I'm gonna bend the rules and give f-luck to both Spike and Jet from Cowboy Bebop...guys need to catch a break...(although...do you need luck in the first place in order to store it up...?)
-
Yes and no...you may be right about it not existing until after the shattering...but I believe that Hemalurgy is something that exists in some form for all shard worlds...even without Ruin's presence or influence...it's pan-cosmere influence is what makes me think that it's importance and possibly diabolical nature have simply not been revealed yet...but I've been wrong about things before.

I really like the first two books that are out so far...I do agree with some of the things that have been said about the plot being a little plodding and lacking in development with regards to the chandrian storyline...but it didn't really bother me all that much. The rest is so much fun to read that I found myself getting involved despite the lack of progression. My one gripe with the series is...how to say this...Denna...is an irritation of 3 parts...I'd list what parts those were...but the moderators might get upset... By the way...why is this in Stormlight Archive again???

Sandersons Agents of 17th Shard
hoidhunter replied to TwelfthOfSnackTime's topic in General Brandon Discussion
One of my favorite choices for a world hopper has aways been 6th of Dusk...I know the timeline doesn't work out particularly well...but hey...a man can dream... -
I know right...is it too much to ask of Brandon for him to just finish all comsere books (while still doing a really good job) inside for the next year?!? I'm getting impatient...

Bands Of Mourning - meaning of the title.
hoidhunter replied to Oversleep's topic in Cosmere Discussion
They are mentioned in part 2 of shadows of self...briefly. "Others contained depictions of the rebuilding of the world, or other relics such as a replica of both Harmony's Bands and the Bands of Mourning." -
this topic is always tricky...especially if you're read any of the unpublished stuff...I really want to reference something from LoP...but...can't...
-
Well...I should have said that...not only do we have a few in world references to his lack of violent potential...but all we ever see him do is meddle...despite the fact that he is obviously a powerhouse...

I would say that Hemalurgy is probably the most connected to the shattering of Adonalsium. We know that it is some way universal to use in conjunction with any magic system...and...that it works to diminish the presence of invested life forms. I haven't worked it out all the way...but I have a hunch that the creation and use of Hemalurgy is somehow tied to the shattering.

Bondsmiths as "divine" ambassadors
hoidhunter replied to Full Metal Rithmatist's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I've always looked at it as wanting to avoid painful memories. I think the reason that the Stormfather is a little unhinged is that without being bonded...his memories and overall conscious awareness of things is vague and limited (like syl at the beginning) and after becoming bonded to Dalinar...he's going to start recalling some seriously disturbing stuff that he would rather leave forgotten... a combination of "fool me once" and "ignorance is bliss" This is also supported by his desire to simply wipe everyone out with an untimely highstorm vs. watching tragic events play out once again... -
While I think it's likely that we will see a lot more overlap between worlds/characters as the stories progress...I'm not sure if Brandon would go for the galactic "Free for All" as a way to wrap things up...it just seems a little too obvious. On the other hand...the entire cosmere, so far, has been the story of how different "godlike characters" (shards) interact with each other...so...yes. This is the impression that I have always gotten as well. We never see Hoid get involved in any brawling...and I think that there is an excellent reason for that.

'Entering' Shadesmar? Aren't you already there...
hoidhunter replied to Turos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
quote: Shadesmar- you can WALK to the other planets. It's a pretty far ways away (at least days, if not more), but you can go to Shadesmar, walk in the directions where it says "The Expanse of the Vapors" and it runs into Scadrial . In Shadesmar all of that empty space doesn't really have any human interaction, so it doesn't really have an aspect in the cognitive realm, so all of that place gets shortened immensely. Whenever a planet has enough thinking life on it that's it’s considering it a planet, it drops into Shadesmar. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I wonder if/how the movement of planetary bodies influences travel between worlds via shadesmar. ie...if their physical orientation to your world correlates to the correct direction you would need to travel in order to get there. Or...for that matter...how you go about moving around in a vast 3 dimensional environment (space) using a largely 2 dimensional plane (shadesmar) for orientation... -

Upvotes to Bambam, WEZ and Titan... After seeing the "Terris Bridgeman" pointed out a while ago...I paid close attention on a reread of Stormlight Archive...and I'm in total agreement. Aside from his physical description...there is a scene where he talks with Shallan...and the mannerism seem spot on as well...

Yeah...Felt was the reason I first signed up on the shard. Just wondering if anyone had anything else to add. He's a pet fascination of mine. How about this...safe to assume that he's a world hopper?

One of my personal theories is that Hemalurgy is somehow related to the real cosmere bad guys. It is pervasive across all systems of magic and generally seems to destroy investiture. Just a hunch...

So...I'm just wondering...has anyone been able to get any insight or information from Brandon or Peter about the character Felt? Or...does anyone have any interesting theories they would care to discuss regarding his identity? Here's all that I've got so far... What we know for sure: Felt is a spy from Urteau, Scadrial. He is described as lithe and short with a hawkish face and a drooping moustache.[1] He is one of the main spies for House Venture. He spies on Kelsier's crew's hideout and reports to Elend that they are a well-funded, competent skaa thieving crew.[1] Elend employs Felt again during the Siege of Luthadel to figure out how the city was being infiltrated. He interrogates the refugees entering the city and the people running the Luthadel passwalls before searching the river and determining that someone had pried the grates free to create their own entrance into the city. Before that, Felt had not had much work as a spy, and is enjoying the tasks he has been given during the siege.[2] During the Siege of Fadrex City, Felt is assigned to watch the Lord Ruler's storage cavern in the east. [3] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Felt is an Alethi scout on the Shattered Plains who reports to Lyn during the Battle of Narak. Felt and Shim are sent scouting the surrounding plains prior to the Battle of Narak.[1] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So...Coppermind lists these as being two separate characters...but I find it hard to believe that Brandon would have given two different characters the same name accidentally. While it is not specifically named as being Felt, one of the two scouts who return to the command tent gives Shallan the hint that she needs in order to find the oathgate. Supposing that Felt is in fact a worldhopper...I don't believe that he is tied in with 17th shard...for one...he's not with the other three we see at the purelake. #2, he is using the same name that he used on scadrail instead of trying to hide his identity. What do you all think?

Something that our origonal poster touched on...that I haven't seen elaborated on yet...is just how useful feruchemy can be for combat training. High altitude or restricted oxygen training is a great way to improve your cardiovascular health. Your body gets used to operating with less oxygen...so when you're in a more oxygen rich environment...everything seems much easier to do. You could theoretically use cadmuim in this capacity. By always storing a little bit of breath while, running, sparring, etc...your body would get use to functioning well with less oxygen. Then, when actually in combat, you would have a massive store of breath...which your body would use more effeciently due to being adapted to low oxygen. I don't know if this would work for iron or not...but assuming it would...you could constantly go around weighing a little more than you should. Your muscles would learn to function normally under the added strain. Then, when you needed to, not only could you stop tapping weight, but you could pull a wax, and store a little bit of weight. Your muscles would be used to moving normally under added strain, simply weighing what you normally should would feel amazingly easy. Again...I'm not sure if this would work or not...but...you could potentially use gold in a similar way. We see that when someone is storing health...their immune system is compromised and they are more likley to get sick. You could use this to contract sicknesses under controlled circumstances, stop storing health in order to make a speedy recovery, and presto...you've got some brand new antibodies. I'd be curious to see how this idea would apply to storing strength. After all, when storing strength, you're actually losing muscle mass. If you were to work out every day while storing strength...what would be the outcome? Another idea that I like, is just how well bendalloy, cadmium, gold, and tin would work in concert. With a perfect supply of oxygen, hydration, and nutrition, coupled with the ability to quickly heal muscle fatigue, and the ability to ignore the physical discomfort of muscle fatigue by storing tactile sense, would create a soldier who can go through ridiculous amount of stress without ever feeling tired.

Hey...welcome to the forum! While cosmere is awesome...don't ignore Sanderson's other works...if nothing else it's a way to pass the time until the next addition to the cosmere come's out. Have fun! and have an upvote for being new!

Don't feel bad...suddenly realizing that the cosmere exists is probably the primary reason most people join the forum. ME "Man...Sanderson is a really fun author to read...but some of these books seem a little formulaic...and why does this same name keep popping up? (google search)...holy crap this is amazing!...(joins 17th shard)" Welcome to the forum...have an upvote for being new! by the way...I like the name...if I ever own a boat it's going to be called "The Unsuspicious Fishing Boat"

You exist? That's so weird...me too!!! (in theory anyway...with the internet you can never really be sure...) anyway...welcome to the shard! Have fun...also...you will find a large number of ridiculously informed fans on the forum who may very well be answer your questions if it's something that has been addressed in the past...(I find it's easier and more engaging that looking through old Q&A posts) And if an answer doesn't exist already...make a post about it...and we'll all have fun running through the possibilities! Have an upvote for being new!

Hey there. Welcome to the shard. This is also the 1st and only online fan forum I have ever belonged to...and it's a lot of fun. Look forward seeing you around. Have an upvote for being new!
