  1. The Final Empire, measured against the Principles of Dystopia: 1. There is a strong military or police presence. Steel Inquisitors. Mistings in the Steel Ministry. 2. Rights are limited or nonexistent. Skaa are not considered people, so of course they have no rights. Animals in the US have more rights than skaa in the Final Empire. 3. People are isolated. They're all stuck on the North Pole. The only other civilization is on the South Pole. 4. People are discouraged from speaking out against injustice. It ain't injustice if it's happening to a skaa. 5. Thinking is discouraged. The skaa are so worn down they can hardly think. And don't get me started on the Terrismen. 6. Punishment does not fit the crime. Public executions, whipping, being sent to the Pits... 7. There is no right to privacy. Kandra spies. Kandra spies everywhere. 8. Asking questions is discouraged. Asking questions is always welcomed. Just be careful to not get the Steel Ministry after you. 9. The state is more important than any individual. Ooh, you're a seeker in the Steel Ministry. I hope you enjoy having spikes pounded into your body, being ripped away from your previous life, and having pathways to the power of destruction opened in your mind! 10. People are distracted my mindless entertainment. The nobles always enjoy public executions. 11. Entertainment is highly violent or sexual. See above. 12. People are distracted by drugs and/or alcohol. Not that we know of. 13. The state controls every aspect of people's lives. The Steel Ministry controls everything. 14. Destruction is better than construction. Oh yeah. Have I mentioned Ruin yet? 15. People live in fear of the state. Who doesn't fear the Lord Ruler? 16. People who are different are perceived as threats. Skaa mistings are hunted down quite zealously. 17. There is a high suicide rate. 18. People are not social. 19. "Education" consists of teaching people what to think, not how to think. Terrismen are conditioned from birth to become perfect stewards. 20. People are violent to each other. Skaa thieves will do horrible things to each other if they can benefit. Almost like nobles, but less subtle. 21. When people speak to each other, they say nothing intelligent. 22. War or war preparation is constant. Ruin is playing a game called "destroy the world", and you're his soldier. 23. People are emotionally disconnected to each other. The nobles only care about the fate of their House. The skaa thieves only care about the fate of themselves. Neither of those leave much room for empathy, 24. People are more attached to entertainment than they are to each other. See above. 25. Technology is used to distract people. 26. People are "educated" at a very young age to be obedient. Terrismen. Do I have to repeat myself? 27. People are unhappy, but they cannot understand why. Do plantation skaa look happy to you? 28. People are selfish and self-absorbed. In the Final Empire, you put your well-being over another's. If your hungry, you knife the beggar next to you and take their bread. If your son is a liability to your house, you marry him off and plan to kill him once he produces an heir. 29. People avoid uncomfortable subjects. 30. Religion is used to oppress the people, not to liberate them. The Lord Ruler is God. The Lord Ruler saved the world. Obey the Lord Ruler. 31. People spend their free time seeking pleasure, not thinking. 32. People resist education and are proud to be ignorant. 33. People make decisions based on simplistic, ignorant reasoning. 34. There is no use for intellectual people. Not among skaa, anyway. 36. People have to hide the fact that they are intelligent. Plantation skaa showing any measure of intelligence are whipped. 37. Those who do not appear happy are perceived as threats. 38. People are kept busy by being put to hard labor. Skaa. 39. Books and information that are considered "dangerous" are destroyed. Not destroyed, per say. More like... 40. History and law is rewritten to better fit what the authority wants the people to believe. ...that. Ruin might be entirely dedicated to making things end, but he does it with style. 41. Leaders are corrupt and ambitious. Most nobles, obligators, even some crewleaders... 42. People are exploited for their labor, then discarded when they are no longer useful. How many times do I have to repeat myself? 43. People are starving. And a final note: SKAA.

    New Boots

Shallan looks so guilty but unrepentant.
  3. A fee? How would that help me find your lost things?* *The time it takes to find something is directly proportional to the size of the fee. Not like I'm holding stuff hostage. I wouldn't dream of that. Nope, not me.
  4. Anything you want to talk about in particular?
  5. Rikku Nakajima walked towards her flat with earbuds in her ears, an iPhone in her hand, and a plastic bag in the crook of her arm. She resisted the urge to around and instead focused on texting to the fake account she'd set up. She didn't need to use the earbuds and iPhone to decrease suspicion out here on the street, but it was still good to practice. Nothing screamed CUSTOMER more than a stereotypical teenager paying attention to everything but the world around her. The bag, which was full of clothing and makeup, bounced against Rikku's legs accusingly. She refused to feel guilty. It was the storeowner's fault that the security was so horrible, not hers. A flash of white caught Rikku's eye and she stopped. Someone had taped a new sign to the wall. Flatmate needed! The Flat is 70 M2, two bedrooms, one bathroom, small kitchen. Contact Joseph Busshu for more details at 330--6915. Joseph Busshu... that name sounded familiar. That must be Rikku's flatmate: the cute one that had just moved in that paid too much attention to his things. And he wanted a flatmate, probably to split the rent. Rikku grinned. Whoever Joseph's flatmate was, she hoped that he didn't care too much about his stuff.
  6. Today I was listening to a TEDTalk about how technology is replacing human interactions with clean, human-to-robot ones. I snickered every time the speaker mentioned "connection". And then they mentioned cultivating your relationships...
  7. Morzazoth is secretly a kandra! Or some other, less friendly eldritch horror...
  8. About the diversity issue: some video games have problems with making all of their female characters look like the same same big-boobed, stick-skinny, spine-must-be-broken-to-pull-that-pose-off lady over and over again. I could complain about it promoting unhealthy body expectations for women or showing an unwelcome face to about half the population (women have money too, companies!) or even how it shatters suspension of disbelief, but I won't. There's already plenty of topics about that on tumblr. All I'll say here is this: don't these artists get bored, creating the same body shapes over and over again?
  9. 47% a Lightweaver. This was my second time taking the test, since I've thought about the questions a little more.
  10. I was the seeker in Operation Windwhisper. I think being a seeker who knew a sparker and a windwhisperer made me lazier in my analysis, because at the peak efficiency of OW, we had two PM scans and one bronze scan a night. Then Wonko died, but I cleared the role Burnt had claimed, so OW just replaced the PM scan with an alignment scan. Now I understand why the GMs were unhappy with OW... There was a moment where Burnt privately PMed me to say she suspected Lopen, who was cleared. I trusted him more than her (despite all of us being "cleared"), so I thought she might be an eliminator casting suspicion on Lopen. I died and Lopen was Spiked that Night, but OW would have fractured if that hadn't happened.
  11. An easy thing to do would be to make it against the rules, as in: The Oathbreaker must kill anyone the Holder tells them to kill, except for themself.
  12. The spiked started off badly this game, but were able to win because of conversions and the fact that Araris wanted to win as a SPiked, not a villager. I like conversions. Adds an extra touch of paranoia to everything. EDIT: I've been reading through the docs and have finally made sense of this Harmonium thing. Elb, you know what I said about wanting all my clarifications to come from you? I retract that statement.
  13. Rem walked to the door and stopped. NeLaar looked around. Len had drifted off from the conversation (was he inspecting the walls?), Aaron was doing something with his chalk (had that line just disappeared?), and Rem was... still standing at the door. NeLaar cast another desperate glance at the other two men. He didn't want to be close to someone who had threatened to break his bones and burn him with fire. Fire...fire was bad. NeLaar blinked, and suddenly he was back inside the firepit again, and the flames were chewing at his flesh and blood poured from his knife wounds and he screamed and screamed and -- NeLaar blinked furiously. Snap out of that, he told himself. That never happened. You're not a kandra, you've never been to First of the Sun, you've never been burned alive -- Harmony, he was shaking. He wiped the sweat off of his forehead with the back of his hand. Terris. He could do a Terrisman. Neryl, that was it. A quiet man with distant Terris ancestry going out for a meal with friends. Neryl blinked. This building really needed better ventilation; he was sweating. Hopefully the restaurant would have a more agreeable temperature. He walked to the door and turned towards Rem. "Shall we go eat?" he asked.
  14. Granted. Your associates in the Dark Alley would like to, ah, invite you over for cookies and tea. No, they aren't planning on using those spikes. Especially not on you. Of course not. Why would you ever think that? If you survive that, you'll have to be very careful with ingesting metals. Some of them will cause cancer and other nasty things. But if you don't want to die, the Dark Alley will be happy to accept free hemalurgic spikes...
  15. I haven't heard of it. Then again, my school hasn't covered WWII in much depth (most in-depth was probably English in Middle School), so it could be because of that...
  16. Jackson's getting removed from the $20 bill and is being replaced by Harriet Tubman. Woot woot!
