Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Orlion Blight replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
I'll have to remember that. I don't plan on ever needing it again... the Wasp Wars have been over for some time, now... but one never knows. They return when vigilance is low. Job searching is terrible... almost as terrible as Ohio! -
Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Orlion Blight replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
Back in my day, we had to battle them wasps every day. They was attracted to the Bobcat that we used to haul goods around. Every morning, I'd have to bring out a mallet and spray bottle of water and slay/drive away the wasps from the nest they were always making in the Bobcat, since the boss did not allow Raid! on the property. I really wish part of that story was hyperbole. -

Relative value of entertainment???
Orlion Blight replied to Delightful's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I believe that's what news organizations do, though. They either have a political agenda or just are vendors of mindless yellow journalism (probably simplifying, but it's a casual discussion, so sue me and see if it holds in court! ) Essentially, they provide the "news" to help paint their worldview and where they think it should go. Really, the trick is to distinguish between the news organizations "catching you up on the plot of history" and when they start pontificating on "what it all means". With modern news and blogs and so forth, however, all the above tends to be blended. Reading can help one distinguish the difference, but only if you are widely read (meaning, you read different "view-points"). You can actually see Brandon Sanderson do this: if he wants to write an atheist character, he seeks out atheist people and their views. He does not rely on religious commentary to tell him how atheist are (and in fact demonstrated in the book the folly of doing so). So wide reading (not necessarily read a lot) is beneficial. But I stand by my original assertion that the mere act of reading a book is "soooo good!" I like it... I really can't function if I don't read, but like in the case of Lark's friend, one's utility and value can be manifested outside of book lernin' And if it's just about entertainment/avoiding thoughts/passing time until our inevitable demise, then one form of entertainment is just as good as another... and you should choose forums -
Relative value of entertainment???
Orlion Blight replied to Delightful's topic in Entertainment Discussion
No, reading is not necessarily "superior". That seems to be a false equivalency based on the push to "get kids to read more" without actually really defining why this should be so or what benefit (if any) people can derive from reading. If we are talking about mere entertainment value, it's subjective and will depend on person to person, much like ice cream flavor preferences. If it's about stimulating the imagination, once again that depends on the individual person. When I was young, I remember my imagination being fired up by Garfield comics. If it's about art value/educational/instructional value not all books are equal. Ender's Game may have entertainment value, but it does not approach the artistic value of The Divine Comedy (which gets to the "real literature" vs speculative fiction debate. Yes, a lot of "real literature" is much better than most speculative fiction, but that value only comes into play if "mere entertainment" value is not the deciding factor). -
David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor, is married to Georgia Moffet (who plays the Doctor's "daughter"). Georgia Moffet, in turn, is the daughter of Peter Davison who is the Fifth Doctor from Classic Doctor Who.

Earthbound- by Copperwire. First rap/hip-hop album I've bought. And first one I've listened to of my own volition. It's a space opera that also apparently incorporates the ethereal music of the spheres (as revealed by Fourier analysis!) in some of the songs. Almost done through my first listen, and I'm enjoying it thoroughly.

How I feel about those pesky college dreams:

Sounds like you could have a lot of fun with that! Booming "Fee-fi-foo-fum", refusing to be served by waiters named David, complaining that "these puny human portions are not sufficient to sate the hunger of a race of warriors!" The possibilities are endless! Must be hippy, all-natural, organic chicken! That, and you can blame your parents. Apparently the Dutch are the tallest people in the world, so you could yell "Why couldn't at least one of you have been from the Netherlands?! Did you even think about how that would affect me?" before you leave in a huff and slam the front door.

It's all that added hormones in chicken, I tells ya! It's creating a race of giants!

Good clarification on Harmony. I imagine a lot of us kinda read that and think of some sort of state of Zen or Nirvana, like Ying-Yang... but that does not have to be the case. I also think it's good to note that when a Shard becomes "Invested" (ha) in a planet, it makes it harder for that Shard to leave. I imagine Harmony is heavily invested on Scadrial, so a conflict with Odium would have to be initiated by Odium's arrival. And, I suspect, Odium was forced to Invest in the Greater Roshar system, which traps him in that system until he manages to sufficiently destroy Roshar. This might also explain the discrepancy between Sel being somewhat advanced while Roshar is in constant danger of being annihilated. This leads us to a couple possible outcomes: 1) Odium, being tied to Roshar, will fail because Roshar will continue to be preserved. This will prevent Odium from escaping to carry out his plan (unless he finds a loophole) 2) Roshar will be destroyed by the end of Stormlight Archive. (or shortly after)

For comics: I prefer Marvel over DC... currently anyway, Marvel is more fun while DC gives me the impression of taking itself too seriously. For cartoons: DC by a long shot has created better cartoon shows than Marvel. Batman: The Animated Season, Justice League, Young Justice, *cough*Teen Titans Go!*cough*, all these are fantastic shows. The best Marvel came up with were the 90s X-Men and Spider-man, and those were pretty inconsistent and ridiculous. For Live-action TV shows: DC has been in the business longer and has learned from its mistakes. Marvel has Agents of Shield (kinda a commercial for the movies) and the old Incredible Hulk. This goes to DC as well. Movies: The recent Marvel movies have blown DC out of the water, but that's mostly because I find them funner. WB seems more concerned with making the next "Dark Knight" and not just make a good comic-book movie.

Good points, though I'm not sure if you need to be "Returned" to get a Divine Breath (though I could be missing some WoB on that, in which case...*cough*) But as you said, the Fifth Heightening would not explain all of Hoid's durability... and it could be that whatever makes him really hard to kill also makes him aesthetically immortal.

So I'm under the impression that you know about music, so... I've always wandered about time signatures, particularly in works when they change (such as in jazz)... I've got some friends that claim they can tell when the time signature changes while listening, is there a method to recognizing time signature changes while listening to the work in question?
-
He could also have "one Divine Breath", which would make him have at least Fifth Heightening. Some such ability might also explain away his age, as the Fifth Heightening would make him "functionally immortal".

So I'm thinking there should be a comics story that involves both the Man-Thing and the High Evolutionary.... and no, the Evolutionary War does not count! They did not meet each other, that was just Spider-man, the Cleansers, and Man-Thing! The issue (ha) with such a story is that the Man-Thing and the High Evolutionary would most likely ignore each other... at most, the High Evolutionary would consider the Man-Thing a mere scientific curiosity and as a result, the Man-Thing would not be interested in the High Evolutionary due to his (the HE) apathy. So, the question is an obvious two-parter: How do we get around this problem? And how do we get Moon Knight involved?

I think people assume the downvote is done intentionally. I haven't really gone to the mobile site, but if I were to scroll up and down with my finger on the touchscreen, what are the chances of accidentally downvoting a post? And since I'm scrolling mindlessly, I might not even notice to try to get it corrected.
