Yeah, give yourself a few years and you'll likely find yourself in the coffee cult, too. Truth be told, I used to need that huge caffeine fix, too. For various reasons, I've managed to cut back my caffeine intake. The biggest reason was the frequency of migraines, which I very rarely get now. I still love coffee, though. I'll have one cup of regular, but if I get more later in the day, I go for decaf. Alas, we don't have a Keurig here, but I do have this coffee mug that works like a French press so I can keep decaf coffee in my office drawer and make one in the afternoon if I want the taste. I tend to do half-caffeine coffee at home when I make it. I think the taste alone works like a placebo! That's just plain annoying. The annoying kid aside, your coach was awfully gullible or just too caught up in something else to think to ask this kid some additional questions and get a better handle on his actual ability. Sometimes coaches can be a little dense... Hopefully nothing will get in your way of practice now, though!

I like this list! The simplified version can just be your first sentence: Are their fantastic elements? If yes, it's fantasy. If no, it's not. So, to use Thursday Next as an example, one fantastic element is This is definitely fantastic in nature. And the series is definitely in the fantasy genre.

Yeah, I think I'm really going to like Capaldi's doctor as well! I was watching the couple specials they had on BBC America (were they on elsewhere?) about the ultimate companion and the ultimate doctor, and it definitely got me really excited. Then the new episode aired and that excitement just multiplied tenfold!

Anne McCaffrey's Pern books are fantasy without magic, especially if you ever read the ones that chronicle the early days of Pern. They're kind of a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid. Also, I ran across this today on the TOR site, which makes me kind of excited. (I'm like a month behind when it was posted on the site, but that's just par for the course for me.) I hope it comes to fruition! Similarly, for being fully in the fantasy genre, Lord of the Rings doesn't show much magic "on screen." You have Gandalf doing a little bit here and there, but not what we've come to think of as flashy magic as other books show it. Similarly, you know Sauron has to use something magical to get all that evil into the One Ring and to bind the others; however, Tolkien was far less concerned with how magic was done than he was with bigger themes. (Go read this book sometime.) Also, I'm in the middle of reading the most recently published and currently last book of the Thursday Next series (hopefully more are forthcoming), and this is a speculative fantasy series. A lot of things that are done or possible in the world are definitely fantastical, but they're the product of technological advances or imagination, not magic. If you've never read this series and like something a little quirky and witty, check it out! Jasper Fforde is the author.

I don't know if there are any mystery fans out there, but I'll take a gander at an Agatha Christie rewrite of SA: Without revealing things of a spoilery nature: Jasnah, obviously, would be the genius detective with the friendly sidekick as Shallan. Adolin and Kaladin would be possible love interests of said sidekick, Adolin being the privileged upper class young man on holiday with his father, Dalinar, the retired British army officer. Kaladin would be a troubled youth with sharp intellect but no social skills, most likely a gardener or other worker at whatever hotel they all happen to be staying at in some British colony of that time. He'd have a troubled past, either scorned by a woman or overlooked as an heir to a fortune. Lopen would be an American on holiday and just so excited about all the exotic things yet still oozing with American pride. Sadeas would be the snide yet highly successful business man. His wife would be just as nauseatingly annoying. And for all those who have read the real WoR, you all can likely guess both the murder victim as well as the murderer! But will Jasnah be able to figure it out before her plucky sidekick makes a poor decision?! (I may add in some characters, but those are my initial thoughts. We're still missing a few parts, such as a "foreigner" in addition to the American and some kind of scientist or person with a field of specialty.)

Ah, I totally missed that. Thank you! I don't know that I'd rewatch it either, at least not anytime soon. The new series makes me want to go back and start rewatching them all from the beginning of the reboot, though.
