  1. So I am re-reading WoKs and I came across the story that Hoid tells Kaladin (page 850 or so). The story is called "Derethil and the Wandersail". I will paraphrase the story and then quote the portions pertinent to this discussion. The plot of the story is King Derethil wants to find the origin, so he can stop the voidbringers. His kingdom builds a great boat and he sails off. They nearly shipwreck but find an island of the Uvara. The Uvara always seemed to agree and everyone went about their duty. It is later shown at the smallest of infractions (tripping and spilling drinks is cited in the story) the perpetrator is swiftly and brutally killed. When asked why, they reply "Our emperor will not suffer failure". This goes on till King Derethil goes to the tower where this emperor lives. He comes out carrying a very decayed corpse and shows them that the emperor was dead all along. The Uvara promptly go crazy and begin to riot, burn, and kill. Only one asks to flee the island with the king. When the king asks her why they did that, she replies "Do you not see, Traveling One? If the emperor is dead, and has been all these years, then the murders we committed are not his responsibility. They are our own." Kaladin and Hoid then discuss the meaning of the story. It is then that Kaladin says ""It means taking responsibility. The Uvara, they were happy to kill and murder, so long as they could blame the emperor. it wasn't until they realized there was nobody to take the responsibility that they showed grief." Now it could be said in response to this that Szeth was certainly NOT happy while he murdered so it is not the same thing. I disagree, I think it IS the same thing. His "suffering" was his means to blame those who hold his stone, and by proxy the shamans who ordered him to obey any who hold it. It was only when the validity of his oath came into question that he started to freak in earnest because like the Uvara, he realized then he would have to take responsibility for those murders he perpetrated.
  2. There was also a scene I believe where Adolin got hit by a bolt (perhaps the second time? unless it happened once to Dalinar, and then to Adolin, I do recall there being two strikes though), and the armor absorbed the bolt. The stormform parshendi seemed confused, he smiled and then charged it. edit: found it! "Lightning flashed right at Adolin. The sound was incredible and the light. He stood in place, blinded. When it faded, he found himself completely unharmed. He looked down at the armor, which was vibrating softly- a hum that rattled his skin in a strangely comforting way. Nearby, another crack of lightning left a small group of Parshendi, but it didn't blind him. his helm- which as always was partially translucent from the inside - darkened in a jagged streak, perfectly overlaying the lightning." "By the old stories, the suit he wore had been created to fight these very monsters"
  3. I believe that was subjective. Not whether or not the law exists, but whether or not it is rubbish. Kaladin thinks it is given his experiences with lighteyes, Shallan probably thinks it is not given that she is a lighteyes herself. So perhaps in some areas or among some light eyes it is rubbish, while among others they honor that tradition and thereby it is not rubbish
  4. Found it, included page and quotes below: Well of Ascension page 215: "the koloss snapped, grabbing the pack with an inhumanly quick swipe of the arm. It tossed the pack to another koloss." I think there is more, but I will need to look further. edit: also the koloss in question that did so was a large one with its skin just starting to stretch. Sazed stated earlier than an 8 foot tall Koloss's skin fit but didn't seem to sit right, so that would imply in my mind that the one that snatched the pack was perhaps 9 to 10 feet tall and still able to move inhumanly fast, so the speed isn't necessarily linked to the size of the koloss.
  5. I will pull out the book tonight and find the spot. It wasn't during a battle, it was when Sazed was studying them upon discovering Tekiel's army of them.
  6. Why is Roshone joining this melee? And the reason the Koloss become more intelligent in later books is first to maintain their number, they use the spikes the Lord Ruler provides to spike humans into new Koloss. No new spikes since Lord Ruler is dead, so they reuse old ones. As they reuse them, the spikes start losing the hemalurgic charge, making the change less and less effective till they become more and more "human" with each generation. Then in AoL Harmony allows them to breed true, thus making a race. So it is my opinion for this bout, the koloss pre Lord Ruler's death should be used, and they max out at 13 feet according to various wikis
  7. If it helps narrow things down, from what I remember it may come up in the scene where Sazed examines the Koloss army that is being led by Tekiel. A big one suddenly turns on another one, and cleaves the smaller one in two. The description said something like the arm moved in a blur. Also when he is first observing them, I believe he is shocked at how quickly they gain on him, or approach him. I am paraphrasing this, and this is all from memory though.
  8. I will look for the quote, but when Kaladin is first a slave under that guy, he is surprised that the slaver would go anywhere near Alethi civilization. It is a strange nuance but I believe the slave trade itself is illegal, but owning a slave is not to the Alethi. Or it might have been a people they were passing. Sorry got to locate it to be sure edit: ah found the quote and it is too vague for me to make this assumption, i have included it below: "This place would be subject to Alethi law and rules. he'd expected that Tvlakv would want to avoid such things. But here, he'd probably also find the best prices"
  9. Yep, I am currently rereading WoKs, and as Kaladin realizes his stickable powers, he also realizes that's how Syl trips and pranks people. Its what cinches in his head that she is not a WINDspren, and she admits she is something else. So that could possibly allow Kal to affect foes gravitation at range instead of like Szeth who has to always touch, or "spray" "You're not a windspren, are you?" She hesitated, then shook her head. "No" "What are you, then?" "I don't know. I bind things." Bind things. When she played pranks, she made items stick together. Shoes stuck to the ground and made men trip. people reached for their jackets hanging on hooks and couldn't pull them free."
  10. That is assuming we know how the Thrill functions. I have not seen anything on the board that does say this, so if there is please link me so I can learn more . If not, then you are assuming it is an active force being enacted by that unmade instead of maybe just a byproduct of its existence. In other words, that it has to actively focus on each individual that is in combat to cause the thrill. And apparently a shattered honor is more invested if the process of bonding to a spren can start to disrupt it. edit: also consider if the manifestation is what you consider investiture, then wouldn't the rioting and soothing count as investiture from preservation? So it would be preservation vs nergaoul, not just the mistborn/rioter/soother. Now all these thoughts are prefaces on logic based on the limited information I have on the subject. If there is additional information to counter these points, then I bow to greater knowledge lol
  11. Or would it in fact negate the Thrill?
  12. I agree with your conclusion but disagree with your methodology. Just because you wouldn't NORMALLY push or pull very hard, doesn't mean that when you meet resistance, you wouldn't push or pull HARDER. The only problem with this logic is at this point in time, the general populace knows of no one with the strength of Elend, or with hemalurgic spikes. Unless the Set is expecting to go against anyone with either of those attributes (which they very well may, ie Marsh), otherwise it wouldn't make sense to prepare against something that the population at the time deems legend (example just about everyone in the beginning of Way of Kings against Szeth) edit: again I want to stress, I agree with the both of you that the concentration might have something to do with it, and I don't mean to sound critical/saying you are wrong. I am throwing the ideas around skeptically to try to help narrow down why.
  13. Been awhile since I read the mistborn trilogy, but don't koloss move surprisingly fast for their size? Versus the trolls that move slow which makes sense for their size?
  14. Maybe it is determinate based on the amount. Thin layer isn't enough to block the metal inside. Does anyone recall how thick the aluminum bands were in the hats? Like I have pictured in my head a head band kinda thickness, otherwise the aluminum would crumble easily if it was just lining it. Then again I am comparing it to aluminum foil in my head so that analogy could be faulty. Though one other thing, would an aluminum jacket stay intact when fired from a gun? and couldn't a gun covered in aluminum get scratched wearing away the aluminum covering?
  15. It has been commented that epic's powers don't work as science would logically dictate (for example the amount of dust produced vs the object tensored), didn't David also comment once how even when he tensored certain objects, he still got the grey dust? So maybe it doesn't so much convert material A to dust of material A, but instead converts material A, or B, or C, all to dust material Z. edit: take with grain of salt, I still need to look it up to confirm. It has been awhile since I've read it, and I have mis-remembered things before.
  16. I checked Argent and you have me there, though in looking I noticed something else. The shadow also moved towards the stormlight lanterns when she was about to enter the shadesmar. Yes the cognitive deal about shadows and shadesmar make sense but maybe in Jasnah's case, it is just her spren drawn to the stormlight? edit: Please disregard, the distinction is mute given it could just be stated that since shadesmar is the reverse of the world, then the shadow would be draw to the stormlight lantern regardless. Sorry for wasting a post!
  17. I need to look up the quote, but I do remember Jasnah being nervous about people seeing her reverse shadow, and that someone did look at her strangely but the person was drunk or distracted and disregarded it.
  18. Dalinar was told he would be shardless. Now whether this means all bondsmiths are shardless or not I don't think can be said but that does also imply in my mind that the spren don't HAVE to be dead and thereby in shardform
  19. Ah I got you now. Well maybe that is what the Bondsmiths figure out how to do when it is alluded to that they found a way to stop the voidbringers.
  20. But spren fill the cracks of the broken soul right? So what if voidspren work the same way? No soul to fill in, no bond, no voidbringer.
  21. Ok, so I rushed to the bottom of this thread cause I just had an idea. What if the comment about the dead becoming voidbringers refers to HOW the parshendi are killed? Like if they are killed by regular arrows, swords they would just rise again (which would explain why they step over their dead. Maybe it is ingrained in their culture that the dead would rise back up?). This would also explain why shardblades sever the SOUL from the body, instead of cutting flesh. I don't have anything else to support my theory, and is probably a stretch but maybe there is something to it?
  22. After talking to my boss, how about ant inquisitors with feruchemal pewter strength? Of course you would need to use hundreds of pins, but just think about it, a swarm of ants taking out a house........
  23. hell how about this. sharks spiked with the feruchemical ability to hold their breaths on land.......the sharnado......it is coming......
  24. Emphasis mine. Doesn't leave much room to be considered an opinion
