Compounding Reforged Metalminds
The One Who Connects replied to 8bitBob's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I did say the first two sounded pretty unlikely. Funnily enough, that "extreme example of Pewter" is actually why I suggested that your idea could give F-Steel. Per Brandon: You can't get the investiture out of an impure alteration, but the Investiture stays. So I imagined that you could get Investiture out by making it a pure composition. It just happens to be a different one than you started with, so you get a different power. Investiture isn't technically altered, merely the keyhole to let it in is changed. For Allomancy, it's the (molecular?) pattern of the metal that shapes the power, like the design of Aons do. For Feruchemy to be able to draw distinctions between the metals for storing, they have to follow something that says "this is Iron, store Weight" or "this is Steel, store Speed." Have I gone too far in assuming that it follows the same pattern Allomancy does, or did I just not explain it well enough to begin with?(I've done that a lot lately..) Fair enough. World record for the heaviest track runner. Honestly, I feel like it'd find a way to give both, but without the separations they had when being stored. -
Compounding Reforged Metalminds
The One Who Connects replied to 8bitBob's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I feel like there was a thread about this before, but it might've just been whether it would still be considered "iron" enough to withdraw that weight after being forged into steel. I'll see if I can find it, since the answer to that would probably be very relevant to answering this. Anyway, as it stands I see 4 possible outcomes to your idea: It's not "iron" enough to register as holding weight, so it gives A-Steel It's not "iron" but it is still holding F-Investiture, so it gives compounded F-Steel Normal Steel is 96% Iron, so these sound unlikely, but that 4 percent Carbon is enough to make it a different metal... It recognizes the stored power as F-Iron and overwrites the Steel, giving compounded F-Iron It recognizes the stored power as F-Iron and the Metal as Steel, and does something... unforeseen The end result of burning could be compounded F-Iron like #3, or you've somehow made Investiture interfere with Investiture in the same magic system and get some combination of the above choices This thought exercise of yours feels like you've made a Steel Metalmind that stores Weight, which is just straight cheating -
What happens to an object with breath stored in it?
The One Who Connects replied to Aurimus_'s question in Cosmere Q&A
I can't speak to the Spiritual Realm, but on the Cognitive, I imagine it would have an inner glow similar to how metals do on Scadrial. The Investiture symbolizes power, and provides the glow. On the Physical, I don't think much would happen until it gets a lot of Breath. At that point, I figure it would behave a little like Shardplate or a mostly-filled Metalmind: invisible to steelsight(assuming it's a metal object) and maybe even have some resistance to wear and tear -
To use your own analogy, the identity is the key. The Metalminds have two doorways, an Allomanctic one and a Feruchemical one. Compounding opens both doors, but when the Metalmind isn't yours and the metal is viable: it only opens one door because the locks aren't the same. That path is the Allomantic one, so you get that power, separate from the Feruchemy, but you can still feel it pressing against the door. Does that make sense or have I misinterpreted in some way?

Given how the cognitive realm on Scadrial is not beads, I don't think there's one for the Cosmere or even the Roshar system. I suppose there could be one for the planet of Roshar, but it'd be buried under all of the other beads of everything else on the planet. So if it does exist, I see it as unreachable. As for this WoB, I'd like to see it if you have a link handy. Specific wording and context gives us all kinds of clues to use.

compiling list Complementing powers
The One Who Connects replied to Oversleep's topic in Cosmere Discussion
None taken. It sounded right in my head. As for invis illusion.. Having to make eyeholes to see is right, as I remember Shallan not being able to see through her fake wall during one of her "Veil" chapters. This is reminding me more and more of Refractionary and/or David's thoughts about Illusion Epics. Are we sure Reckoners isn't Cosmere -

Armor for your armor.. I have a sneaking suspicion that somehow, someway, that wouldn't work as well as we are imagining, but for the life of me, I cannot place why. Re: Spelling I can think of several words that I know for a fact are English words that it says are spelled wrong, only for me to check and find out I'm right. If it doesn't suggest a proper way to spell it on right click, then I go with what I came up with. -
Hemalurgy: Ethics, Mechanics and Uses Going Forward
The One Who Connects replied to 8bitBob's topic in Cosmere Discussion
His morals were never in question, but Ruin-like control over spiked individuals goes a lot further towards precise spike placements than coercing someone via words. Especially if he wants to spike himself and live. But as 8bitBob said, he'd probably kill them regardless of who it was, so it's a moot point. I later realized that your trick could be the compounding Allomancy he did, so fair enough. While simple to do, the difficulty to hacks is figuring out how to do them. Which is why I doubted he would have learned that in his glimpse of Hemalurgy. They usually require a leap in logic, making connections most people wouldn't. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on the Realmatic aspect of the Terris giving him the edge to make those leaps though. Technically, he was still alive because while his age was extremely high, he was in quite good health all things considered. Would he have lived very long afterword? Probably not, but he did survive losing his F-Atium. I did say it was arguing semantics. As long as you can see it in a way that works, then the theory can work. -
Having not read Partinel, I cannot say for sure, but perhaps the delay has to do with scale. A full God died and there was immediate fainlife, "chunks" of dead Ambition landed there and the Evil showed up much later. It could potentially account for at least some delay. Overall it's not bad, but I feel like there was a WoB saying that the evil was related to a shard we knew, and I don't think AU(and thus Ambition) was around at that time. I'm on mobile and can't find it that easily, but depending on the date or exact wording, your idea could still work

Hemalurgy: Ethics, Mechanics and Uses Going Forward
The One Who Connects replied to 8bitBob's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Another sign that the Coppermind needs lots of updates on the road to Oathbringer. I couldn't find that at all, so I ignored the thought until I could check in the books. I don't think this completely rules out him knowing about what burning a H-Spike would do however, as burning a spike is technically Allomancy, which he would learn about from holding the power of the Well. It's a stretch, but Brandon gave us way too much wiggle room when he said that "he[TLR] knew a lot of things that nobody knows." -
Hemalurgy: Ethics, Mechanics and Uses Going Forward
The One Who Connects replied to 8bitBob's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Ignore me while I act incredibly pedantic and say that it's "Allomantic" Anyway, his incredible strength in Allomancy was already explained via two things: 1) He used the power of the Well and rebuilt himself to be very powerful in Allomancy.[In the WoB that it wasn't Lerasium] 2) Brandon has implied that there is a way to compound that increases Allomantic Strength. Conveniently, two more things. 1) For all his knowledge, he could not figure out how to make anything beyond Koloss, Kandra and Inquisitors during his thousand year reign. I feel like he would have learned more of how Hemalurgy functioned naturally before somehow figuring out how to hack the system. 2) If he could do this, why use physical Hemalurgic Spikes on himself? The soul interference from piercing skin plus the high amount of F-Atium power in his bracers should've been enough for them to not get Steel/Iron lines. Closing Thoughts: Your sDNA gene splicing could count as compounding to boost Allomancy, since Brandon only says "compound" without specific mentions of Feruchemy or Hemalurgy. He would definitely not share this secret with Inquisitors, for the purpose of control, which means that either he controlled a Kandra or performed the spiking himself. (despite the risks, I wouldn't put it past him to keep his secrets completely secret) I still wonder about what power his Bracers granted that he couldn't do in your method. Bit of semantics, but at what point does something cross the line and stop being considered "done via Hemalurgy?" If his dramatic effects were due to hyper-strong Allomancy, then it seems like they are pulled off by Allomancy, regardless of if he used Hemalurgy to become that strong. "Pulled of by Hemalurgy" seems like it would imply some side effect of Spike-granted power that cannot be done via natural means (Lerasium beads would've made him strong, so what's different about using the spike way?) -
I think the same, but cannot prove it yet. Searching Theoryland, there is nothing via the keyword "husband", "boyfriend" or "Drehy" besides Brandon saying that Drehy is gay at two points. It's probably on Reddit, but I've never been good at perusing that from scratch. Scratch that, it's on twitter and only says "romantic interest" And he mentions "the family and romantic relationships of the bridgemen are becoming a larger part of the story." Still no direct specificity on Drehy though

compiling list Complementing powers
The One Who Connects replied to Oversleep's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well if we make the assumption that you can Surgebind in your own Plate because it is your own Plate, then it shouldn't interfere. He could always despawn the helmet when he says the Command if need be. About the Mistcloak, you gave me an opportunity so I took it. I see where you are going with normal clothing now. Perhaps this Radiant is one that forgoed Plate in favor of less conspicuous(and easier to put on) attire. I added Copper more for if you can store the mental image from a Command in a Coppermind. You can remember things that you envisioned/imagined in your head, so it might count. That way, you can store the visualizations of complicated commands in a place where they don't degrade or get shuffled around. Zinc would probably still be the better choice, but I like to give other powers just as much relevance. -
A huge bunch of mistborn and cosmere metal questions

Was there? Well, you are probably right then. All I remembered is that P&R had their own Mist Spirit and that in some way, Ruin manipulated the Deepness(which was of Preservation) -

The One Who Connects replied to Oversleep's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Give him a Mistcloak. Stoneward Awakener would be pretty resourceful, so I'd say A-Pewter with F-Zinc or F-Copper is the best bet. Extra thinking time/extra memory space to come up with/store commands and/or the visualizations of them would make Awakening in the fray more powerful. Stormlight heals so you don't need F-Gold, F-Pewter in hardened clothing would be.. uncomfortable. Senses via the Heightenings don't have the loud noise/bright lights drawback that A-Tin does. Both Stormlight and A-Pewter provide speed so you don't need F-Steel -
A huge bunch of mistborn and cosmere metal questions
The One Who Connects replied to Fluffy's question in Cosmere Q&A
Well, there's two things about that. 1) Since the Mist is the Gaseous form of Preservation's power, it should only be able to consolidate into Lerasium (the solid form). It's like water vapor will only consolidate into ice, not other things like frozen yogurt 2) We really don't know, but I imagine that it is beyond the technological capability and intellectual capacity of non-shard individuals for a long time. Mistborn may be getting techy, but they don't really know too much about how Investiture actually works, like Khriss and Nazh seem to -

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
The One Who Connects replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Apology up front, but I've spent too long without venting a set of questions on here, so there are quite a few this time around. AonDor Questions: Does drawing an Aon larger make the effect larger and/or more powerful? Are any currently known Aons an exception to this? Can Aon effects be stacked? ie: would overlaying 4x Aon Ashe mean 4x brightness? Do the modifier lines have to be drawn on the same scale as the base Aon? Clarification: Draw a 1ft by 1ft Aon Daa with modifiers, if I make the base Aon 2ft by 2ft, do I also have to double the size of the modifiers? If so, what effect would keeping them the same size have on the Aon when I use it? Can you build an On/Off switch into the modifiers of an Aon? ex: A flashlight using Aon Ashe for light Ancient Elantrians used Aon Ehe to make lanterns that never went out. Given how newly drawn Aons are weaker away from Elantris, would these lanterns(that are already activated) start to dim as they got further from the city of Elantris? If not a RAFO, would this hold true for all Aons that are already activated? Does Aon Aha ["Breath, Air" per Ars Arcanum] produce air in AonDor? I got an Elantrian Scuba Diver image in my head this one time... If so, could it be used to have a never emptying oxygen tank or would it continue filling/raising pressure to the point that the tank bursts? If he somehow doesn't RAFO this, can you prevent pressure bursting with the right modifiers? Allomancy Questions: The point where someone has enough power that they start leaking mist has been given the fan-name of "Mistpoint." Do you have an actual term for this or can we use this term as actual Canon? We've speculated that Mistpoint marks the strongest point that an Allomancer can be(barring Ascension). Are we correct in this assumption? Would Mist-fueled entities [ie: Elend and Marsh during the final battle] be considered as at Mistpoint? How close would the Lord Ruler get to Mistpoint by Duralumin burning his Allomantic Metals? You've said that Elend could only match TLR soothing by using Duralumin. For reference, was the Lord Ruler only burning or was he flaring brass during his intense soothing scenes? Suppose you could reliably steal 80% Allomantic Strength with a Spike. That 80% would differ slightly from person to person correct? Pretty sure we know this already, but just in case. In another WoB, you have said that burning Pewter gives 2x strength and flaring gives 3x. Mathematically, that means flaring gives you double what burning gives. Does this hold true for all metals? Clarification: In essence, Burn = Strength+1, Flare = Strength+2. Thus Flare is 2x the effect of Burn. If no, which metals does this math work with? / Which metals does this math not work with? Gen. Purpose Roshar Questions: Is Thaylenah a mercantile culture? Captain Tozbek runs a shipping business, Rysn and Vstim trade all over Roshar, Tvlakv is a slave trader, Barmest sells books in Kharbranth, Vstim is legally Rysn's father until he considers her ready to be a merchant on her own, several people of several cultures speak Thaylen well, etc.. Rysn and Vstim traded in both Shinovar and the Reshi Isles. Thaylen, Reshi, Aimian and Shin are all in different language families, yet Axies the Collector(Aimian) spoke Thaylen well, the Shin they traded with(Thresh) and the Purelaker guide(Gu) spoke it very well, and the Reshi trader(Talik) spoke Thaylen well enough for Rysn to question his country of origin. Taravangian knows a Shin proverb in its native tongue. Is the language barrier thinner than we would expect it to be? Can you compare the level of difference between some languages with an Earth equivalent? ie: Going from Alethi to Horneater is like English to Russian, or something like that to give us a idea of how different these languages really are Does Azir have a standing army, and would their "by the book"/paperwork oriented lifestyle translate into a well regimented force and chain-of-command? (assuming they filled out the necessary forms to go to war) When Iri and Rira split, was it a peaceful split or was there a civil war of sorts? Additionally, how long ago did this split happen? What do the Reshi actually do to interpret the Tai-Na on whether they should go to war with a nearby island? Cosmere Questions: Would a Shardblade kill the limb of a Kandra, or do they have some form of resistance/immunity to this? If they have a resistance, why/how does it resist a Shardblade cut? Would a Shardblade physically cut the "bones" of a Kandra with a true body made of stone/metal or would the limb still have to be killed first? We seem to be fixated with FTL and space travel, but are there any worlds that would be more interested in exploring the deep seas of their world? If so, have we seen this world? and/or Do we know enough about the culture/magic system to figure out how they would explore the deep seas? -
Fair enough. "eject" isn't the same thing. I guess I interpreted it as allowing the Spren to leave(like they were somehow trapped) and made a jump in logic. I slightly disagree. "There's a measure of will behind it"

We have a WoB that when they switch forms, "the Spren is released." That certainly implies that the Spren in question is allowed to leave. On a somewhat related note, I feel that they can only change once per Highstorm. Nobody mentions trying again, Eshonai says that there was "an element of chance with the transformation(singular)[28]" Also, the scene where Kaladin was strung up in the Highstorm did not seem like it lasted more than several minutes, so even if they are able to change more than once, the storm has moved on by the time they see what form they came out as, so it is no longer feasible.

I don't know whether it is allowed to be discussed, but I do see people mention it in its current state as non-canon. Meaning that it might not be as useful of a discussion piece for future revelations. If we are allowed to discuss it, I'd label it with Liar of Partinel Spoilers, and probably a "may not be canon" disclaimer like some MAG discussions had. If we are not allowed to speak of it, I'm sure someone who knows more will tell you.

I was gonna bring back this thread in a bit (still gotta work out logistics of some things) but figured I'd respond to this first. This size comparison is entirely incorrect. Per the Mistborn Annotations(HoA Chapter 76), the geographical area of the planet that the Final Empire covers is fairly small. Secondly, if you are calling TFE 3,100 miles across, it's bigger than the USA. Spoilers for Size(mobile does image size.. badly, so I'll resize it later if need be. edit v3: I give up on the image, google the width of the US. addtionally the phrase "in / a / few / days" was rewritten as "this post is attempting to skirt the rules" so that's something

Bold Stormlight Archive Predictions

I actually speculated that that could've potentially been done if multiple Windrunners acted together, so I kind of support this idea. Maybe not the sky though, that'd level a building on the way back down... -
"That's a RAFO"
-
Well, we know that the city of Elantris was built "hundreds of years if not over a thousand years" before the book takes place. And we know that the first Elantrians likely predate the city, since it was built as an Aon that only Elantrians can draw. So not only can we safely assume that the Ire were around a while ago, there exists a large span of time for them to have shown up in.
