And there are many waves of humanity as well. Shinovar appears to be the first reservation, but the Ire (whose people know they are refugees) is likely another reservation of a different heritage of humans (they are placed north-east of Shinovar in an isolated nook). Then we have the Theylans, which might also be another reservation population that was placed in the southern nook and away from the brutality of the high storms as well. Or are the Theylans more related to Voidbringers, as they still worship Odium's passions? After that we have the Amians which appear to inhabit a weird island even more isolated from the rest, and appear to be an entirely new race (two races) that was/were created after a god interceded with one of the sentient populations. We can't even say if the Alethi are related to the Shin, or if the Shin are yet another breed of human that now inhabits the old void-reservation. I have no idea if 10,000 years is enough time for such a radical change in phenotype from east to west human populations to be apparent, though desolations/cultivation could have enhanced the phenotypical distinctiveness between the two groups.

Hello Brandon, Love the sample chapters that have been posted. One thing I wanted to ask -- is Tien in someway connected to what the dawn-singers were? Or am I insane for getting that feeling? Brandon: You're not insane, but you're not quite right either. The book (Oathbringer) will actually make some great strides in explaining this--so you won't have to wait long. ----- So, uh - did we learn anything? Tien isn't a Dawnsinger, right? Those were the Parshendi? Right? So - like, what? The shin think stone is magic, and Then gives shiny stones - so? uh? Guys?

Hold put his breath in a doll before bonding the Spren, didn't he?

I believe if Adolin had taken the shard, he would be have been called Passion, but because Rayse was such a hateful person, the shard ended up learning towards Odium instead of something more neutral. Another name for his shard would likely be Excess. Another curiosity is that the other shards think Odium likely a force or beast at this point, and not really a human sentience at all, yet that doesn't match up with what we have seen. Odium still has a human aspect, and even if that aspect is a facade, there is still a sentience in there as far as we can tell. Are the other Shards correct in naming him Odium, if they are wrong about his mental state?

[OB] Aluminum Economics and Roshar
teknopathetic replied to LordMistbornII's topic in Stormlight Archive
Maybe wearing an aluminum necklace with an aluminum chain acts like aluminum helmets blocking emotional allomancy? We know that you don't need to cover the entire body to produce an effect. Aluminum has the ability to block investiture/meddling without covering the entire body-mass. With Shallan and Pattern, the Skybreakers were able to tell a proto-radiant was around, but they couldn't figure out who. They guessed Heleran and were likely wrong. I agree that a bit of aluminum shouldn't be enough to hide someone entirely, but Shallan's aluminum is a Chekov's Gun, and its the best explanation we have for why the Skybreakers were so confused, and why other truth-augers seemed to have not noticed her until she killed her parents and left the necklace behind in search of Jasnah. Another thing I noticed was that Shallan may have snuck up on Hold when they first met at the menagerie. She was wearing her mother's necklace, and Hold was startled to see her. One idea is that he was started by her investiture, but another option is that his life-sense did not detect her invested-approach, and he was confused to see so much investiture with his eyes, when his breath (or whatever) had not felt it. We thought Hoid had never seen a radiant before, but now we know there were Skybreakers everywhere, and there had been 20+ years of radiants emerging and being murdered. Likely Hoid new of this already.- 39 replies

[OB] Speculations on the title of book four.
teknopathetic replied to Turnblade Jade's topic in Stormlight Archive
Do we believe that Eshonai will have a book of her own, or was that a bluff so people wouldn't guess about Venli? Venli was the biggest and most rewarding surprise of the book for me, and a book devoted to her would be worthwhile in my opinion. I mean, she is basically a walking book preaching about the history of her people. Her story is the most likely one to be recorded in-world, and what she chooses to say is massively important for the new religion that is forming with the Singers. If Venli had bonded a Listener Spren, then I would believe Eshonai is returning, but Venli seems to be the character to care about now. And Venli booting her Radiant Spren for her sister spren would be upsetting. Odium believes Eshonai to be a weakness, so he likely won't allow her into a Parshman, though I suppose this could happen. I am way more in vested in Venli now, though a POV of Eshonai on Braize would be interesting as hell (get it?) -
Odium's Blindspot - His Own Futuresight We know from a WOB that each shard has a blindness, like metal for certain shards in a certain book. Some believe this to be the Shard's focus, but we dint have 100% proof that all shards act this way. When Mr.T meets with Odium, Odium is unable to see Renarin in the weavings of The Diagram. Mr.T notices this and is confused. All the words of the diagram are known to Odium, minus this one aspect. Renarin Broke Odium's Plan Renarin saw his own death through Odium's power. In Odium's sight, Jasnah Kills Renarin, and likely Odium tells Dalinar about the death of his son at Jasnah's hands. Then Dalinar goes super crazy and becomes the child of Odium once more (or something like that). But, Odium can't see Renarin's fate cleary. Renarin is a blindspot, and Renarin manages to do something different than what Odium saw. Renarin helps save the day, and the city is saved in part due to his actions. Odium was genuinely horrified that Dalinar did not become corrupted. Sure, Cultivation had her vines in Dalinar, but there is more to it than that. Cultivation didn't seem very hopeful that she would save Dalinar, and it seems likely that Odium would be able to sense Cultivation's influence. Odium was sure that Dalinar was going to break. Was Renarin the missing piece? Perhaps the prohibition on foresight has two derivations: 1) People know that seeing the future is usually of Odium, and doing so means you are being polluted by him in some way. Also, knowing the future can lead one to fatalism, much as Renarin gave up and just waited for his cousin to strike him down. There is likely more here. 2) A Vorin prohibition against ever using foresight in the first place would help Odium greatly. If humans were morally against using Odium's foresight, then Odium wouldn't need to worry about the reverb effect. Foresight is not a be-all end-all evil in the Cosmere, as Kaladin rightly notes after meeting with the Sel Augur. Odium was shocked by the Diagram and how it was being used. Mr.T had been utilizing death-rattles in order to prune his diagram, and this seems to work very well. Odium didn't have any "gotchas" or "good minion" to say to Mr.T. Odium seemed genuinely shocked at what Mr.T had produced, despite Mr.T harvesting death-rattles by the hundreds. Why Corrupt the Truthwatchers? The Stormlight Library shows us that the Truthwatchers were corrupted either during or before the time of the last desolation (4000 years ago). We see that the Truthwatchers refused to talk about their powers, became insular, and one gem says "I foresaw this". Obviously a corrupted order would be great for Odium, but it seems like things went to crem for Odium after this corruption happened. The Radiants won-ish, some unmade were captured, and life on Roshar went on. I can't decide if Odium wanted the Truthwachers corrupted like this for some reason, or if perhaps the Truthwatchers at one point decided the corruption might give them an edge. Odium never seems to use Renarin in his plans (Odium didn't know Shallan was a Lightweaver, Odium didn't use Renarin to destroy the Oathgate or open an Oathgate, Renarin knowing the date of the Everstorm only helped Dalinar, etc etc). What is the point of half-corrupting Truthwatchers? It seems like maybe it was self-inflicted? Or was the corruption intentionally botched by the traitor Unmade? Something is so off about Renarin and his Odiumsight. Renarin has been so useful, and Odium can't see Renarin's implication's clearly. Now Mr.T has joined Odium, but knows Renarin is some sort of weakness to be leveraged against the god of Passion. Renarin is, perhaps, walking Atium.

I would like to know if Dalinar could hear the rhythms after grabbing onto the arm of a full Singer/Listener. We have some evidence that many humans can almost hear the rhythms (either innately or because of crossbreeding with Parshenid, Herdaxians, and Horneaters)
-
This is a thought dump for trying to figure out if Roshar Humans (some of the breeds) ever actually reincarnated in the Tranquiline Halls. We learned so much about spren-incarnation in OB, and I am left wondering if the Tranquiline Halls was just an idea stolen from Singers, or if humans once actually were utilizing reincarnation. Full Spoilers for all Cosmere Below: Specifically Emperor's Soul, Wax and Wayne Arc, and Oathbringer Basically, I want to know which shard allows for reincarnation. Did Odium grant the power to the Singers once the Humans switched gods? Did cultivation give the power to the singers, and Odium corrupted it? Is reincarnation via spren or via soul a Comsere-wide possibility? Here are some thing live noticed. Ideas: 1. In the Wax and Wayne arc we learn that certain people working for Trell can "serve again in the next realm". So it is possible for humans to serve again in some manner, so the Tranquiline Halls could be that or something similar to that. Do humans serve as shadows, or is there a cognative realm battle going on, or do some talanted humans reincarnate in bodies using Spren-Magic, Breath Magic, Forging Magic, or Hemalurgic Magic? - did Shai reincarnate the emperor of the Rose Empire? Would something similar be effective in a war? Could we bring back someone that way? 2. Since at least the beginning of the Oathpact, the singers could be reborn in a parshman. Eventually, the Oathpact stops the Singers from immediately re-spawning, and for a long time they were forced to live on in Damnation, waiting for their next desolation. It is unclear if spren-incarnation is something that Singers could do naturally before any shards arrived, or if they were invested by Odium, Honour, and or Cultivation at some point and given the ability. - did the humans learn this idea from the Singers and place it in their religious ideals. 3. At least some heritages of human were minions of Odium in the past. Odium must have granted them magic in some form. Did Odium allow humans to reincarnate on Ashyn/Braize in order to be more destructive? Which powers did humans have when they fled Ashyn/Braize for Roshar? 4. At least Ten Humans were given the power to reincarnate after a death. Who is copying whom with this magic? Did Odium originally have reincarnating humans, then the humans switched to team honour, Odium then reincarnates Singers, and then Ten Heralds then gain the ability to reincarnate as well? Or did the Singers reincarnate first and then the Heralds made a deal to copy the same process? - It doesn't seem that humans need to steal someone else's body in order to reincarnate, so how do heralds do it? Is it fuelled by Odium, or another shard? 5. When the Stormvengers were in Shadesmaar, humans were dying near them, yet we never once saw a person pass between the Cognative realm onto the spiritual realm on Roshar. Sure, we didn't see anyone die next to a character, but you would think our heroes would have seen someone pass on. They did see candles go out, but no one noticed a spirit. Is this because Honour wasn't there to meet them, or is it because their spirits are going somewhere else? What do you think? Are the Tranquiline Halls real for the average Human?

The true Voidbringers? The Shin?
teknopathetic replied to Hoiditthroughthegrapevine's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think we need to remember that a culture isn't a monolith - a charismatic leader, and environmental pressure, or the introduction of new technology can leverage a culture to do almost anything in the right environment. We know nothing of their religion or what they think their role on this planet should be, so it is hard to judge. We also know that the Shin train at least some people with honour blades, so they aren't just cutie cuties sitting around raising chickens. -

[OB][Spoilers] The Real Old Magic
teknopathetic replied to teknopathetic's topic in Stormlight Archive
Clearly they have mutated over time, but the fact that horse imagery were was used by Odium seems to point to somehing. -
The humans seem to think that the old magic refers to the Nightwatcher, but i dont think that is the case. Odium must have had a magic system before he started to invest/corrupt Roshar. I think we have some clues as to what the humans had been using for magic. I noticed that two of the pictures were were given had 9, not 10 aspects: wine and horses. Ryshadium likely were one time invested by Odium, and that is part of the reason why humans can bond them - its a remnant of the old connection to Odium. Perhaps Cultivation has mixed up the magic a bit, but the Shin still bread the horses on the Human Reservation The 8 colors of wine with a spot for the 9th? I have no idea. The chart only shows 8, but has left a spot for a nineth. It also says that wine spren only show up in foriegn nations (closer to Shinivar?). Also, why do winespren show up to someone from Threnody so easily? The first color says it is believed to grant a power, but the rest just go into the flavor. Could there be more to this?
-
it would be interesting if Cusicech is the last of his power level-spren, and the other 9 were turned into the unnmade. Another question is that the shards seem to have made a promise to mix powers infrequently. Did cultivation give the land to Honour and she then took the water for herself ? The ocean has greatshekls, magic purelake fish, and yadda yadda. What else does the water hold?

The true Voidbringers? The Shin?
teknopathetic replied to Hoiditthroughthegrapevine's topic in Stormlight Archive
It is also worth noting that we know the people of the Ire are refugees from another world as well, and their land is isolated and very close to the Shin Reservation. I wonder how many refugee groups made it to Rosahar? We know the Ire are a more recent addition because they both speak of it in lore, and the Nightwatcher found the people of the Ire to foriegn to grant wishes too. -
I have two theories on why Odium couldnt see Renarin in the Diagram 1. Odium is blind to people using his power of forsight. He cant see what others will do with his power, or something like that involving forsight. WOB that each shard is blind to something. 2. Mr.T managed to weite certain parts of the diagram in aliminium, or with something else that blocks odium from reading it. Mt.T may have figured out Odium’s blind spot.
-
Autonomy, the shard living in Taldain (White Sand series) has a tendency to split her essence and create deities on other worlds. We suspect her of being a few religious icons on Scadrial and Nathalis. Some suspect her of helping Odium, but that seems less likely now.

Theory: Sja-anat and Cultivation
teknopathetic replied to Necessary Eagle's topic in Stormlight Archive
The Truthwatcher spren had been corrupted at least by the time of the last desolation. The gemstone library has Truthwatchers claiming that they had seen the future and that they were scared by it. That could have still been a plan by Cultivation, but its a 4000+ year plan. The Unmade are called Unmade for a reason. Seems likely that over time, and with experience, they could be reformed into whatever they used to be. Hooefully Sja-Anat isngetting her groove back. -
There were also many waves of refugees to Roshar, There is more than one type of human that has shown up on this refugee world, and exactly who came from where might be a little more convoluted than it first appears.

I think Smarty Pants T knew that dumb Mr.T would collaborate, and Smarty T has more planned. Mr.T is touched by Cultivation, and Cultivation needs to up her game, and she seems to be doing so (Lift, for instance, or the pruning of Odium's Champion: Dalinar). I am so glad we know that mr.T isn't getting power from Odium; his sight seems to be unique in the cosmere (no fortune involved)
-
Honour + Dominion + Devotion = Unity?
-
What 'really' happened with Mr.T's confrontation with Odium. Mr.T knew Odium would come, and Smarty Pants Mr.T knew that Odium would come and read it, so Mr.T made portion of the Diagram not glow in Odium's light (almost all the words were glowing in Odium's power, but not a certain section that stayed black, and that Odium didn't seem to see). Mr.T exclaims to himself "Renarin", and then hides that fact from Odium as Mr.T negotiates with Odium. This is after the Renarin reveal and the big battle, so what is Mr.T hiding regarding Renarin? Why were the Truthwatchers targeted for corruption? Why were the predictions about Renarin wrong? What is up with that dude?
