  1. @jofwu @maxal I tried, some are probably RAFO. Other are simply doubts of mine born with my third re-reading of Mistborn
  2. Doh...I notice it just now, Am I too late ?
  3. Yata

    Black vs. Grey

I am not so sure, but your idea has merit, but there is no mention of something like that in the whole book. Vivenna with his improved Color Recognition didn't mention something different between "her gray" and "vasher's gray"...neither in the gray of the many Lifeless she saw in the city.
  4. I think we have no more this doubt. Brandon said a Vessel may survive the Splintering of his Shard, therefore the Splintering of a Shard cause mostly the Vessel's death. Not the opposite. This mean Odium's attack is in some way focused to "hit the Shard" not the Vessel (if such sentence has sense). Notice, a Shard whole but unheld may auto-Splinter itself...but it's a side effect of a Power without control not the way the Splintering works (at least with Odium's technique)
  5. Exactly and the Savantism itself is defined as "really dangerous for the Soul". Anyway if we return to the Hemalurgy VS other kind of Soul's Damage. If we make an analogy as Soul=a guy: Snapping: punch the guy until he start to cry Hemalurgy: Remove one of his Kidney (honestly I can't figure a good analogy for the Savantism, maybe: a guy who recive so much punches to become a masochist and day after day riskes his life more and more, because he want more punches). Anyway returning to the Soul: - Snapping is a superficial Soul damage - something that cuts the Soul kills the target (we are in the Mistborn subforum and i don't want to put a Spoiler tag) if hits central part of the Soul. - Hemalurgy remove a desired part of the Soul, but rip also the "near parts"...it mostly cause the death for his own (regardless of the physical damage), notice also that a guy who is so luckly to survive the Spiritual ripping is leaved with less soul and this mean less life spark and less health. This would guide him to die for less serious wound (and we know to performe the Hemalurgy, you need to hurt seriusly the target). A last point, Spikes' size is almost irrelevant. The Spirit-Web didn't weight a lot, also a simple needle may keep all the needed charge, so using smaller Spike didn't mean you steal less soul
  6. It was a Theory spawned by my theory of "Dor is a new Double Shard but Splintered", Virtuous Traveler started from there and pushed the Dor's birth as "An attempt of Aona and Skai to merge their shards as a result of their love", in this context...Odium rushed on Sel because the Dor would be a being capable of greater power than him.
  7. This is indeed true, but you could not influence much someone you don't know...unless you store some volatile minimal Connections everyone make with the surround people.
  8. If I don't remember wrong the "Odium targeted only the multiple Shards planets" is just a Virtuous Traveler's theory
  9. Soulcast turns matter to other kind of matters, it's fueled by Stormlight in the right recipe and need to overcome both Investiture's interference and Cognitive's defense of the subject. More the desired matter is near to the right Essence, easier become to Soulcast it. With enough Investiture EVERYTHING may be Soulcasted and depending on the Subject's Cognitive Resistence this need of Investiture may change. For example : - Stick offers a great Cognitive's defense because it was always a Stick, his own "life" was almost "I am a tree, I am a stick". It is quite hard to allow him to change. - The Boat otherwise is of course a bigger object (but Shallan didn't change the whole boat's matter) but it "lived" a life linked to the Human and in some way it was more connected to the Sailor. The boad offered a lesser Cognitive Defense because "It wants to help the men within itself". We have also to notice: - Shallan has not the same amount of Stormlight in both cases - Shallan is not a Skilled Soulcaster. Her success or failure can't be taken as relevant proofs.
  10. This is a simple concept in my mind but I have problems to clearly explain, I will try: A Shard is a being of power (a lot of it), it may be spread in many places/beings/objects but every bit of his power is still part of the Shard, because the Shard's power is mostly Spiritual and the Spiritual ream doesn't care of space and distance. A Shard may create Splinter of his power also when the Shard is whole (example in Roshar, Braize and Nalthis). For example there were Spren made by H&C's Investiture also before Honor's murder...at that time all the Spren were still part of Honor also if they were quite self-aware part of him. I think you may see it as cells in a living organism...the cell may performe their task/duty but they are still part of a "greater being". Now, when a Shard is Splintered instead, you "kill" the "greater being", all the cells are still there but they are no more part of the whole. Of course the analogy stops here, because for a biological life...the cells die. While the Investiture can't be created or destroyed. The outcome of this is a lot of "piece" of Investiture, the Investiture for his own nature develops Sentience without a Mind who guide it. So this "pieces" began to become actual self-aware being as you see with Spren, Seon and Skaze (technically the right name is "splinters" but I don't know if you can call it "Splinter" before they develops a mind). Odium is aware of the risk of leaving a Shard whole and untouched without a Vessel. The Shard may performe some kind of weird things. It may develop a mind of his own, it may began to search a new Vessel and He may auto-Splinter itself. To avoid the first two possibilities, He locks the defeated Shards into the Cognitive Realm were they are pressed and this offer to them no chance of developing a mind or find a new Vessel. A Splintered Shard could be repaired (by a WoB) but we don't know how this may be performed. So this was an huge introduction (sorry), but your questions: As I said before, Investiture can't be created or destroyed. It could only change status. This mean that after a Splintering of a Shard, you have yet the same amount of power, but not more part of a single Spiritual being. Like you said it's mostly the same thing happened with Adonalsium (but without knowing what Adonalsium was...it's hard to say more This is hard to answer, in the on screen cases the Vessels always died, but the answer is "the Vessel may survive the Splintering of his Shard" (there is a WoB about), of course in the case of an Odium's murder...I imagine Odium will simply crush the powerless Sliver once the Shard is gone. The Splintering is reversible but it's hard to do and we don't actually know how to performe it. Probably a Shard could do it, BUT it's dangerous....mixing Intents isn't something so easily to balance and a Shard knows it very well. Notice that mostly Shards could be stopped by their own Intent in performing this kind of repair. On a last note, a Shard may disinvest and move from planet to planet...but there are some conseguences in doing it. @rock soup Cultivation is alive and whole as a Shard, She may create Splinter of his power but this splinters are still part of her (like the old Radiants' Spren were part of both H&C when H&C were both whole) and this didn't diminish her power....This is the reason Odium could not simply crush Roshar. Cultivation opposes him
  11. Yes I know...The mine was an attempt to figure how this may work in practice. IF the Nalthian Life Sense is actual "feel the Connection near you" because the Breath improve your connection to the living beings. Storing/Tapping Connections to people would result in spectrum of different feel in a observer. If you store your Connection the people near you will "sense" you as a Drab on Nalthis (notice the effect is less than that, because regular Human on Nalthis have a Breath). When you tap Connection the people will "sense" you as they have more Breath and you are not a Drab. Of course this explaination is still very faulty, because F-Duralluminium's description talks of "friendship and trust", so probably it simply trick your Soul to believe there are a long term relationship between the Ferring and you (or the opposite)
  12. The Returning is different by a "simple" healing also if the subject was physical (but nothing more) dead. A Returned is something that happen when the deadman become (for his own or with Endowment's help...we don't know) a Cognitive Shadow and Endowment give him the chance to return and provide a Divine Breath to use as a link between the corpse and the Cognitive Shadow. The Healing instead is simply giving enough Healing to someone who died but has still his ties to the physical Realm to regenerate/heal the physical. From the Cosmere's Healing the status of the body is quite irrilevant so, the difference between a scar healed and a resurrection of a recent beheaded man is simply in the amount of required Investiture.
  13. I may understand that your point is to propose "Spren" as Roshar's Focus and the counterproofs to Gemstone as focus is needed. But why did you not mention the other candidate ? (I ask it because it's the one I actual see as main candidate for Roshar's focus) The "bonds" as Roshar's focus is a theory well know on the forum. I think it's a more elegant idea instead to propose the "power" (and a Splinter is just this...living power) as Roshar's way to access other powers. PS: For a Realmatic reason, I think we may remove Gemstones from the Candidates of Roshar's Focus. But the topic isn't on them.
  14. @Koldun you are mixing together two different things: Indeed the "coincidences" of the 16 in many many Scadrial's events is a deliberate choice of Preservation. He wanted a sign who could not be influenced by culture, or scales. He choosed the 16 because the Allomancy (and other metallic arts) is 16 based and the mankind would be able to recognize it (thanks TLR to hide some metals and give to the men an hard time) BUT the Metallic Arts are naturally 16 based...Notice how Ruin has the same control of Preservation over this. It's the same reason the number 10 arise on the Roshar's magic. It's a natural outcome of the Shardic Interation with the Shardworld they invest into. Of course Scadrial case is a bit special, because the Shards actually made it. So it's possible (but both the Shards will influence it) that Ruin & Preservation made the planet to get a specific outcome.
  15. I don't think, Copper shield from Cognitive effects, while F-Durallumin is Spiritual in nature...But we have no official informations. I don't think you may do something like that...Connection didn't work in this way. I think you may just give Drab-like feel (if you read Warbreaker) When you compound...You gain only the Feruchemical effect of the metal, not the allomantic one. You may see it, in the Alloy of Law where a Compounder actually burn regular metal instead of his Metalmind and think about how months/years are passed from the last time he see is Allomancy at work. This is debated...As far as we know nothing like Savant exist in Feruchemy. Of course your body may adjust itself to be constantly exposed to weird amount of attributes but it's not like the savantilm where your actual Soul is twisted to gain "other effects from allomancy". Notice that this "body adjust" may happen without Compount. For example, an Iron Feruchemist who spent all his life at 70% of his weight. may develop less muscle because the body need less power to stay still. Same thing with a F-Gold, probably the immune system become lazy for the extra Health. There are multiple kind of Connections... To beings, to place, to time, to gods. The effects of Copper and Bronze extend beyond Scadrial's Magic systems. But for the hidden working of Investiture I can't honestly tell you what Magics are detectable or witch one you may halt with Copper. You don't need to performe any task to store an Attribute in metalmind. Of course the storing may lead to side effects. For example like you write, store wakefullness leads you into a coma-like status (without any kind of restoration). But you may store Speed while you are at bed, or store sight with your eye closed. The inner Feruchemy's work is "you remove somthing from the body/mind/soul and your body/mind/soul needs to overcome this lost". We don't know...We may assemble all the Shards, but the outcome may be or not be an Adonalsium-like being. I think we have a WoB about an hypotetical Alluminium Savant would be able to purge his body to all the impurities. Notice that burning alluminium is usually a way to remove from the body the magical influeces that affect it. I don't think Nicrosil affects Metalmind...but I can't actually find a reference to this. The Metal have to be in the Allomancer's system. This mean piercing too may be burned (but it's hard to figure out the piercing as metal reserves. Miles actually burned Metalminds all the time. Notice he may turn gold in his stomach in goldmind and be ready to burn there. He has almost all his external Goldmind full of Health and a way to generate new charge without the need to remove them, melt them and eat them. As other said, the Shard's Intent is something NOW intrinsec in the Shard. We can't know if the Shard has them from the beginning or if the first Vessels influenced them. Ati (Ruin's holder) was a kind man, but Ruin isn't evil...it's entropy. Ati may be a generous but pessimistic guy. Someone who saw potential in the change. Short answer: we don't know. Odium could pick up other Shards (or piece of their powers) but He didn't to not be affected by the Shards' Intents. So instead of improving his own power, He simply Splinter the other Shards. Notice also that Harmony is the explicit in-world prove of a Vessel who hold 2 Shards. The compounder gains only the Feruchemical effect (I think I answered this in a previous point). I don't see the link...there are people who think Alluminium is the Adonalsium's metal (also if honestly to me it's a quite no sense theory), the relationship Alluminium-Odium is still more impossible. It may be possible but notice bendalloy is expensive and the Atium is no more avaliable
  16. Another Wob on our favorite Evil destroyer: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/5p4ydj/oathbringer_spoilers_stormlight_three_update_6/ddgn19c/?context=3
  17. Like @Spoolofwhoolsaid Kel's mind is safe and his Soul too. He need just Connections to the physical realm...this is something we already figured it monthis ago (Harmony himself explained it). The problem is yet how to Spike a Shadow, there are already topics on this problems in Secret History subforum and almost all the problems go to "Could you spike a Shadow ?"
  18. Thanks @Oversleep I had an hard time to find it...and indeed there is a part between the two WoB who made my point falls. Sorry for the error
  19. It was in a double WoB (I am searching it now to post), the first question was if you store "mistborn power" in Nicrisil or you have to store all the 16 and the second was about tapping the Nicrosilmind to gain more power than the one who stored it inside.
  20. Actually Nicrosil doesn't do it...or to be honest it allow you to store and tap your Innate Investiture. But you can't use it to become a stronger allomancer (because I think The Voiceless One was actually talking of what we call "reverse compounding"). So also if I don't think F-Lerasium store Allomantic Strength, it's still a possibility.
  21. Possible but we don't know if Spiking out something the first time leave the guy "spiritual messy" for a specific second Spiking out. We know that also if Hemaurgy is matter of precision, you still rip off the wanted part and "something more" (functional useless but still you ruin something more than just removing a power for example)...We need to decide if you are actually capable of stole something else (probably it's something different case to case). I know you didn't talk about Soul Healing (also if honestly with the Medallion tech it would be the best way to performe Hemalurgy without permanent loss) but I mentioned it for sake of the whole scenario
  22. For the cosmere's afterlife mechanics...I am more worried about the "destroy the mind". Notice for example that also regular Shardblade cuts the Soul
  23. I quote myself because Peter read my question to Brandon and expanded the answer a bit (three tweets put together) Peter: Oh, I think Aluminum would stop Shardblades from magical cutting. But if it's too thin like foil, a sword... would cut it anyway. What I'm arguing is that something else that Shardblades don't cut doesn't need... to necessarily be made of aluminum, for various reasons. Me: For example Invested objects (metalmind, spike, ecc) or polestones (from some SA's Quote) ? Peter: RAFO After made the last question I realized that I swapped "Polestones can't be Soulcasted" with "Polestones can't be cutted" so I din't expect a RAFO and neither an answer at all. But I think if Polestone can't be cutted by a Shardblade, almost every Alethi will know. <sarcasm> Or maybe the "Luckly sphere myth" began when a commoner's sphere stopped a Shardblade....Like the bible and the bullet </sarcasm>
  24. The WoB suggests that Hemalurgy mostly result in death for Soul Ripping effect also in physical relative harmless points. You may survive Hemalurgy...but it's more a matter of luck than else. Notice also that if also you find a stable way to make someone survive Hemalurgy. The result would be a poor being drab-like (maybe thanks to some Healing while the Hemalurgy is performed or other trick), if you try to steal again from this poor man, you surelly kill him (you could not have less than a Soul threesold). In this case I am avoiding to considerate Soul Healing, that made the Ripped Soul grown again to be stolen again and again...but this isn't what you pointed out before.
  25. Identity is only the way Investiture may work (or not work) with other Investiture. Without it, you will bypass every kind of matching problem. Notice that if this doesn't work...Medallion neither will work because also there you woll need "a spiritual connection"
