Funniest Scenes in Stormlight Archive (so far)
natc replied to Tetriona's topic in Stormlight Archive
I do feel Shallan went too far there though. His parents really do have nothing to do with this, and we all know how much he cared about them. Everything before that was funny though. -
I can't really confirm or deny what BS was thinking, but Aona almost certainly had nothing to do with how it happened.
-
They probably were paragons of their ideals initially, to be honest. But after centuries to millennia of war and torture, you can't really blame them for giving up.
-
But . . . it can't be. Aona doesn't speak English either, so she wouldn't actually call him "Dominion", but the Yolish or Selish word for the concept. There is no reason to believe the Aon is in any way related to the shard's name, as we don't even know what the name is in any of the languages used.
-
Domi is definitely closer to Devotion (most of the doctrine, plus Aon Omi being love as stated) though is likely both because the other splinter religion derived from the same source has the whole domination and conquest thing going on. Remember, they aren't speaking English.
-
That's just the fact that memories in general aren't as sharp in your head as time passes. People forget things. Nothing magical. I'm not sure investiture can just recreate information that doesn't exist that easily.

Can I read Emperor's Soul before Elantris
natc replied to Herald's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
It doesn't really matter in the end, being isolated events in different regions. No overlap of magic either. Go ahead. -
The odd thing is that it doesn't really check out as an explanation for the circles without some sort of circular feedback situation going on, because Elantris and the gate cities were themselves seemingly built as a massive Aon Rao intentionally, since adding the chasm line restored its original Shaod functions and aons in general seemed stronger with it fixed. So if that's what the circles represent, then it's an aon based on a structure that was based on that aon. That's just weird.

Are there more Orders than those in ages past?
natc replied to Landis963's topic in Stormlight Archive
Plus, Renarin saw them all die, and they didn't, so the accuracy of Truthwatcher prophecies are about suspect enough to match Honor's incompetence in the area. Ruin also does not seem that good at predicting since he was out-gambitted so badly, but his god metal when applied in allomancy creates perfectly accurate future predictions for two seconds. When under duralumin flare even longer, and seemingly still accurate. I would suppose the magical effects of a shard's investiture applied to a magic system don't necessarily reflect the shard's powers in application. On the Orders thing, 10 is too ingrained in Roshar (both nature and religion) to not make the most sense. There's no reason to believe there are other combinations . . . yet. -
I do believe they do use more, but not sure. Reverse being the cheapest. It's really just a name the first windrunners probably came up with for convenience. It doesn't have to be accurate. Can't say much for Szeth, but I don't think Kaladin really understands enough physics to determine how his surges truly function. And people from the Heraldic Epochs evidently were just primitive people who can't even forge steel and had to be taught to cast bronze. "Gravity" and "air pressure" probably don't factor into this naming scheme.
-
Plus, the Unclaimed Hills basically walled in the entire Shattered Plains, right? Further out being the Frostlands. If there were no mountains blocking the other three sides that the Alethi warcamps didn't occupy, sieging the Parshendi would be impossible. They would simply leave.

As has been brought up, he seems to have a bit too impersonal of a reaction to Odium's deeds if he was a target himself, especially if he's actively hiding.
-
. . . you literally claimed that the KR were not created by the heralds and then proceeded to explain that the heralds founded and organized the KR, completely contradicting yourself and supporting that last bit of what he said. "Knight Radiant" is a title associated with a man-made organization. The only thing the Heralds had no hand in the creation of in this conversation is surgebinders. Sophiina appears to be talking about the Orders, not the people specifically. As for the Heralds, I do believe back then they at least were embodiments of those . . . attributes of some kind, whether a term exists escapes me. It's a Vorinism thing. Like leading/protecting for Jezrien and creativity/honesty for Shalash. They seem to align with the more detailed oaths.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
natc replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Why would you be able to use his senses before this O_O -
And technically, the shards did not create them. The metallic arts are "of" them to some extent, shaped by their intents, and they have some influence over the way the magic functions, but IIRC the metallic arts as we know them exist as a realmatic byproduct of their presence on Scadrial than anything intentional.
-
Does the bind point have to be valid at all to allow mental influence by Ruin though? It's a good question to ask.
-
It's a pain, because how long would you have to store at as fast a rate as you'd dare to be able to accelerate bodily regeneration to a degree that can regrow lost members? Resealing wounds is one thing, but you're talking about creating massive amounts of biomass from nothing. I don't believe we actually have a known confirmed case of a metalmind reaching full capacity. Sazed had multiple copper bracers, but that might just be for purposes of organizing the contents for all we know, plus they hold centuries worth of research, and the memories are put back in relatively quickly, not getting used up like health. Wayne probably gets maybe a week or two sick in bed tops if he's lucky enough to not have work to do with Wax. Weakening yourself too much while on the move is too risky except in emergencies where you absolutely expect a need to heal wounds relatively soon.

If you managed to calculate the exact direction and distance to another planet from the position you are standing at, factoring the rotation of Sel (the planet Elantris is on), its revolution around its sun, the whole solar system's movement relative to the destination, etc. And you gotta realize you're talking about distances in lightyears, so where you observe the planet to be is not where the planet is; you need to "predict" its current position based on what you know as well. Factor in the time it would take you to actually do all this maths then draw the aon. Once you miraculously pull it off, you can presumably arrive at the planet you want to reach. But of course you can't come back anymore since you're too far from Arelon. And that's assuming there's actually enough power from the Dor on top of Elantris' giant Aon Rao's boost to send you that far, I suppose.

Come on, it's a bit too short for a reaction, but was downvoting it really necessary? I was going to type more but something came up

I believe there's a WoB somewhere about what happens if you melt a spike down and forge it into several pieces? IIRC the charge is evenly distributed.
-
There's no "maybe". They're inquisitor spikes. That have been split to multiple spikes just to make them earing-sized, most likely, on top of being left out of a living body for a considerable amount of tI'd expect. The power probably barely matters.
-
It's literally called the Surge of Destruction and Decay though, isn't it?Besides, Adhesion as a surge functions by manipulating atmospheric pressure to cause things to get stuck instead of anything to do with adhesive properties, and Illumination can both produce sound and total darkness.
-
. . . wait, what?

Earth is not cosmere. Shinovar has an almost entirely Earth-like ecosystem, as does Scadrial after the Final Ascension (to be honest they had deer and dogs even during the World of Ash, didn't they? And boars, I think). Presumably Scadrial is modeled after Yolen's life (in appearance if not genetics), as the Shattering apparently occurred at Yolen, and all 16 people who ascended then were presumably from there. Hoid is from there as well. If anything, outside of invested species like kandra or whatever they have in those minor shardworlds, a lot of cosmere animals are vaguely earthlike. Roshar is kind of an outlier, being dominated by crustaceans and devoid of soil (except Shinovar, which is 100% normal). Last note, remember that the characters aren't speaking English. What they say is presented to us as english, but it may not be entirely accurate, just similar. A hypothetical scadrian bunny might differ from Yolish or earth bunnies if dissected and analyzed. Human biology in the cosmere is different enough between planets.
-
I know little of Yolen, but from what I know it is not just nothing but stone all over. Far from it.
