  1. Don't worry, the second WoB was a question about Breath anyway. I only managed to find it because it said "Dor" in it By all means continue with your idea. Something out of place usually means something when Brandon is writing, even if it isn't at all what we expect
  2. They didn't exactly understand what your were asking, but they did somehow end up answering this question. Quoth Weltall:
  3. there should be a "hide topic" button for you in the other one since you made the thread. might not show up on mobile if that's what you're on. You've got to manually click on the text area outside of the spoiler box. I'll just say now that I'm objecting to "Ambition+Dor" on principle. As for why Odium's choice of targets: Ambition was the number 1 option, but he couldn't find them, so he took out D&D instead. Meaning that D&D (the Dor) came first, which is why I don't think any of Ambition's power could make it there I actually somehow found one Underline added for emphasis
  4. It'd even further apart when you remember that the Fjordell work with the Skaze, who are splinters of Dominion. That's three Shards thought of within seconds. But to answer your questions, a few people have noticed mentions of ambition in the past, but we all appear to have missed where it said devotion as well... For the Ire, Secret History Spoilers(just in case) Also, you seem to have posted this thread twice
  5. It is a WoB. That's the "plague" in the Purelake that Dalinar mentions in his internal "state of the world" monologue around the end of WoR. Rosharans hardly get sick, so their perspective on what constitutes a plague is... skewed.
  6. I remembered the original topic in the Q&A section. Additional fun fact, the search bar does not appear to read text that is in quoteboxes. This is important, because it means that you have to find quoted WoBs via context clues in your search results. Confirmation of a different type. Compounding is a hack, not a perk. [Upon reread, this WoB has been linked earlier in this thread]
  7. Atium+Duralumin pulls you into the Spiritual Realm, which is why Elend could see Preservation's ultimate plan, Malatium/Gold/Electrum would do.. undefined effects with Duralumin. We don't understand how "getting more" out of those powers works at all, so we can't really guess how it would mix with Duralumin. Lerasium+Duralumin does nothing of real value. I'm trying to find the WoB, but I remember someone asking and Brandon saying that you can't super-boost your Allomantic strength that way. I don't think it[F-Gold] would burn away the metals so much as it would heal the effects of metal poisoning. I was on that same train of thought until a few days ago, when Dyring pointed out particular wording from the Vin vs TLR scene. So it's quite possible he had the raw strength to do exactly that. But this'll turn into a debate of semantics and an essay on Brandon's wording choices...
  8. Windrunners have Gravitation and Adhesion. Cohesion is Willshaper/Stoneward territory. Lift didn't have that much Stormlight. Now I'll have to rewatch that scene, but I believe that Lift could see her Stormlight going to the Larkin, so Rashek would notice that something is going from him to the Larkin, and if that something is his F-Atium, he'll notice immediately that his power was fluctuating. Also, I found the statement that basically say draining a Compounder takes time to do.
  9. I remember someone else's book personalization said that "if he couldn't control his conflicting intents as well as he is, he could have gone by a different name than Harmony" Speculation abounded, but my point here is that this means that the outcomes of both the combination and the split are not set in stone. Actually, I think I have an idea on why he could, but most likely wont become something other than R&P. If we assume that Adonalsium was a "whole personality" (like a human mind, with all the varying emotions/segments) then Harmony is 2/16ths of that Personality. Harmony is only a mixture of a Preserving Mindset and a Ruinous Mindset. For him to split into something that is not Ruin and Preservation, those two mindsets would have to broken in ways that combine into two distinct Intents. Mix and Match aspects of [Ruin] and [Preservation] in a way that gives you two different Intents that are both believable and not just "Destroy almost everything" and "Preserve almost everything." It's not as easy to do as mixing aspects of all 16 Shards into different ones. It's possible, but very unlikely. Even 3 Shards makes it easier, as (Roshar example) Honor-H, Cultivation-C, Odium-O. 1) 1/2H+1/2C[?] 2) 1/2H+1/2O [Justice?] 3) 1/2C+1/2O [?] But with 2 Shards, you just get 1/2R+1/2P or 1/2P+1/2R. You'd have to do different fractions, and that skews the intent towards one side, which ...
  10. Spool already brought up that Nalan carried one for a purpose, rather than just to carry one. But I'm pretty sure that we've had a WoB that Chromium couldn't leech out of a Metalmind unless they were actively tapping it (I'll go search for that in a minute) Yes you could still drain some of his F-Atium, but Chromium doesn't drain it all at once. It drains at a high rate, but if there is enough power to drain, then they have to keep in constant contact. This makes me think that a Larkin would either Take several moments to drain all of it. (makes it a target in a 1v1, hard to defend and keep up the pressure on TLR) Drain until the Larkin was "full" which may/may not be enough to drain him completely (assuming TLR understands and taps less useful minds as filler) Drain a mix and doesn't damage his Atium that much
  11. About the time when conflict either gets barely existent because characters have a solution for everything or you constantly need to stop yourself and go over all the characters power again because all the options got way too complex. A good example here is the magic of Elantris. You can quite literally do anything with AonDor so while the "options" are too complex and you can solve most everything with magic, it doesn't drag the world down because while you can do anything with the Magic, it works in a way that makes conventional problem solving the better options. You want the magic to be important, then make it important. But there have to be situations where using the magic is not the answer. It's the reason that supervillains exist, because having these powers make normal book/movie bad guys irrelevant. If Superhero A is bulletproof, then what use are normal gun-toting gangsters?
  12. That depends on your interpretation of wording. He says "will be Heralds" so if the man claiming to be Taln isn't, then he wouldn't be the PoV Herald Taln.
  13. Biggest issue with these is Brandon's statement in regards to the ever-changing weather patterns on Roshar: So I don't think randomness will actually have precedence in the Cosmere. But that's my opinion, feel free to disagree
  14. guess I remembered the wrong line. Figured the "in her body" that she used at a later point was referring to the metals in her stomach. Actually, given that he had enough strength to push Vin, rattle the doorframe, and push pieces of his stained glass window.. It's the glass that makes me think he might know he can do that, since he can assume metal door hinges and Vin's metal reserves, but no such shortcut for the glass.
  15. Ok, so this may spiral downwards depending on what other terms you understand. Basically, your Spiritweb is what determines what powers you have. Allomancers (and Surgebinders) have to snap first, which is some form of physical/emotional trauma that creates a crack in the spiritweb. These cracks are what lets the Investiture(power of magic) through and gives you the ability to use your powers. Think of your spiritweb like a dam and the Investiture is the water it is holding back. Pulling the power through those cracks make them start to widen. After a certain point, you've made a bigger hole in the Spiritweb and it lets more power through. That's basically becoming a Savant. It lets you do some fancy things with certain powers that you couldn't do normally, but can also have some negative effects. These vary based on power, both the positive and the negative aspects Edit: But as Argent just said, Brandon appears to be changing something about Savants, and we do not know exactly what.
  16. Capitalization has kinda became force of habit. And I see them in much the same way, with the Feruchemy power just changing your natural Identity to be more/less. Not sure if that is fully accurate, but... And I see the stick example as a great comparison. Bribing it with Stormlight didn't work, which was my point. She needed the mental fortitude to overcome the personal identity, and she didn't have it. Jasnah did, since she is more experienced, but I still feel that the more time you spend believing that you are someone, the stronger your identity would get. Now that you mention the Final Empire's viewing him as the Lord Ruler.. hadn't actually considered that since I figured personal identity, but that would only make it harder, as that is 1,000 years of thousands of people seeing him as The Lord Ruler. Oh, you meant Lashings. It makes sense looking at it now... He can tap a lot of weight and not go very far at all. Double Pewter basically is crushing things. Increased size, increased strength, increased pain tolerance... its like he becomes the Hulk, but with the benefit of steel compunding speed and Zinc boosted mental capacity. Speaking of F-Zinc, that could answer the timing and accuracy of the pulling trick. The physical speed to align himself, the mental speed to make his decisions, and presto. Add in compounded weight and he could pull most anything. The boulder doesn't exist, therefore it shouldn't have an Atium shadow. (I cannot expressly confirm this, but it feels right.) As for the copies of people, Atium expands the mind to process the information, so he could dodge and take them all on for as long as he had Atium with no trouble even if they were real. As for seeing through an illusion of blackness, that's quite clever and I cannot directly contradict that yet. [Do Atium-users react to the shadows of things coming from behind them? That would negate the blinding illusion entirely if they don't need to see] He's constantly tapping F-Atium, so that adds in a lot on actively moving Investiture to counter 1,000 years of aging. I will admit that he has grown used to not needing to tap much of anything else, but the longer the fight lasts the more likely he will stop playing around and start using more abilities. And against Stormlight users, the longer the fight lasts, the worse the odds get. As strong as the Lord Ruler is, I think that is beyond him for the exact reason that the Inquisitor's can see the metal in blood. Rashek has normal eyes to see, and is content with the metal in an Allomancer's stomach. The Steel Inquisition has to reach the point of seeing trace metal in blood so that they can see anyone. I don't doubt that he is powerful enough to do it, but he doesn't have any reason to learn that he can do that. All in All, I see the Lord Ruler as a hard counter to more or less anyone. He just has too much versatility due to being Fullborn.
  17. I was talking about the one Nalan used on Szeth, but thanks for confirming that those do exist at least
  18. Nightblood's cameo only meant a lot because we had read Warbreaker, so it would only mean a lot if we had watched Warbreaker beforehand. That would happen no matter what order the movies were produced in, since newer people would watch them in whichever order they wanted to, just like the MCU movies. There is a timeline, but without it being stated before-hand, not everyone will be aware of it when they pick their first movie. The Cosmere would have the same problem, only worse b/c most of the movies are in completely different locations, rather than Cap's narrow bit of Earth, Iron Man's narrow bit of Earth, etc.. But I agree that making Stormlight first was a strange decision I always figured it was a Fabrial that performed Regrowth, since we know that Fabrial science replicate the surges. I see your point though, since the audience doesn't know that fact
  19. The whole of creation in Brandon's books has a penchant for assuming things and being wrong, so we will have to wait and see
  20. Fair enough. I do think that a little creative script writing could rectify that while still keeping the story simple and fairly true to the book. I do kinda like this idea, not sure what scene it would directly follow but having one of Kaladin scenes after the fight transition to Szeth dragging himself across the ground would work rather well. Maybe have(in 1st person)him see Nalan walking towards him saying something["I've been looking for you" is a good starting point] (muffled by Szeth's rapidly decaying hearing?) and seeing the eye-closing over the screen as he dies. Szeth awakens to find himself alive, probably right where we last saw him, bloodied and all. That way we can have Nalan resurrect him with a bit more believability, and then he can then give a properly explained rationale. Depending on how the scene sounds at that point, they can cut "resurrected" and go with healing, a la "he's only mostly dead" if need be. About the aging thing, this is a good point. I hadn't considered that. Lift's purpose in WoR is the same reason that Szeth is in the Interludes of WoK, to give a character more personality, more development. The purpose of Lift's Interlude on the other hand, was to introduce not only her, but Nalan(kind-of), show the trouble in Azir(that Dalinar mentions in passing, so not really necessary for the movie) and showcase that you can resurrect people(which is important for later). Also, this has a little to do with characters for later, Brandon said that Taravangian would have an interlude in Oathbringer, assuming it doesn't get moved to an actual chapter. I only say this because it leans towards him having a bigger role in the future, but as you say we will have to wait.
  21. I don't mean tapping Identity. I'm talking about why Shallan couldn't Soulcast the stick. She couldn't overcome its natural identity of "being a stick." The Lord Ruler has had 1,000 extra years of thinking "I am the Lord Ruler" and I'm not sure that even some of the more experienced practitioners have the mental strength to overcome that. If he taps Identity(assuming he actually stored that) then it'll be even harder. Ok, you've lost me here. Why would he be launched away screaming? What have I missed? He has steel compounding. He can quite literally run faster than they can fly unless they put a fair number of Lashings on themselves. That would go through their Stormlight reserve quite quick though, especially since the Honorblades are less efficient. He can simply follow them until they have to land and deal with them there, now without any Stormlight to help them. [same point as below, but only 2 of them can fly since only 2 of them have Gravitation] The Heralds have been killed by something as mundane as Thunderclast Claws so people on here have assumes that while they can heal from great wounds, a killing blow is a killing blow. Additionally, only 2 of the Heralds can heal, as the other Honorblades do not have the Regrowth Surge. Meaning that the other 8 are fair game for killing blows. Oh yea, Fabrial healing... those have a finite amount of Stormlight they can hold, so that's my counter: he can outlast the healing reserves. As for Steelpushing, who says he has to push something at them? He can just as easily pull something sharp/heavy towards them from behind. He doesn't need to touch the items, so there wouldn't be a visual cue for the Herald to notice and try to dodge.
  22. I'm not sure anyone(Save Hoid/the Shards) has the mental strength to overcome 1,000 years of personal Identity in order to Soulcast him. Also, unless they know how Feruchemy works, they wont see the value of his Metalminds, given that many of them were disguised as common jewelry to begin with. Odds are, they'd see them as a cognitive part of him, like clothing is. They would also have to overcome his innate investiture, which is increased a fair bit due to his more or less eternal active tapping of Atium. Which, to the Original poster's question, the investiture from burning metals/tapping Metalminds count as a valid source for Nightblood to consume. A Gold Compounder can heal through decapitation, but I am not sure if Shardblade spine severing is on the same level.
  23. This line of logic makes sense, but we know that Autonomy seems to do nothing but get involved in other planets business from Khriss's notes on Taldain in AU. Harmonium is a god metal, so it doesn't count within the block of 16. It'd just be off to the side with Atium/Lerasium. This "lost" Metal is up for debate, but since it shouldn't be one of the base sixteen, it should be over with Atium and the others.
  24. I realized during the discussions here that most of them would be dropped, but I had my concern about Galladon before this thread even existed, back when we were less realistic about our expectations. Making the Nalthis books a backstory-esque to Vasher was the reason why Brandon wrote them, so having that be the reason to film them seems sound. As for your point about Warbreaker, I quite enjoyed it honestly. I actually considered it easier to adapt to film than some of the others, since it was a simple story. There were twists, but no game-breaking confusion, the "colorful" aspects of the magic could work even better on film than on paper, etc.. This is another discussion though, so I'll stop here. Edit: About Szeth.. Both Taravangian and Nalan make references to Honorblades and Healing. Nalan even mentions bringing people back to life. So it is not completely unintroduced, but it's still taking somebody's word for it. I know it breaks your general plan, but if we have the Lift Interlude, she introduces bringing people back to life, quite literally showing it happen. There is no explanation, but it sets precedent. I feel like it's partly why we as readers didn't have to deal with suspension of disbelief.
