I think we should move that kind of discussion to the Cosmere Q&A (that's what it's for, after all). Anyway, most of the Inquisitors had between 9 and 11 spikes (during TLR's rule). After Ruin took over he started to add more spikes - for example, he gave some of them Feruchemical atium so that he could use them on other worlds after he destroyed Scadrial. Let's combine info (from time of TLR's rule): - Inquisitors were said to be able to Push and Pull with greater strength than regular Mistborn - so at least 2 spikes for Allomantic iron and Allomantic steel : that's 4 to 6 spikes - they had to have internal physical metals - Allomantic tin and Allomantic pewter : at least 1 spike for each - some of them (not all) had Feruchemical gold - 1 spike - to be able to overpower Mistborns they had to have Allomantic atium - 1 spike - to be able to pierce copperclouds they had to have augmented Allomantic bronze - depending on whether they were a Seeker or not, 1 to 2 spikes That adds up to 9 spikes (the base for Seekers). Perhaps individual Inquisitors varied. Maybe not all had Allomantic tin and maybe not all had access to Allomantic atium. Maybe some of them had more Allomantic steel spikes than Allomantic iron spikes.

Actually... Emotional Allomancy doesn't work on koloss nor kandra; I mean, of course, after certain threshold is reached, you can control them, but under that threshold it has no effect. But at the same time Inquisitors are normally suspectible to emotional Allomancy. That line about Inquisitors... I vaguely remember that issue being discussed somewhere.

Brandon repeatedly stated that TLR used Hemalurgy on himself; that TLR "used Hemalurgy to pull off his most dramatic effects" and that it was the reason he heard Ruin. The thing is, even after BoM and its revelations about the remaining metals, there is no reason for TLR to have spikes. Absolutely zero. There was a WoB that his bracers acted as his spikes, but to act as spikes they had to actually hold a Hemalurgic charge. Are there any WoBs out there which hold more information? Or maybe it was decanonised?

That test is a little ridiculous. For example, the only option that allows me to save my partner over my superior is because I believe that my superior is of social elite which has to be destroyed Why can't I just prefer to save my friend over my superior cause, you know, bonds and friendship? Those things?

A war between Scadrial (era 2) and Roshar
Oversleep replied to Bowiespoon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Okay, I know how to put it (IIRC it's an explanation Brandon used himself): Let's say that we have people with different percentages of Allomantic powers. People who are at 40% or above Snap due to normal (extreme stress) situations. Skaa Mistings are 50%, noble Mistings are 65%, most Mistborns are 80%, Vin is 100% (Elend probably was around 200%). Note that it doesn't translate to relative strengths of Allomancy (at least, not much. I have yet to formulate a proper theory on this). Mistfallen were people at 30% - they hadn't Snapped when exposed to normal trauma. But mists were set to Snap whoever they could, that's why they induced a much more extreme trauma to get that bit of Preservation out. (There was also something about adding a little Investiture, I think. I'm not sure) So their heritage was 30%; if mists affected that, it's 40% now. -
Yeah, there is also the requirement of being of correct land/country. As with every Sel system we have seen so far.
-
I think we all agree that the access to the Investiture is related to the Intent of the Shard which the magic belongs to. Examples: Surgebinding - bond and oaths, Allomancy - self-preservation (Snapping), Feruchemy - ruining yourself to later preserve, Hemalurgy - Ruining, Awakening - Endowing Breaths et cetera. Now, we don't know much about Sel systems. We suspect that Shaod takes those who are devoted to something and that Dakhor is related to domination. What about Forgery? Shai states anyone could do it, but it requires long studies... And that's it! You have to be really devoted to spend many years learning and studying and if you are enough devoted, you gain Forgery! That's kind of self-fulfilling mechanism - what allows you to use Forgery is what you need to be to learn it. Anyone devoted enough can be a Forger and to become a Forger you need to be really devoted. I also suspected that rewriting Spiritual Aspect is kind of forcible act, so it can be linked to Dominion, but I feel I'm grasping at straws here.

Since healing works by putting the body at the state that's coded in Spiritual filtered by the Cognitive Aspect... Could a Gold Compounder heal himself using the Cognitive Aspect of his gold shadow? What would that do? Would it be permanent or disappear like SoulForgery? Also, what would happen if Bloodmaker Forger tried to heal while being SoulStamped?
-
The whole point of this topic is to strip the magic of the focus, source and it's end-variable. It doesn't matter in this analysis. There are some magic systems with strong internal cohesion and then there are some which have very little (Allomancy) or none at all (AonDor). That is, if we look at the effects. Also, if anyone wants to discuss about Roshar's Focus, there is a nice thread I made a while ago.

WoB Gold Shadows Might Function Akin to Soul Stamps
Oversleep replied to teknopathetic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Nope, electrum does that. But you bring up a very good point with connecting it with TES. I think that a Forger who was also an Augur would have it a lot easier to make Essence Marks. Also, while stamping them with it, they could burn gold to remember their original life! -
A war between Scadrial (era 2) and Roshar

He was? I always assumed that when Kelsier said he met only one skaa Mistborn in his life he meant himself (as a joke). As for Vin, Sazed says that Ruin chose her because of the insane mother + Seeker sister + Mistborn target combo, but that there were other reasons Ruin didn't know about (I took that to mean the fact that she was chosen by Preservation). I'm not saying mistfallen cannot pass on heritage, I'm saying their heritage is weaker. All of the mistfallen were people who didn't Snap due to extreme stress (i.e. the normal way). I'm not saying that mists were targeting them specifically; if there were a Misting who would Snap due to the beating but the beating didn't occure yet, mists would Snap him as well. But all of the mistfallen were people who surely had their healthy dose of trauma already and didn't Snap. Mists had to artificially induce longer and deeper trauma in order for them to Snap. I'm not sure what it says about their ability to pass on these abilities, but their Allomantic blood was weaker than blood of those who didn't need mists to Snap. But most of them died anyway. The whole Catacendre and what preceded it made very many Allomancers die. -

Well, with Kelsier being such an authority/religious figure... Actually I felt that in AoL he was a Shadow Archetype to both Miles and Wax.- 15 replies

Nononono, the answer is to live in fear. You just need to scream at yourself in your head louder than that othe voice It's way easier to do things you're normally afraid of if you have a superomnicidal Nightblood monologuing in your head @The Only Joe, if you have read Name of the Wind you probably understand. If not, here is a quote: There is truth in the saying that a lie told a thousand times becomes truth. The way I see it, you are a couple already... but maybe neither of you have realised that yet -

@Sunbird, uh... well...sometimes I made up various lines characters in my story could say. Or even lines I want to put in it. Sometimes I put them in my signature and wait until someone asks me about it and then I know I wrote something which made someone curious. I usually ask whether they like that line and why and various other questions. I have another quote like that, but for now this one stays in my sig. I'll switch them when I feel that one is old. -

I finished Emperor's Soul today. I knew it's going to be different from those epic fantasy things Brandon usually writes. I knew that. I've read Elantris which had a plotline of, basically, a man thrown out to abandoned city of undead/leprosaurium. It was very different and that's why it could be my favorite Brandon book along with WoK since these books are so different I still have to sleep on all of that and wait until my mind sorts everything and so on, but I liked TES very much. -
Then the publisher is safe Topic to deletion, I think. Nobody is gonna benefit from that.
-
Did Emperor's Soul have Ars Arcanum? Because Polish edition surely has no Ars Arcanum and I need to know whether I need to start a riot at publisher's headquarters.

We've got different magics in cosmere [citation needed]. The thing is, some are not so consistent with what effect they produce as others. The best way to notice this is to try do describe any magic by the least words as you can. Could you describe what AonDor does without listing various Aons? Anyway, let's start: Nalthis Awakening That one is consistent, as it's about animating things. Giving them life and ordering them with Command. Sel We know too little about Bloodsealing. *Shrug* Forgery Consistent. Rewriting past of an object (whatever the correction is and whatever the object is). It's done by manipulating Spiritual Aspect of an Object with changes manifesting in Physical and Cognitive. DakHor magic We know very little about it or I don't remember as much from Elantris as I'd like to. I'm open to help. AonDor Failed to see any consistency with what AonDor does. Teleportation, manipulation of elements, healing... Scadrial Allomancy I'd say it's not really consistent. It's telekinesis, enhancing the body, influencing emotions, manipulating sensing of Investiture, temporal seeing and manipulation... I fail to classify enhancement metals. Even if we assume Pushing/Pulling Internal/External as the pattern of Allomancy, what do Physical, Mental, Temporal and Enhancement have to do with each other? Also, godmetals have yet another quadrants (possibly, as atium and malatium fit too well into Temporal; lerasium and its alloys however don't fit even P/P I/E pattern). Feruchemy Consistent. "Be less X for amount of time, later be more X for that amount of time". It does not matter what X is, only that you lower your level of it and later increase it. Hemalurgy Consistent. "Spiritual Transplantation". Rip out fragment of Spiritweb (whatever what that part does), plant it into another Spiritweb. Roshar Roshar is weird. Or we're uninformed. Only Surgebinding we know enough about: Surgebinding Manipulation of Ten Surges. We know too little to judge whether these are consistent or not, but I suspect it's consistent. What are your thoughts?

A war between Scadrial (era 2) and Roshar
Oversleep replied to Bowiespoon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Wait, where are getting this from? In Final Empire era, even among nobles (which have strong Allomantic blood) Allomancy is quite rare, while Mistborns are even rarer. One in five isn't rare at all. Among noble-blooded skaa, there is one Misting in 10 000, while Mistborns... half-blooded Mistborns... there were only two, among which one was a Chosen One of a Shard, so I'm not sure it counts If you're implying that that 'one in five' is those 16% of mistfallen, I'm not sure their heritage counts much - they didn't Snap normally, they had to be additionaly prodded by the mists. So their blood was very weak. Anyway, this still doesn't mean much, as most of the noble blood Mistborns and Mistings died during House War or at hands of Vin. Then there were kolosses and volcanoes and whatever else Ruin threw at them while trying to end the world. As for the mistfallen, most of them died shortly after Snapping be it in battle or defending the Homeland. Mixing of the noble and skaa blood of course evened out the chance of Allomancy between those bloodlines, but there was also mixing with Feruchemical bloodlines which could (as this is not confirmed) lower the chance of those born with Allomancy. I'm saying could, because we don't know whether Allomancy chance got lower or simply interference caused the dying out of Mistborns and fracturing of Feruchemical powers. I suspect it lowered the chance, but mixing of the noble blood evened that out. -

In BoM it's stated that there is one Misting in 1000 people and that Ferrings are even more rare. I trust Khriss on this. -
It does not necessarily point to Heralds having greater powers than other Surgebinders; they were worshipped like deities and they were, in fact, emissaries of a god. Their authority alone could do such things. As for the description of Jezrien's Honourblade, when Kaladin inspects it after he defeats Szeth, he mentions it having no ornaments or decorations and comments it being strange.
-
The thing is that Honorblades grant Surgebinding instantly to whoever wields it, while becoming a Surgebinder requires being broken and being certain type of person with correct beliefs and way of life (which attracts spren and is later extended as Oaths). But I still suspect there is something more to Honorblades.

I believe we reached consensus that tin improves quantity of the information while Heightenings improve quality of it. So no matter the Heightening, you won't hear those whispers Tineye would, but Tineye is no match for Awakener when it comes to telling hues and tones apart. There probably is a small overlap as both of the abilities have to do with improving senses, but a very small one. A Tineye at the Third Heightening would probably have almost perfect senses. Why almost? Because you'd also need to be a Windwhisperer to have all the improvements.

The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!

I turned 21 today. Well, my sister totally forgot about my birthday (more like 'it's June already?!' than 'you have a birthsday?') cause she was working on her master's thesis We laughed about it and then she went "Oh no, I don't know what to give you" mode... but then I told her that there was recently the premiere of new book of that author I like and I'd like to have it. So now I have acquired The Emperor's Soul! Yay! My parent's gave me a one litre Jim Beam and some money. I think that the best use for that amount of money is to buy White Sand. And I passed today's exam and today there were two storms... A good day it was
