Bands of Mourning Full Book Reactions [Bands Spoilers]
WeiryWriter replied to Chaos's topic in Mistborn
Mistborn Era 2 takes place after Stormlight 5, so Hoid has had time to get to Scadrial. -
Oh wow, this was actually my head canon for what was going on, so it's nice to get this confirmed. Thanks for asking about it!

Bands of mourning release party??
WeiryWriter replied to Peng the Just's topic in Events and Signings
Maybe warn him a head of time so he can have the math already done by the time you ask the question? -
And that term is "Vessel". So as far as I can tell this is the canon term for what we have long referred to as "Shardholders" (which is interesting in and of itself because I believe in the past Brandon indicated there was no term for this, as the people just "became the Shard"). Now it's always nice to have canon terms for stuff, and it does eliminate the confusion with "Shardbearer", but what makes it brilliant in my eyes is that it changed the way I think about holding a Shard. In my head when I used the term Shardholder I always thought of the holder part in the context of somebody holding something in their hands. When I saw the term Vessel, I didn't think too much of it at first (beyond the oh cool a canon term) because it is essentially a kind of holder. And then I started thinking about it and realized it holds things in a different way, it's more like a pitcher holding water. Now in retrospect this is kind of a "well duh" realization as Brandon has previously referenced how Slivers are like balloons that have been inflated and then deflated, but it's not something that has sunk in until now.

Bands of mourning release party??
WeiryWriter replied to Peng the Just's topic in Events and Signings
I would recommend rephrasing this as "is there a /meaningful/ connection between..." because when Brandon has been asked questions in this style before he's wiggled his way out of it by saying "technically yes, they're both in the cosmere". That said I really don't think there's anything there. Nightblood devours Invesiture, including the spark of life, Shades are Cognitive shadows, which are dead people who have had the parts of their soul tying them to the Realms replaced with Investiure (like petrified wood). It's something about Threnody itself that is causing them to manifest as Shades, if a shadow from another world were to go there they would also become a Shade. -
Yeah that's a larkin, not Nightblood. We see a preserved larkin early in WoR as a paperweight during one of the planning meetings Kaladin observes, and Rysn receives one at the end of her WoR interlude. They also appear in the background of this image:

A little over a year ago, Brandon made the surprising announcement that he had not only written the sequel to The Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, but the sequel to that as well. The Bands of Mourning, as the sixth Mistborn book, has a lot to live up to. Not only with these characters, but with the world itself, there's a lot of history to contend with. Luckily, Bands soared above the hopes I had for it. It's quickly become my favorite Wax and Wayne era novel, and, for me at least, it's neck and neck with some of the Era 1 trilogy. Bands picks up about six months after Shadows of Self concludes, the aftereffects of which are still being felt. Wax has had his worldview shaken and is still reeling from the emotional blow of Shadows' climax. So when a kandra arrives, seeking his help to find the Bands of Mourning, the fabled metalminds of the Lord Ruler--rumored to give any who possess them his powers--Wax is disinclined to agree. That is, of course, until a more personal motivation comes to light. The Set, and Wax's uncle Edwarn, are back and there's no telling what they are up to now... Part of what sets Bands apart from Alloy and Shadows is the setting. We leave Elendel behind, and while Bands still has the distinctive thriller pacing of its predecessors, you can definitely see hints of a more epic scope as we explore more of the wider world. Turns out there is a lot more going on than the people of Elendel would like to admit. Bands is also a distinctly different kind of story. Alloy was very much a Western, it may not have been set in the Roughs proper, but it was steeped in the feel of it. Shadows, on the other hand, was more of a true thriller, a cat-and-mouse mystery. At its core it's a personal story. Bands though... Bands is like an Indiana Jones story set on Scadrial. There's a certain extravagance of plot and of situations beyond mere mortal men (and women). The characters have also come a long way. Wax, Wayne, and Marasi are not the same people that we met back in Alloy, they have grown and changed, and in some cases made some pretty tough choices. Bands continues that. The book is full of moments of character growth and realizations about themselves and their companions. These are some of the most powerful moments in the book. It goes to show that while Brandon is known as the "worldbuilding guy," he's a master of character as well. The stand out character is Steris, by far. This is definitely the book where she comes into her own; she's not just a side character any more. I feel she helps bring a certain amount of levity to the book in a way that is distinct from Wayne's humor. You cannot help but smile at her sincerity and earnestness in the face of the almost larger than life world of Wax, Wayne, and Marasi. She may not have powers, but she's far from useless. Over the past few months I've seen more and more people show an appreciation for her, but if you are still on the fence, I think she might win you over in Bands. I'll even wager that she'll become a fan favorite going forward. If I had to describe The Bands of Mourning in one (two?) word(s) it would be "mind-blowing". Looking back at it now I still cannot believe that Brandon was able to pull off everything that he did. Especially that he was able to do it without the book feeling rushed. Don't get me wrong, Bands still has the Brandon Avalanche that we all know and have grown to love, but the build-up to it is much more subtle. I was already well into the avalanche by the time I realized it had even begun. It is hard, even, to pinpoint the beginning of the avalanche, as the pacing is handled so smoothly. There are moments where you have to stop and go "Wait a minute, is that... It is! Oh my Harmony, I can't believe it!" Then at other times you think you know exactly what is going on only to have things take a hard right into sheer, unbridled insanity, but it's incredible nevertheless, in a way you would never have dreamed possible. And it's like this over and over again. It's a wild ride, and at times it will leave you breathless, but in the end you'll be hanging on every word, right until the very last. To be honest it's hard to think of my least favorite part of the book. I do have a few minor complaints but they are tiny, nit-picky things, such as a scene near the beginning that drags on rather longer than was really necessary, but in the long run they did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. Really the worst thing about Bands is that it spoiled us! We only had to wait three months for its release (after Shadows) and unfortunately it's going to be significantly longer than that before we can get our hands on the next book. During last month's State of the Sanderson, Brandon put the current estimate for the release of The Lost Metal-- the final Wax and Wayne novel--at late 2018. Luckily that's not as long as the wait between Alloy and Shadows, but it is not an insignificant amount of time. I have hard time holding that against the book, as even though the wait won't be as short, or as easy, as we might wish for, there is still plenty to keep us busy in the meantime. And I don't know if I'm quite ready to move on from these characters, especially after the experience that is this book, so perhaps the wait is a blessing in disguise. It will undoubtedly give us time to sort through everything (and believe me when I say there is plenty to work through). This is one adventure you do not want to miss. Early copy provided by Dragonsteel Entertainment. Posted with their permission. The Bands of Mourning comes out on January 26th, 2016.

Do you happen to have a link to where Brandon mentioned the freezing potions thing? It's not something I can recall ever seeing.
-
Actually it is not, I can't find a chapter titled "Stones Unhallowed". It is obliquely referenced, in I believe the Szeth interlude, in that there's a mention that Urithiru was often the only connection the Shin had to the outside world due to its "stones unhallowed". Stones Unhallowed and Oathbringer have also both been confirmed to be the titles of books in-world.

I'm inclined to say no, since an alternate name for it is the "spiritweb". -
The Splintercast Reads Shadows of Self, Episode 3: Chapters 7-9

This is great, I too ship Wax and Steris (ship name Sterillium?) and it was quite amusing to see you fall victim to it's adorableness. But after listening to this, I'm not sure you should read Bands. You'll surely explode, this is nothing compared to the Steris in that...- 19 comments

Originally when Brandon instituted the Era convention Wax and Wayne was Era 2. In December he decided to change it to Era 1.5 "to be less confusing". Frankly I think it's more confusing now.
-
I don't think she can change her actual age, just her apparent age (i.e. she can give herself wrinkles and other signs of age).

I will save you from the evils of doubleposting! I'm currently watching it, and it's awesome. I've been waiting for this.

I think a better interpretation is "Just because someone is a main viewpoint character doesn't mean they are guaranteed to survive". Which really doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know, everyone is a potential goner.

Chapter 6 is the final preview chapter.
-
Tor.com has just posted Chapter 6 of The Bands of Mourning over on their site. Check it out here! This is unfortunately the last preview they will be posting (Peter confirmed as much on Reddit last week) but that just means the release is just around the corner. We are back to Marasi's point of view as she examines the information given to the team about what the kandra have been able to get out of ReLuuur when she comes across a drawing of some sort of creature (I wonder what that is, a Hemalurgic construct as Marasi suspects?). And after a rather reflective conversation with Wayne we get to see the adorable aftermath of Chapter 5 for Wax and Steris. Of course, then there's a cliffhanger, but I don't think any of us are surprised by that. Check out our forum topic here to discuss the preview chapter!

Again I don't really see the problem here. The Radiant-bonding spren are sapient, they can choose who they bond with. It's not a situation like "act this way and you automatically get a spren bond". Yes acting a certain way is a necessary part of the process, but the spren still needs to be looking in the right place, and still has to agree to the bond. It would be incredibly foolish for a spren to bond one of the Heralds, they already have Surgebinding (and who knows what other abilities), so their bond really wouldn't mean that much as opposed to bonding a normal person (meaning there is one more Surgebinder in the world).

Hmm, that's weird, my copy of Aether did not come with any foreword, and I distinctly remember Brandon referring to it as "cosmere but non-canon" in WoB.

Odd thought, how do you say you're from Elendel?
WeiryWriter replied to mattig89ch's topic in Mistborn
This is one of those weird instances where I pronounce names, and words derived from those names, in different ways (as with leras/lerasium and ati/atium). Elend = ih-LEND Elendel = ELL-en-DELL -
Earlier today Brandon posted about the release party for The Bands of Mourning. As with Shadows, they will be using a digital line. This time however, numbers will NOT be distributed randomly, the earlier you sign up, the lower your number will be. The form for the digital line will be going up here, tomorrow at 10:00 AM Mountain Time. Brandon is planning on getting to the bookstore early and pre-signing/numbering all of the books before they let in people at 10:00 PM (in case somebody who doesn't want to get it personalized doesn't have to wait through the signing line). From 10 until 10:45 there will be a meet & greet where you can socialize, ask Brandon questions, or get a picture taken as well as other fun activities. Then there will be the customary talk, q&a, and reading. For those of you who can't make it do remember that you can still can order a Signed and Numbered copy from Wellers Book Works (though Brandon has changed his policies regarding that, which we reported on yesterday). Do keep in mind that Brandon will not be touring for this book, as he did a lengthy one for Shadows of Self and will be doing one for Calamity next month. He will try however to make sure that there are copies of Bands (along with the re-releases of the first two Alcatraz books) available during the Calamity tour. In other news, fans in the Salt Lake City area have an exciting opportunity to play the Mistborn Adventure Game. Herowannabe, starting February 24th, will be, after an introductory session, running the "Beasts of Burden" campaign from the recent Skaa: Tin & Ash supplement. No prior knowledge is required and it's completely free. Participants will also receive a free set of the Mistborn Allomancy dice Crafty Games kickstarted last year. For more information check out his thread here!

The release of The Bands of Mourning is just under two weeks away and the preorders for the Signed and Numbered editions from Wellers Book Works have just gone up in Brandon's store. Be warned however that Brandon has changed his policies regarding these preorders, the reasoning for which you can read in his blog post here. The short of it is that signing these preorders is a time-consuming process, and it's only gotten more time-consuming as time has gone on and the number of people wanting more extravagant personalizations has increased. As such if you want something beyond just the signature and number the price is going up, with the extra money going as a donation to the Waygate Foundation. I think this is a nice compromise as he was considering doing away with personalizations altogether, but this way people who really want them still can and there is money going towards a good cause. There are two tiers of personalizations. The first, requiring a $5 donation, is for those who would like their name and a short phrase (i.e. "Happy Birthday") or a quote of Brandon's choice (i.e. "Life Before Death" or "Hands All Red"). The second, requiring a $20 donation, is for the more unusual requests, like limericks, drawings, and cosmere questions, as long as the request is within reason. (Do note that Brandon will no longer answer questions like "Tell me something about XXX" you much ask something specific, and even then he may RAFO if the answer is too long.) If you want one of these, there is a limited number, and the deadline for ordering is January 20th! In other news Tor.com is currently holding a giveaway for a copy of The Bands of Mourning here. Unfortunately this is only open to those in the US and Canada. The deadline to enter is January 16th at 12:00 PM Eastern time. Tor.com has also continued releasing previews of Chapters 4 and 5 of Bands. Chapter 4 is from the point of view of Wayne, which is always a treat, and features a great bit of character progression for him. Chapter 5 is back to Wax and features some information about the world outside of Elendel and a great conversation between Wax and Steris. Also don't forget that the Tor re-releases of the Alcatraz series start next month with Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians and The Scrivener's Bones being released on February 16th (the same day as Calamity). Amazon.com has turned on their "Look Inside" feature for these two books giving us a sneak preview of the awesome illustrations by Hayley Lazo. Thank you Peter Ahlstrom for bringing this to our attention! Check out our forum topics here to discuss Chapter 4, here to discuss chapter 5, or here to discuss the Alcatraz illustrations!
