The choice between Shardbearer and Radiant is an exploration into whether or not people want the power enough to submit themselves to limitations. So onto the Poll... to quote myself from the last time we had one of these topics: That's my big three, and here's my thoughts on the other choices: Shardplate is a pain as a non-Radiant, leaky spheres are a pain as a Radiant, Mistborn kinda feel a little overrated to me nowadays, I have my doubts about my success without a "Hemalurgy for Dummies," and I don't know enough about the Dakhor to say either way. I ultimately went with Feruchemist for the capacity for experimentation, but Awakener nearly won out because of the ridiculous stealth potential. An Elantrian has to deal with being glowy and carrying around a bunch of metal plates. Feruchemists have all that metal jewelry making them stand out(and making them a target for muggers). An Awakener can just store most/all of their breath into parts of their normal attire and not have any aura at all.

Do bear in mind that we don't know whether or not the God Beyond actually exists, giving it yet another parallel with the Christian God Not specifically Justice, Jealousy, etc... but you remember right. I feel like the "force determining how it shattered" being the people there wouldn't work, if only for he fact that Hoid got offered one of the Shards that one of the other 16 Vessels got. If it was based on the Intents of the people present, shouldn't there have been one for him anyway(making 17 Shards)?

Shard Numbers and how do they interact.
The One Who Connects replied to Hawkido's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Fortunately for you, we have a WoB on the subject. It was the Intent of Ambition that worried Rayse. You raise a good point. What is the actual purpose of the epicanthic fold? Why do humans have them? Google is being a bit unhelpful with finding an answer to those questions, but I've found some interesting facts and conjecture while searching:- 41 replies

If you were a surgebinder with 2 spren...
The One Who Connects replied to Watchcry's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yea sorry, not the Diagram specifically so much as Taravangian. Pre-Diagram, Gavilar confided in Taravangian about his visions from the Stormfather, which Graves mentions as the only reason they(the Diagrammists) know the term "Everstorm." Admitting that you've been receiving visions implies a rather high level of trust, especially given the Vorin view on future-sight. They'd have to have gone through something in the past to build that trust. -

The One Who Connects replied to Watchcry's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'd like to talk to you about Gavilar Kholin, and his association with the Sons of Honor and the Diagram. As an aside, the best combination I see would be Windrunner and Stoneward. We'll have to see what the rest of their oaths are, but for now, the suspected Stoneward Oath of "I will stand when others fall" fits pretty well with the Windrunner Ideal of Protection. Although it is an interesting thought experiment to consider the possibility of a Windrunner/Skybreaker cross if they lived in a society that had a completely just and fair system of laws. Just thought I'd put that out there -
"maybe something is interfering." You've just given me quite a few possibilities from this one snippet. Perhaps the Nahel Spren tried, but could not succeed because the Listeners already bonded a Spren. Perhaps the Nahel Bond would be different than a normal Listener bond and the Nahel Spren tried the Listener way. Perhaps.. ooh, that's gonna take a bit of creative wording(I'll try to get back to you if I can come up with a way to put thoughts into words) Suffice to say, if the Spren promised to bond and were unable to because of complications, but were unable to figure out why it didn't work, the Listeners might see that as them going back on their deal, but the Spren don't have the necessary understanding to explain that it isn't their fault. Does this make sense?

How did Kelsier and Demoux become misting/mistborn?
The One Who Connects replied to Master Knapper's topic in Mistborn
As for Demoux, I believe it was explained in the annotations that the ones who were snapped had very (many generations) distant ties to allomantic bloodlines. You've got a good memory Faceless. From the Annotations: So Knapper, the Mists were acting like Lerasium and increasing people's Allomantic potential. Annotations x2: So what all this amounts too is that Spool is right, and we have the proof to back it up. the mists only began snapping people after Preservation made them. Before HOA, they had no affect on people. Good memory again Faceless. From Idaho Falls back on '09: Leras sent the Mists into action as a reactionary response, not as a preemptive action. As for Kelsier, well.. Spool and Kingsdaughter explained it well enough. His life wasn't that bad before his capture, he's a psychopath with trouble making the emotional connections that would cause trauma, and while he was in the Pits he had Mare. He had someone that kept him going all those weeks. Up until she died, he had hope. And if there's one thing I've learned, it's that hope is one of the most dangerous drugs a person can have. The high can get you through anything, but the withdrawal is... extreme. Case in point: Once Mare died, his world came crashing down around him. -
He made the threshold easier to reach because he wasn't a fan of people beating their children to see if they were Allomancers.

Shard Numbers and how do they interact.
The One Who Connects replied to Hawkido's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Roshar the Planet(most likely). The question in the second WoB uses "on Roshar," which has a very clear implication. And Brandon uses "planets" in the first WoB. Surgebinding does not predate Honor's arrival though. Most everything else does, but IIRC, Brandon has specifically called that one out. Edit: I can't read and glanced over the WoB...- 41 replies

Just gonna casually mention the part where we were originally discussing this with the @Catladyman. Although I will mirror you here: "I have absolutely no clue how fortune works."
-
So to you, it looks like he's saying the spectrum is Hoidsense(Tapping), Average Human, Blithering Idiot(Storing). That's.. hrmm... This feels wrong to me, but I can't put into words the why of the matter.. Let's pull them back here to discuss it. Explain your disagreements if you want. The problem with that is the number of things going on at once. That Fortune could be increasing your chance to land a blow, or increasing your chance to dodge their swing, or increasing your odds of finding a penny on the ground. How do you tell the power of fortune what to increase? Does it increase them all at once? etc...
-
Desperation could be one reason. Another possibility could be that perhaps they glossed over the Parshendi as "too close" and never tried to bond before. They could've been totally wrong but were unwilling to test it out in the olden days, and now this generation of Nahel Spren are more.. adventurous, exploratory.. Maybe none of the Listeners attracted a Nahel Spren in the olden days(as impossible as this seems), and the Listeners just made up the "too close" logic to justify it to themselves.

Shouldn't this be "Sliver"? As Calderis stated, sapience is the requirement. We know for a fact that not all of the original vessels were human, and odds are favorable that not all of the current vessels are either. We also know that Investiture can attain Sapience on its own. I'd call that process something akin to a Shard creating a Vessel for itself(which is what I think happened) He doesn't have to be. It is entirely possible that Adonalsium was from a species that predates humans. An extragalactic species from outside the Cosmere, an extradimensional species(like Calamity, oh wait.. ) etc.. Do I think he is any of those? No, but the possibility remains open. I'd like to talk to you about the Big Bang... We don't know how our own universe was actually created, so this query is not getting answered in Cosmere either. Of note, Roshar(the Continent) is based off the Julia Set. Roshar was specifically "grown by Adonalsium." Combining those two, some conclusions can be drawn(by those more educated than I, as I'm not yet sure what the significance of the Julia Set is on Earth)

I don't see how storing Fortune makes one any different from when not storing it in your example. Tapping gives a very clear benefit, but when storing? Wouldn't the Feruchemist already be blind to the SR Convergences like the rest of us?

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
The One Who Connects replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Alright class, get ready for Today's Fabrial Questionnaire: Given that we learned of the existence of Attractor Fabrials in WoR, it stands to reason that a Repellor Fabrial should be possible. Is this an accurate assumption? (Not asking if we will see one, only if one is possible to create. Gotta dodge them RAFO's) Where does the smoke go? Navani's Attractor Fabrial has to divert the water off the chasm, but Mraize's doesn't appear to divert the smoke anywhere. Is this simply a matter of scale(as there is much less smoke than there is rain), was this just glossed over by Shallan, or is this distinction highlighting something important? (For the "something important" bit, Navani calls them a "new invention" and she's worried that it might "suck the blood out of the people around it," while Mraize's seems to be just fine half a book earlier) Do all Fabrial types have opposites? Augmenter/Diminisher Conjoiner/Reverser Attractor/Repellor(maybe) Alerter/?? Can a singular Fabrial manipulate multiple different things? (I doubt it, but it's always worth asking for completeness) Can a Dual-Purpose Fabrial be created? Ex: A Heating Fabrial that doubles as a Cooling Fabrial if you alter something on it(rotate something, tap a gemstone, pull a lever, etc..) We have a Fabrial in a Dalinar Flashback with two different gemstones on it(Topaz and Heliodor[12]). Is there a set pattern for what each gem/gem combinations allow a Fabrial to manipulate? Augmenter and Diminisher Fabrials work best with "forces, emotions, or sensations." Would it be possible to make Rioter/Soother Fabrials for specific emotions? Is it possible for an Augmenter/Diminisher Fabrial to affect the body's senses? (We know they can affect pain, and Nociception(pain-sense) is technically a sense..) Can Augmenter/Diminisher Fabrials affect sound-waves? (If so, there's potential for Fabrial-Tech Megaphones, Hearing Aids, Silencers, Earplugs, etc...) What are the limits to what an Attractor(or Repellor) Fabrial can push/pull on? I imagine the size of the object is one, but is that the only limitation? Are some objects/materials unable to be affected? Are Alerter Fabrials capable of detecting active usage of Investiture? Would an Aluminum object being thrown into the area set off an Alerter Fabrial? In the same vein, would nearby aluminum cause Fabrials to malfunction in any way? On the flip-side, is it possible to calibrate an Alerter Fabrial to detect the... Investiture Dead Zone that Aluminum creates around it? Can an Alerter Fabrial be set to detect both people and objects at the same time? If not, why not? (Trying to get an idea of what distinguishes a people-detector from an object-detector without directly asking that because it sounds dumb to say out loud) More perfectly cut gems leak Stormlight slower. Would a better cut gem also fill slower and/or get emptied slower when used in a Fabrial? If so, would a perfectly cut gem(or a gem that contains Stormlight perfectly, if they aren't mutually exclusive) be unable to be emptied via the Fabrial? Would wrapping an Infused Gemstone with aluminum prevent it from leaking Stormlight? If so, is there a functional difference between wrapping the gem in aluminum foil as opposed to putting it in a large aluminum box? (basically asking if simply being surrounded by aluminum is enough or if the gem has to be tightly wrapped) And a Slight Excursion into Soulcasting: Is it possible for a scientifically-advanced Soulcaster to soulcast objects into CO2/Oxygen/etc.. specifically, rather than just smoke or air? We've seen Soulcasters turn air into stone in WoR. Can they single out specific gases in the air or are they limited to just "air?" Is there potential for an atmospheric balancing issue in the future since Rosharans don't understand that "air" is a complex mixture of different gases? (I recall Soulcast grain being bland because they don't understand it on a more detailed level to understand how flavor works, so I'm extrapolating) The essence Zephyr is considered as "translucent gas, air," and Vapor includes opaque gas. Does this mean that any gas is valid for Soulcasting purposes? If you filled a mold with water, could you soulcast that water into something else and have it keep it's shape? (Mostly asking because I'm curious why nobody seems to do that on Roshar, when it'd be more efficient than whittling down wood to cast into a metal railing) For the purposes of "perception," would a mold/box have to be either transparent or open in order for one to soulcast the contents inside it? If you want to ask it more bluntly: Is line of sight necessary for Soulcasting? Would a stone pillar soulcast from open air be rougher than a stone pillar soulcast from air in a mold? Are metal and stone more difficult to soulcast into other essences? (Checking for a connection between Soulcasting and Awakening) If you have the right gemstones, can you soulcast something into an object of multiple essences at once? Ex: a stone carved into the shape of a campfire being soulcast into both the logs(wood) and the fire all at once. (You can soulcast things made of multiple essences(humans) into a single one, so I figured the reverse might be possible with practice) Outside of aluminum(probably), are there any materials you cannot soulcast into something else? For clarity's sake, can you soulcast aluminum into something else or is it immune to that too? How far removed from the Ten Essences is too far for something to be soulcast into it? For example: Plastic isn't really one of the Ten Essences at all. Can it be made via Soulcasting? (If others can come up with more examples, maybe we can expand this into its own line of questioning) 32 Questions in today's haul. Remember kids, there's no harm in being thorough. -
If you were a surgebinder with 2 spren...
The One Who Connects replied to Watchcry's topic in Stormlight Archive
Completely missed this scene, but I'm not surprised they can do that. It opens an interesting possibility for your Modern World Fabrial-Tech Thread, since I posited they could fill a mold with water and cast the water into something else rather than whittling down wood into a specific shape. Why not just use open air that's already filling the mold? (I'm using a mold still so you can get more precision in your cast than using open air, since that's more efficient in a modern world like our own) As a sidenote, I'm curious if they could soulcast objects into/from oxygen or CO2 in the far future, rather than just air. It'd be an interesting solution to our greenhouse gas problem , not that they'd need it. To the Ultimate List.. -
How are some of the Five Scholars Siblings
The One Who Connects replied to ILuvHats's question in Cosmere Q&A
I want to think the same, but I'm uncertain. I kinda feel like there should have been some type of priesthood already in existence when Vasher instructed them to safeguard Peacegiver's Treasure and taught them the secret of Mental Commands so they could then teach the God Kings when the need arose. Granted, it might have been a priesthood founded by the Five Scholars(or founded by men who wished to serve the Scholars), making it Post-Scholars, but Pre-Manywar. We don't have enough information, but I'm a little skeptical about Warbreaker the Peaceful just creating a priesthood on the spot after the war was won. That's the kind of thing that would take time to build from scratch. I'll trust Brandon's wording here. From the Annotations: I'm of the opinion that they were actually biologically related, but we'll just have to wait: -
Be aware that there are twelve paragraphs between the Unmade and the Traitor line. Additionally, he curtails his thoughts on the Unmade and moves towards discussing Kingship. All manner of things could have been discussed in that space, leaving our traitor line without any context. yeah it's pretty obvious something's wrong with Ishar's instructions The Heralds have all gone some form of insane. Is it so unbelievable that a genius-turned-madman thinks he's always right? Time on this site has made us jumpy, stretching towards any two points we can connect in the hopes of gaining understanding. Sometimes, a man simply thinks he's right because he believes it, rather than because of some deity feeding him answers.

Have a chat with your friends and family sometime. You might know them well enough to notice sadness in their voice, or joy/etc.. Parshendi rhythms seem like an equivalent, where the cadence of the voice conveys an emotion. Dalinar and Kaladin are the only ones to notice because they are the few who care(and they have the PoV where others don't)
-
Historically, Parshendi Radiants haven't existed yet. That query is a bridge they'll have to cross in the future. Personally, I'm not sure if they could. However, they don't necessarily have to either. Szeth exemplifies this during the battle against King Hanavanar, forgoing his Blade in favor of his Surgebinding. Lashing boulders would certainly distract a Thunderclast, and crush Voidform Parshendi. I do not believe they can be bonded to a normal Spren and a Nahel Spren. The normal bonded Spren prevents them a Voidspren from entering, so it stands to reason... Uncertain. Bonding a normal Spren in a Highstorm can be done regardless of starting form, as you eject that Spren to take in the new one. It's possible that the circumstances may be different for a Nahel Spren. She may have to attract the Nahel Spren and speak the First Oath in order to bond in a Highstorm. She may have to go to Slaveform(no Spren bond) after speaking the First Oath, and it bonds on its own somehow. We just don't know. We don't know. All we know is that that Spren is related to one of the orders and is thus important.

The Oathpact and the last Desolation
The One Who Connects replied to Calderis's topic in Stormlight Archive
True. I still feel that if he discovered something, it had to be somewhat believable, which is a little bit different than him just being wrong. Mostly I'm just curious what he could have "discovered" One of the Listener songs promises a new storm to come. Song of Secrets, Stanza 17 (and Final Stanza) The highlighted lines are of note regarding things being different. -
The Oathpact and the last Desolation
The One Who Connects replied to Calderis's topic in Stormlight Archive
It's clever. I still think Taln could hold out for at least a millennium, but that's another story for another time. My big uncertainty is Brandon saying "What they discovered is not all of them have to." Discovered gives me a vastly different signal than the Heralds just hoping that this would work. -
