  1. On the topic of Adolin killing Sadeas, we have this WoB: (source) He has also said that while Orders like the Windrunners and Skybreakers would not not like what he did, others like the Dusbringers and Willshapers would be totally cool with it.
  2. First up, Rebecca Lovatt over at The Arched Doorway has just posted a fantastic new interview with Brandon that took place earlier this year at Minicon. Highlights include an embarrassing story from Brandon's youth, a discussion on the setting of Dark One, an update on White Sand, and tantalizing hints about the future of the cosmere! Shadows of Self is already a little over a month away, which means that Brandon will soon be on the road again. Tor posted the schedule for the US leg of the tour a few weeks ago and today Gollancz has posted the UK leg. Also included in Gollancz's announcement was a mention of special lanyards being give away at the UK stops which according to the announcement can be "personalized with cards from either the Reckoners, Mistborn, or Stormlight Archive series". This likely refers to the special punch-out figure cards of Szeth, Regalia, Obliteration, and Newton Brandon gave out during the Words of Radiance and Firefight tours. Which would indicate that he's planning to do something similar for this tour as well. Remember if you are planning to go to any of these signings to follow the included links (or go to the Events page on Brandon's website) to find out that location's policies. Some of these events are ticketed or require the purchase of Shadows of Self from the store hosting the event. 3. The general format of a signing is he starts with a General Q&A period where he takes questions from the assembled crowd (these are usually the generic "What are you working on?"/"Movies?"/"How did you get started?") followed by a reading from something unpublished (for this tour it's going to be a chapter from Dalinar's flashbacks in Stormlight 3) and then a signing line where he can interact with people one-on-one while signing books (which is going to be a couple hours depending on where you are in line). Some bookstores are pretty good at organizing the line so that people don't actually have to stay in the line for 2 hours and can go do stuff and come back (i.e. some give everybody a number and then just have people line up 50 at a time).
  4. Brandon has used the word "sapient" for this distinction.
  5. Okay so, to my knowledge (which as I'm one of the people who helps keep Theoryland up to date I'm going to assume is fairly complete) at no point have the Powers That Be over on Theoryland said that they no longer want the database to be updated with Brandon/cosmere stuff. Now to be honest I've not really added much of anything in the last six months or so because I've been working on some other projects and real life stuff. Hopefully that will no longer be relevant in the relatively near future (it really depends on when I can get certain things done). My main objection to this idea is that there should really only be one Active database at a time, otherwise that is just duplicated effort (as inputting and organizing all of that information is time-consuming, and it having to be done for two separate places at the same time is a waste in my opinion). Now that isn't to say that the current situation doesn't have issues, it does. But bear in mind that this is something that we have discussed at length behind the scenes. We are continually discussing ways to improve things, making the process more efficient and making the information more accessible, but any changes are going to take time. There are a plenty of ideas for things I would like to do with a WoB database, unfortunately most of them just aren't going to be feasible any time soon. There is work being done though, which I really hope people will like when the changes finally go public but I can't say for certain when that will be.
  6. On the Jasnah and marriage thing (putting this in a spoiler tag since it's slightly off-topic):
  7. @maxal I think that was a fairly recent question actually? (yeah I just checked and it was asked about 5 days ago) But here are some videos of one of the "panels" Brandon was on at Sasquan. I don't want to say too much about it because frankly it's hilarious and you just need to watch it:
  8. So isolde-and-monsters over on tumblr just received a signed copy of Words of Radiance. She asked "Can you reveal something about Adolin, however small, that we don't know yet?" and received the following (very interesting): "Much of Adolin's early sense of morality was instilled in him by his mother."
  9. With regards to the music thing, keep in mind that the 12-note chromatic scale of Western tradition is not universal. So what might sound out of key to us might not be out of key to other musical traditions, such as the Arabic maqam.
  10. Leaving open the possibility that Szeth survived is exactly the reason Brandon changed it in the first place. Yes the "coming back from the dead" is more dramatic, but even that gets repetitive three times in a row (as Syl, Szeth, and Jasnah are all presumed dead only to return alive at a later point).
  11. Yeah, "healing" is a really problematic, and frankly offensive, topic. One thing I want to make perfectly clear is that with autism there is nothing /to/ be healed, an autistic individual's brain is merely wired differently, it is not wired "wrong". This is not something that Stormlight is going to be able to change, for the same reason Stormlight cannot "fix" Kaladin's depression.
  12. Aaaaand I might be wrong on the second Reckoners trilogy thing, this response in the AMA definitely makes it sound like there's something more on the horizon.
  13. Era 2 is the Alloy of Law era, the modern trilogy is Era 3.
  14. That wouldn't get us the books any faster, it might even slow him down. Those side projects are part of what keeps Brandon fresh for writing Stormlight, if he tried write them back-to-back he would get burned out.
  15. I do want to address this because when he was discussing things at that point I knew people were going to interpret it that way but I don't think he meant it that way. It's tricky because he says that his main three priorities at the moment are Stormlight, Mistborn, and Reckoners and then immediately says that he will be doing another trilogy with Random House. But he also says that the trilogy is something new.
  16. Unfortunately the honorblades existed long before Honor was Splintered by Odium. They were given to the Heralds by Honor, and he was still alive when they were abandoned by the Heralds during the Last Desolation. That said it is probable that they are Splinters of Honor (as Shards are capable of Splintering off portions of their power with actually being Splintered, this is what happens with Endowment and the divine Breath of the Returned). Honorspren, like Syl, and some of the other spren types that bond with the Knights Radiant are also Splinters of Honor. For Splinters of Dominion, there are the skaze (which are mentioned once in Elantris, but Brandon has described them as "evil seons".) It is also important to note that the bulk of Devotion and Dominion's remains make up the Dor and doesn't seem to be collected in discrete "Splinter-packets". As for combining a seon and an honorblade... Investiture interferes with other Investiture. It might be theoretically possible, but incredibly difficult to do. Part of the reason Sazed was able to do what he did was because there was so much power involved. Brandon has described this using the metaphor that "nuclear fusion is hard, unless you are in the middle of a star". At that point, Sazed was in the middle of a star.
  17. I'm basing that off this WoB: (source)
  18. Sorry for the late reply. I'm also not an astronomer but I don't think it strains credulity for it to not have a tilt. There's quite a bit of variation in the degrees of tilt in the solar system. It's also important to remember that there's a lot about Roshar that are... "interesting" astronomically speaking (such as Roshar's sun being too young for life to have arisen naturally or the moons being in astronomically unstable orbits), so whether it is unusual or not that is just how it is. Eh, more like that is the one part where I had explicit WoB that I could find relatively quickly. Here's a more in-depth response: I don't agree with the "natural spren" theory. Most of the spren we see are the result of Honor and Cultivation's Investiture, not Adonalsium's, I don't even think we've had confirmation from Brandon that we have even seen any of the Adonalsium-Invested spren. Granted there's still a lot we don't know about spren but your interpretation of how spren work just doesn't feel right to me. I could very likely be mistaken but at the current time I don't think we know enough to make accurate theories about pre-H+C Roshar. I don't think I would say that the listener's communicate through spren in the Cognitive Realm. They can attune to the Rhythms, but I wouldn't say that is the same as what you are suggesting. While I would say it is probable that the Rhythms and the spren are at least somewhat related I'd argue that it is because they are both derived from Spiritual ideals. I wouldn't say "Brandon has suggested a romantic involvement between the two", he explicitly confirmed they were romantically involved (notably the question refers to them as Honor and Cultivation, which would certainly indicate that it continued past their Ascensions, though the fact that they went to Roshar together is another indication of that). At this point I don't think we know enough to accurately guess when the highstorms were Invested. Is this idea possible? Sure, but I wouldn't put money on anything at this point. I don't agree with your mandate theory, so I'm disinclined to agree with your interpretation of the highstorms here. Thematically I'm generally in favor of the colors of the moons being representative of the Shards. I'm skeptical of them actually being the physical bodies of the Shards though, since that doesn't seem to be how shards work? Not to mention that despite his presence being felt on Roshar, Odium is actually located on Braize. On the part of the moon crashing into Roshar... I think that is something that people would remember. And I just don't think that would result in what actually happened? Like that would have caused a fairly sizable crater, not create a cymatic pattern in the rock (which requires some sort of wave, not a single impact). Not that I am aware of. One minor note, proximity to the sun wouldn't necessarily make a planet hotter, that has more to do with the make-up of the planet's atmosphere. After all Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, Venus is actually the hottest planet in our solar system. (Although Mercury gets quite toasty during the day the temperature plummets to well below freezing, because of its thin atmosphere, whereas Venus has a rather thick atmosphere with an overactive greenhouse effect.) On Honor's death, I believe he died an unknown length of time /after/ the Recreance, since he had time to include a memory from that day in his vision-journal. (Oh and the 99 Desolations thing is a mostly philosophical thing rather than an accurate count) Also does it mention the long winter thing during the Feverstone Keep vision and I have just forgotten that?
  19. We do have a WoB on this: (source)
  20. The recording starts pretty much right where the answer starts. (Basically it's the same answer he's given before: TES worked out so well that he's hesitant to do a sequel, but if get's the right inspiration he might)
  21. Oh well then I'm glad that I didn't start it yet. I almost did and then I was like "Nah I'll just watch it through and start later tonight..." I loved how the camera kept panning to Peter to see his reactions. I was quite amused. And I agree with Peter, Brandon totally needs to watch Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It's pretty much a shardworld.
  22. You can totally use a User page for this (so like "http://coppermind.net/wiki/User:Oudeis/Hemalurgy_Chart").
  23. Yeah her father, Tevidian, was a Tekiel.
  24. Shallan bonded Pattern as a small child, we still don't know the circumstances of how that happened. Shallan's mother and her friend tried to kill her so Shallan protected herself with Pattern-as-a-Shardblade. This was intensely traumatic for her so she began to suppress certain memories. As a result Pattern was basically shunted back into the Cognitive Realm and their bond began to atrophy (but not necessarily break). The really interesting thing about suppressed memories like this is that the individual can be highly selective when it comes to what is forgotten, for example Shallan knows she has a Shardblade but doesn't allow herself to remember that the blade is a living spren. This is why she thinks about the 10 heartbeats despite that being a requirement of dead blades. Also see here when Tyn attacks her: The reality of her situation starts to bleed through but Shallan willfully pushes it away. WoR as a whole showed us how good Shallan is at compartmentalizing her issues.
