Feruchemicalities and Radiantalities.
Treamayne replied to Through the Living Wrath's question in Cosmere Q&A
Clarification - most fans beleive that it can be tapped. WoBs: People have asked questions assuming that a Trueself can tap, and Brandon has not corrected the assumption - but all answers have been RAFOs, so we do not have any actual evidence that an Aluminum Metalmind can be tapped. We expect these answers in Era 3. . . -
Layers of The Cognitive Realm + Cognitive Questions
Treamayne replied to CoderDrag0n8's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Look at what does glow in Roshar's Shadesmar (Souls) - Metals glows in Scadrial's Shadesmar because of how Ruin and Preservation created life meaning that Souls and Metals are inherently Connected. The basic form of any given Shardworld's Shadesmar will be based on the Cognitive Perception of the planet and their collective population. On Scadrial, Mist represents the whole planet because it is ubiquitous - therefore uncondensed Shadesmar (high thought density) is represented by Mist On Roshar, Gemstones and Beads are the most ubiquitous and so the same efect results in the bead oceans Note: In the TLM MeLaan Epilogue - the local Shadesmar of the scene is a clear liquid of some kind (Which, when combined with her Sho-del guide may imply that event takes place on or near U-Tol (from Yumi and TSM)) The allegory is not about "height" - if you notice how when Kel visits Lake Luthadel, the ground becomes a hard Obsidian-like material. Likewise, when Kel visits the Ire he has traversed the majority of the Entire Scadrian Solar System (in Physical Realm Parallel) - areas where less life exists and/or where people are not "thinking about" an area allows the Cognitive Realm in that area to "condense" - which means that each step in the cognitive realm would be travelling the equivalent of hundreds to thousands of km in the physical realm. This is why a caravan can walk from one planet to another in weeks or months. WoBs: Hope that helps -
Bolded is correct - multiple lashings in one direction stack, Lashings in a new direction replace the previous direction. A good example is the RoW Fight Scene in Ch 6, as Kaladin uses repeated lashings in slightly different direction to create smooth turns. . .
-
@CalamityBorn So A Full lashing isn’t something you can change This is essentially what a lashing is: A ) First, it applies a force equal opposite to gravity, cancelling it out. B ) Second, it applies a force equal to gravity in the direction of the lashing. However, you can use relative Lashings - given some positive number x, which would be the modifier (i.e. A half lashing would have a x of 0.5) i) If x > 1, the magnitude of both forces is multiplied by b ii) Otherwise, only the force defined by B would by multiplied by x. Not entirely correct - there is no force applied that is opposite to the force of Gravity. The lashing is (temporarity) severing gravitational connection to the planet such that the lashing's effect is the only "gravity" that is affecting the person or thing. WoB: Additional WoBs (Mistborn Era 2 minor spoilers): If a Radiant were to get practiced enough with Surgebinding to be able to use two different lashings without the second cancelling the first (as the first WoP above says is possible with practice) then this should be possible since the amount of stormlight used in the lashing determines duration. The problem then becomes how fast you want it to act, because if you are using multiple lashings (for increased acceleration) then actually holding on to the object long enough to apply the different directions will be a problem. Hope that helps.

Have you read the Age of Fire trilogy (E. E. Knight - Dragon POV - Dragon Champion is Book 1). Blurb:
-
Welcome. Keep in mind that Isle of the Emberdark is related to Sixth of the Dusk (printed in Arcanum Unbounded and Shadows Beneath anthologies, also as a solo ebook - I prefer the Shadows Beneath version). I'm not entirely sure what you mean, so I will answer the two most likely interpretations: If you mean spoiler tags in a thread - there is info in the Sharder FAQ on this, but it is as simple either: Type your text, highlight it then click the "eye" icon Click the eye icon to make a spoiler tag, then type in the box that appears. If you mean topic titles - the key is to not relveal the spoiler in the title name. For example, in the Spoiler zone right now: Taravangian's Stability is acceptable as a title because taravangian has been part of the series since book 1 - however If I had named it (WaT Spoiler - highlight to read) "Retribution's Stability" (which is what is really being discussed) - that would have been a Spoiler Title that violate site policy Because topic titles appear on the main page when they have a new post - but the Spoiler in the title would ruin the story for people that see those titles but have not yet read WaT. Hope that helps

Welcome to the Shard. Please consider an Intro Post to let us know what you have or have-not read (whichever list is shorter). Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some useful forum info and tips. Aether of Night is the unpublished Sanderson Curiosity on the Aether homeworld (elements of the story were recycled into Mistborn Era 1, WoK, an other stories). It's the only Curiosity that has been approved for distribution through these forums. The request thread is here. It is a Word document, if you would prefer to convert it to an ePub, information on that process is available here. Also, in case it helps, please find the Admin's list of unpublished and free material here. Reputation is described in the Sharder FAQ, which also has links to other htreads discussing Reputation, Rep Levels and how they work. Hope that helps

Others have mentioned Hoid's known backstory, I'll add one WoB to that - But to answer your first question: Because Sanderson once tried to write Hoid's origin story (Liar of Partinel) and it did not work out well. So, with the Special Projects he decided he needed practice with Hoid's storytelling voice for when he gets to teh Dragonstell books (which will be about Hoid's origin and the Shattering) so he can have the best "voice" for a Hoid PoV series. WoB: None yet, Hoid started as the first clue that all of these series were connected (reading Elantris, then Mistborn and Warbreaker and seeing his name in all three was the connection clue). Dragonsteel, when we get there, will be his Origin Story. WoB: Hope that helps

Book discussion just happens in their respective sections. Cosmere discussion is for any topic covering two or more Shardworlds or general Realmatics Cosmere Q&A is for questions which may have definitive answers So that answer can be marked, and it is easy to look if a question has already been asked and answered Spoiler Zone is for whatever book(s) are currently in their spoiler period Otherwise each series/book has it's own section for discussing that book/series exclusively Main Page image:

One thing to keep in mind is that Returned and (likely) Yoki-Hijo are not just Cognitive Shadows, but Splinters. In Returned, the Divine Breath is a Splinter of Endownment, and the Heightening manifests from that, not from their status as a variety of Cognitive Shadow. Fused are not Splinters at all. Heralds are not Splinters (but wield one in the form of their Honorblade). YH we do not have a definitive answer on yet, but the implication based on evidence is that they were Splinters of Virtuosity before the Father Machine went active and killed everybody - the melding of the Splinter and the Cognitive Shadow allowed them to break free of Father Machine and manifest a (fake) Physical Realm body (I would suspect that the lack of Heightenings is because they are not inhabiting a real body like a Returned). Likewise, a Radiant Spren may be a Splinter, but also does not inhabit a true PR body.

Oh boy. At this point it's kind of a long list. The Coppermind is an excellent resource for overviewing it all, and even has a lot of in-depth stuff. Just be careful, since leaps of logic do pop up. If there isn't a source backing up a claim, or that source doesn't actually line up with the Coppermind entry, it's wrong. But otherwise, it's great. This is a great resource, though you may want to start with Jofwu's Cosmere 101. Another option (because finding the option that best fits your preferred learning style) is to use the Forum seach engine to read up on older threads already answering questions you may have. The Sharder FAQ has tips on using the very robust search tool that this forum has; so, for example, if you searched for Nahel and Luhel Bonds you would find an entire thread of Sharders answering questions and discussing that topic, with WoBs and References. Searching the Arcanum can also be useful (also covered in the Sharder FAQ) - for reading what Brandon has to say on topics such as: Keyword Matter search in #Realmatic theory tag for info on how Investiture is the third axis of reality (IRL Matter and Energy are the same and convert into one another - in the Cosmere Investiture is a third axis in this dynamic). Hope that helps

It does not have to be about concealing anything - it can simply be that he was (most likely) telling the story to people on First of the Sun (minor Shardworld for Sixth of the Dusk*) - and it's unlikely the information would mean anything to them, so too much detail is confusing. From an author's perspective, Sanderson probably wanted the question open for theories and provided just enough detail for Realmatic fans to quirk and eyebrow while keeping the book as "stand alone" as possible (so readers do not require having read Mistborn before Tress). *Implied by Tress Ch 24:

Exactly my point - it was "not a joke" that Fort is 100% Human plus 20% (likely human as well, disguised as joke but actually qualified under "this is not a joke.") It's not definitive, but it is possible - pending WoB or more data. Since a Koloss was (roughly) 200% human (twisted through hemalurgy - 100% human plus four 25% human soul spikes) - if Fort were descended from Koloss Blooded heritage, then the full Koloss ancestor would have to be at least 3 generations back. Or it could be something else entirely.
-
With the possible exception that this is a Hoid Misdirection TM HoA Epigraph to Ch 40: So, his "+20%" could be an oblique reference to either Koloss Blooded or a similar phenomenon where he would have extra genetic traits due to lineage. The lack of altered skin hue (blueish or grayish) makes it unlikely to be Koloss Blooded specifically (or, at least, not First Generation such) - but that does not rule out <something>.

I think it was more that he knew Wayne would not survive to share the information if he answered those questions. But Sazed didn't give Wax Lerasium - he suspected that Wax had dosed himself in the explosion and used differing vials with at least one (or more) metals added to the Iron to test Wax on which other abilities he may have gained (and how strong). And, knowing Wax - having him "experiment" is as good as telling him, once he has time to think and consider and draw conclusions.
-
Thank you for your Intro Post. I see you have not yet read the Secret Projects. As @SpiritOfWrath mentioned, your question gets considerable investigation in The Sunlit Man. I hope you enjoy Warbreaker - you should recognize a few characters (this is their origin story before appearing in other books you have already read).
-
That's exactly it, he was hoping Wax would be a full mistborn and realize that (but he could nto just tell Wax - his "balance" needed Wax to put it together with the clues adn the special vials of metals). Wax received such a small amount of Lerasium, he became a very low-power Mistborn with very few powers close enough to his abilities and intent to be used subconciously (like ironpulling the canteen of metals while falling).

Please do not double post - it is against the forum policies. Please see the Sharder FAQ for info and tips on editing posts and using quotes and @ messages (e. g. @Solio_) for calling attention to an edited post. Just to be clear (in case we were referencing two different meanings for "broke") when the WoB Says "Taln never broke" it means, specifically (OB Ch 38): So, what we discover in WaT is that Chana was Shallan's mother. Shallan killed her Mother - sending Chana to Braize. Chana Broke and allowed the return - which is why Taln returned to Roshar before the Everstorm was brought over at the end of WoR. Taln was still a being that had just withstood 4,500 years of torture on Braize (as the sole herald being tortured, until the last five years) - he is mentally and emotionally damaged because of that. What we do not know is if Ishar's folly with Odium's perpendicularity also contributed to Taln's mental illnesses the way that it affected all of the other Heralds. PTSD does not begin to describe Taln's emotional and psychological damage - but he's still not the Herald that "Broke" and allowed the return. Hope that helps

Why can't you take an Elantrian to the Gym
Treamayne replied to Riino's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
There is lore and info to be found in the Elantris Glossary (such as Gretgor and Widor) that did not make it into the final book. Same goes for the Annotations - which are a gerat read for anybody who wants to know why some decisions for the story were made the way they were made. For those that only know the current version - there were significant changes for the 10th anniversary edition that can be confusing when you discuss with anybody who has only read the original release -

Does Brandon Sanderson not understand religious jargon, or what?
Treamayne replied to bmcclure7's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Three points: Jasnah does fit the definition of a Heretic (just, possibly, not the definition you prefer) Wiktionary - Heretic - Noun - 2: Someone who does not conform to generally accepted beliefs or practices. Brandon has always been clear that unreliable Narrator applies to all of his works. Just because some characters might use an incorrect label (and Jasnah has corrected that before) does not mean that the Author is unaware of the distinctions. Sometimes Brandon makes prose decisions based on story narrative requirements. This may be like Kaladin's perceived acceleration problems - if Lashing works the way it should, he should never have to worry about blacking out due to acceleration. Brandon is aware of this and purposely chose the version of the ability that most readers would expect to be instinctively correct. The same applies - I expect it would be difficult to find a significant percentage of average readers that know or care about the fine distinctions between the definitions of heretic, apostate, heathen, etc. WoB: Hope that helps- 31 replies
