How Did You Become Cosmere Aware?
Quantus replied to Through The Living Glass's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Came to Sanderson through WoT. I loved his writing there so I looked up other books and found era1 Mistborn, which I marathoned in a few days of a beach vacation. Not long after I picked up Elantris, Emperors Soul and Warbreaker, and noticed Hoid as a recurring presence. I knew authors like Steven King liked to have some loose connectivity at a vague multiverse level, so I was expecting that when I started looking into it. Never expected it have the intricacy of the cosmere, or for it to be a literal shared region of space, etc. -
Which Aether did you bind?

Just a devil's advocate statement, but Not necessarily. Some non-sapient Spren existed pre-shattering and this spren eventually became the Stormfather. But WOB does say BigA prevented spren from gaining sapience back then. So it could be that the three Spren consider their Birth to Sapience to be their beginning, and that 's likely to be an elevation that H&C would have needed to do after they arrived.

Theory: Feruchemical determination is actually Intent
Quantus replied to Quantus's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I dont see how that's relevant? As much as 3/4 of the feruchemcial table is not Spiritual, but they all still exist in there feruchemical system. Also Memory is not Understanding, it's literally just Memory of past events. It's not skills, not understanding, not muscle memory, or any of the other things. You can store your memory of reading the book, but that doesnt remove broader the education and mental expansion and world understanding that you grew into while reading it (and you cannot store any of those things in Copper). -
Theory: Feruchemical determination is actually Intent
Quantus replied to Quantus's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Sure, but being able to block an ability does not make them the same thing, as evidenced by the fact that Sense and Investitures and Connection, etc are all their own metals. You can remove/Store all the memories of your homeland and you then would no longer know anything about it. But that probably isnt going to remove your spiritual Connection to that homeland (given how much larger a role that has realmically), and it definitely does not Replace the realmic role of Connection, the way you are saying it would with an Intent metalmind. -
Theory: Feruchemical determination is actually Intent
Quantus replied to Quantus's topic in Cosmere Discussion
You need to know about an obscure or supernatural Sense to be able to store it, you'd need to know you have a Power to store it. Neither of those are redundant to the Copper Memory of those capabilities. Especially since Copper store Memories but not overall Knowledge, it cannot store skills or Muscle memory, etc. -

I was replying to that original thread but Ill move it here and add some for your more recent post. I dont think this view of Determination works with the evidence: The manic state represents an increase over the baseline, contrasted to the depressive state that is a decrease from that baseline, but the Unit storage model doesnt allow for an increase over the natural state like that. It's likely more of a Cognitive than a Spiritual aspect of the person, but both are viable possibilities for that metal quadrant. I think it's closer to the hypothetical Tappable Aluminum for Identity in that it is still a sort of Investiture based pattern coding like Copper Memories, but more like with Identity where it has a relevant volume/intensity aspect with its magical interactions. It would most naturally arise in instances of opposed Will/Intent/Determination situations, but I could see it becoming far more relevant in the later mechanization of the metallic arts where it would become helpful to store and reproduce the Intent aspect most magics and/or realmic workings; spren make that part easy for Rosharan fabrials but Scadrian magics is very likely have some counterpart baked in. I really dont agree with your assertion that Cosmere Intent is that binary or that it is synonymous with Memory, but Im not sure how to argue it without things dragging into a philosophic conversation and Im trying not go get too distracted and keep it in realmics (but forgive me if I fail). For the rest, yes, that Marsh/Will example would be the sort of Determination that I'd think should be storable in a hypothetical Intent Metalmind. If the Intent is left wildly unfocused it become a very general Intent to Do Stuff that looks like mania when tapped, and when non-specifically stored it's a lot like the mental inertia of depression. But the idea is that if you stored/tapped a more specific Intent like "I Dont Want Ruin's Control" and/or "I want To Be Free" it could boost precisely that sort of Cognitive contest. Granted that may not be all that practical out of the box without a ton of foresight and prep-work, but a compounder store a little and compound blast a ton at need. Let me give you another realmic example of the aspect I think we are talking about: Command Breaking requires a minimum heightening to Override an existing Command. That's where the Intent Volume of a scaled Store/Tap would come in. -
Largely Baseless Theory: F!Electrum will prove quite useful

Search function fails me again! (or it's just me, which is also likely) -
This is not my theory but I saw it on reddit and it's a fascinating take, and it solves an issue Ive been having with the oddly specific and limited (seeming) application of Electrum as just a Manic/Depressive slider. It also has exciting implicaions for Electrum as a core part of the mechanization of Investiture in the future, as it would capture a piece that previously required a living Intelligence to provide. What do you all think? The core argument is:
-
When faking the "normal" function of her Soulcaster, Jasnah broke one of the three gems from over-use so that seems to be the norm.
-
Because the whole basis of the sphere-Gem economy is based on their usefulness to active Soulcasting, I believe it can be stored in external gems and siphoned into the soulcaster actively, assuming that nation knows the tricks (tuning forks etc). But without that it would mean those big chasmfield emeralds would have to be cut down to bracelet sizes and continuously swapped into the Soulcaster, which limits more but may be what is happening in Alethkar most of the time.

No (or at least not as of present-day Roshar).

videogame rpg ideas for a game im' thinking about making.

"tpp 1-2"? -
That's actually not true, friction is not the only source of drag. Even with zero surface friction there is inertial drag from the mass of air that is getting compressed and/or shoved out of the way, and these forces become far more significant when you reach the speed of sounds of whatever atmosphere you are in. For the math, it will be fundamentally different and more complicated on Roshar where gravity and the atmosphere are both non-standard for earth, so assume Scadrial for ease. It's not an easy calculation without a lot of assumptions because the math all starts at the chemical energy released by the gunpowder mix, and then it will depend on the bullet size and shape. Also, a frictionless bullet is not going to react to barrel rifling, so you'll have to find some other way to impart spin on the bullet, or it might prove no more effective than a musket-ball.

We always talk about Lift becoming a Bendalloy compounder but consider making one aetherbound. They'd have nigh-infinite water.

Let me chase this line a bit more with some hypothetical examples, tell me if I have it right: Per WOB a Radiant with Breaths could fuel surges by using up those Breaths; this would Not be Compounding. Given the malleable nature of Breaths and the way they will adopt the Identity of their target when gifted, I strongly suspect they could be Commanded to enter an existing (ie Charged) metalmind and Charge it up by converting one Breath's worth of Investiture into whatever the metalmind was tuned to. This would be Compounding because it required Awakening and not just the possession of Breaths. If an Allomancer were to gain the ability to breath Stormlight (became a Squire, maybe), they should logically be able to fuel Allomancy with their own held Stormlight just like Purified Dor, but this would not be not Compounding. If an Elantrian Allomancer were able to fuel their Allomancy with Dor simply because of their Nature it's not Compounding, but if they did anything with actual AonDor it would be. So fueling one magic system with another Investiture because you already have it in your physical body is not Compounding, but if the process requires specific steps involving some Magic system makes it compounding. Yes?

I have a very random theory: I think Color, or perhaps cognitive Vibrance, is a form of minute Investiture granted to objects that have been Observed. I believe that a specific example of this is seen in how most Shadesmar crystal plants are black but the occasional one comes in vibrant colors, I think those are the ones that have been Observed, and (just like spren) transformed in part by it. I think that same basic Vibrance Investiture is what Heightenings augment in an aura affect and what Awakening uses to initiate the movement of Investiture without depleting the Breaths themselves. If that theory has any validity, then the closest Feruchemical storage route would be Nicrosil for a form of raw Investiture.
-
In that order: F-Steel, A-Gold, A-Chromium. The first to would round each of them out with one of the most powerful Compounding combo's, and Leeching plays well into Marasi being a magic countermeasure that leans into the use of Ettmetal Grenades.

Fwiwi: Hoid is "not exactly 100% human anymore" and his spiritweb is "Weirder than a Savant".

It certainly could be, or at least be a Symbol for Adonalsium itself (if not a Godmetal per say). It doesnt actually go so far as a 1/16 motif to indicate the Shattering, so the quadrant theme could just be representative of Adonalsium's Dawnshards. And arguably it could be all of the above, I dont think the idea conflict with each other.

In this weeks update, what does 631 mean?
Quantus replied to halo6819's topic in General Brandon Discussion
That might line up pretty well with the Words of Radiance Kickstarter going live. -
Honestly, I dont think it will be in the cards for Hemalurgy at a fundamental level, and I think making a more powerful spike is just going to make a bigger crack. The idea of Investiture being used to fill the cracks in the spiritweb is a metaphor based on the Kintsigu idea of using Gold to repair broken pottery, and I think you just cant fill cracks in delicate pottery with the chisel you used to make them.

Fair warning that I cant do it well because I havent gotten around to reading The Sunlit Man, and Im given to understand it included a lot of juicy Dawnshard content. So I can explain my reasoning but just understand I am missing a big chunk of the data. A Dawnshard, like a Shard, is both the power and the title of the one holding it. There are 4 of them, per WOB one of them is different from the rest (but we dont know how), Hoid used to be one and it's the reason he cannot so much as consider eating meat or causing physical harm to himself or others without becoming incapacitated (so for example he had to get somebody else to knock his tooth out for him). He can cause Cognitive harm, and can punch a ghost in shadesmar (to his surprise). He has no particular philosophic problem with causing Harm (or letting others do it for him), it's a limit imposed on him by the Dawnshard. The Limit is relative to his perception, so he could be tricked into eating meat, and could probably rationalize lab-grown meat slurry. The Dawnshard Mural strongly implied the four can be categorized with the Shards into 4 quadrants similar to the Metallic Arts Charts. WOB (and spoilers from TSM I've seen) say it's called a Torment and that it takes being a Dawnshard for a long time to develop (sounds like a form of Savantism to me). For Lirin, WOB confirms he's A) Kaladin's biological Father, b) Not A Worldhopper, and c) philosophically a Pacifist to the extent that he'd let more people die to keep it from being his Fault than act to kill one and save Many (in the context of the Trolley Problem. https://wob.coppermind.net/adv_search/?query=&date_from=&date_to=2024-02-21&speaker=&tags=lirin&ordering=rank

I dont think so, from what you describe. Spikes arent metalminds even if they are occupying the same chunk of metal, so you could Compound all you want into storage but unless you are actively tapping those reserves your spiritweb doesnt get any more invested. If you managed to Store in existing Charged spikes then those spike would be more resistant to things like supercharged steel pushing, but it wont interface with or augment the part that is plugged into your spiritweb. It would be Way easier to just wear an aluminum hat, thought for pure investiture its Breaths/Heightening's.
