Wanna help me with a school project?
Orlion Blight replied to BreezeCauthon's topic in General Discussion
I'll think about it. Do you have a due date? What's the age group of the class? -
Anakin constantly loses several Republic cruisers in season one and there's one episode where Ahsoka was leading squadron that was nearly whipped out which allowed her to learn about leadership.

Finished Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule. It was a fun, exciting read! Though I still am not sure how I feel about competent Jedi in my Star Wars...

Now I'm watching Clone Wars (the series). I rescind my critique of the Last Jedi involving Poe's actions resulting in the sizable loss of the Resistance fleet. Seems like "get a bunch of your allies killed so you can learn a lesson" is a proud Star Wars storytelling tradition.

We'll see how it goes. So long as it doesn't turn into "Remember old television programs" the show, it should be fine.

Controversial Opinions
Orlion Blight replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Someone is getting ratioed on Twitter for their take on fanfic and it reminded me of this topic! So, today's controversial opinion: Malazan has done more harm then good for the fantasy genre. This is because it gives aspiring writers the asinine idea that people outside their play groups would be interested and entertained by their RP sessions -
How many distractions do you have @Khaz? I could recommend a bunch, but some require more concentration than others (at least for me, ymmv). In any case, Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger is fantastic and everyone should check it out.

Who is the Shard's biggest Lord of the Rings nerd?
Orlion Blight replied to Tesh's topic in Entertainment Discussion
@Iarwainiel like @Channelknight Fadran said, I ran out of user name changes... and it looks like I'm stuck with this until a month from now! So, in the interest of expediency, my username is Orlion plus something to do with my avatar. So in the current case, it would be Orlionra -

@Iarwainiel That reminds me, my forum name (the actual one, not this current one) is a misspelling of Gandalf's Quenya name. My profile picture is Catra -

People aren't fans of Harry Potter, they're fans of the fandom. -
Who is the Shard's biggest Lord of the Rings nerd?
Orlion Blight replied to Tesh's topic in Entertainment Discussion
This is very useful for establishing a claim on the title of the Shard's Biggest Lord of the Rings Nerd. Congratulations, you have my sword. -
Who is the Shard's biggest Lord of the Rings nerd?
Orlion Blight replied to Tesh's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I forgot: To be a true Lord of the Rings nerd, you need to have a terrible take on Tom Bombadil because you refuse to accept that Tolkien created a character that affects the plot without any back story or mythology on purpose. The take has to be so bad, that it doesn't make sense when given the slightest contextual reference. For example: Tom Bombadil is Iluvatar! -
star wars Because Star Wars
Orlion Blight replied to I Am A Fish's topic in Entertainment Discussion
It's High Republic, so no Old Republic stuffs. Takes place hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga, so only Yoda will be a recognizable character. Apparently, the first antagonists will be Vikings....in....SPAAAAAAACE! The announced Disney+ show, The Acolyte, will take place in this time period.- 81 replies

Years ago, I had to monitor some servers overnight for a few hours. I decided to turn on the TV and there was a Phineas and Ferb marathon going on. Hearing "Curse you, Perry the Platypus!" frequently kept me sane and helped me keep track of time!

Unpopular Brandon Sanderson Opinions
Orlion Blight replied to not an Evil Librarian's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I mean... have you read other modern fantasy? Brandon is quite tame in comparison! Though to address your point, my main concern is that he will not do the topics justice (i.e. the religion/atheist deal.) -

Unpopular Brandon Sanderson Opinions
Orlion Blight replied to not an Evil Librarian's topic in General Brandon Discussion
1. That's interesting and understandable. 2. I agree 3. Not sure what you mean by this, do you mean least enjoyable for the reader or most tragic? 4. I was fine with Lift, she didn't overstay her welcome for me. 5. What classifies something as YA is weird. Like any genre, it is a marketing tool. As such, Brandon probably wanted to market it to adults because one: young adults read non-YA fantasy anyway, he's not missing out on a market there and two: he would lose a considerable chunk of market if it were marketed as YA because yes, many readers assume YA means something akin to "books for babies". -
Who is the Shard's biggest Lord of the Rings nerd?
Orlion Blight replied to Tesh's topic in Entertainment Discussion
If you can't speak and write different forms of Elvish, you're just a fan and can't be the Greatest. Also, you have to have shed blood to defend your answer to the following question: Do Balrogs have wings? Though honestly, most run of the mill fans have all ready done so -
Illustrative example, since I think we agree on basic principles and only disagree on some applications: Take the reaction to the movie The Last Jedi: What was acceptable (to me): - voicing frustration and dissatisfaction - analyzing "what went wrong" - compiling "fixes" and other such "here is how I would have made it better. - All the above done on forums and YouTube and the like. What was NOT acceptable (to me): - Direct harassment of actors, directors, writers, etc. I've only included what could be considered relevant to "artist-consumer interactions" so I have not included fan to fan interactions.

Well, I have strong speculative evidence that he has all ready lied about why he wrote the Magic novella instead of the Lost Metal. This makes a strong case that he didn't want to write the Lost Metal until around this timeframe Now, the reason he did this is one I can accept, which is why I have not gone into further specifics. I'll seek confirmation once I'm not interfering with what I perceive his intentions are. That is to say, none of us quite know as much about his process and intentions as we think. The above is illustrative because I was LIVID that he wrote the Magic novella instead of the Last Metal, a reaction that is reasonable based on what he (I now believe deceptively) said was the reason. Now amount of "just appreciate"-isms would change that. No one here is actually harassing Brandon in real life (which is what Gaiman was responding to). Like I said, like authors are allowed to set their own pace and choose their own projects, readers are allowed to grouse in the proper forums. And no one should challenge that with Gaiman's article that addresses a situation that isn't occurring in this topic or this forum.

Only if you think the readers' feelings don't matter. Readers are allowed to be disappointed and frustrated. They're allowed to voice that disappointment and frustration in the proper forums. To say that's wrong or improper is, frankly, akin to gaslighting. The "not entitled" state goes both ways. The readers may not be entitled to the next book in a series, but the author is also not entitled to the readers' energetic support of any project or creative direction they embark on.

What would happen if KoW was terrible?
Orlion Blight replied to Bearer of all agonies's topic in General Brandon Discussion
You'll have people disappointed with it for hashtag-reasons and they'll be vocal about it and waaaay overdramatic about it. That's just the nature of longform fiction and its fandom. For me, the issue is if the book can be salvageable later. I was disappointed with Oathbringer for hashtag- reasons and was vocal and waaaay overdramatic about it, but after reading Rythm of War, I have a much more favorable view of it. Of course, my main concern is The Lost Metal. If that ends up being disappointing, I might have to start riots! -
@Scout_Fox Not necessarily. It just means that you have to frame the story properly. For Star Wars, an example would be Ahsoka. One would wonder back in the day why one should care about her character, after all she can't affect the events of Episode 3 and subsequent films and there was the whole Order 66 issue. Yet, a lot of people ended up caring, and continue to do so. This is due in part with how they handled her story and fallout of Order 66 (we ended up having years getting used to the idea that 1. Some Jedis did survive Order 66 and 2. She survived it) but also because the focus was on her. Her story happened to take place during the main movies, but her story wasn't ABOUT the main movies. Thus, you can have, say, a very satisfying duel between Ahsoka and Darth Vader even though we know Ahsoka can not end up defeating or turning Darth Vader to the Lightside. Which also shows that spoilers aren't that big a deal, but that's another discussion
