[OB] Full Book Reactions / Full Spoilers Thread
StormingTexan replied to Chaos's topic in Stormlight Archive
It is very possible that the explanation for the Recreance is really as simple as we have learned. Let's face it we have a slight tendency to build things up here. I just cant help but feel like there is still more to it. For one Jasnah mentions that she learned about it from Hoid and that could have just been a teaser I guess but I fell like she knows more and that is why it was mentioned. The revelation that their surges could destroy this world too was still not enough for the Skybreakers to disband. I feel like there is some significance with the sibling and Urithiru as well and some tie in I just don't know what. Am I just not wanting to take the explanation given because I built up the big mystery so much? Anyone else feel similar? -
[OB] Characters that surprised you in OB
StormingTexan replied to mariapapadia's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'd say the biggest surprise had to be Elhokar. I just didn't like him in the first two books and thought more than anything he was there to progress Kaladin along in his oaths. I thought he was a sniveling entitled drunkard and was ready for Dalinar to take over his spot. Then this book comes along and we see him start to turn in to the leader he was meant to be. We see his softer side worried about his family and his kingdom. Then he dies... Thanks Brandon you made me like a character then you killed him off and no less right before he was about to say the first oath. I was also a little surprised on how much more I liked some of the Bridge 4 guys. I always liked Lopen and Rock but the POVs really made me connect with the rest. -
First off cogratz on adding the future sharders ladies! 1- I got a little misty eyed when Elhokar died which if you told me I would even care if he died before this book I would have thought you were crazy. He was finally becoming the leader he should be and then he starts the first oath and bam! 2- The scene where Renarin gives Dalinar the bottle and they hug I will admit I full on ugly cried. I'm a dad and stuff like this just gets me right in the feels. 3- Teft's oath.. I am a recovering gaming addict and 12 stepper and that one just got me. Probably a lot of why #2 got me as well. Edit: 4- When Lift shows up to help Dalinar when all looked lost. I think this was more of happy tears.

[OB] My problem with Jasnah
StormingTexan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
He also said Which is the basis of Jasnah's argument that it should be tried before killing all the Parshman. Yes though I agree with you she has more information than we do from her time with Hoid and he gave her real drawings of the Heralds so she can identify them so he must have given Jasnah sound reasoning on why this may be an option. -
(OB) We need to talk about Eshonai
StormingTexan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
I was actually pretty surprised by her death. I was pretty indifferent about her as a character although I thought she was necessary so we saw the Parshendi POV. There has to be some reasoning behind it and I think it goes beyond allowing Venli to be in the spotlight but no idea what. I am trying to figure out what we will gain from her flashbacks but I am confident Brandon has a good plan for this. I know that having flashback chapters does not mean the book will be mostly focused on the same character and their growth but that is what we have seen so far so having a hard time envisioning how this will work. Hey it will make it different though right? Eshonai was my least anticipated flashback character as well so maybe this set of unusual circumstances will change my mind. -
[OB] My problem with Jasnah
StormingTexan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'd argue that with the knowledge she has at the time this is the most logical course of action even if it is a gamble it is the lesser of two evils. -
I am really hoping Brandon decides to do Szeth's book next. I am sure Brandon will figure out a way to make Eshonai's book awesome but the death thing has me really turned off on it atm.

[OB] My problem with Jasnah
StormingTexan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
I can see why some do not like Jasnah as she does come across as cold and condescending at times. She is not a character that gives you the warm fuzzes at all (except the scene with Renarin which was pretty heart warming). I love her though. Kaladin is obviously a fan favorite and in some ways an opposite to Jasnah. He is extremely driven on his emotions where Jasnah uses her logic as a driving force (my guess is this may in part be to her "insanity" from her youth). She has been researching what is going on for years now and in a way is being redeemed when I am sure many people would have thought her a crackpot. She sees a problem and takes a logical (although incorrect at times such as killing Heralds) action to solve the problem. Kaladin in contrast is extremely driven by his emotions and thus creates an emotional bond with us. I thought the scene with the two of them was perfect and true to character. Jasnah is Spock and Kaladin is Kirk. You need both. The interaction with Shallan did annoy me I will admit. I understand it and again think it was perfectly in character but that does not mean I had to like it. In the end I really think Jasnah just wanted to help progress Shallan and her methods may not have been the best. Of course Shallan is kinda a hot mess and if I was Jasnah I might have wanted to knock her down a peg or two as well. -
He for sure is pretty deadly to unmade as they would be killed in all three realms and unable to return. Edit also regarding killing a shard there it this WoB https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=PEP_2011_PEPANNRES&prodType=table

Haha I am misremembering it and making assumptions.. So yeah once Nightblood is wielded he draws on the investiture of the wielder if they run out of investiture they would also die. I was assuming it would take longer to kill an Unmade than a regular person or less invested person but I have no factual evidence to back that up. Interestingly though if someone wielded while "ridding the storm" like Kaladin did they could draw him for a very long time. Edit: Nightblood's "investiture drain" on the wielder also speeds up the longer it is drawn so that was where I was thinking if it took longer to kill an Unmade you would need equal investiture (which is wrong you would need more) but I do not know that it takes any longer.

That is correct so the wielder would theoretically need to have as much investiture as the unmade or shard in order to not die as I understand it.

[OB] Crackpot theory about Roshar
StormingTexan replied to The Invested Beard's topic in Stormlight Archive
Pretty sure it's turtles all the way down. -
I agree with this. Just like they would call Nightblood a spren the listeners would more than likely call use of any magic surgebinding. So I think we shouldn't get too hung up on the term in the literal sense. Speaking of the Oathpact now that we know why the Last Desolation was held off for 4500 years it sure does seem convenient that when it was abandoned all the Heralds lived except Taln.
-
He is Final Fantasy's "Hoid" and he is usually associated with Airships.
-
I think they need to find Cid.
-
So does the above WoBs mean Malata is not really a Dustbringer or did Brandon just forget or hadn't created her at the time of this WoB? She was pretty obvious.
-
This also makes the most sense to me as well and why I think through the process of elimination he assumes Ash is either a Willshaper or Dustbringer and this scene should not be used as any kind of proof Ash is (or will be) a Dustbringer.
-
I think it is possible Ash will become a Dustbringer but this scene really bothered me. I just do not see how Dalinar could have known that. I get Taln but how would he have known who Ash is besides the SF telling him she is a divinity and then making the assumption she is a Dustbringer? Unless he is just using the process of elimination which would make Ash either a Dustbringer or Willshaper which is plausible. The other possibility is Dalinar's ascension and/or third ideal granted him the ability to sense this. In all explanations the scene is really left to a ton of speculation. Would have been nice if he named the rest of the orders but I guess Brandon wanted this to be deliberately vague.

I want to see a lot for from the three things I think we know the least about. Cultivation, Aimians and Shin. -
[OB] Full Book Reactions / Full Spoilers Thread
StormingTexan replied to Chaos's topic in Stormlight Archive
That’s a good question but she did say “apparently the storming Assassin in White” which makes me think someone told her who he was off screen. Man you reminded me of all the unanswered questions from part one I forgot about.. -
[OB] Favourite OB moment / Character ?
StormingTexan replied to Stromblessed's topic in Stormlight Archive
And some people don’t like her. I just don’t get it. Yeah she’s goofy sometimes but she’s clinch when it counts (in a hilarious way too).
