anyways. Thanks to meddling Listeners who were being manipulated, mind you. What if Gavilar wasn't going to release the 'gods' for another 10 or 15 years? When mankind is more prepared. After he's had time to weed out the use of Parshmen for example. I'm not saying Gavilar is definitely clean. I'm saying that you're jumping to a LOT of conclusions about what he was trying to do and how it was going to work out.

Ah, whoops. Basically yes. Should read: 3. Sprinkle short glimpses of battle with Parshendi before/after Dalinar and during bridge runs. Basically, just battle scenes sprinkled in wherever it fits alongside the primary narratives.

This is such a fantastic theory! I'm skeptical about completely immortal... but a remarkably long lifespan is good enough for me. Makes a lot of sense, and it would be a perfect way for him and MeLaan to work out better.
