the most useless uses for useful powers
kinxer replied to king of nowhere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That is so awful I'm giving you an upvote. In a similar vein (ha, Hemalurgy pun), cut off your arm, then spike it with many times in a vain attempt to grant it sentience. Finally succumb and Awaken it with the Command "Writhe". Bring the arm in your trunk on camping excursions and plant it in the bushes before you tell scary stories. -
Is it specific to any era on Scadrial or is it universal throughout?

The Nature of Allomancy as it relates to AonDor
kinxer replied to tobar14's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Tobar, I appreciate the thought you've put into this theory, but it doesn't work for me. As far as I can tell, the only reason AonDor is so easy to access is that the Dor (which is in the Cognitive Realm, IIRC) is brimming with energy which needs somewhere to go due to the Odium's destruction of the shards on Sel. The cognitive realm is not in that situation on Scadrial. Here's a WoB that states that there are major differences between the Dor and Preservation's "essence": And here's one related to the forceful nature of the Dor, emphasis mine: Secondly, we know that magics manifest on Shardworlds in ways specific to the planet (I can't seem to find a WoB, but I'm certain this is the case), and it seems highly unlikely statistically and more so from a worldbuilding standpoint that two Shardworlds would manifest magics that could be accessed in such a similar manner. Finally, I'm pretty sure Oudeis was replying to Minsk Ghoul when talking about the letters in reference to metals. Minsk Ghoul had suggested that the allomantic symbols (which are probably naturally-derived symbology as opposed to anything magic-related) could be used as the symbols in your model. Oudeis was referring to the English letters which correspond to the Steel Alphabet symbols for the metals. -
I concur with natc. Because the steel/ironsight replaces vision, it can be interpreted as vision would be, probably with similar precision. When considered quantitatively, the amount of information we receive through our eyes is staggeringly enormous, but we deal with it well. Even if that weren't the case, atium and electrum provide solid examples of allomantic metals which provide the burner with the cognitive mechanisms necessary to interpret them. In regard to the OP, I think the model is solid. Well presented indeed.

This seems likely.

Also, is there any significant wordplay going on here?

Use the last of your Stormlight to lash your opponent toward you twenty times the moment your fist impacts their face, resulting in probable face breaking for them, hand breaking for you, and full body breaking for everyone. -

In a similar vein, awaken a computer with the Command, "Create helpful viruses". Watch chaos ensue the world over. -
I must've missed that. Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we currently unaware whether Adonalsium was an active entity? IIRC, all we know is that it existed and then was Splintered. If it wasn't actually active, there's no reason to believe that humans were Invested by it.

Use Feruchemical iron for extreme bodyweight exercises. EDIT: Whoever added the forum feature that turns the "f<metal>" into "Feruchemical <metal>" is a wizard. -
The Truthless?

Well, I'm pretty sure anyone except the burner can traverse across the barrier, but you could use it as a method of holding off enemies to allow allies to retreat/escape. Think Thermopylae (300 Spartans), but scaled down a bit. Also, enemies entering en masse would probably trip over each other, increasing the battle effectiveness.

You replied to the focus and clarity Argent mentioned, but not the mental fortitude. I imagine that would be exactly what helps him stave off insanity.

I bet it is time-honored, right up there with starting wars. Long and glorious tradition, etc. Anyway, while Lightsong was certainly bold, he was never mentioned in my hearing as Lightsong the Cold, and infesting townsfolk's crops and homes with vermin is undoubtedly coldhearted. In fact, it's not even a bold endeavor. How are you to follow in Lightsong's hallowed steps without a more dangerous method of acquiring your livelihood? I say you should turn your lifeless rat army into a traveling circus in which you do high-flying acrobatics while suspended on trapezes consisting entirely of rats with only a rat-based net below you if you fall. ... I think the Lifeless rat-trapeze counts as my useless use for this post. -

Go around Awakening townsfolk's money with the command, "Kill rats." Just in order to render VindicationKnight destitute (or at least make them find an honest job). -
The exorbitant amount of money spent on SFX real-world will instead be spent on metals, especially Gold.
-
Well, if you're going to kill some people anyway, you may as well make the bullets hemalurgic spikes... Also, I guess that might work for Hemalurgy, too... One person creates a bubble with the person to be hemalurged (heh) right on the edge, so close that the person on the outside doesn't have to worry too much about the ricochet as they ever-so-slowly place the spike...
-
This does fit with known behavior of Investiture, too. If people living closer to the Shardpool were somehow measurably more invested than those farther away, they would also have more resistance to the effects of Investiture.
-
Would this not require actually shooting at people...?

I don't think Ecohansen was guessing "cosmere". I think they were asking whether the clue refers to an in-Cosmere object.

Um... Dark Alley, much? Also, to your previous assertion about the plan, where did you get that? IIRC, it's not explicitly stated in the book and is a mystery going into the next one. Are there annotations or something somewhere? Yes, but what would more powerful Allomantic gold even do? Would it actually affect Compounding at all? -
A Checkmate scenario in Steelheart?

If the trait you are removing isn't the gold (though maybe even if it is), you can heal the torn portion of your soul back to return your original power. Thus the hemalurgic power is added to your original power. This does require some weird cognitive stuff, though. It doesn't count if you're not a Gold compounder, though, so I'd say it's suitably useless. Also, you can't be a Mistborn and a Gold feruchemist unless you already have a hemalurgic spike, which begs the question: can you Hemalurgically steal powers granted Hemalurgically? However, you COULD conceivably make yourself into an incredibly powerful Gold compounder with this technique, if multiple spikes actually grant extra compounding power. Which they probably don't. Aaaanyway... Permanently curse yourself by stealing cursed gold then burning it allomantically so you can't replace it. EDIT: Ninja'd. -
The Shin? That is, Stone Shamans?
