Kaladin's shield for example...for even the bridge in the early part of his powers manifesting. He gives the bridge (and later his shield) it's own gravitational pull that makes arrows come towards it instead of him. FROM COPPERMIND Reverse Lashing By using the Reverse Lashing, a Surgebinder can increase the gravitational pull of an object, allowing them to subtly pull nearby objects toward it. The Surgebinder must maintain contact with the object to Reverse Lash it.

for starters...you can lash things toward other things and not just in directions...it happens a few times in the books... but anyway... Are all non-pewter burning allomancers constantly drunk from drinking alcohol solution every time they need more metal? Is cirrhosis the leading cause of death for copperclouds? Should awakeners always carry vials of concentrated dye in case they find themselves with breath but without color? You know...they can just splash it around and stain a bunch of stuff purple... Organic matter that is close in shape to a person is the easiest thing to awaken...so...can I use a frosting bag to make a little man made of poo, set it on fire and have it knock on someone's door and wait?

So...ever since finding out that Hemalurgy is possible for different magic systems...I've REALLY been wondering what other compounding like hacks might become possible when mixing magic systems. By the way...possible spoilers ahead...please avert any cosmerically uneducated eyes... I mean...before we learned about compounding...there really wasn't any reason to think that burning a metal you had stored in would do anything different...but it does...in a big way. In the ars arcanum of shadows of self, the author mentions that being a twin born doesn't just give the person 1 power from each tree, it also generates a 3rd power of sorts. This makes me wonder what other sorts of crazy cross overs might happen. IE, if you are a bloodmaker who gets spiked to become an awakener...can you use breaths as superfuel to fill your goldminds at an incredible rate? If you're an awakener who gets spiked to become a pewter arm, can you constantly flare your metal and become a savant without ever suffering any negative side effects? I'm very curious...

This is what I would refer to as empty criticism. It's when you harshly point out what you percieve it's flaws without addressing the issue of how these flaws could be fixed. He pokes fun and sanderson using names that are difficult to pronounce in our language in order to make the world seem for fantastic and foreign...and stops there. Is he suggesting that Kaladin Stormblessed should be named Phil the really lucky? He scoffs at Sanderson focusing the story's setting on the shattered plains with only brief glimpses at the rest of the world...and stops there. And yet...if we visited characters from all different parts of the world more frequently and used them to develop the plot in many different areas...he would probably criticise the plot as being vague and unfocues. Some people just like to (edit: complain...I wanted to use a different word that starts with B and ends in tch), and try to pass it off as constructive criticism.

Yeah...I started reading Song of Ice and Fire a LONG time ago...I think I found the first book in a "here take these paper back books" box that was in the english building at school back in like 2004...I proceeded to read each of the others until I ran out of books...then waited patiently for Dance with Dragons...at this point I'm totally fed up with waiting...and quite frankly...don't even remember what is going on in the series right now...I think I might refrain from reading the next books just out of spite.

AMEN...and upvote Besides, you can learn all kinds of things from fiction. Even the most far removed unrealistic fantasy can expand your vocabulary, refine your knowledge of writing techniques, make you ponder questions of ethics and morality in situations that you've never been in before, and in general, tends to make you a more empathetic person in real life. Granted...reading a long essay on wave particles is a better way to learn the material then picking up a scifi book that talks about the subject...but the two books are obviously FOR different purposes. It's like a conversation that goes: "So, last night I had sex with this girl Lisa, and MAN was it ever amazing! You should have sex with her." "I don't like to have sex with women. I usually just go running with them. It's such a better way to get physical exercise." "Well...I mean...Running is definitely better for physical fitness...but...you're kind of missing the point."
-
The thing that I get really tired of hearing when talking to other people about books is..."I don't really like to read fiction. I prefer to read books that I can learn something from. Like history or self help." As though reading a fiction (god forbid FANTASY) book is the equivalent of staring at a blank wall for hours. Anyone who says this suffers from a severe lack of imagination and is...deep down...a masochist who feels that nothing fun can be good for you...

I find that switching genres is the best way to "cleanse you palette". For anyone looking for something to read until Bands of Mourning comes out...I just finished the Nexus trilogy by Ramez Naam...it was pretty good...action packed cyber punk scifi...if you really want to get into something totally different than Sanderson try Haruki Marukami. "So...I just finished reading "Wind up Bird Chronicle". - "Really? How was it?" - "Really good. Marukami is a great writer." - "So...what's the story about?" - "I have absolutely no idea! But it was amazing!"

another thread about black investiture
hoidhunter replied to hoidhunter's topic in Stormlight Archive
Moogle, natc, and Yata...always good to have some of the veterans on the thread...upvotes... I feel like the Unmade are one of those things that we have most of the pieces of the puzzle and Brandon is going to drop one more on us in book 3 (hopefully) it's just driving me mad in the mean time. Now...another random musing on the topic...the giant crazy water spren that we see in one of the interludes...it mimics the faces of everyone who has died recently...and the people who come to observe it are left feeling drained...any possible affiliation?- 17 replies

another thread about black investiture
hoidhunter replied to hoidhunter's topic in Stormlight Archive
Or to hang out in highstorms (see striding the storm)...but anyway... I just thought that the language was oddly specific..."spark of death itself"...as opposed to the spark of life.- 17 replies

another thread about black investiture
hoidhunter replied to hoidhunter's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well...upvotes for supporting the thread early on. And you know...Battar...I never made the connection with the Listener reverence for the dead...could be something there...hhhhhmmmmm... Random musings on topic...death spren are black with glowing red eyes...and on scadrial Hemalurgy is, in essence, taking a piece of a dead person's soul and shoving it into someone else (read this on a different thread...not my original idea) keep it coming...- 17 replies

I almost feel silly starting a thread for one small observation...but what the heck...it's a free internet isn't it? While poking around pondering the nature of the unmade, corrupted investiture, nightblood, etc, something from one of the lines from the diagram stood out to me... "Powered by the spark of death itself" is the thing that really caught my attention. I've spend hours pouring over quotes and other info trying to puzzle out what the deal is with the unmade, but this is the first time that this particular line ever caught my interest. Could this have some correspondence with all the discussion about Black or Corrupted stormlight (investiture). What I mean is...sapient life is possible because ALL sapient life is in some small way invested...so...could the unmade be fueled by the negation or corruption of that life...death (specifically the death of an intelligent being) or even just the pain and suffering of one. to broaden the topic of conversation a bit...could this have something to do with how Odium goes about splintering a shard? We know that it's time consuming, we know that it's very taxing for him. Could it be that Odium has used Unmade like splinters to do his dirty work on other worlds before? The name Svrakiss springs to mind...The Svrakiss were the souls of men barred from entrance into heaven for hating Jaddeth in life,[1] and so were condemned to wander Sel, bitterly cursing their fate and preying on the living.[2] The Derethi believed that they had the ability to take of the bodies of living men and control their actions.[1] When someone who followed Shu-Dereth had bad luck or a difficult time, they believed that the Svrakiss were to blame.[3][4] The Svrakiss were considered to be a representation of absolute evil. Re-Shephir, the Midnight Mother, giving birth to abominations with her essence so dark, so terrible, so consuming. She is here! She watches me die! Let me no longer hurt! Let me no longer weep! Dai-gonarthis! The Black Fisher holds my sorrow and consumes it! Though all of them have some relevance to precognition, Moelach is one of the most powerful in this regard. His touch seeps into a soul as it breaks apart from the body, creating manifestations powered by the spark of death itself. Well...have at it 17th shard...I know there are holes (feel free to point them out) but don't be afraid to run with the idea a little either!

Here's something you don't say everyday..."I agree with the killer squirrel"...it just doesn't seem to fit the story for him to have been an agent of 17th shard at such an early point in the story...now...I don't know if this has any bearing what so ever (in fact probably not)...but he was a Seer right?

Possible world-hopper/Hoid sighting
hoidhunter replied to NewbSombrero's topic in Cosmere Discussion
sorry to go off topic but I didn't want to start my own thread just for this little thing...has anyone ever been able to confirm Felt as a worldhopper...my very first post on the forums was a wild theory that I had that just because the name Felt appears on two different worlds, that it must be a Hoid alias...at the time I didn't realize that there were many other worldhopping characters... So again...has anyone ever gotten any WoB talking about Felt? -
