Seattle signing report out 10/14/13
PeterAhlstrom replied to karaokeang's topic in Events and Signings
Sigh. Some of this is wrong. I'm getting clarification. But it's spelled Elsecallers. -
Steelhunt #1 on NY Bestseller list (young adult)
PeterAhlstrom replied to guess's topic in General Brandon Discussion
The NYT created the children's fiction list in the first place because Harry Potter was dominating the hardcover top ten for months if not years and adult books couldn't hit #1. Then they created the children's series list so that any children's or YA series that has three or more books out won't clutter the children's fiction list. Then they created the YA fiction list so that the children's fiction list isn't only YA books. Basically they kept deciding "we don't want these books on this bestseller list" and making a new list to shunt them off to. The answer to your question is no, a book cannot be a bestseller on the YA list and the Adult list at the same time. The USA Today top 200 list tracks everything in one list. Hitting #1 on that list is much more difficult than hitting #1 on a Times list. AMoL did it. Steelheart was not close to #1 on USA Today. -
He is full for 2014, so you should target 2015.

I'm pretty sure that Brandon pointed to the wrong symbol when he mentioned the Skybreakers.

What happened to the 2nd draft of Words of Radiance?!?
PeterAhlstrom replied to minibro's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Brandon was doing the second draft before he finished the first draft. Basically, he wrote the 5 parts of the book one at a time, and went through each part to do a second draft before sending it to his editor. Then he went on to write the next part. So, he finished the second draft a few days after finishing the first draft. -
He was in Fort Myers/Sanibel earlier this year and did an impromptu meeting with fans. But other than that, the 2010 signing was the only one in Florida.

I thought it was funny.

Does Brandon Dislike the Southeast?
PeterAhlstrom replied to Nihilist's topic in General Brandon Discussion
This year Brandon has been to Atlanta (twice), Birmingham, Raleigh, Fort Myers, and New Orleans. (And Denver.) If you've missed these events, get on his mailing list and tell him what city you live in so he can send you an email when he is signing nearby. -
You have to read Alcatraz Four for those things to make sense.

Didn't you read Alcatraz 4?

Something I don't understand (Spoilers)
PeterAhlstrom replied to shadowwisp's topic in The Reckoners
You didn't read Infinity Blade: Awakening, did you. -
The UK publisher hasn't read the book yet, so they're just guessing. No spoilers.

Many writers consider using anything other than said to be a bad idea, and adverbs are right out. See Elmore Leonard's 10 rules of writing, and "said bookisms."

Infinity Blade Redemption came out today
PeterAhlstrom replied to lordofsoup's topic in Other Stories
The Sixth Incarnation of Pandora. I should read it again. I only got halfway through last time, a few years ago. But off the top of my head, I don't think there's a resemblance. -
The Alloy of Law is 95,000 words. Steelheart is 109,000 words. The Rithmatist is 92,000 words (counting all the words on the diagrams). I just saw the wrong length being thrown around for Alloy and wanted to set it straight. Anyway, Brandon had mentioned to me in the past that he expected Shadows of Self to be somewhat longer, perhaps around 150k. However, we won't really know until he finishes the book.

Q&A at Spokane Barnes & Noble
PeterAhlstrom replied to theofficetroll's topic in Events and Signings
It's Lift. -
He has no plans to return to the Defending Elysium world. But there will most likely be more Legion.

Shadows For Silence in the Forests of Hell
PeterAhlstrom replied to ROSHtafARian's topic in General Brandon Discussion
It's more the length of Legion, 18,000 words. And the main character is a woman, with a number of other dangerous women as well. If Hoid does appear, it's an even more minor cameo than in Alloy of Law, so don't get excited about that aspect. I like the story itself. -
Yes, and the transcripts of the non-reading parts of those videos are fine, but the interview database isn't a good place for excerpts to appear in print form because it's a bit too formal. The database should be all metatext, no actual text, if you get what I mean. Not that we should tell you or Terez how to run your database, but authors need to exercise a bit more control over the text itself. Especially when it's an early draft.
-
The readings themselves should NOT go into the interview database.

Dalinar's scene from WOR (Brandon reading)
PeterAhlstrom replied to The Count's topic in Stormlight Archive
It wasn't Yelig-nar, and Shalig-nar isn't what Brandon said either. Once the preview chapters start being released, this one should be among them, so you can learn the correct spelling then.- 49 replies

Is the Rithmatist the first of a trilogy
PeterAhlstrom replied to LevenThumps's topic in The Rithmatist
Right. 2 or 3. -
Bwahahaha!

If he ever did, nothing would stop him from changing some names and details and publishing it as original. Maybe he has already done this!!!!!
