the most useless uses for useful powers

I'd say no, because you just won't have time to process it. Unless you were a full Feruchemist and were drawing gratuitous amounts of mental speed.Use the Surge of Friction (if this is possible) to set yourself on fire and stay alive using Progression. Use the Surge of Friction to make yourself slick while walking in ice to activate Hard Mode. -

While my approach to your question about conflicting science and magic, I agree that the Harry Potter approach is badly handled, but the previous statements about improving magic with science (engineering, etc.) and vice-versa seem like the best justifications to me. In addition to that is the idea of the path of least resistance. If one can either go through trial-and-error to create some piece of technology or harness already-available magical techniques, it'll be easier to do the latter and thereby blend magic and science. Over time there would be progression in terms of understanding and scientific development, but it would take a great deal longer and (assuming progression only up to present technology) probably still blend with magic, at least in terms of power (electrical, mechanical) generation. Anyway, I'll add to the list of books Imager by L. E. Modessit. It has a magic system that is an odd but interesting blend of imagination and hard physical laws, and there are definitely guns and cannons and such. I've only read the first book, which was set in a single city, but there were mentions of a nation that is highly industrial and disdains magic.

I saw it the other day almost on a whim, and I agree with all previous posts that it is an excellent movie. What really struck me was the use of the mix tape to provide music that's intrinsically linked to the plot and characterization, and that the music was played only when it was playing in the movie and with perfect timing in regards to the plot. All that said, I did notice a few discontinuities, such as the one with Drax's literal interpretation that Swimmingly mentioned. They were easily forgivable in light of the movie as a whole, however. Fitting with the theme of odd rating systems: Two emerald broams, a sapphire mark, twelve ruby chips, and a garnet chip out of five sapphire marks.

Oh. Would this really work, though? Lashings deal with the Spiritual connection to gravity, I thought. I've not looked at how the Spiritual Realm works, but would it not just work the same way as the Cognitive Realm with each object or creature taken as a whole? Also, to avoid posting with out some sort of contribution: Use a Reverse Lashing on a planet. Use a Reverse Lashing to become the center of attention Awaken a mannequin with orders to remain still Use a spanreed to scratch that place on your back you can never quite reach -

Mold clay/dough using the Surge of Cohesion Lash an object to itself Incorrectly spike yourself by pulling the spike into you with Iron Impress people by bench pressing enormous weight by repeatedly lashing the barbell upwards with a little bit of Stormlight Flare Atium to see the ends of television shows so you can spoil it for everyone else Compound enormous amounts of Luck for a single coin flip Store Warmth occasionally and tap it when you're holding cute woodland creatures for ACTUAL warm fuzzies Tap Wakefulness while drinking gratuitous amounts of coffee Store Weight and catch hold of a moving ceiling fan Store or tap Strength to fit perfectly into any clothing -
Alright, so all we know about the strength of Lines of Vigor (LoV) is that it's based on "the size of the curve." As vague as that is, I find it unlikely that it refers to amplitude for two reasons. First, it seems to make more sense that the benefit of a line with greater amplitude would be the ability to hit targets more easily because the "projectile" is larger. Second, lines with greater frequency have sharper crests, which might parallel the strength determination of Lines of Warding, making the LoV stronger with greater frequency. I know Weiry and Kurk talked a little about this, but I've not yet seen a full discussion.

Why Joel didn't become a Rithmatist (spoilers)
kinxer replied to blackmagic3's topic in The Rithmatist
I've not seen an analysis of "fourth entity removed" considering that it doesn't actually deal with removal of something from the Shadowblaze, so here goes: "Removed" as a word has a couple meanings other than as a near synonym to "taken." One in this situation would be telling the reader to disregard certain information. So the author could mean to "take the fourth entity out of the equation for a moment." To me, this could suggest that the process is only undeterminable if one disregards this fourth entity. Alternately, the fourth entity to be disregarded could be the guiding force (mind, perhaps) of the Shadowblaze. So if you knew the way they think, you might be able to predict their choices. The other meaning of "removed" that I thought of was the use in phrases like "first cousin, once removed." In that case, it's used generationally, but I was thinking it could be used almost in terms of hierarchy. In that sense, it would mean that either the Shadowblaze is being controlled or ruled by three higher beings, hierarchically, or it is at the top of such an arrangement. That use doesn't make much sense, though. All of this is, I think, unlikely, but I thought it might spur some discussion. -

So, this somewhat amuses me because, assuming that allomancy cannot in fact be imbued on objects and that some Ferring/Feruchemist manages to do the thing with negative mass (which I don't think would work, as it would require the Feruchemist to store the absence of mass in her metalmind, which she doesn't have to give, as she actually has mass), this would require a big ship with a bunch of Ferrings/Feruchemists on either end propelling the ship. It's almost like a bunch of people propelling their ship through space via stationary bicycles, in terms of them providing the impetus, and the idea tickles me. Interesting concept, though.

Since I try to be thoughtful about decisions I make, I'd choose Oracle. That way, I can burn Electrum in tough situations and maybe see a way out I hadn't thought of. Secondly to that, though, it's a tie between Pulser and Tineye, both for practical reasons. A Pulser doesn't have to wait for boring things like commercials or doctor's waiting rooms, and Tineye Savants can do what Kal Dell was talking about in terms of Spook's breadth of ability in HoA. Third for me would probably be Lurcher, since it would be so helpful to softly pull objects toward you for convenience. Also, being able to disarm people pointing guns at me would be nice.

It seems more likely to me that (as has been previously surmised) the field/wall that lines of forbiddance project is more of a 3D by-product of the drawn line than an actual part of it. I think the chalkings chew through the actual chalk as opposed to the field, so an upside-down line of forbbidance would only work for stopping 3D entities.
