  1. "This must be a Thursday.... I never could get the hang of Thursdays." So, the day I decide to take our hand-me-down car to get tested at the emissions station is also the day it won't start. The key fab wouldn't even unlock the car, that's how little juice was left in it. An inspection under the hood showed corrosion on the positive/negative terminals (I looked up the technical term instead of just calling them thingies), which I'm thinking was due in part to our recent trip to the beach with its salty air. Hopefully that's all that's wrong with it, but now it's got to go in the shop before we can get it inspected. That's a Thursday for you!
  2. So, we got my father-in-law to watch the first two episodes, and it was quite hilarious. He sat there with one hand over part of his face throughout the entire 40-some minutes. We bought him a pegasus ornament (they had no actual MLP ornaments at the Christmas shop) to commemorate his watching of the show with us. Now my mother-in-law, she'll totally watch any of it with us. I think this is a first and last for FIL, though. Liking the new profile pic, Quiver!
  3. That's just a given. Plus, he writes more than just YA novels. Wrede only writes YA (as of this moment).
  4. Have you tried anything by Patricia C. Wrede? She's the only other YA author I'll go out of my way to read without a ton of recommendations from people whose taste I trust. I also love Diana Wynne Jones.

  6. HA!! I love that one! I tried getting my husband to watch it once, but he just shook his head. It totally cracks me up every time I watch the series. Statue of Liberty cannon....ha ha ha ha ha
  7. All you need to know about is the general "plot" of Twilight for that one. Even the best of us got sucked in somehow. (For me, it was being friendly with coworkers and agreeing to see the movie with them, which I regret with the exception of the soundtracks.)
  8. I'm about a third of the way through. Reading this weekend got put on the backburner when a friend brought over wedding invitations to address, which was something I offered to do, said friend having atrocious handwriting and me having a calligraphy pen and much better handwriting. Anyhow, I have made some progress. The book is from the perspective of a Scotland Yard detective working with Poirot on a case. I think it's a new character, because I don't recall running across him before. That's all I'll say for now. I'd rather reserve judgment until I'm totally finished.

  10. Now, I like your new suggestion much better. I've been rewatching that series recently and could very much see Richard Armitage as Vasher.

  12. I might have a new one I was unaware of, huh?
  13. You'd be mistrusting me, and I only have ear piercings (albeit eight of them).
  14. I really, really, really hope she does a good job, too! I will let you know my thoughts once I'm done (probably over the weekend because my husband will have a football watching friend over and so I won't have to pay attention to the game at all on Sunday...not really a football person). Poirot is my absolute favorite! I even sent an email around to all my other AC fan friends to let them know about it in case they wanted to borrow the book once I'm finished.
  15. So, I don't know how many other people around here enjoy the mystery genre, specifically Agatha Christie or any other works by the Queens of Crime, but I'm quite a raving Christie fan and have also come to love Ngaio Marsh, Sayers, and enjoy a nice Father Brown story by G.K. Chesterton on occasion. Anyhow, I just got back from vacation, where we happened to visit a local bookstore. We'd been there in the past, the last time being the week that The Rithmatist was released. Side story: I called and had them pre-order me a copy so I could get The Rithmatist while on vacation. Meanwhile, a good friend of mine when to a Brandon Sanderson signing in the Philadelphia area since I was several states away, and she had a couple books of mine signed. She's an awesome friend. End side story. So there's this display with a book sitting front and center that features the words "THE NEW HERCULE POIROT MYSTERY" printed boldly across the top of the slip cover. My brain went, "WHAT?!" and then my mouth repeated the thought. If you're a Christie fan, you know she wrote around 80 novels, many of those featuring Hercule Poirot. He's my favorite Christie detective, maybe because he was also the first one I read so many stories/novels about. So, I looked into this "new" novel. Apparently with the blessings of the family and the agents that handle Christie's estate, Sophie Hannah was given the go-ahead to write and publish a new Poirot novel. Now I just have to finish reading it. I was only able to read one chapter before falling asleep last night, but I'm excited and very hopeful! On a side note, a new six-part Tommy & Tuppence series is in the works for 2015 airing!
  16. Can someone come hang around in our yard? We've got turkeys for the picking (not too long now until Thanksgiving here in the States...)! This picture was taken this morning. I counted an even dozen. (Edit so the picture was actual visible.)

  18. I've not seen that series, so I'll have to rely on your judgment there. We're not huge TV watchers in general, just some select series. I really must go back and watch some of that now. Instead, we've been watching a lot of Mr. Bean lately thanks to the DVD collection.
  19. I can see a couple of those, but others I just have to say "No way!" I like Robert Carlyle as an actor, but he is nothing like I would imagine Vasher. I also think you must have a very different view of Natalie Dormer than I do. Nothing against Ms Dormer, but to me she does not exude goddess-like beauty to the degree Blushweaver is described. Honestly, my intention is not to be critical of her looks. I just don't see it. Everyone has their own taste. Maybe it has to do more with me not being attracted to others of my own gender plus it having been awhile since watching some GoT episodes with her (we're a good season behind, though I've read all the books). Being American myself, I also find it extremely funny that any actor with an accent not of an American flavor (specifically British) does wonders in helping most of us transport to a new world. I have no problem making fun of myself and also my fellow American's in this sense. I wonder if the same could be said if you flipped that around? Would someone with a very different native accent find one or more of the American accents helpful for the same purposes in a fantasy/sci-fi film? Major LOL to your choice for Nightblood. My question, though, is this: "Will Nightblood go around saying "Nightblood" in funny, nearly incomprehensive speech?" "Bean."

  24. I'm back, too. Just slogging away at my full inboxes (email and physical). I'm sure I'll be stopping by frequently to escape!
  25. I will mostly likely not be on here very often in the next week plus a few days. While the 17thshard is a fun place, I plan to be doing a lot of reading with sand between my toes while on vacation. I will probably pop in a few times but not daily as I have been. Hold down the fort, won't you all?
