Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Orlion Blight replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
I'll piggyback on this subject. I'm usually good with cardio or weights and what not except for in the morning. I can not workout/train in the morning without feeling sick or like my body is devouring itself to spite me. This, of course, is unfortunate because mornings are pretty much the only time I have to do such activities. -
Egads! I believe you are right! How embarrassing... Pfft, mere Excuses

"What is cowardice in the young is wisdom in the old, but all the same one can be ashamed of wisdom." -Graham Greene

It's fine, but I wouldn't plan a trip around it. It'd be more of a "well, I'm all ready here, I guess it's also time for a bathroom break... might as well".

Hey, even Orson Scott Card praises Sanderson. I've never heard Brandon praise Card. Which makes since, because OSC is garbage Seriously there's this one short story with the worst characterizations ever...Eumenidies in the Bathroom, or something like that... and the novel Wyrms! Talk about strange! And if you really want to yank your friend's chain... possibly to the point of ending the friendship... there's a theory out there that Ender's Game is just a fictionalized account of Hitler where Hitler's genocidal actions are justified. Sanderson has Nightblood. Set. Game. Match.

On cyclopean pages! I would say a lot of Lovecraft is...just awful... he struggled to write and he knew it, the readers knew it, and soon you'll know it. Of course, what's actually interesting are the ideas, which boils down to: the Universe does not care about you. Uplifting stuff. So when August Derelith decided to put his spin on the Mythos... ugh, I know I just said Lovecraft was awful, but Derelith took it to a whole other level. Think of his stuff as fan-fiction... or just don't read it. Really, August's part in this whole thing (the important one, anyway) was keeping Lovecraft stories published until they somehow became a cultural force of their own. I have not read any of the other older Mythos stuff, though I would like to read Howard and I have a book by another author whose name escapes me at the moment... charles? Charley? You may also want to check out some Ambrose Bierce ghost stories, since a few of those inspired Lovecraft (and, though they aren't Mythos, they are borrowed from). I'll have to check out the Tor re-read, this could be fun! Awful, awful fun!

Particularly in light of the last bolded sentence in that paragraph.

What if you are happily and completely off topic? For example: Dad: Blah Blah blah, boring inane stuff about kids these days and the fashion sense of whores... You: Oh, but that shouldn't be a problem, for you see: *sings*There are noooo cats in A-mer-i-ca, and the streets are paved with chee-eese! Yes, there are noooo cats in A-mer-i-ca, so put your mind at ease! Dad: (silent for a moment, until) How dare you! Your mother and I give you so much for the express purpose that you become our hostage in gossipy and stupid conversations, and this is how you repay me? That movie is mostly sad! Really sad! And now I got "Somewhere out there" stuck in my head and I can't see the road because the tears are blurring by vision- *cut to end scene of Thelma and Louise.* On second thought, you seem to be handling things very well on your own, maybe you don't need my advice -
I'm afraid I disagree. I allow that some share Christianity because they think they are doing good, but a whole lot do it because it is a commandment. And still, there's that other motivator: the preacher is right and you better recognize, son! Atheists will also proselytize because they see damage being done and want to save people they care about from the damage they've experienced from their experience with religion. Of course, there's that other motivator: the rational, logical atheist is right and you better recognize, son! You are probably starting to notice a pattern here.

The Hanging Tree? Sounds like the sequel to The Giving Tree as written by Frank Miller

I too would like to know them. But I must be difficult in my dealings with fellow humans, so I must insist they are posted in this topic

Yeah, we all look like trash!

Odium lay panting on the ground, his life force slowly draining from his being. How could this be? How could his perfect plan have failed? He was the very Anger of God, this should not be happening to him! "Who...are you?" he croaked. "I am...a Stick!" Then Odium explodes or something, I don't know... I don't want to spoil too much!

That's the thing, though: "With great power comes great responsibility". The Joker should have been killed a loooong time ago, it was Batman's responsibility, but he shirked it. He kept him alive so "the Joker wouldn't win" or "I'm not going to sink to his level" or "If I start killing, it'll be like Lay's potato chips and I won't stop at one!" Responsibility is hard, but that does not mean you are not responsible for the deaths that follow when you repeatedly let the unrepentant, slippery psychopath that always escapes and always kills more people live. Discussion cap off, I liked the scene in Kingdom Come where Magog is devastated at the destruction he could not prevent.

I believe you deal with powers you do not understand or command, Joe... all these swarms of nanobots released into the world can not be good! I mean, did you ever read Michael Crichton's Prey? -
Correct, and the distinction between atheist and agnostic is starting to get blurred nowadays, there are plenty of atheists who seem to believe that agnostics are the same as atheists. I was pretty much raised on the following definition: Almost an existentialist... except that existentialists have used their philosophy to argue for the existence/belief in God, so not quite. Of course, the issue gets confused because these debates are usually not about a general Deistic God, but rather a specific God (in the US, the Christian God). So the question can be better formulated: is someone who "knows" that there is no Christian God but is indifferent to the existence of a Deistic God an atheist or an agnostic?

Tell that to David Bowie! Of course, that is a mere one exception to the rule. It's pretty sad when you can tell the villain of a film based on how effeminate he is.

This reminds me of a Thomas Hardy quote: I feel a lot of confusion is in the language: there really is no "accepted" terminology to talk about gender identity. As a result, when one says something like, "I was assigned *blank* gender at birth" you will get kick-back in the vain of "This isn't Gattaca, no one chooses any gender at birth". Over time, this issue should rectify itself as expressions better suited to explaining these issues win out and the more confusing expressions are relegated to the dust-bin of linguistic insufficiency.
