Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Sunbird replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
I was asking that as a followup question to my previous one about why Twi calls her coworker Spongebob when talking about him on the Shard. @TwiLyghtSansSparkles Does he have an annoying laugh too? He sounds like the kind of person who would. -
As funny as this is, I can also see "bowtruckle" being shortened to "truckle," which sounds a little less silly.

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!

I've been wondering for a while--of all the ways you could've chosen to refer to Spongebob!Coworker on the Shard, why'd you pick Spongebob? Is it because of his immaturity? -
Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!

@Silverblade5, my heart has been breaking for you and your friend as I've read your posts about her struggles and your valiant and steadfast support. I'm not sure how much stock you put in religion, but I have been praying daily for you both. I wish I had some sage advice to impart, but all I can really do is echo what Twi said--keep talking to her and encouraging her and letting her know that you value her as a person and as a friend, and YOU would be devastatingly sad if she died. -
I went and voted early yesterday and was peeved when one of the questions on the ballot asked if I was in favor of amending the state constitution to modify the oaths taken by elected officials, but it neglected to say anything about how the oath would be modified if the proposal succeeded.

@Oversleep There's a word for that feeling when a word is on the tip of your tongue but you just can't remember it: lethologica.

Whether it's the best thing or the worst thing depends on whether that spike has impaled someone before. Not so great if you're the first impalee.

I've found Castle, starring Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame, to be highly enjoyable. The show has at least 3 of the 4 qualities you said you were looking for--all except possibly "social issue." (Although Nathan Fillion's character is divorced and has a teenage daughter, so maybe that counts.)

"Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran. I love me some classic rock.

I feel proud of myself. I was able to produce the sound correctly from reading the text description before listening to the audio clip. Thank you, phonetics class, for teaching me all that pronunciation jargon! Also, speaking of people looking at you funny for your pronunciation... You know the theme music from 2001: A Space Odyssey? The actual title of that piece is "Also Sprach Zarathustra," which is German for "Thus Spake Zarathustra." Whenever I say the German name of the piece, I pronounce it according to German rules of pronunciation because it's become a hard-to-break habit after taking 5 semesters of German in college. So it sounds like "all-ZOE shpra[x] tsah-rah-TOOST-rah" where the sound I've noted as [x] is a back-of-the-throat noise that sounds a little like a cross between an "H" sound, gargling, and a person imitating a cat's hiss. And people always look at me weird when I say the song title like that. XD

Well, if you're speaking Spanish, you should pronounce it that way, yes. But if you say "yamma" to a native English speaker they're going to look at you funny, because English doesn't just borrow, it assimilates.

Good idea, Twi! I hadn't thought of that. It'll probably be cheaper in the long run than buying disposable bowls, and definitely more convenient than Tupperware. Ok, recipes! Chili con carne: New England clam chowder: I just thought of another recipe that makes several servings and would be convenient (and warm) to take for lunch. It's a Japanese curry, so you can usually only find the sauce mix at Asian import stores, but it's soooo delicious. Here's what the box of sauce mix looks like: How to make Vermont curry:

Ok @mattig89ch I'll copy the chili and chowder recipes over here once I get back to my laptop. Copypasta on my mobile is kinda difficult. As for canned soup, most plastic food containers (like Tupperware and other similar things) are microwave safe. Just find one with a watertight lid, or bring the can and can opener along with the open-topped Tupperware so you can dump the soup out of the can before microwaving. Or you could use disposable paper or Styrofoam bowls, since those are generally also safe.

If you're looking for vampire books, I can recommend plenty of better books/series than the ones I'm reading right now. I kinda just needed a "fix." XD For example, Melissa F Olson's new-ish book from Tor, Nightshades, was pretty awesome IMO. Heck of a cliffhanger ending, though. Some of my favorite books with vampires: Written in Red, by Anne Bishop (first in her Others series; also includes shapeshifters and other supernatural stuff) The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, by Holly Black (a standalone based on a short story) The Greyfriar, by Clay and Susan Griffith (first in a series) The Immortal Rules, by Julie Kagawa (first in the Blood of Eden trilogy) Skulduggery Pleasant, by Derek Landy (first in a series. The vampires aren't the main focus here, but they exist.) Tantalize, by Cynthia Leitich Smith (first in a series) A Night of Blacker Darkness, by Dan Wells (This one is...different, to say the least, and unfortunately only available in the USA as an ebook. I guarantee you'll laugh at it, though.)

The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
Sunbird replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
When my family went to Disneyland, we encountered a guy dressed as Jack Sparrow who was not only doing an excellent impression of the character, including the slightly drunken swaying walk, but was also an uncanny Johnny Depp lookalike. We took photos with him. -
It's "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore. Just realized that info was in the original meme. The original song has some strong language, so if you want to hear the song but not the cussing, I suggest the cover by Postmodern Jukebox. And if you enjoyed that, check out William Shakespeare's Star Wars by Ian Doescher if you haven't already. (I've praised it often enough here on the Shard, that's for sure! XD)

Hahaha. I approve! I think you would like this post that I found on Facebook recently: Also, I found the real-life Kaz.

Uh, I think I can name a few. 1. Cork (Ireland) 2. Clare (Ireland, but not totally sure of spelling) 3. Liverpool? 4. County Down (from that song "Star of the County Down" lol) 5. Gloucester? 6. Athenry? Most of these guesses are coming from my knowledge of Irish folk songs. XD

Sorry for double post. Mobile is haVing seizures with quotes. What I was trying to say was this: Same thing happened to me in class today. A girl sitting immediately behind me started eating a Starburst or a piece of taffy or something and chewing it like a cow, I kid you not: mouth wide open and making the most hideous slurping and smacking noises. After grinding my teeth through a few min of that and hoping she'd stop on her own, I finally turned around and said, "Whatever you're eating, could you please chew it with your mouth closed so it doesn't make that smacking noise?" And she looked at me like I'd just grown a second head. I can't think of any way I could've possibly phrased it any more politely, but she acted like I'd just asked her to stop thinking so loud. She stared at me for a few seconds before saying, "okaaayyyy..." as if humoring a crazy person just to make them calm down.

UGH YES. Basically this same thing happened to me

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Sunbird replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
@Glamdring804 I don't, but I was thinking that @Elenion might since you both have a Sanderfan for a calc teacher. -
LOL I know of least one person on the board who hasn't: @mattig89ch has set his member title to "He Who Will Not Read Mistborn." As for me, I'm kind of going on a vampire binge ATM. Found a Dracula prequel series and read the first book, Covenant with the Vampire, as well as Once Bitten, Twice Shy, the first book in a UF series by Jennifer Rardin. Currently working on the sequel to Once Bitten and I have the second of the Dracula prequels ready to go on my Kindle when I finish.
