Anyone Here a Fan of The Dresden Files?
Sunbird replied to Quadrophenia's topic in Entertainment Discussion
@Quadrophenia Re: swearing vs violence, yeah, I'm aware that it's a bit illogical. I think part of my aversion to profanity is that I'm afraid if I expose myself to too much of it, I'll start using it myself, and I don't want to go there. I'm not worried about the same thing with regards to violence. As for the gang rape... If that had been explicitly described, it probably would've been too much for me. But I could handle thinking about it from a distance when it was only implied. Sometimes other forms of especially gruesome violence make me flinch, but I've largely been desensitized to it by movies like LOTR and Jurassic Park and books like Dan Wells's "I Am Not a Serial Killer." -
Am I weird for liking to read while sitting at a table or desk? Otherwise I like to slouch on one end of my couch, and I like to have music. (There is almost no situation when I don't like to have music.)

Anyone Here a Fan of The Dresden Files?
Sunbird replied to Quadrophenia's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I've had The Lies of Locke Lamora series recommended to me before (and I think the swear in the series name actually might not be censored on the Shard), but after reading the blurb and some reviews, I decided to pass--largely because of the reported profanity content. Pat Rothfuss's review says, "In Lies, Lynch's low-life street thugs are vulgarian virtuosos." Rothfuss uses it as a compliment, but it's a red warning flag for me. Also See this answered question on GoodReads (Feel free to think of me as a hypocrite for turning my nose up at Locke Lamora but liking Dresden, which also makes use of f-bombs, but I daresay Jim Butcher has yet to cram 185 f-bombs into a single Dresden book... That's like one every other page for your average fantasy novel.) I'm a huge fan of The Aeronaut's Windlass, though. I think it's probably my favorite out of all of Butcher's books that I've read. (Namely, all currently-released mainline Dresden Files, Codex Alera, and The Aeronaut's Windlass. Oh, and his Spider-Man tie-in novel, The Darkest Hours.) -
Anyone Here a Fan of The Dresden Files?
Sunbird replied to Quadrophenia's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I'm all up to speed on Dresden except for Working for Bigfoot, which isn't really part of the main series so I don't feel any urgent need to read it. I think my two favorite books are Dead Beat and Skin Game. I find Butters rather adorkable, and one of my favorite funny moments in the series was Harry's "POLKA WILL NEVER DIE" pep talk. Plus riding a zombie T-rex around Chicago is just plain epic. I loved Skin Game for a lot of reasons... Heists are a plot device I'm generally fond of; same with mystical tests. And the surprise at the end! Awesome. Of the secondary characters, I think Thomas is my favorite. I get a kick out of people assuming he is gay--or, by extension, assuming Harry is gay when they go places together. And he's a total badchull in a fight. -
"Doors are for people with no goats." - Derek Landy "In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of goats very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move." - Douglas Adams "Don't pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in goats." - Andy Warhol "If you are allergic to a thing, it is best not to put that thing in your mouth, particularly if the thing is goats." - Lemony Snicket "People who deny the existence of goats are often eaten by goats. From within." - Ursula K LeGuin "Say no to death goats. Another good motto." - Brandon Mull

I think I'm missing a joke here. The only Wilson-related reference I can think of is the volleyball from Cast Away, and that doesn't seem to have anything to do with handprints painted on legs...? In other random news, I was sorting the mail at the library today and we received a magazine that smelled strongly of black pepper.

Uhh @AngelEy3 you really shouldn't eat pewter IRL. It contains lead.
-
@Quiver What Kaymyth said. If somebody started smoking in my car without permission (and I'd never give permission), I'd kick them out then and there. It's inconsiderate to endanger other people's health to feed your own destructive addiction.
-
@bleeder I can understand driving to get between neighborhoods, especially if there's a high-traffic road on the way, but driving from house to house is silly.
-
@Kaymyth I always buy some chocolate and some non-chocolate candy for the trick or treaters because I'm thinking of peanut allergies as well.

@Dankness Ascendant You were right in your original assumption; I am a girl. There just aren't many female characters that appeal to me as cosplay costumes, and that pic in particular makes it hard to tell because I'm wearing a jacket made for men that obscures my body shape. Plus my hair is short and boyish. So don't feel bad; plenty of other people have looked at me and thought I was a guy based on my appearance. Maybe I should make a post in The Voice Thread... My singing voice is very obviously feminine.
-
@Dankness Ascendant I know. We were just joking about possible punishments for people who refused to speak Australian English once the USA was conquered.
-
This amuses me. Actually, languages in general amuse me. That's one reason why I always enjoy going to my linguistics class that's taught by an Australian professor. He's always telling us fun things about how Australian English is different from American English and making jokes about how if Australia took over the world, everybody would be forced to eat Vegemite daily.

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Sunbird replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
Argh. I just realized, at almost 2:30 AM, that I forgot to turn in two HW assignments that were due online at midnight. I guess that's what I get for putting them off until Halloween. -
In the US, I've seen powdered drink mixes that you can add to water to get like, lemonade or fruit punch or whatever. I think I've seen little things that have flavor additives in liquid form too, and those must be pretty concentrated because the container isn't very big. But no, I've never heard of a similar thing called squash.

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Sunbird replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
*hugs* Would it help to listen to a song called "Weasel Stomping Day" by Weird Al? Stomp those brain weasels! -
I bought 2 medium-large bags of candy for the trick-or-treaters, and our doorbell only rang like 4 times all night. So now I have almost 2 whole bags of candy to myself.

I must see this Nightblood costume. Or at least tell us how you made yourself look like a big black sword. I went to my classes today as the Tenth Doctor: navy-blue pinstripe pants and suit jacket, collared button-up shirt, red necktie, red Converse, and 3D glasses over top of my prescription eyeglasses since I can't see worth crem without them. I had my sonic screwdriver in my pocket (It lights up and makes the noise!), as well as a little wallet thing I sewed out of brown felt to hold my psychic paper. People at my university are pretty enthusiastic about dressing up for Halloween, so I brought my good camera along too and took pictures of other people's costumes when I could. Costumes I saw today: Giselle from the movie Enchanted, 3 different Belles from Beauty and the Beast (2 in the blue dress and 1 in the elaborate gold ballgown), lots of Hogwarts students, Iron Fist, Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service, Indiana Jones, Carl and Russell from Up, Ana from Frozen, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider from Tangled, Captain America, 2 Reys (Star Wars Episode VII), several generic Jedi, Mario, one of these guys from "Attack on Titan," San from Princess Mononoke, Jasmine from Aladdin, the Swedish Chef from The Muppets, and Meg from Hercules. After class I came home to hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters, but we only got like 3 or 4 groups. That was disappointing. But on the bright side, now I have a bunch of candy left over. Also, I changed my display name and profile pic to be appropriately spookier.

Watched the second Underworld movie last night and was rather amused to recognize three actors from Doctor Who. Bill Nighy, who was the museum curator in the episode with Vincent van Gogh; Tony Curran, who was Vincent van Gogh in the same episode; and Derek Jacobi, who was the Master before he opened his pocket watch and turned into John Simm.

ENTIRE COSMERE OPTIONED FOR MOVIES
Sunbird replied to PallonianFire's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Even after reading all 5 pages of this thread, I'm still in the "unimaginably happy and ecstatic" phase. Yeah, okay, I don't know how the studio is going to pull this off, but Brandon says he trusts them AND he gets to be executive producer, so I think the future of the Cosmere Cinematic Universe is looking bright. -
You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Sunbird replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
When you have a dream that Brandon invited you to his house for some odd reason, and when he told you, "I live in American Fork," you had to stop yourself from saying, "I know" like a creeper. -
Oh, the random stuff I think about when I have things to do but would rather muse about the workings of the universe...

Rude! You've probably heard the saying, "ASSUME makes a [chull] out of U and ME," but in this case it was definitely just her who was made a chull. This.
