  1. When you're reading a steampunk mystery novel and answer the characters' questions of "why is this part of town so crime-ridden?" with a lookup of Marasi's whole speech about the broken windows thing. She would've been very upset by how the police force in that book handled itself.
  2. When you're reading a middle-grade novel and realize a couple things... in the prequel (that was written as #5 of the series, I was reading #2), they describe the older sister as expected to have talent for magic while the younger sister, who is the story's focus, actually has the talent. In #2, it says that the second sister was older and they always knew who had the talent and who didn't. ...? My first thought was "Brandon would never make that mistake, unless it wasn't a mistake. *short intake of breath* " Then I started to brainstorm ways that memories could have been changed between the prequel and the current book.
  3. What quote did you use? I can think of several that might work
  4. This would probably fit into Bad Sanderson Jokes or something (I think there's a pun thread...?) Anyway, that is funny
  5. My friend's 18th birthday party was last night and it was mostly Sanderson-themed. Most of the gifts he received from his family were the new posters of the star systems (like, all of them) and a few other art pieces. We started to set up the Mistborn Adventure Game for playing later* (SO EXCITED). He had party favors with little plastic slinkies, bugs, and bubbles with a quote attached: "I've always been confident in my immaturity." My friend is awesome. *on a side note, one of my friends has never read Mistborn. Was anyone else in this situation, and what did they/you get questions about the most?
  6. This one. Doesn't mean I don't love it but it is a little... stuck-in-your-head-able.
  7. I collect these little guys ... (it's a hilarious video anyway you should watch it) I could see Sanderson-themed ones really working. Well, probably, anyway. Doesn't stop me from wishing.
  8. I realized today that the only Sanderson books I do not own are BoM, all Alcatraz and non-Cosmere short stories and novellas. I'm closer than I thought to perfection
  9. Or when there's a question about metaphors on a final. They gave a little example, and I answered the true/false question, then wrote off to the side: "That's a simile. David thinks he's bad at metaphors but he's actually bad at similes. Ex: "it was like one lumberjack had eaten a lumberjack to make one very big lumberjack".*" I cited the Reckoners series at the asterisk.
  10. Well, that too, but I must keep my delusions alive. So shhh
  11. So... my sister is taking an American Lit class and needed to stop at the library to find a book. I asked her what the criteria were, and apparently it's just "the author has to have been born in America" or something like that. So of course I suggest Sanderson. She gets that a lot, though, and wasn't affected. It was only after we went into the library and she couldn't find the Louis L'Amour book she wanted (aside: HOW?! THeRE aRe LiKE a mILlioN) that she asked me if I would buy her a Twix bar if she read Mistborn. I told her absolutely. We went to the store and I got her a fancy yogurt instead but she still had a treat. She is now reading Mistborn for a school project. I did tell her how distinctive the setting and plot and characters and other symbols were, though, and how easy an artistic project could be. I love my sister. She is willing to give up hundreds of hours of her time for a little Twix.
  12. and return to men the Shards they once bore. The Knights Radiant must stand again. *choirs sing from the clouds* *orchestras perform perfect impromptu while their instruments glow ominously* *millions look to the sky* *choirs sing more*
  13. When you write an entire rhetorical analysis essay on Stick...
  14. I saw Christmas cards with two different Santa designs at the AU release - Santa in a Mistcloak and Santa with Shards (stormlight kind). They are adorable and I want to use these this year.
  15. I had the same experience with HP! I read all seven 16+ times, and lots of the supplemental material, before finally deciding to pick up the huge, stale-looking book my mom got me for Easter. And now HP pales. I still love it, of course, and they're very good, just like all the Percy Jackson and other random YA book series, but they're just... not Sanderson. He's in a class all his own. Looks like you're covered in cosmere material (especially after getting Arcanum Unbounded.) Have you tried Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians? Those are lighter, but still hugely entertaining. How about The Rithmatist? I think that should be turned into a touchscreen video game (seriously, it could be really cool.) The biggest non-cosmere work is probably the Reckoners trilogy, starting with Steelheart. If you haven't read those yet, go to your library posthaste. Not even kidding. You have many hours of happy insanity ahead. Mwhahahaha.
  16. The way I understood it was that the myth was a story he told that was somehow a metaphor or parable or something for how worldhopping works. I first thought of the Uvara people (where adventurers build an awesome ship then land on an island where nobody can do anything wrong because they're killed and stuff), but then realized that was the story in WoK... so I don't know which he's talking about, actually.
  17. Lovely. (Like I said, I really didn't know where to put that anyway XD) Also, sorry that I apparently repeated things people have already heard from the general Q&A session but I'm too lazy to change it.
  18. I don't know where to put this... so I guess I'll put it here! I got some interesting information from the release party of Arcanum Unbounded, both from the Q&A and when my friends talked to him. (I get flustered, okay?!) I don't have specific wording but I did take notes so it's all pretty much straight from the source. Cosmere and general stuff, then Mistborn stuff, then Stormlight (sorry, couldn't get the spoiler tags to work quite like I wanted.)
  19. I always heard - or assumed, I guess - that Hoid was looking for the Well, too. It wasn't ever in what Scadrians called Terris, because of the LR's messing with the geography of the planet. He heard the rumors and whispers, too, and thought it was in Terris just like everybody else. I swear I saw that in some WoB at some point... guess I was off?
  20. You chose an awesome week to join. That Cosmere 101 thread is awesome (IIRC there's an updated Cosmere 102...). If there's stuff you're confused about even after reading, you can use the Cosmere Q&A part of the forums to answer your questions. They're nice. In addition, the Coppermind is an awesome resource, if you're not wary of spoilers. They have a good overview of the cosmere, too. Have a wonderful stay!
