  1. Well, probably easiest would be to just meet up at the Shadows of Self release party. There'll be people there for a week before waiting in line. It's a nice chance to meet some people from 17th shard that you haven't seen before in real life. Then we may be meeting together at the end of October. Maybe not. We'll see what we decide about it eventually.
  2. Well, kind of. It's not an official club, but we meet up once a month and eat pizza and chat.
  3. So is everyone good for this Wednesday?
  4. I'm of the idea that Spren are causing people to be broken, in order to bond with them. The amount of anguish, on the part of the Stormfather, and present in the Shardblades, doesn't seem to agree with mutual agreed suicide. It seems to be an attacked. The spren that the Alethi Shardbearer heard during the duel with Adolin and Kaladin heard said "You killed me." Think of Kaladin. Think of Shallan. They are both so very very close to their spren. What would cause them to abandon them? And not only abandon them but betray them? The only thing that makes sense to me is that Pattern and Syl either were aware of and approved, or helped cause the breaking that allowed Pattern and Syl to bond with Shallan and Kaladin. How would Kaladin react if he knew that Syl helped cause Tien's death? Or in the death of his men? The decoded epigraph from the diagram says "Hold the secret that broke the Knights Radiant. You may need it to destroy the new orders when they return." I believe that this is the Secret- this thing of wicked eminence- the fact that the spren are the ones that cause or encourage the shattering of souls to allow them to become conscious. EDIT- Plus, it makes for a more interesting twist for the readers than mass suicide on the part of the spren.
  5. I think what you're looking for is here: There seems to be quite a few people!
  6. I'll be at BYU (which is in Provo, not SLC. )
  7. I bet that speaking the words has to do with the language section of the brain/intelligence. An odd example is that in our world, when this section of the brain goes down, people can make noises, but they can't talk. Mute or deaf people have troubles "speaking" sign language. That means that this section is in charge of "speech", even when it's not spoken. I'd imagine that it'd be the same with the Ideals. Although it seems different for Awakeners. You can jump over the voice requirement with enough breath, but Suseborn couldn't just write the Commands and have them work. Hmm.
  8. Hello Sanderfans! Many of us are fairly excited about both Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning coming out soon. That's two books more in Scadrial, and we get more hats, more allomancy, and hopefully another broadsheet. Tor's recently posted that they've printed out the ARCs (Advanced Reader Copies, for reviewers and stuff), and now it looks like they're planning on doing something with them. Tor is having a Sweepstakes for an ARC of Shadows of Self and a few other books on their little-known Tor/Forge blog. All you have to do is sign up for their newsletter. It's pretty easy to sign up, and you'd get a chance to read Shadows of Self months before anyone else does! It'd be a blessing, but a curse- for who would you talk to about it? Also, it's a chance to read some other ARCs of books coming out this fall. Who wants to turn down the chance for free books? So go on there and sign up! The winner will be announced on the 24th, so good luck to you all.
  9. Cultivation's what surprises me. I didn't realize she was so actively opposing
  10. While not a meme, I feel like it's fitting of the humor of this thread. EDIT- fixing... Here's the video in the meantime. https://www.youtube.com/embed/DLeoHC0ofBI It does have slight spoilers for the whole cosmere. Just so you know.
  11. On the Clod question asked last batch, Brandon's answered that Clod is indeed Arsteel. That's why Vasher is revolted, and why Clod seems as good as a swordsman as Denth. Just give me a sec to find a WOB...
  12. Ulgh. Can you imagine someone tapping one of those? Worst thing ever.
  13. And our next meeting will be on August 19th (a Wednesday), at 7, and we will likely be playing Cosmere cards against Humanity! It should be a lot of fun!
  14. Also, I'll go ahead and bring the pizza for tonight.
  15. Yep. Good game everyone! And yes, i was one of the inactives. Somewhere around cycle 3 or 4 I was inactive for most of the cycle, and then of course when I dropped out and dowanx took my place. I think one of the things that lead to it being an Eliminator game instead of a faction game was the lynches. That meant that to some extent we had to work together in order to get in a clear kill. The most obvious target was Discovery, since that was the clear common enemy. I also decided that I would post the rest of what I wrote when I was in the doc by myself.... Here's me strategizing:
  16. Oh man. I've got to compile all of these. Then, when I need a good thing, I'll reread the Stormeme Archive.
  17. The 28th works for me! I'm pretty sure there's some pretty conference rooms upstairs that we can use. I'll scout it out and make sure.
  18. We could do it another day of the week. I'll be out of town till the 26th though.
  19. Does the 28th (Next next Tuesday) work for people?
  20. There's a chance. If you really want him to do it, you should contact your local bookstore and ask them to invite him to do a signing while he's in town. Then again, Brandon's pretty busy, and he may not have time to do the Worldcon AND extra siginings. But that's probably your best shot.
  21. Yep. This is to confirm the fact that Dow is pitch hitting for me and has access to my docs, etc. Have fun killing each other guys! EDIT- In Cycle 8, I was bibed to Moderation, all on my lonesome. Kasimir was kind enough to give me a doc, so I did some roleplaying. I'll go ahead and post the first bit now. There's more, but it includes strategizing, so I'll probably post it at the end of the game. Ishtar stood tall, talking and plotting to the best of his abilities with the Glory faction (Glory be forever!) when he realized that a note had been subtly placed in his pocket. He wasn't quite sure where it had come from- from another Glory faction member? From one of the many servants that entered in and out, serving the needs of the many persons of the Glory faction? Ishtar, normally alert, had been distracted by the attempts to find a way to both rid themselves of the pesky Discovery faction and somehow come up on top of those of the Heritage faction. But the note intrigued him. It had said "Come to the room in the center of the palace, at the place most central to the empire. You will be greatly rewarded." A place at the center of the palace? Could it be? The slowly disappearing Moderation faction? He was quite loyal to the Glory faction, but loyalties were easy enough to change, especially since it seemed that this new group could prove to appreciate his efforts more than his own. He knew several people from the Moderation faction that had seen the light of Glory. Or, rather, the coin pouch of Glory. And now it looked like Ishtar was going to see the coin pouch of Moderation. He smiled. He walked in the dead of night to the center of the palace, and noticed a door that wasn't a Garish yellow-red like Glory, or the intense blue of Heritage, but a royal purple. Moderation indeed. Ishtar thought as he knocked on the door. No one answered. What in the name of the Moon.... Ishtar knocked again, a little louder. Still no one answered. Ishtar wondered if he had the right door. He had obtained some maps that had served him well in his time here at the palace, and it indicated that this spot was the center. Ishtar tried the knob of the door, and finding it free, turned it and opened the door. A line of light illuminated a line of the empty room. It appeared clean and well kept- definitely not the dusty storage closet that his map had indicated. In fact, he saw a hearth in the back of the room that was still glowing- there had been people here recently. He closed the door behind him, and approached the fire. He began to blow and stroke the embers back to life. A fire would serve the purpose of warming the cool room and illuminating its content. The fire now hissing and popping comfortably, Ishtar noticed a wooden chair and a table in a back corner of the room, with a large round bag on it. He quickly ran over and opened the bag- it was filled to the brim with gold coins. It didn't matter now if he was part of Discovery or not- these coins would make him rich. Far richer than he had been before. He then noticed a piece of paper on the table, and began to read. Ishtar, We have observed you for a while, and have found in you what we wish for the future of the faction. You are capable and intelligent, and your mentality to try and broker alliances between the factions, to focus on the duplicitous Discovery faction who are the largest threat, is something that we admire. With that being said. we welcome you to the most Magnificent faction of Moderation. Though our numbers are now few, we are strong, and we maintain our presence and our funds. Though many weaker willed individuals have left, we know that you will be strong and will help this faction rise to greatness! However, it has come to our attention that our numbers, already dwindling, will continue to diminish. There is a small, but very possible chance, that by the time that our note and these funds have reached you, you will be the last one in Discovery. We hope this will not be the case, but in case it does, we trust in your capable hands to lead the Moderation faction on to its Magnificent future. We trust in you the funds of Moderation. Use them wisely. Make the kingdom know and believe in Moderation once again. May Moderation rise from the flames like a Phoenix from the ashes! Our trust be in you, Moderation Faction Ishtar sat down. Could it be? The time he had been waiting his whole life had finally came. He was now a faction leader. And it was empty. Well, not entirely. I still have this sack of money to keep me company. He needed a plan. If he was going to make this work, he needed to know who he would try to recruit to help Moderation survive. Kipper? He knew he had a solid head on his shoulders, and a keen eye for strategy. It was the reason why he had personally bribed him away from Moderation. Who else was left? He had brought a few notes with him from his time in Glory (funny how in such a short time he saw it as so distant) and started to examine them. He would do his best to help his faction survive first, and then and only then begin to flourish. Ishtar had a lot of work to do.
  22. I've read it before- there's some interesting things in there, and I enjoyed reading it. Hoid's a PoV character, but this is the cosmere still in its infancy of being developed so some things have changed. I honestly didn't make the Bridge 4 connection till just now. The Shattered Plains is still there, but the resolution is different than the resolution in WoK/WoR. A good test for you might be Mythwalker. It was a story that wasn't really working out, so Brandon just stopped halfway through. He put it online though, so you can read it. If you enjoyed reading it, than I think you'll enjoy Dragonsteel. If not, you probably will not like to read Dragonsteel either. There's some things that got cannibalized, but others that weren't. Same with Dragonsteel.
  23. So, let's figure out one for this round. These are the Discovery members, right? Zephyr Paranoid King Alvron. Do any of them have 2 lives? Or do each only have one life? And if I was a GM, and I was choosing someone to hold the sword, I'd probably choose Zephyr. Paranoid King has been out in the open too long, Alvron is a really old player, so I bet that they would come under suspicion first. Or it could've been done randomly, and we have no idea who has it. We'll see what happens.
  24. I feel like the reason why Kasamir did what he did is that this is a Sanderson ELIMINATION game. I assume that there were far too many people going for a more peaceful option (that of converting everyone to one team), which while allowing for more people to win, is a little more boring. Kasamir had threatened repeatedly that he would give them a sword if people weren't willing to play ruthlessly for their faction, and people apparently weren't, so he gave the Discovery members the sword.
